A works car, this 917 was entered at Le Mans in 1969 for Vic Elford and Richard Attwood as a 917 LH. The British pairing led for 18 hours and by six laps until clutch issues signalled the beginning of the end for the final surviving 917 in the race. Later that year, it was part of the famous test at Zeltweg that helped fix the aerodynamic issues and as a result 008 became the first 917 K. It continued to be tested extensively and was also raced at the Nürburgring early in 1970. Not raced again, the car then served as a spare for the JWA Gulf team through to 1971. It was then dismantled and not much later sold to Manfred Freisinger. The car was rebuilt and sold on to Swiss collector Claude Haldi. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was restored once more by Freisinger for its new longtime owner Gerard-Dantin Martin. He kept the car hidden in his collection for over 25 years to avoid having to pay capital gains tax. Since 2018, the car is in the hands of a Monégasque private collection. Wearing Gulf colours but the #12 used by Elford and Attwood in 1969, it was reunited with Attwood at the 2018 Le Mans Classic. [/quote]

Before more people ask, here's a short explanation about the engine.
The 917K has a 180° V12, which is often called flat-12
Some people think however that a "flat engine" is the same as a "boxer engine" That is incorrect..
The way the pistons move is different for each configuration. In a "V" engine the pistons for 1 bank move in the same direction.
In a boxer engine the pistons move towards eachother and then away from eachother. Imagine 2 Boxers hitting eachothers fist. Coming towards eachother.
According to someone from the Porsche museum (Some people will know him, Benjamin from the JP Performance video's) it is a 180° V12.
Even the info next to the 917 cars in the museum says this. I've seen it myself many times.
Still the most sudden, extreme and inspiring car I've ever seen/heard/smelt. Not normally a Porsche enthusiast though I respect the engineering of course. But the 917 has always been something very very special. Give my back teeth for one careful lap of course :)
Best race car of the 70s era. Also one of the best sounding cars of the most iconic race cars.
Damn straight
I object. Porsche 935
Imagine standing in the crowed at the end of the Mulsanne in the early 70s listening to 917s and 512s downshifting for 24 hours.
The greatest race car of all time
Yes with the C11 Benz GROUP C
Amazing sound 👍👍👍
I don't know what's your benchmark when you think of beautiful, but 917 is mine
Mine to, mine to! Can you buy one for me?
benchmark???? no... this is best... anything else is ugly compared to this angel on wheels...
Pedro Rodríguez was the master in Porche 917
Di 917 ne ho sentito,ma questa fa lo stesso suono si quelle utilizzate nel film "Le mans" con Steve mc Queen..
Those tires look like vintage 1969 rubber too !! Why not new slicks, not available? That wd b a severe style cramper in that bad boy
now that is a noise
Bonjour 🏁
@ 1:28; Steve McQueen laps the field and takes charge of the race. :-)
Good video but same mistake again! Porche 917 uses air cooled 12 cylinder boxer engine. Boxer is same type of engine as used other Porche cars and VW and Subaru cars. Even Chevrolet Corvair used 6 cylinder boxer engine. Yes, I know, nobody is interest about technical things because Tesla uses wall electric and makes no noise or any exhaust.
Porsche themselves say it is a 180° V12.
I'm not making things up.
Wooow
Three people that don't understand.
That was a tease ... LOL
Is this an original Porsche 917?
Yes, chassis 917-008. Started life as a white 917 LH in 1969.

Not v12.... flat 12
It's a 180°/flat V12 engine, just not a boxer.
@@JMartinni no its a flat 12... see on wikipedia
Not V12!! Flat 12 ! 2 Flat 6 inside! (behind each other) The Sound too very differrent!!! Just check pls.And not 600 HP! :D ...
@@MrChubbyka The info in the description is correct. 180° V12. I've even seen it myself on the info plate next to this car at the Porsche museum. And it's mentioned in this video at the museum. ruclips.net/video/2xgw6Bz39pg/видео.html
Skip to 4:50 to hear the explanation.
180° !! This v12? :D :D Did you read what you wrote?? Think about a little bit pls!! :D :D And The Porsche never make v12! Always just Boxer/Flat!! Only once:1991, Footwork! And only at 6 Round, after the Firm out from F1.This is the only case when he made a V12 engine the Porsche. 6 Race! :D But the U videos I Like, this just a Little Hellp To U! :D
It had a flat 12 not a v12
BREN AU85 Last I checked, a 180 degree V-12. IS a flat 12 by definition.
It was a V12
In the V-engine typical storage of two connecting rods on a common crankpin it is referred to as "180 ° V engine". If, on the other hand, the connecting rods of opposing cylinders are mounted on their own crankshaft cranks, which are offset by 180 ° from one another, this is a boxer engine
Sorry Sir the engine is considered by PORSCHE as a "Flat V 12." Know your Porches.
