Ever notice actresses suffer the pretty girl/ingenue roles in their 20s, then have variety in their 30s, then mom roles and art roles in their 40s, only to have epic supporting roles later? Interesting pattern.
And there are some talented, versatile actors and actresses who stray from character roles that demonstrate their range and abilities and go to action roles. Looking at you,Tom Cruise and Charlize Theron. Seriously, those two should get back to projects like Magnolia and Monster.
Agreed and also she's as a Latina is a minority. Women of color in the film industry are always disrespected when a lot of them are very hard working and extremely talented actresses in Hollywood
dazed darla Well yes, but they were seen as attractive actresses, they generated roles that didn’t just want them selling sex. While Salma never got that type recognition, as she said they wanted her to play maids or remain a actress for the Latin audience. The only way she could get work in Hollywood without portraying the stereotypical “Latina woman” was playing the sex kitten. And this also played a part in her race.
@@talk6696 Agreed... I also disliked that she didn't get the Beautiful Mind role... it's one thing when white actresses play white roles, and you can argue a good chunk of americans are white and it's a numbers game. But the wife of John Nash was Mexican. Did Weinstein make that movie?
the "separate the art from the artist" thing is funny to me. You can separate them and enjoy a movie but you DON'T HAVE TO reward a rapist and publicly celebrate him. there is this thing called ostracism
I totally agree but awarding such movie is giving more money to such person and as such financing his "lifestyle". It seemed that the more he had money, the more is behaviour worsened, until it blew all over his face. So, no! These projects should be boycotted, and he should not be allowed to work in such environment. Maybe a porn shop or porn film industry will wrk better for him.
@@StephanieTumba It's not just about sex, it's about power. The ability to assert dominance over everyone and everything was the appeal in and of itself for Harvey Weinstein. He CANNOT be allowed ANY sort of power EVER AGAIN.
Fun fact: Natalie Portman mentioned when she and Nicole Kidman were promoting COLD MOUNTAIN, Kidman gave her the advice to choose projects based on the director because even if the film flops, you're guaranteed an interesting experience. Video of this is from the 2010 Hollywood Reporter roundtable discussion. That advice is evident in Kidman's choices as an actress as it's highlighted near the end.

Salma Hayek's story about working with Weinstein during Frida infuriated me. Hopefully, we won't have to talk about this monster anymore in the near future and he'll be an ugly memory of the past.
sabrina joon We have to remember him, so it doesn’t happen again. Remember that Weinstein is just one person. But he’s the symptom of the larger systematic problem. And when we treat this as one person who has to go away, we minimize the scale of the problem. Never forget Harvey Weinstein.
I feel bad for Salma too. At least Paltrow walked away with an Oscar after suffering Harvey's abusive behaviour. Salma walked home empty handed and hasn't landed an Oscar worthy part in years
Do you ever wonder that the reason why amazing actors who are also smart and good people (first ones to come to mind are Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams) never win oscars ? Because they refuse to cooperate with the Hollywood engine?
@Madeleine Grayson that's not true. there are studios and directors (spielberg and hanks come to mind) that don't do that. but miramax was a force. harvey's marketing campaigns won oscars. and he didn't just take you off all his movies. he badmouthed you to others. so a lot of the ones that turned him down, did so artfully.
@Madeleine Grayson i think you're lying. what evidence do you have of tom hanks being a pedophile? and how is spielberg a monster? working in the industry means nothing. millions of people can say they worked in that industry. doesn't mean you know anything. tom hanks and spielberg have extremely solid reps, except that tom maybe drinks too much.

"why would harvey ever believe there would be consequences for his actions?" the sheer reality of this statement and the almost painful dissonance between roman polanski himself and that standing ovation hit me like a gut punch. another fascinating video. i have yet to see frida, but it's on my watch list and tbh i have a feeling salma hayek was robbed.
As a Mexican-American, "Frida" has a special place in my heart. Great soundtrack, great actors, great cinematography. It pained me that Salma suffered so much for a movie that was somewhat overlooked. But it's one of my favorite movies ever, I hope that counts for something.
I'd love a video about Michelle Pfeiffer...she's a brilliant actress and she constantly receives good reviews in whatever she's in (even when the movie isn't particularly that great), but it's almost like she's both widely acclaimed and underrated/underestimated at the same time, despite her three Oscar nominations.
Yeah I especially loved her in My Week With Marilyn and Manchester By The Sea . Many people say she isn't that good as Marilyn but i think she trully capture the humanity of Marilyn , she is both vulnerable but is also isn't dumb . Heck i think she would have been the number 1 for me if it weren't for Kelly Garner . I hope with The Fabelmans , she will have some chance for win (Though that push up to lead is completely nonsense . She isn't even the lead in it).

I always found it fascinating that once Nicole and Tom divorced that her career took off. She has continued to give best performances while Tom went to action movies and not serious film roles. I felt Nicole should’ve won the Oscar the year before for MOULIN ROUGE and still take home the award again for THE HOURS. I love THE HOURS and you feel for Virginia and Kidman EARNED this Oscar.
Tom Cruise basically plays the same role in almost every movie he's in - the man who single-handedly saves the world. Born on the 4th of July and his supporting role are outliers.
@@jolymac Magnolia,Born on the Fourth of July,Jerry Maguire,Lions for Lambs,A Few Good Men,Minority Report,War of the Worlds,Risky Business and many more. Cruise is actually pretty versatile, better range than Denzel,DiCaprio,Hanks or other leading men today.
This video doesn't tell you marrying with Tom accelerated her fame. Moulin Rouge and The Others would have happened with or without the divorce. Actually The Others happened because of Cruise since he was a producer on that movie. Another advantage the marriage gave her, according to Nicole herself, was protection. Cruise didn't let any of those dirty rapists of Hollywood harass Nicole.
Can you do a video on Jennifer Lawrence or Emma Stone wins? Their performances were good , but nothing spectacular ,I don't even know how both of them got nominated.
Really simple. Both were starlets in BP nominees (In case of Stone, she won the Volpi Cup at Venice and La La Land was the frontrunner -which validated Stone's performance-). That equation always work in Best Actress. As Gwyneth Paltrow, Audrey Hepburn, Janet Gaynor, Grace Kelly and Julie Christie before them. Never underestimate starlets in this category
I think Jennifer Lawrence's win for Silver Linings Playbook would make for an interesting video. Personally, nothing about the performance struck me as great, much like the rest of the movie so her victory came as a weird surprise. It seemed like rewarding an "It Girl" for doing something beyond what she was most famous for.
@@mcwyman7928 it was great as her 'Oscar scene' but I feel like she acted as herself . She also said in interviews that Mia (her character in the movie) was a lot like her because she s been there, the fear of rejection, the failure, the sacrafices she made. (Sorry for my English, I m Romanian)
Jettt Angel oh please. She didn’t know he was a predator because he didn’t go after her. He went after young naive ingenues without power and he used his assistants to secure the women he wanted to abuse. People knew. But plenty of people would have no idea. Streep worked on projects with him but she didn’t work for the studio. She was already an incredibly well regarded actress before ever working with Miramax. She was busy with her own career and simply saw him as a successful producer she worked with that made great movies. She was right. She didn’t know he was a monster because he hid it fairly well. Just like Cosby. There is no “them.” Hollywood is a massive industry with all kind of people from all walks of life. There is corruption and gross people and monsters - but that is true of EVERY industry. Name me an industry that hasn’t experienced sexual assault or harassment? Women experience it everywhere. It’s not “the Illuminati.” It’s men doing to women and children what they’ve done since time immemorial. Lord - read about Ancient Rome. Sexual abuse is as old as time. And yes - it’s almost always men. There’s no “illluminati”. But there sure as hell are a lot of old rich guys protecting old rich guys even when they are monsters. On both sides of politics. In every industry. In every religion. The issue is always the same. Men seeking power and dominion by any means necessary. But sure / blame Meryl Streep. Instead of the bigger issue. Why are men so predisposed to sexual assault and violence and homicide? And how long do we go on allowing it? Women have had enough. And are fighting back. This benefits everyone. Including you. You’re welcome.

Yes! She's one of my faves! I think her media persona, acting (Gia, Girl Interrupted as personal faves) and fan base with both older and newer (thanks to iconic images via Tumblr, and Millennial/Gen Z fandom) audiences make her an interesting figure, amid the controversies and scope of her celebrity. I really hope she nabs those Cleopatra* and Bride of Frankenstein roles, those along with Maleficient, and The Eternals would bring back the full force of 2000s Baddie Angie, and I miss her! *Cleopatra is said to have been of Greek Ancestry, and wasn't a WOC therefore I'm fine with a white woman playing her, and I think Angie is a better choice over Gaga, esp since Angelina has been wanting to play her for years.
She has only done Best Acress nominees so far not supporting which is the category she won in (and if she plans to do all Best Actress winners this will take a while to get to supporting). However she was nominated in 2008 for Changeling when Kate Winslet won so Angelina will be mentioned then.
Aside from Marvel, Jolie seems to be one of those actors/actresses that intends to make the switch to directing, so while I thought she was great in Changeling (though I would have also loved to see Scarlett Johansson in the role since she was apparently Clint Eastwood’s first choice), I don’t think she’s going to be nominated for acting any time soon.
Thank you for talking about Salma and Frida! Her performance is nothing short of brilliant and now that the truth about Harvey has come out it's clear to see why she never stood a chance. Nothing better demonstrates his total lack of understanding of Frida (the artist or the film) than the fact that he apparently wanted to get rid of the iconic unibrow- which Salma had to push for
I can even say Harvey has 0% of care for the movie he help produce or distribute . All he cares is the oscar , money , and woman's body . He might have already been rotting in prison .
Now like you said, the recent years I had the same feeling with Meryl Streep - a personal dislike for a woman who can actually make more with her status. But between her erratic defense to Harvey, the lack of support for her colleagues (especially among her contemporanies) and the silence for the recent debates (And that's not counting how, as a Latino, feel offended for her brownface in "The Laundromat"
Yes, you are as well but in 1954, Katy Jurado competed by Broken Lance, she was the first Mexican and Latin American actress to be nominated to win an Oscar in tnis category. Nicole Kidman has reinvented herself so many times in her career!! One of the most versatile actors of our generation. It's a shame that the Hours was produced by Miramax, as a 90s kid, it was one of the very first serious contemporary Hollywood movies I saw and it completely blew my mind.
@@TheDinoKitteh Miramax made more than a few movies with other studios- just like Dreamworks. The studio that, while not mentioned in this video, was in competition with Miramax during Oscar season.
It still blows my mind Polanski was awarded best director despite knowing what he did! And the fact that they didn't revoke his membership until last year!
@dob Weinstein is different though because his victims admit that they didn't even tell their own family members. It's very hard to come forward with a story of, he made a pass at me, then sabotaged my career when i said no.... that's why it's a perfect crime. He also bullied men and women in the business... kind of a trump-style, where there was so much aggravation when people put up a fight with him about advertising for his movies or giving him bad press, that they just relented. Mira Sorvino never told her father, for instance, until I think 2 years ago... also, the women didn't tell each other.
@Kat Jasper I think that to see it as an industry problem is a mistake. it's everywhere. of course it's bad in hollywood because you have a lot of money and power at place. But when I sat around with my girfriends and told story about harassment and date rapes and gropings, none of those stories happened in hollywood. they were just normal high school and college parties, offices all around the country, coaches, priests...
I think Nicole elevated the performance in The Hours, because the physical transformation freed her up artistically. She wanted viewers to see her (Virginia) and see past Nicole's physical beauty. She did a wonderful job, well deserved Oscar.
Can we have the video how Kathy bates won her Oscar out of such a huge competition. Even tho I think it was a well deserved. Perhaps we could have this video during Halloween.
True that was the same year Julia Roberts was nominated for pretty woman and she was rising as a huge movie star. The oscars have a tendency to give the It Girl with a potential future the award like they did with Audrey Hepburn, Luis Rainer, grace kelly, Meryl Streep, barbra Streisand, gwenyth Paltrow, Emma stone and Jennifer Lawrence but they surpringly scrapped that practice and gave it to a talented vertan who truly gave a tour de force legendary performance.
I would love to see that video. I think you could see it on her face when she won that she didn't think she had a chance. Her performance in Misery is just incredible. She's never buckled to try and be the 'It Girl' and I have so much respect for her.
@@Kevin-rg3yc Roberts probably lost because Pretty Woman is far from an "Oscar movie", and because Steel Magnolias (her first nomination) didn't gain much traction (seeing as how she was among a plethora of veterans in that movie). She unabashedly stands up for anyone she considers a friend. She frames it with "we don't know all the facts" to make herself sound so reasonable, but I don't buy her nonsense anymore. She just has that "well Mel Gibson never said anything racist to me" attitude. Yeah, and Cosby never drugged you and Woody didn't perv on you so they all must be innocent.
Whoopi backs up Hollywood even when it s wrong and painfully obvious. I was never a big fan of hers but watching in the view was a bit refreshing until she backed up the sickos!! Can’t stand her now.
Had What's Love Got to Do with It (1993) came out the following year, I'm sure Bassett would have won. 1994 was deemed one of the weakest lineups for Best Actress. In fact, the winner- Jessica Lange in Blue Sky- was prevailing for a film that was made three years prior. Because of the bankruptcy of Orion Studios, Blue Sky didn't get distributed until '94.
That video of the standing ovation for Polanski - it made me sick then and sick now. It's not really a question of "forgiveness" when the perpetrator ran off, avoided responsibility and has never ever even attempted to atone for drugging and raping an underage girl. 19:16 - I see you Meryl. Shame. And all you old dudes too - Scorsese etc.
The girl is a 58yr old woman now. Polanski had asked for her forgiveness. She has forgiven him and has told the media to stop their sick coverage for their own gains. She even told that whatever time he spent in jail and in escaping authorities in other countries should be treated as his punishment and let him live his life. Btw I hate Polanski. But this is her stand.
Also Meryl was a close friend of Harvey - when asked about his blatant sexual abuse (which was apparently well known) she said she never knew anything about it.???
I found it hilarious that she won for Silver Linings Playbook. I knew nothing about Weinstein as a young guy back then and I am usually fine with anyone winning, but that really incited me and I never stopped arguing that she should never have been even nominated for most of her movies.
First time I've seen something from your channel. So refreshing to see a report on Hollywood and celebrities that is intelligent and not at all trashy. Thank you for adding integrity to a business that is often lacking scruples.
I personally don't understand how you can separate a person from what they do. Even if it's a creatively good thing. Perhaps a Miramax film did well in spite of Weinstein, not because of him. There are a lot of people involved in making a film. He might be the boss and his opinion carries a great amount of weight. But he's still only one person in the hundreds who create the film.
If y'all haven't seen Boy Erased, it is well worth checking out. Nicole Kidman is WONDERFUL in it, and honestly her character arc is arguably the most interesting thing about it, as a mother and wife of a baptist preacher who chooses her gay son over her church and saves him from conversion therapy. Very powerful and very touching.
It's a fine movie with a certain tonal dissonance, but her performance is impeccable. That her character arc is the most interesting thing about it is just strange. Of the two gay conversion therapy movies of last year, The Miseducation of Cameron Post is the far superior, I'm sad it didn't really get attention at all.
It was mediocre. This is a movie I thought I would be moved by but I wasn't. It was sterile and not that great. Nicole didn't do anything to warrant such a praise.
@@jonykaa739 I saw both movies the same night and while Cameron Post was more entertaining I think - both films weren't anything special, as a matter of fact I found them to be incredibly similar that I wondered if it had the same writer. 10:47 - "They said 'there are no parts for Latinas here ..." It would help if Hollywood didn't whitewash the few good roles there are. Salma Hayek would have been perfect for the role of Alicia Lardé Nash in "A Beautiful Mind" which was made a little before Frida. Ron Howard decided to Anglicize the character (the real Alicia was Salvadoran) and give the role to Jennifer Connelly, who ended up winning the Supporting Actress Oscar. How great it would have been to see Hayek winning for that role, playing another brilliant, strong Latina.
@@cathprudence3829 Understood. Perhaps a more accurate word would have been "Anglo-washed" or "WASP-washed". They made absolutely no attempt to portray her as a Latina--they stuck to the "brainy brunette in an era that worships blondes and housewives" angle. Alicia Nash still has an accent that, like Salma Hayek's is thick enough to cut with a knife. If Jennifer Connelly wasn't going to make any effort whatsoever to portray that aspect of the role, they might as well have given in it to an actress who didn't have to work at it ...

I honestly think that Nicole Kidman’s performance in “Dogville” by Lars von Trier is one of the best performances ever, it’s actually quite scary how good and versatile she isz
Dogville was a collaboration of a lot of great acting... combined w artful filming and a brilliant script/dialogue. Yes. It is a masterpiece. The tone, pacing and narration... and ultimately the MESSAGE are all laudable, glorious pieces to an intricate artistic puzzle. But Kidman, while wonderful in her role, did not carry the film. It was everyone involved (in front/behind the scenes) that made that film utterly brilliant 😎✌💜💙💚💛🧡
Zoe Zzzarko totally agree, but her performance really slapped me in the face. Especially in the end. I really admired her for that, she blended in with the film seamlessly. She didn’t carry it but she was breathing it. But agree to disagree
Seeing Salma talking about being a Mexican actress in Hollywood, I honestly can't help but think about how rudely she shut Jessica Williams down as she tried to talk about her challenges in the industry as a black woman. She’s can talk about her experience, struggle but Jessica as a black woman shouldn’t? She was so dismissive to Jessica. It was appalling
preach.pretty disgusting example of ''olympics of the oppressed". Except only pain is on the pedestal. The violent racism and silencing of non Black people of colour is exemplified here
That actually did happen. But I understand what Hayek was trying to say. Because her experience was different. Hayek was told she would only get jobs exclusively for her looks. She faced discrimination for being Hispanic/Latina, but ultimately her talent was mocked just because she's "easy on the eyes". I know what she meant when she said she didn't want to be hired based on a quota. It's because she feels like her talent is more than enough to get her roles and that Hollywood should acknowledge that. The struggle of African American/Black actresses is a little different, those ladies feel like they don't get roles period (Understandably so!!). There has to be a quota to ensure they're treated fairly, that just because some guy like Weinstein, who clearly prefers light skinned actresses (Even when they're people of color), doesn't get his way where only actresses his racist behind wanted to harass were getting work. SH would understandably get angry every time someone insinuates that she got roles because of a quota, because she had to deal with so much crap regrading who she was in order to be taken seriously. It's definitely going to remind her of all the sexual harassment she got from HV who tell her to her face that "she's just a body". I understand where both women came from, and I don't think Hayek meant to down play Jessica William's struggles, it's definitely coming from her personal experience where she thinks "if someone says I am not talented one more time!!".
@@moetheroe7338 But she wouldn't have won if she had been nominated for Best Actress because she would have been up against Charlize Theron in Monster. Charlize was the absolute winner that year.

Same. Admittedly I am a male, and I'd rather write and direct than act, but I'm in the boat of "the more I learn about Hollywood, the more that childhood dream goes away.
For me there was a specific time when I realised everyone was taking Nicole Kidman seriously as an actress. On the 'Eyes Wide Shut' DVD, it included interviews with Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg, mostly talking about Stanley Kubrick and most of which were edited into documentaries about Kubrick following his death. But with Kidman, the interviewer asked specific questions about scenes and her acting choices in the film. While we do have shows like 'Inside the Actor's Studio' and all, this was on a special features section of a DVD, and kind of came out of nowhere since similar questions were not asked (or at least included on the DVD) of Cruise and Spielberg. I do wonder why these questions asked to Kidman were included in the DVD, but seeing them there is a good thing, and it was the time I realised that everyone was taking Kidman seriously as an actress.
The Hours is one of my favorite films ever, and Nicole Kidman deserved her Oscar. Thank you for contextualizing recent history and capturing the awkwardness of looking back at Harvey Weinstein. From the movie goer/ watcher, it is very easy to see his influence in nominees and wins. You capture each win in it's time and I had no idea how he didn't support Chicago and The Hours as he should have. But, clearly the way he did is cause for major concern anyway. Thank you for elevating voices needing to be heard through your channel.
She deserved Oscar nom in supporting not lead win. Like this video said she didn’t even have as much screentime as Julianne Moore in the film who was nominated in supporting. Category fraud to get maximum amount of noms and wins for a film instead of having the actors being in the same category is extremely typical but not likable or what should be celebrated. And Catherine Zeta-Jones deserved the supporting win.
@@sarasamaletdin4574 Does screentime merit what is lead and what is supporting? We can look at Nicole Kidman's performance and see that as the author of Mrs. Dalloway, struggling as she is writing the book with her life, as two generations of women feel the effect and struggles similar in their own lives. She doesn't need screentime to lead. Anthony Hopkins had the same amount in The Silence of the Lambs. Viola Davis similar in The Help. Problems present in how society views women and women of color in society at large. Screentime double standards for what determines who leads and who supports impacts women, especially women of color, versus men. It's not like Olivia Colman in The Favourite, where an international actor who draws a business interest to forgo a deserving legend in a relevant, potent leading performance for recognizing a white woman in a supporting performance determined by impact, not screentime.
@@sarasamaletdin4574 And Catherine Zeta Jones did deserve her Oscar in a strong supporting performance. I am asking we consider the nuances beyond screentime.
Have you ever considered making a video about the Emmys? Maybe you can talk about Julia Louis-Dreyfus' wins for Veep, or Pheobe Waller-Bridge's recent win for Fleabag.
Emmy's are useless. They keep awarding the same people if they like one season. Case in Point: Game of Thrones was trash for the last 2-3 seasons and they still kept winning. Also Modern Family and TBBT.
Your videos are so well thought-out, comprehensive and intelligent - you really shine a light on aspects of Hollywood I wouldn't have a clue about. Thank-you.
Nicole - fantastically talented. One of my favorite actresses. Yes, being married to Tom Cruise meant she was in his shadow to some degree, but I think she has said it also served as protection from sexual predators when she was new in Hollywood. Noone dared touch Cruise's wife. 04:21 She plays a showgirl courtesan in Moulin Rouge. Not an actress.
She was never fully in his shadow. She was a rising star. Moulin Rouge and The Others would have happened with or without the divorce so she would have eventually become her own person either way. Cruise was a producer on The Others and got Nicole that role. I believe Cruise protecting Nicole cost him an Oscar (worth it!) as many believe he should have won for Magnolia but the winner that year was from a Weinstein movie,The Cider House Rules.
@julie wood I don't believe that. Outside of his 3 marriages there have been numerous reports of affairs with women over the years, while I've never heard any reports of male affairs. Does the guy have issues? Very likely. Is he gay? I don't think so.

I love this video and how in depth you go into everything, especially hi lighting Salma Hayek, but that shot of Harrison Ford’s face when he announced Polanki’s win was hilarious- “Oh gross” personified. Julie Taymor should have been nominated for Frida instead
Very good video! I've been looking for days, researching, reading and looking for insights, interviews etc. to understand the background to the film industry (and especially Nicole's change around) at that time.
Her performance in The Hours is so far above anything else she ever did. She completely disappears into a different human being. Its what the Oscars was made for.
Could you also make some Videos about Supporting Actress, please? All the three other categories have so much coverage and i also always thought that supporting actress was the weakest of the fourth acting categories where i find it hard to find performances that i would call truly great. I would like to hear some insights on that
Each has a weird reputation. I'm not sure if Supporting Actress necessarily gets less coverage than the others. Meanwhile, the Lead categories get high coverage because celebrity status. Personally, Supporting Actor might be my favorite because it feels like the most contentious award of them all.
Considering the Weinstein precedent, now the nom of Salma Hayek has a new meaning beyond being the second Latina. The effort of a POC actress to overcome obstacles even in "house" and against the will of an abusive powerful man like Harvey.
@@lungbutter361 Salma has always been open about her struggles with Weinstein and his behavior towards her. She wasn't believed, because most didn't back her up. Ever notice how her Oscar nom didn't result in a career upswing? That's because Harvey. He did everything he could to ruin her, and unfortunately in a lot of ways it worked. People weren't always silent, sometimes they were hushed, and sometimes no one believed them. Courtney Love was one of the first that I can remember who spoke out against Weinstein, but she was easily dismissed at the time.

I love your videos, awesome turn on Best Actress races overall. Would love to see your thoughts on Kate Winslet career/win, specially considering how unlucky she's been after her really successful 1995-2011 run
Ever notice actresses suffer the pretty girl/ingenue roles in their 20s, then have variety in their 30s, then mom roles and art roles in their 40s, only to have epic supporting roles later? Interesting pattern.
Exactly meanwhile male actors carry into better leading roles the more they age. That's that ageism
@@Kevin-rg3yc Agreed.
The EXACT same thing takes place with Soprano Operatic Roles...
Actually, that’s only the career trajectory for white or white-passing actresses.
And there are some talented, versatile actors and actresses who stray from character roles that demonstrate their range and abilities and go to action roles. Looking at you,Tom Cruise and Charlize Theron. Seriously, those two should get back to projects like Magnolia and Monster.
Salma deserved better, I feel a lot people in Hollywood tended to down play her talent because she was attractive which is sad.
Agreed and also she's as a Latina is a minority. Women of color in the film industry are always disrespected when a lot of them are very hard working and extremely talented actresses in Hollywood
I don't think that's really it because this year in particular is an extremely good-looking group.
dazed darla Well yes, but they were seen as attractive actresses, they generated roles that didn’t just want them selling sex.
@@dazeddarla2275 Ecuadorian, or Bolivian, not Mexican. But yes, they got the whitest possible actress to play her.

Лилия Ренова I was just thinking exactly that.
Yes, as the movie involved many good people. Movie shouldve won nothing while the actors shouldve got the awards

@Diarmid O'Connor well damn no reason to be rudy bitch.
Diarmid O'Connor You are a nice person!! And I wish you a nice day, it seems to me you need it!

@Madeleine Grayson Please Elaborate.

Frida is a magnificent movie.
Selma was fantastic in Frida. She really put her all into the role.
As a Mexican-American, "Frida" has a special place in my heart. Great soundtrack, great actors, great cinematography. It pained me that Salma suffered so much for a movie that was somewhat overlooked. But it's one of my favorite movies ever, I hope that counts for something.

I think Nicole elevated the performance in The Hours, because the physical transformation freed her up artistically. She wanted viewers to see her (Virginia) and see past Nicole's physical beauty. She did a wonderful job, well deserved Oscar.
Always great to see these video notifications come through!!
I think even Bates said that she was stunned when she won, because of the fierce competition that year.
Ooh how spooky. That would be awesome 😊
@@Kevin-rg3yc Roberts probably lost because Pretty Woman is far from an "Oscar movie", and because Steel Magnolias (her first nomination) didn't gain much traction (seeing as how she was among a plethora of veterans in that movie). Not to mention she retained "It Girl" status for years afterwards, culminating in her win for Erin Brockovich.
I remember listening to Whoopi Goldberg stand up for Roman Polanski. I never watched any of her movies after that. Let alone The View.
Angela Bassett in What’s Love Gotta Do With It...such an oversight.
M but Holly Hunter was brilliant in the Piano..
Please, it was ALLLLLLL about Angela. They couldn't have done what she did.
She deserved to win an Oscar for that movie. Angela was amazing!!!
I also agree - disgusting -Hey Meryl what if he raped your daughter?
Also Meryl was a close friend of Harvey - when asked about his blatant sexual abuse (which was apparently well known) she said she never knew anything about it.???
Do why Jennifer Lawrence no longer gets good roles with the downfall of Weinstein.
You answered your own question.
I found it hilarious that she won for Silver Linings Playbook. I knew nothing about Weinstein as a young guy back then and I am usually fine with anyone winning, but that really incited me and I never stopped arguing that she should never have been even nominated for most of her movies.

Yess, The Hours is one of my favorite movies. The acting, particularly Nicole Kidman and Ed Harris, and Phillip Glass' score is amazing.
Ooookaaaaay, here we go again! Thanks for such great content which I don't really mind waiting for because you do it so well.
“Shame on you and shame on me too!”. Ugh that scene and that wig was wonderful
Both of course about gay conversion therapies but I thought they would be totally different but weren't.
I love everything about your channel: the subjects, the research, the edits, the perspective and the voice! I could watch 3 hour long documentaries of the same thing! Thanks!!
Alicia Nash was white. I'm Latina and not all of us have dark skin, please educate yourself.
Cath Prudence Even light skin Latinas can be mixed. My sister is white with green eyes but our dad is dark. Of course there are Latinas with mostly European DNA but it’s offensive to assume they’re fully white when many are not.
Cath Prudence Many Salvadorans are white. I’m full Salvi and can successfully pass as an Anglo girl.

Agree. My fav Nicole movie
Preach. She's moved from being a minority to part of Hollywood elite and married to a billionaire.
Very out of touch.
It's called narcissism. Only her problems matter in her mind. 😏
preach.pretty disgusting example of ''olympics of the oppressed".

Harvey Weinstein intentionally made that robbery possible.
First we need to acknowledge the pathetic bias Emmy has for Game of Thrones and Sherlock. And the fact,a masterpiece like The Young Pope was snubbed.
If we're talking Emmy snubs, I am still fuming about The Wire
@222ckc yesss Amy Poehler deserves the world💯👑
@222ckc I dislike Poehler, but Leslie Knope sure did deserve an award.
Mon Mothma true but her character’s dream in MR was to become an actress. I think that’s what she meant.
@mechaguess Good point, but her being a courtesan is a pretty big part of the plot/conflict. I still think it's a bit misleading not to mention it.
@julie wood I don't believe that. Outside of his 3 marriages there have been numerous reports of affairs with women over the years, while I've never heard any reports of male affairs. Does the guy have issues? Very likely. Is he gay? I don't think so.
