While i agree that Dick Button's comments were sometimes... annoying, he was usually right. His comments about Flutzing should have been heeded by younger skaters. Correct edges are so important now. This was 12 years ago...

I’m going to disagree with you here. When Shizuka made her mistakes, she was heavily deducted for her errors . When Sasha comes with a successfully executed program, it deserves a higher score. Look at all the ladies if today as there are fewer Americans to get to desired standards of figure skating. But with Sasha’s short programs that triumph over that of her long programs. Therefore falls are deducted especially during the landing of the jumps. And no figure skaters are immune to deductions especially during a fall or messed up jumping executions.

Sasha always tanked in the long program! From the 2002 Olympics to the 2006 Olympics and Worlds. She couldn't even do it in 2010 when she tried to come back.

Yep, never put two clean programs back to back. Sasha along with Nicole Bobek and Christopher Bowman are the poster children for unrealized potential due to lack of discipline.
Sasha's infamous coach-hopping was because she couldn't take direction from any coach. She always thought she knew better and trusted no one. She left John Nix after the '02 Olympics for Robin Wagner, dumped Wagner for Tatiania Tarasova, and then went back to Nix before the '06 Olympics.
The fluff before Sasha's LP here shows Robin really trying to work with her. Watch the fluff before Sasha's '06 Olympic LP. It also features Robin Wagner speaking VERY differently after working with Sasha for some time and her inability to trust a coach. Her remarks are so candid, I'm surprised NBC aired them. That's why Sasha never reached her full potential when she easily could have been the best ladies skater of her era.

Sasha was at the peak of her career in 2004. At that point of the season she had won everything (internationally) and was the favorite to win the World Championships. Plus, this program was gorgeous, despite the flutz, the aborted sal and the lack of 3+3. Artistically she was second to none.

@@piznoctsauo8141 I do think Sasha had nice artistry, but I don't think her artistry was second to none. Even with her elegant and flexible positions, sometimes I felt like her artistry was "surface level", for lack of a better term. Shizuka's Turandot that year felt more emotional and passionate to me.

    • @tresslercreed

Sasha had stronger spins, better spirals, more intricate choreography... Though Shizuka may have gotten the nod technically, Sasha was better artistically. Plus, Arakawa's triple toes were under-rotated. They would not ratify in today's system.

@@evanperilstein5308 She was actually a nightmare to work with because she never really trusted the people she chose to surround herself with. She could never take direction because she always thought she knew better than everyone else. In an interview she once said, "I make the final decisions on everything because at the end of the day, it's me out there on the ice."
If you can find the fluff piece on her that ran before her 2006 Olympics LP, check it out. By that time, she'd dumped Wagner and gone back to NIcks, her third coaching change in four years. Wagner is so direct and blunt in the fluff interview about Cohen's refusal to take direction that I'm surprised they aired it. During her time with Nicks, he called her "his boss" in a press conference once that got a chuckle out of the reporters, but he was only half kidding. She went back to Nicks because he was old and just let her do what she wanted, but not Tarasova or Wagner.
In an interview with Golden Skate's Ted Flett, choreographer, David Wilson, related a story about working with Cohen. He said after arriving at the rink on the first day of work, Cohen informed him that she wasn't "into" the music and needed time to adjust. So, David sat in one of the rows with Cohen's mother and chatted...for two-and-a-half days while Cohen skated aimlessly around the rink, after which she finally informed him she was ready. That's why Sasha Cohen could never put two clean programs together back-to-back and why she lost the 2006 Olympic gold medal to the 9th ranked skater in the world. The only skater of her time that could defeat Sasha Cohen was Sasha Cohen, and she did.

"And a forward scratch spin, the most difficult in skating".... um, no, Dick Button, no. It's one of the very first spins you learn. Granted not everyone can make it look good, but it's one of the easiest spins. It is the fastest spin in skating, along with the back scratch spin, because you're in a really tight position, but it is most definitely not the hardest spin.

Michelle's camera close up body language was awful. And yeah Sasha didn't do so hot. I.also didn't like how Sasha left Robin so soon - interviewing it wasn't working. I love some Cohen but she crumbled under pressure. Not Wagner's, Tarasova or Nick's fault. Believes Cohen was afraid of strong women. And controlled men. 😎😳😉. Sasha's body language with Robin in kiss & cry was bad. Take accountability Sasha & don't be a Ted Kennedy.
