I've used that mouse since 2012 - nearly a decade of faithful service. Recently the scroll wheel got gummed up, so I replaced it with a (black) Classic IntelliMouse. The IntelliMouse is not only heavier, but much more comfortable in the hand. It also cost more than twice as much, so there's that.
The 0 key is probably grey because manufacturing cost. There are no other beige 1x2 key caps on the keyboard so they would have had to injection mould it just for this one key. Right now they can use the same blank cap as backspace and print 0 on it. Cost of moulding and logistics adds up with large volumes. If the form factor is different from backspace, I have no idea why they made it grey.
No, they have not the same form factor. They are very similar, but not the same. I wonder why the 0 key is gray too. It could be a mistake or a deliberate choice of the designers. Or even it could be due to avoid copyright problems, if the original coloring layout is still owned by IBM. but after so many years, all the patents should be expired.
Microsoft has been making those basic optical mice for probably the past 20 years. Looks like it got a bit of a redesign giving it an updated look (and the modern Microsoft logo), but otherwise, it's the same exact mouse they were selling in 2002. Hence why it comes with a PS/2 adapter in the box, haha.
Even though I have and prefer more gaming oriented peripherals, the key switches in that keyboard sound SUPER GOOD. That Microsoft mouse has been sold definitely over 10 years, that was the mouse I used when I built my first computer from new parts which was pre windows 8
It might just be the camera, but this keyboard and mouse look more in the "off-white" or cream camp of retro computer colours, while there was another distinct beige colour (light tan, a light yellow-brown). Seemed to me IBM and Commodore (on the 64C and 128, for example) would use off-white more often, while Compaq would often use beige. Of course, these aren't universal rules. However, I know arguing about colours on RUclips is about as useful as arguing about pronunciation of words, so, don't take this as an argument. Thanks as always for your videos, I watch every one!
Late 80's and early 90's Compaqs used to be a distinctly darker shade of greyish beige/brown that I think is what you're remembering. You can see that style by looking up the Deskpro 386s for instance. They changed their industrial and graphic design in about 1994, at around the same time they changed their logo to the red one shown on the computer in the video (which looks a bit yellowed, by the way). At that time the plastics got a lot lighter as well, matching many other PC brands pretty well. Complicating things further, Compaqs before and after the change in visual design often had darker gray floppy and optical drives that were hard to colour match with third party drives. I'm sure that was mostly a ploy to sell expensive upgrades.
My Presario tower is almost a pink beige. They stopped using the darker gray accents by this time I think. The power button is a sea foam color. Red logo.
@@nickwallette6201 A number of Presario systems (for instance, Presario 5070) from that era do have darker drives (but not the same shade as the early 90's, more of a neutral grey), but it's not consistent. I know there are Deskpro systems from the same era that have the normal beige drives.

I really like lighter colored peripherals, black on Beige/white is much easier to read, especially without needing a backlight, makes me wonder if black colored peripherals contributed to the popularity of backlit keyboards these days.
The beeping sound comes from the PC speaker which is activated in the Toggle Keys section in Accessibility control panel which can be accessed by holding down the shift key for 5 seconds.
I found an old Packard Bell mechanical keyboard with rare brown linear Alps switches and it had a really strong smell to it. Just kind of a sweet chemical smell to it. Not exactly like a new car but that same kind of smell.
Perrix knocks off my favorite mouse, the wired Anker vertical ergonomic. Dang thing is identical as far as I can tell, except it's way cheaper. I wonder if this keyboard is a similar re-badge/no-badge or knockoff.
There is a beige version of the Durgod Taurus K310 mechanical keyboard, which I can highly recommend! Very good quality and a beautiful minimal design.
Ajazz AK510 is a not-too-bad-for-its-price retro style keyboard. Various Leopold keyboards are also exist in beige. I miss that colour on my desktop...
2:01 I suspect that mouse was intended to the Brazilian market since it says Feito na China (Portuguese for Made in China). Also, 10:35, History of Mystery part two by the German band Triumvirat. A German song in a video about a 'German' keyboard, the plot thickens.
"Heerdter Landstraße" isn't actually the neighborhood they try to hint in their advertisement when they talk about "designed in Düsseldorf". (that would be either the fashion boutique KÖ area or Stockum with it's art&fashion academy and fairground or even Niederkassel with the probably highest BMW X-series density anywere). that neighborhood is simply a former heavy industries district which was converted in the 1980ies/90ies for logistic hubs of big japanese brands like Kyrocera, Nikon, Ricoh and since Y2K it has shifted to china im&exports.
I just have got one of it. The overall look is great, but sadly the keyboard is not a good one. The keys need to be pressed almost till the end of the stroke, to be detected. Only the collapse of the rubber dome is not sufficient to close the electric contact between the membranes. If you don't push deeply, many keystrokes are not detected. Therefore the keyboard is not suitable for a serious use, as main keyboard for typing. The keys make also a very plastic sound, like that of cheap keyboards. The good thing is that the keys are laser printed and are made of PB plastic, but due to the issue with the keystroke, it is only a decorative keyboard. The Cherry G83-6105 is the last really good beige keyboard existing, with high profile keys and very good typing feeling. Though it has its flaws, I will continue with it.
For rubber domes, the HP/Key Tronic keyboard of the 1990s is a very tough act to follow. I still have that Compaq Deskpro, although it's been out of service for a while owing to my screwing up its Windows 2000 installation by unwisely deploying unofficial updates. Had that never happened, it'd probably still be the workbench computer. I expect HTML5 media is going to be a bit much for the Pentium 3 these days.
AJAZZ AK510 also does a beige keyboard but with RGB like a lot of gaming style mechs nowadays. It has really noisy blue clone switches and rattles quite a bit. It does include backlit SA profile keycaps though witch is pretty neat. BTC rubber dome with slider keyboards are some of my favorites and can (sometimes) be found for really cheap.
I still use Cherry G84-4100 PS/2 tenkeyless boards with lubed Cherry ML keys to save space on my desk at home, and work. I don't need any more lights than numblock, capslock, and Scrolllock. Cherry ML keys don't get too loud when lubed with thin lithium grease. the only downside to the G84-4100 is no Windows/Super Key.
The one you have has to be BTC Dome with Slider. I owned a Packard Bell 5130 keyboard that have those dome with slider these are the best rubber dome you can get.
The shape of the keyboard is just like the rubber dome boards IBM used in the mid to late 90s, the KB 8923 and the KB 3923. I believe at least the 3923 was made by Chicony as the OEM, and versions were made for other companies like Wyse as well. The fact that this still has the 3923 model makes me think that either Chicony still makes this as the OEM or that someone bought their old molds/tooling and kept the model number, guessing the KU insead of KB indicates the change to USB. Even before reading the model number the bottom looks exactly like my IBM KB 3923, which also has the laser etched keys and seems to be a cost reduced model compared to the 8923 that had silk screened or dyesubed keys and a thicker bottom As an aside the fact that it's an ANSI board but they left the Alt GR key on it greatly annoys me along with the Windows and context menu keys not being gray/pebble colored
Other modern keyboard manufacturer that I can think of making beige keyboard is Realforce, they still making new Topre keyboard in beige colorway (at least with their keycaps color, the case is white), but being a Topre keyboard is the price quite steep for basically a rubber dome keyboard
Since I assume this is a standard USB keyboard (in terms of the transmission protocol used), so it will work fine with a Mac but with one major caviat, the Mac Command (CMD) key will be the Windows key on a Windows keyboard by default (w/ Alt being Alt/option). You can however remap)swap these two keys within macOS system preferences so the Alt key is Command and Alt/option is the Windows key if you wish to stick with your Mac muscle memory rather then have to remember the Command key has moved one place to the left (Windows key). This is something I wish Windows could do easier as I always disable the Caps Lock key whenever possible and in macOS it's a system preference option but on Windows it requires a register hack not for the faint of heart.
The current keyboard i use with my modern computer is a beige hp one. I bought it at a garage sale for a dollar and 2 years later it is still in use. I don't care for modern keyboards with the flat keys.
The molding on this keyboard looks to be completely identical to the IBM RapidResponse KB-3923, which I use as my main. I got it new-old stock from a relative years ago and I unboxed it about a month and a half ago. Disappointingly, although the key caps were two-toned on the box, the actual board only had beige keys. Apparently There's a model of my IBM board that has a back plate; the 8923 I believe. I'm curious as to whether this new board has the plate or not, though I very much doubt it. My old IBM board is a very, very nice board to type on though, easily my personal favorite board.

I was a little disappointed it didn't use the gray accents I was so used to seeing, but I figured it was a move to a more modern palette. It looks more in-line with its contemporaries than the earlier style.
Would've been nice if they had made room for a second hard drive, though. You get one slot. ONE. X-D Use it wisely.
Perixx makes great stuff and they have a huge product lineup.
I really like lighter colored peripherals, black on Beige/white is much easier to read, especially without needing a backlight, makes me wonder if black colored peripherals contributed to the popularity of backlit keyboards these days.
Perixx is small manufacturer, not really known and widespread in Germany. The products are quite ok for the money
This brings back so many memories of the computers I had in the early 2000s. Is it made from the kind of plastic that yellows after 20 years?
I've never heard a keyboard beep before.
The PC does, not the keyboard.
The beeping sound comes from the PC speaker which is activated in the Toggle Keys section in Accessibility control panel which can be accessed by holding down the shift key for 5 seconds.
I use an older, black version of that mouse that I found at a junk shop years ago. It's pretty good
I bought this keyboard a few months ago, it is very nice.
I love the keyboard reviews. Although not just a keyboard, would you ever review a Raspberry Pi 400 with its built-in keyboard?
I reviewed the Wintel K3 keyboard PC which is the same thing except with a Intel CPU system running Windows 10.
@@vwestlife Cool ^^
Watching it now ^^
I found an old Packard Bell mechanical keyboard with rare brown linear Alps switches and it had a really strong smell to it. Just kind of a sweet chemical smell to it. Not exactly like a new car but that same kind of smell.
Another great video, Kevin! Keep it up :)
Very good quality and a beautiful minimal design.
last mouse i had was red. i liked it, it stood out
Perixx are good keyboards. I had one for many years which I changed recently but they have great feel.
I can dig on the beige
BTW: they sould have at least licensed some sound effects from KlingKlang Studios in MintropStraße (where the Kraftwerk albums had been recorded)
I love this channel!
1:53 It'd probably also work with a MIPS machine, an RS/6000, a Nintendo Wii, a smartphone, just about anything really
Jimmy Carter!!! 😀
Thaks for the review, I miss a lot old times keyboard design. I'm sick of black keyboards, mouses, screens and computers.
Yeah I'm with you on the Membrane VS rubber dome, I've felt quite a few garbage mechanical keyboards, and equally as many good rubber dome keyboards.
I'm still using an old multimedia keyboard from the early 2000s on my gaming pc, I have no need for annoying rgb lighting and noisy keys.
*PERFECT*! I am ordering one at once! I have been looking for this for quite some time. Tank you, tank you, tank you! :D ~Cindy! :)
I have these keyboard and i like it brings me back to the 2000's not bad
I've still got my original keyboard from my Packard Bell in 1995. Really clacky and satisfying
The one you have has to be BTC Dome with Slider. I owned a Packard Bell 5130 keyboard that have those dome with slider these are the best rubber dome you can get.
What’s missing is the enter key being the old backwards L shape leftover from its use as the return key on typewriters.
Is LGR is gonna sniff the heck out of that?
The shape of the keyboard is just like the rubber dome boards IBM used in the mid to late 90s, the KB 8923 and the KB 3923. I believe at least the 3923 was made by Chicony as the OEM, and versions were made for other companies like Wyse as well. The fact that this still has the 3923 model makes me think that either Chicony still makes this as the OEM or that someone bought their old molds/tooling and kept the model number, guessing the KU insead of KB indicates the change to USB. Even before reading the model number the bottom looks exactly like my IBM KB 3923, which also has the laser etched keys and seems to be a cost reduced model compared to the 8923 that had silk screened or dyesubed keys and a thicker bottom
As an aside the fact that it's an ANSI board but they left the Alt GR key on it greatly annoys me along with the Windows and context menu keys not being gray/pebble colored
Other modern keyboard manufacturer that I can think of making beige keyboard is Realforce, they still making new Topre keyboard in beige colorway (at least with their keycaps color, the case is white), but being a Topre keyboard is the price quite steep for basically a rubber dome keyboard
I think Evercase still backstocks off-white PC cases from around 2003.
Love the DeskPro EN - I used to have one as a kid, planning on getting another one at some point.
Sounds like a southern city. "Deskpro, Ennessee"
Many would say the model M is the best mechanical keyboard ever made. It's a membrane keyboard so clearly there is more to it then that.
Wow! Even in the 70's people said less when they should have said fewer. I don't remember that.
