Honeycomb Smocking (Pleatwork Embroidery) is one of the few smocking stitches we can document to the 16th century in Germany. This video shows the basic Honeycomb Stitch and some variations while discussing historical accuracy and creativity.

I think playing around is perfectly acceptable! With there being so few surviving examples, and so few people could afford to have their portrait painted, we have NO IDEA how much creativity was actually going on.
