Fixed setups is so important for new people or people who just wanna have a fair race without needing to learn how to setup cars. This is the most important feature that's missing in ACC atm.

The BMW M4 GT3 irl also has a different wing mounting just for the nords, that is 100mm further ahead of the SRO mounting point. The rules allow teams to run a smaller wing, or mount it up to 100mm further ahead. In case this is not an option, teams are forced to run much lower rear wing settings.

I think alot of people or esport people or whatever.. are spoiled by those sometimes strange setups.. and from there the misconception come that acc has a problem with the suspension and so on... a bit like nils said somewhere in the middle of the video... in my experience acc never had a problem with "realistic" setups or higher rideheights... acc always did that quite well and even better in 1.9 now... however the problem is more the "unrealistic setups" and sometimes a driving style that shouldn't be as quick as it is by some (maybe not so much the esport guys but the tier below it) is not punished enough.
that's why so many people run this stranger setups and some maybe even drive with a bit less finess and are still very fast with it... and with this, while it works most of the time.. it might get at times some strange handling (as it should be I think.. indeed I think with some of those setups the handling should be even more strange) .... I had multiple times where I drove a very high but a bit softer setup (for example on oulton to eat the kerbs) .. and it drove very good. Indeed from a driving experience it felt alot more fun.. it might be not as fast as those super low setups.. but felt alot more natural and comfortable to drive...
So stuff were acc is not pushed out of some boundaries with a bit more realistic approach was always quite good in acc.. the thing is that "unrealistic" approaches weren't punished enough...
the development got somehow strange... they try to get it more realistic and they accomplish that... for example 1.9 feels like you can drive with more finess and have a more detailed way how the car response making modulating inputs to the situation more rewarding and so on... but at the sametime.. people are also getting away with driving with a more blunt style of driving better then in the past (for example 1.7)...
that problem also seems to be quite gt3 specific ... because cars like the m2 cup or porsche cup realy need a very finessed way to drive it fast.. balancing it to keep the limit high and balancing it on that limit... were in gt3s I see people just mashing the pedals and are still quite fast with that approach... with what you would be miles of in those other cars...
I think it is a combination of the electronics and the aero... I think the electronics got too good... (maybe they are that good in reallife... but I see sometimes people trail braking with alot of brakepressure without modulating it down to the apex and then just stomp on the throttle exiting the turn.. and are still realy fast with that approach) ... and also the aero seems to be too forgiving in terms of variance.. I think it should be more sensitiv to changes so you actually need to care more about a stable platform... I think that would also help with those "strange" setups... because running super low with also very soft suspension should result in a very strong changing aero plattform.. maybe should also stall the underbody flow at occasions.. I think usually when running very low a stiffer suspension should be benificial even more so if it is a bit bumpy (which then needs damper tuning).. on super smooth tracks you might get away with softer suspension also
but I am not an engineer but that is how I thing about aero dynamics and underbody aero flow...
well wasn't planning on writing such a book... just wanted to say... driving and setting up the car in a realistic approach always worked in acc and got even better in 1.9 .. the problem is that unrealistic setups and sometimes driving style... should be alot more punishing, rather then actually gaining time through it.
that's also a reason why I needed to take a brake from acc.. I realy love the game and physics when it is in a natural enviroment.. but it just feels not rewarding and no point in it, when people are faster with a quite blunt driving approach ( like I said not talking about the aliens/esport guys... those people are just super fast and can drive with alot of finess, they will always be superfast not matter the physic.. it's more about the tier below them) and strange setups no one would run in reallife.
I hope ACC finds its way back
if they force high rideheights on the nordschleife.. it might actually be realy alot of fun..

Great points! I run in a league or two and I try to use my own setups but almost always I realize I save a lot of time (and maybe gain some speed) by subscribing to a setup service. And I must say, just from a vibe place, since around 1.9 I get a little sad when the settings are just min/maxed. Lowest or highest, zero or full… it just removes some of pleasure.
From a curious nerd place though I’d love to know if it was that the physics models loose realistic behaviours at the outer edges of their ranges, or if the game is properly modelling how irl cars would handle these settings…. but are maybe missing something.. like not modelling some durability issues that would negate these otherwise interesting ideas?
The closest non-car example I can imagine would be, let’s say, imagine there’s a track and field sim, and you control a human, train them and feed them and exercise them. In this made up scenario, a user could figure out that feeding the human massive quantities of pure sugar instead of any other food gives the sim athlete a huge energy reserve - and it works in-game helping the user win races. Where as, in real life that much sugar would cause digestion issues and likely induce a diabetic collapse killing the athlete… but because the game doesn’t simulate those things, the sugar strat works?
Strange idea I know… but I think it illustrates my point: are the issues in ACC stemming from a failure/limitation in the math, or from not simulating a tangential issue that would exist in the real practical world? Or something else?
I don’t expect anyone to know the answer aside from Aris or his team, and imagine answering those things might not be in their best interests…but from a personal experience place, I think knowing would bring back some of the interest I seem to be running low on recently.
Ps - Fantastic vid, Nils! That pdf comment made me lol but actually, it was super interesting!

The reason for less TC intervention is the decreased front aero and mechanical grip. If your grip balance shifts towards understeer the rear tires of course don't have to work as much. The lateral grip the rears have to deliver has become lower lower so there is more grip available for longitudinal grip.
Conclusion is there is not more grip available, the car has just shifted balance which frees up grip potential for acceleration

Another great Video and thanks for all the work put into it!
Cars were running lower than 70mm before the Nissan-Crash and could well do so with about 55mm on the front and around 68-75mm on the rear. It's rather a BoP/Safety thing with the 70mm minimum, I don't think Kunos will atually change anything about the setups at all if they release the Nordschleife for ACC. Afterall, the Sim is not THAT realistic that it would recreate a flip hurting spectators and it certainly hasn't bothered Kunos in all those years that people can run ridiculously unrealistic damper/spring settings.
I really hope they will completely re-create the whole suspension simulation and brake feedback for AC2. Would still love to see the Nordschleife on ACC, with SRO running the 24h from 2024 its quite realistic to happen.

Thanks for this very good video (and I really like your replay footage at the end 👍). The thing with the not so cooperative suspension of ACC is one of the major factors, that led me to drive far more iRacing. No sim is the best, it's more a question which one FEELS best for you... but frankly your video makes me curious if it might be worth to dive into ACC back again and tinker with such more "squishy" setups with a suspension, that actually does what it is supposed to do: mitigate bumps and loss of tyre contact. Because usually standard setups with more softer suspension settings feel like garbage in ACC. But I have to say, I tried your Porsche-Setup from a few weeks (or two months or so) and if I remember correctly your suspension settings on that setup were also more on the "let's let the dampers and springs have more range and let it work more"-side... and I liked it. The only thing I don't like is the shitty (sorry for swearing) FFB in some situations, were you almost feel nothing on your wheel, no matter the FFB settings... which is not the case with any other sims driving the same car on the same tracks.
That's why I like your explanations a lot... I'm a techie-guy and know some stuff about physics, but I never really sank my teeth into (race)car specific tech and how to handle physics, so to be frank, I would have a very hard time to build a decent and reasonable car setup if my life would depend on it... but after hearing your explanations I very often go like "aaaahhhh I thought so!" or "now the stuff makes sense to me!". So thank you very much for that!

    • @rickrolled7930

The Nordschleife is certainly the most beautiful and challenging route on this planet. Nevertheless, I would find tracks like Hockenheimring, Oschersleben, Norisring much more sensible/important for ACC. The Nordschleife is more suitable for long-distance races because, among other things, there are hardly any overtaking opportunities. Who wants to do anything like running nearly an entire race in a row? In my opinion, it simply has to be possible to change position again and again in 25 minutes or 45 minutes. I love the NS, but there are simply too many more limited options than on other circuits, that's my opinion

And also I mostly drive the Lambo Evo II which anyway is not losing/gaining much on straight...

disagree with TC reasoning. We drive similar rake at low ride heights. You need insane amounts of rake changes to get noticable differences in actual weight distribution. another comment already explained it better, but its rather due to the front simply being weaker and not requiring as much lateral grip vom the rear, hence there's more available for longitudinal. More travel on the rear will aid that additionally.

Here's a thought. Get good. Play with a normal controller instead of an actual racing set up see how you hang. Guarantee none of yall even passed the OG Career in A.C.

They aren't working on assets for an old game at this point in their development cycle.

This would be game changer massive game changer.
Good for me I know every corner so I'm ready to do low 6 min and show the others how to drive in hell

Well, it would low 8 mins depending on the layout. Pretty sure they will be using the 24h layout (at least I hope)

At the moment it's not ready, unless they go and take one of their proverbial shortcuts in the physics.

why? my test seemed to turn out fine so far. i feel a lot of ACCs issues start to materialze once you go VERY low with the car

@@SimracingPopometerI think the Monza anticut into T1 is the answer. It's taller than any kerbs on the Nords but not by much, if you can't clatter it like in real life to me it's a clear indication that you'll have to avoid kerbs even on the Nordschleife.
Moreover, I don't think the problem is the front ride height. The reason why cars explode when they hit tall kerbs is because upon impact the front suspensions compress and extend so fast that the car literally leaps into the air.

@@danielebrambilla2290 I think the issue with low ride heights is that there's too little time for the suspension to absorb the energy and that it somehow keeps oscillating through the system instead

    • @danielebrambilla2290

@@SimracingPopometer It's probably right as it's ride height that depends on suspensions and not the other way around.
I think the Nords would be drivable but I wouldn't bet on it being actually fun.
I'm not in the loop anymore and I frankly don't care at all about ACC specifically, so maybe I'm biased, but I believe it would be a much better move, marketing wise, to just keep the only recent scan of the Nordschleife for AC2.
