one of my cats is absolutely fine with me clipping his claws, I do work quickly and keep telling him "good boy" and "almost done" through the entire thing but he doesn't really have a problem with it. I think it's because I've been massaging his feet, running my fingers between the pads and then just "holding hands" with him for years. He's so bonded to me that he pretty much lets me do whatever I want. He's diabetic and I have to check his blood sugar twice a day and give him insulin, I have NEVER had to hold him down or anything, he just trusts me to do what I need to do. I couldn't have been more blessed when he came into my life. I know he's not a bird but still lol.
Calm, easygoing person trains calm easygoing parrot. This guy is committed to what's best for the bird and their mutual encounters. When you see birds like this, it's because of patient trainers.
Thank you for your video and for sharing the relationship you have with your bird...some folks need to learn that it is a relationship you are building...trust takes time...birds have a lot of love to give, give them the time they need to form a strong and trusting bond with you...then you will be rewarded. My conure was about 8 wks old when I adopted him...he was very fearful...now he is approximately 7 months old and he is only now beginning to step up...but we have been building a bond and he loves to be scratched and preened by me. I have faith that my 3 month old Cockatiel will get over her fear as well, we too will share a bond in time. I find that it is much harder to train a bird who was not handled by humans at a young age. My lovebird Kiwi was handraised and there is no comparison...he is extremely affectionate.
Thank you for this video. I wish every parrot owner would try this. Every time I took my parrot to the vet for nails and beak trim, it was a nerve wrecking experience for both of us. They would roll her up in a towel to restrain her, then get out the noisy electric file. We both came home shaken from the drill and the bill.
I am a dog trainer who uses only positive reinforcement. I use the same training methods for my parrots. I have birds that were rehomed to me because they were so aggressive that the owners were terrified of them. I have not been bitten by any of my 4 parrots as far as I can remember. Positive reinforcement works so well.
Smokey is adorable ❤️ I see the love and trust both of you share for each other. I really appreciate you kind of conditioning and training for birds 😊 I'm so happy I found your channel. Much respect to you 👍🏽
I just was googling on how to trim my Senegal parrot nails and came across your video. I enjoyed it ever so much and I will be going out and getting a emery board to work on my birds nails. I do believe and your theory with birds and dogs on conditioning them to enjoy hanging out with humans. I have subscribe and I will be going back and watching all your videos. Thank you so much you’ve done a wonderful service for all of us bird lovers
excellent video - very helpful and very good. And I find this much more interesting then commerical things on TV or on so many other channels. This is very very helpful!!! THanks!
I dont have a parrot either! I wish I could have one but I dont have the time or the place to have one. Biggest reason Im here-. . . Smokey is such a cutie!!
Very good video! Thank you! I've been filing my African Grey's claws for quite a while. It is a slower process than with the quillotine trimmer but it is safer and less potential for bleeding. Thanks for another informative video!
A had a cocatiel for that bird nail clipping it was always nightmare. Home or clinic. But first some introduction. I found that bird. Exhausted on parking lot. Try to find owner, nobody answer. So tris bird stayed with me. Never trust anybody in my family that time. Never allow to touch, but very easily hug to my cheek, scratch my beard gently, whistle on my shoulder, and play with my ear when want something. Nail clipping was always very panic time to that bird. Tried everything that we could find in the books. Maybe not good solution but I used special gloves to catch it gently. Put them on table, then the panic was started. When bird lost some strength he know cannot avoid it. Always grind nails gently with mom. Never hurt him, and always try to make it quick as possible. I want a parrot in future. But this time want to be prepared. Your channel is amazing and show me some of mistakes I have done.
Do you think a bird can be conditioned to lay on their back with feet in the air on a lap to make it easier to file the claws, and still have it enjoyable for the bird? Perch trimming seems a little more difficult for the owner based on how you have to hold up her feet in the video, but if that's what the bird prefers I see no problem! I'm doing my research for owning a macaw in a few years, your videos are awesome!
In the parrot forums, they always warn not to touch birds anywhere but on the back of the neck. They say that touching their body makes the hormonal. It seems youndont have that problem, so maybe the prevailing thinking on handling birds is wrong.
I'm thinking about purchasing a bird and I live in the U.K. What bird would you recommend for my first bird I really like African greys but not sure if I should get it as my first bird
I would recommend a smaller parrot, like a cockatiel. They are relatively easy to take care of, but of course still need proper care and living conditions. But, be aware that they can live up to 30 years or older, which some people don't realize when buying on impulse. Good luck! 😀
Love your videos What I do to trim my African gray “Amy” is: I put her upside down laying and her back and get better handle on her feet. She seems to like it. I trained her plying with her by repeatedly every now and then touching her feet and laying her on her back Then I file my nails when she is on my desk eating her treats so she can see me doing my nails so she gets familiar with the nail file and little by little she accepted it.
Jon, my bird bites me and I have to get someone to hold my Bird with a towel and gloves. It wears me out. How can I change behavior of a biting bird for nail trimming. I’ve been working on this a year already.
He so much like Rio!! She don't like me to file her nails either!! I do need to get her to let me touch her feet more!! I do try to tell her that Momma files her nails too!! That way hopefully she can see this is OK!! I totally agree with you on Training, no need to over power them!! Irene Pepperberg also used a "Loving" approach to training Alex! Do you remember Alex?? Mauricio Catelli has even met Irene & she has met his flock too!! He has a Good video of Irene talking to his bird Jonathan!! God Bless you for what your doing for your birds & ours!!!
I wish you could have shown us the before and after so we can judge how much of the nail needed to be filed (thus showing us a properly filed nail and preferred nail length). Thank you. 🤗🎄🐦
I love your channel! was wondering: my african grey developed the habit of calling my name when he wants to be picked up, yet I hold him a lot and he is out often. How do I break him of this habit?
I have a question.my cockatiel has toys that ive hidden nuts and seeds in and she knows that their there but most of the time she doesnt play with it and she just eats or sits on a perch doing nothing does it have somthing to do with shes a baby or just bored
You seem so knowledgeable, so I'd like to ask a couple of questions if that's okay with you. 1. My bird will not eat any fruits or vegetables. I've tried cutting them differently and presenting them differently. She still won't eat any. 2. My bird is afraid of toy's and won't play with them. I've tried all different types of materials and still she avoids them. My bird is a Yellow Naped Amazon, which is about the same size as Smoky. Thank you very much.
This is really impressive and inspiring. I have cats, and one of them gets mattes on her back, so I should probably condition her to enjoy being brushed more. My only problem is that I have no idea what to reward her with...she's so fearful that not even food works. Being a part feral cat who was captured in a trap after being lured by treats, I understand why she's wary of food rewards. Maybe I should condition her to trust being given treats first lol.
i think first the reward should be stroking them and when they start to show more bonding and love, try feeding her food out of your hand if she comes to you. Then start rewarding her for being brushed
Clicker training might be your friend here! That should help her learn that treats are a positive thing now. And maybe use really high value food like salmon at first to gain more of her trust.
This is great. I'm going to try this gradually. My little pineapple green-cheek conure is so sweet I think this could work. I'm so scared to clip her claws.... I can usually do about two before I lose my courage & fear I'll traumatize her (and me!). And I really hate taking her to the vet for this because I know it must be really invasive and frightening for my girl -- no matter how sweet the vet or tech is. Wish me luck. I do have concerns she will initially see the file as an enemy, but we'll take it slowly & see if we can come to a mutual understanding!
Hey, I'm getting a rose ringed parakeet this July. I wanted to ask if you have any experience with this kind of parrot and if your advice on parrots apply to other species or rather just the African Grey?
Could you do a video on bringing a new bird home. I don't mean what to do at home but what to do at a petstore or breeder's home / store. For example what to look for to make sure it isnt ill. Also, is there any thing different that you should do after you bring a older bird home rather than a baby bird.
My cockatiel hates being handled like that. I've been trying for three months training to just get her to allow me to hold her back for a treat. As soon as I try to lift she gets angry and nips. Does this work on all birds like cockatiels and certain birds ?
Hi and thanks once again for yet another interesting and didactic video. My baby is a year and a half and has been with me for a year. I have taught him to turn around (thanks to you), he gives me foot shakes, he piles his little toy buckets one insde the other and many other things. I feel I have come a long way with him but would love to be able to turn him upside down but am afraid that he will lose his trust in me if I do something that may scare him. Can you give me some guidance as to how I should approach this. He lets me touch him under his wings and grab his foot, but as soon as I apply a little pressure to try to lift him, he bites me. He has bitten me in very little occasions. Thanks a million. Sending you kind regards from Madrid, Spain.
Have you ever tried a Pedipaws filer on her? I did try it on another cat once but she wasn't very compliant. If you ever do use one be aware that since the sander spins so fast it can heat up the nail and possibly cause pain if it's held on one nail for too long.
My parrot ( an indian green parrot ) Doesnt really like me to touch him. he likes neck scratches which is really hard to do it for him. he tries to avoid us and walk/fly the opposite way he likes hiding and climbing. i didnt find any toys for him in pet shops. any advices?
Do you keep Smokey hungry otherwise? How does she take the treat every time you present it? My boy doesn’t take the seeds or anything else as a reward.
Your a life saver!!!!! I have a bird that's half parrot but I forgot the half. And she (or he) has long nails. Last time when the birds nails were long, the owner had the trim to tip and the bird started bleeding and screaming. But can you make a video how to know if ur a parrot is a boy or girl?
No, that's definitely not true. There are two subspecies of African Greys, but the males and females of each subspecies are not differentiated by physical appearances. Congo greys (like Smokey) have bright red tails and black beaks. Timneh grays are smaller, have bone colored beaks and darker maroon/brownish tails. In some parrots, the gender is obvious at a glance based on color, like the Eclectus parrots, (green males, and red/purple females) but that kind of sexual dimorphism is the exception, not the rule. In the case of most birds, only a DNA test will reliably tell you the gender of the bird.
I have an African grey that mults little tiny feathers everywhere and it's constant I was wondering if smokey does and it's a natural thing or is there something wrong with my African grey
Very cool video, but my parrot has a deathly fear of any tools, even simple sticks. He is perfectly fine with me playing with his feet though. Do you know anything I can try?
My 4 month old used to let me file his nails when he was around 12 weeks old, now he can't stay a moment w/o moving around. He desperately needs a cut, let alone a file and I can't even take him to a vet to get it done bc of an another lockdown
Hi wings and paws i was thinking to buy another african grey so my other african grey doesn't be lonely as much although i stay with him like 3-4 but i am scared that my african grey will fight or something
hey man,can you please help me? so i have an african grey parrot not sure if a male or female tho. he's litteraly my bestfriend i spend all of my time with him,i got him a year ago and he really really likes me,he REALLY likes to be handfed and has no problem at all with people,i give him head scratches pet him all over his body with no exceptions but he has one problem, when he steps up he will always bite me. not a little bite strong bites that usually make me bleed.i really can't understand why as he really likes to be on my hand and always starts doing this weird dance when he perches on it,his bites got so bad that i had to wear a jacket every time i want him to step up on my hand, today while he was standing on my hand he got to the bare skin on my fingers and tried to bite me but when i removed his beak with my hand he bit me again with more power i accidentally moved my hand fast and he fell,he isn't mad at me even tho i dropped him,how do you think i can fix the problem? thanks for the help and keep up with the good videos really appreciate it!
ali badreddine im pretty sure wingsNpaws said whenever your parrot bites you,you need to shout "OUCH!" Or "OW!" And if you keep shouting it everytime it bites you, overtime it will learn it is very bad to bite you. Hope this helps.
ali badreddine You should not shout when the bird bites you. That will only teach it that it get attention out of you when it bites. When your bird bites put him in his cage and leave the room. This will teach your bird that when it bites you leave. It loose the you. This is see as a bad thing to your bird.Of and only if it sees you as a positive thing.Never punish your bird.
Hello, I really need help. First of all, I love Smokey she is just gorgeous and you guys are great together. I bought an Indian Ringneck and it has been a week. My bird is 5-6 months old. Whenever I try to talk to her she always ignores me by turning her back to me. She doesn't bite but when I try to move my hand towards her she tries to run away and she screams like somebody is hurting her. I really do not know what to do. I really need tips from guys like you who is perfect with birds. Please help and give me some tips.
Val_123 leave water running.Give a treat to your bird.Get closer and closer to the water still giving treats.Only get as close as the bird is comfortable with over time this will teach your bird water is good.
parrot females will usually not lay eggs unless they mate, some however will lay egg a few when it becomes warmer. You need too start feeding your parrot or other bird a calcium and iron suppliment specially made of egg layers. Unless your parrot is mated the egg will not hatch, if your only parrot who is a female lays and egg, leave the egg with her, leave it until she abadons it otherwise she will lay another, its very harsh on their bodies and it can kill them sometimes, just like a human birth
i usually will use positive reinforcement for my dog, however, pinning her too the floor is very effective if she starts too get over exited or agressive(due to being startled). Note this may work with your dog too, but it will NEVER work with your parrot! It will make it terrified of you! Parrots dont pin eachter too the floor unless they are about to be killed by one. Wolve pack leaders will pin wolves that are lower down as a sign of dominace or that they are pushing the boundries. They also owever never hurt eacher, only pin them too the side, not on the backs as you coud break their legs!
they can break bone! they will only do it if your scare them or push them to do something they dont want to, the trick is too make them think they want to do it
Jamie Pignataro usually with food, for example, if your parrot bites when you put it in the cage, then dont feed them straight away in the morning, take them out of the cage, spend some time with them and then put food in the cage and close the door when the start eating, the parrot went into the cage too eat, it was his idea(although you tricked him) so he won't put up a fight
heyy john. everytime i hold my parrots leg to try and trim its nails, it always climbs up on me. even if i put it down it will still climb. please help
My parrot is scared of everything. She frets when people touch her wings, her tail, her foot and is even scared of my brother. I'm unsure how to even start to train her.
i absolutely love your videos. i just brought my 3 month old grey, Charlie, home two days ago. and using your techniques he is alreasy stepping up on command. Can you offer some insight on how soon is too soon to start teaching tricks such as getting him to lay on his back. is it best to wait till that bond and trust is established? i just dont wanna force anything and lose what trust i have built so far because of a possible negative experience. any tips would be great! keep up the great videos! Smokey is too cute btw!
I simply don't have what it takes to do that kind of thing... Especially with the smaller species, everything is so small! I'm too nervous and stressed out... The TINY fingers and the string-like little claws... I've tried filing: LOL! The string-like little claws are not rigid enough and you must hold the finger very tightly. Too many horror stories heard: broken fingers from being held too tightly, etc. Just not my cup of tea. We are fortunate to have a vet who makes house calls, and I leave all that to her. I'd rather PAY than get all stressed out beyond my nerves!
My african grey would destroy the nail file... and my fingers. She is too aggressive. She always tries to cut my fingers off but she never does that to my dad even tho i am the only one in the house who really love and care about my CAG but she doesnt like me that much. In the evening she is so kind as if she is another bird. I am only allowed to pet her in the evening. She only steps up on my dads hand. I have to carry her with a stick, she would rather die than stepping up my hand. I have much patience. But i think she will be like this forever. Btw she is 2 years old and this behavior came suddenly. Maybe its because of puberty. I would be very thankful for advices.
G-Sauce Parrots often become attached to one specific person in their household and can be quite jealous of them and aggressive to others; it's often the opposite sex too
They can tell if your afraid. Try giving her a sunflower seed. My bird will go on me but not my wife. My Grey is know 13 yrs. old. I bought her when she was 3 months old. I took me over 2 yrs. and a lot of bits before she started trusting me.
beatrice simpliciano all grays look similar. My mom had both male and female. We couldn't always identify what they were at times but they can look alike
one of my cats is absolutely fine with me clipping his claws, I do work quickly and keep telling him "good boy" and "almost done" through the entire thing but he doesn't really have a problem with it. I think it's because I've been massaging his feet, running my fingers between the pads and then just "holding hands" with him for years. I loved the way she let you check her feathers...that really showed the amazing amount of trust she has in you -beautiful!
Keep up the great vids!
You're a superb dad to smokey. Her trust in you is 100% and that's true love from a bird.
*This channel is the best, better than DVDs sellouts and people who don't care about the pets*

I don't even have a parrot- why am i here?
Melody S same
Because in your heart, you want one! took me 20+ years to finally let myself have a bird & when I did, it was love at first sight.
Melody S hahahaha LoL
Because they are gorgeous colors? And training techniques could be used on other pets.

what would happen, if I glued a strip of fine sandpaper on the underside of one perch? wouldn't that do the job automatically?

Just do a little at a time. On clipping, at first just cut the very tip of the nail.
Do you keep your African Grey outside all of the time.
Hey, I'm getting a rose ringed parakeet this July. I wanted to ask if you have any experience with this kind of parrot and if your advice on parrots apply to other species or rather just the African Grey?
Do you think I should get a African grey bird for a pet if I am gone for 2 day a week for 7:00 to 3:00?
If its only twi days a week yes. But make sure you are always on top of its needs while you are with the bird.
Great video! Very informative! Thanks!

I think they’re sunflower seeds
just a quick guestion... does smokey sleep outside in his aviary?
First name Last name his aviary outside is for during the day
Your a life saver!!!!! I have a bird that's half parrot but I forgot the half. And she (or he) has long nails. Last time when the birds nails were long, the owner had the trim to tip and the bird started bleeding and screaming. But can you make a video how to know if ur a parrot is a boy or girl?
A vet can do dna test to see what sex your bird is
you do know you can just look at the color or the tail feathers to see what gender it is
No, that's definitely not true.
Thanks for sharing. Very informative
thank you i just buyed a african grey and want to know the pschologys of him to make him happier like smoky...like your way :*
I have an African grey that mults little tiny feathers everywhere and it's constant I was wondering if smokey does and it's a natural thing or is there something wrong with my African grey
???
they may be powder-down feathers
My Grey will not eat fresh fruits or vegetables at all. Any ideas?
Love the vid!!😀👌
Thank, that was very helpful.
when i try to reward my parrot with a treat it just throws it away
You should check out Parrot wizard for more info.
Do budgie sized cockatiels need nail cuts im planing to get one
My parrot Jaco is one year and nine months old. He has fear of water. Is is normal that? What can I do to help him?
Val_123 leave water running.Give a treat to your bird.Get closer and closer to the water still giving treats.Only get as close as the bird is comfortable with over time this will teach your bird water is good.
Do female birds not lay eggs? how do i deal with this as i do not want baby eggs lool?
parrot females will usually not lay eggs unless they mate, some however will lay egg a few when it becomes warmer.
They also owever never hurt eacher, only pin them too the side, not on the backs as you coud break their legs!
what does he feed smokey
pellets
Do they bite hard?
yes
I had once an extreme bite. though my finger was lost. 😀
they can break bone! they will only do it if your scare them or push them to do something they dont want to, the trick is too make them think they want to do it
How do i make them think they want to?
Jamie Pignataro usually with food, for example, if your parrot bites when you put it in the cage, then dont feed them straight away in the morning, take them out of the cage, spend some time with them and then put food in the cage and close the door when the start eating, the parrot went into the cage too eat, it was his idea(although you tricked him) so he won't put up a fight
heyy john. everytime i hold my parrots leg to try and trim its nails, it always climbs up on me. even if i put it down it will still climb. please help
you should get someone to hold it down like a family member that it trusts
is smokey a boy or a girl
Kimberly Perez girl
Kimberly Perez hmm think about it he is saying good girl about 1000 times in the video so guess what SHE is
Where did you get that file?
Tony SSCHEVELLE any beauty supply store has them..
My parrot is scared of everything. She frets when people touch her wings, her tail, her foot and is even scared of my brother. I'm unsure how to even start to train her.
Chenelle Jangeesingh begin with building trust and socialise with others once your bird is comfortable being handled by you

i absolutely love your videos. i just brought my 3 month old grey, Charlie, home two days ago. and using your techniques he is alreasy stepping up on command.
Mine would destroy me if I tried that lol
Nice
dosent really look like she is enjoying the filer
These tips also work very well with pigs.
G-Sauce Parrots often become attached to one specific person in their household and can be quite jealous of them and aggressive to others; it's often the opposite sex too
G-Sauce, She might be "in heat" if it came on suddenly. If so it should pass in a week or two (I think).
They can tell if your afraid. Try giving her a sunflower seed. My bird will go on me but not my wife. My Grey is know 13 yrs. old. I bought her when she was 3 months old. I took me over 2 yrs. and a lot of bits before she started trusting me.
