Your appriach with your bright bird Smokey is really enjoyable to watch. I can appreciate that you have put in a lot of well thought out training sessions, over time I find the rewards are pleasant and greater than expected. ..you have this beautiful creature who is thriving ubder your care, and you both have an obvious affection for the othe%, and it winds up bring you a lot of joy...I imagine? My question to you is how long do you suggest for playtimes, and training for a very young bird...and hes bright and engaging, as well he lets us know ~ore obviously now when he is wanting to eat for a while, or just play. He's about 2.5 months old , Yellow Sided Green Cheek Conure. He is socializing well, with humans and our 4 year old Himalayan kitty. He and our baby bird are already buddies, but of course we are always in hthe same room if baby b. Is on his play top.He also loves food loves his veggies, especially peas with edible shells, from our garden. He gest a good variety of fresh greens, and hes eating better than we are, I believe. Any suggestions you have for gradually getting a schedule for him would be great.. we have the main things but need to make or buy a good perch, and same with toys.
are you ever upset (not at Smoky, I mean in general)? I mean, you are only human of course but your voice and demeanor are soft, relaxing & pleasant to listen to. It seems like you are very mellow & never upset or angry. I wish I was that mellow. Anyhow, I love your videos and I appreciate the valuable information you provide. Thank you...
Superb playperch. I like its simplicity resulting in efficacy. We also make many of our perches and swings, but with our small birds, we're not in the same league!.
On the bright side, with small birds, they can really utilize the space. With larger birds, I'd have to take her to the living room for her to get enough flying in.
Some birds may seem small, such as cockatiels and the smaller conures, but they have large wingspans. A bird with a small wingspan does much better in a medium-sized room: finches, canaries, budgies, loverbirds and parrotlets are easier to keep in a home as far as flying is concerned. Budgies, especially, are such gymnasts that they take your breath away. They can change direction on a dime and fly at full speed about the room and they like to showoff these skills. Our canary sort of "glides" at high speed but he is not as fast as our male budgie...
Excellent video. Can you make a video on parrot separation anxiety. My CAG just turn a year old and is very attach to me. He gets very noisy if Im not on his site. Once again thank you.
Thank you for the fast response. He have 5 foraging toys inside his cage and 2 on the outside. I already watched all your videos wich are the best out there. You and Smokey are my inspiration and the reason I purchased my CAG name R.T. Everything I know today and practice it come from your videos. Once again thank you.
I don't know much about parrot stands, but this one looks to me very slippery, not very comfortable. Not sure she will be interested in climbing anywhere. What am I missing? Just looks to me that if I were a parrot, I'd prefer the surface on the old one. What's a good a good surface for a parrot?
So I just did what you said about tapping on a perch I wanted my bird to go to. He got super nervous because he thought I wanted to pick him up. He finally came out of his cage, which is not what I wanted, and let me pick him up. So I placed him on the perch I wanted him to go to, praised him and tried to give him a cashew, but he was too nervous and stressed to take it. I really want him to become more comfortable. How can I help him do that? Also does anyone else's grey bite his nails when he gets nervous!
+wingsNpaws :) I was trying to work with him in his cage, poor guy. I always have the cage door open, except when we leave, and he can come in and out as he likes.
How can I teach my African Grey not to escape ? Whenever she's out of the cage she is looking forward to fly points at home in which she has interest for. The same situation with showering, always escaping. How can I train her ? Thank you
Nice new pearch, but it looks inherently unsafe at the base. First, the high pearching area is wider than the base which could induce tipping if the bird's weight plus toys are applied to one side. Also the base is not attached to the stool which would add more weight and stability to the base. If the bird landed on the perch from moderate velocity flight it could easily tip the perch over if not firmly secured and weighted down.
Just a quick question. Are Smokey’s wings clipped? I ask this because I’m thinking of getting a bird. My only concern is that I don’t want my bird to fly away but I also don’t like the idea of limiting my bird from flying at all. If her wings aren’t clipped, I’d love to know how you trained her to not fly off other than on command. If her wings are clipped, perhaps you could still give tips on a way of training a bird to stay on my shoulder/hand. Also I think you do a great way of training both dog and bird, and I love you channel. I’m a sub(of course) but I’m not here to sap you upXD. I’m here for advice and would love if you made a video about it. I’d also love a video about how to get a bird used to dogs. I’m not a dog person but do consider going to petsmart with the bird with me and and not have the bird freak out. Also to not let the dogs freak out. I’m not a dog person at all so I don’t own a dog, nor any pets that could get along with a dog. All I have is a cat, and well.... the cat is clearly out of the question when it comes to petsmart where almost every dog owner brings their dog with them, abut I’m not sure if dogs would see a bird as a pet rather than a squirrel to chase.
mirrors can actually create aggressive or territorial behavior in your birds. They can attack their reflection or try to mate with it, and its bad for their mental health. I let my birds run around in front of a floor-length mirror once a week when I clean their cages!
Hello! I was considering getting a Mustache Parakeet or a African Grey but my parents are divorced and I don't know if the bird would be happy switching environments every 4-7 days.. What's your opinion.
I am in the same situation and have decided to wait to get a bird until I move out because it would be too hard for the bird to go back and forth, and I would want to be able to see it and socialize with it every day. Obviously it all depends on the situation but that's just my opinion
Liam Brent-Hurst very good advice. Birds are incredibly sensitive to changing environment and can very easily get stressed out, which leads to tons of health problems.
Must keep changing it...a non-grit parrot? My african grey still requires feeding twice per day...she eats all her cage food also...she likes country music's not our choice. She never screams and needs her cage cleaned 2 X da.
I want a bird but have 2 problames. 1 my old bird used to fly to me and guests without being commanded to and that was a big problame i didn't kow how to control. second thing is he popped everywhereeeee
so my husband found a parrot and we took him to the vet to see what he was male or female and he is a male so we kept him but evey time I go to his cage he tries to bite me even if im just changing his food or water he tries to bite me or anybody that gets close to the cage. I think that the previous onwers mistreated him. but when my husband takes him out of the cage his fine for a couple of mins then he frecks out and flys everywhere.
I guess my question is how do I go about this cause I love him very much and would hate to give uo on him cause I have two young girl 4 yr old and 5 month old.
Hi Brenda, you'd have to work with him inside the cage first and earn his trust slowly and gradually until you can convince him to step up onto your arm.
Hi wings and paws my african grey's feather is damaged may you tell me how to regain her feather please her name is cacao means chocolate please tell me i want her to fly
What i mean is when it was 2013 he flew away when we where drying him because he just took a shower and he was wet he flew some how but then 2 weeks we put signs that said lost african grey and we found him he was ok he can fly but i don't know what happened and his feather was damaged he could not fly he has damaged feathers tell me what to do i didn't go to the vet but i searched in the internet and it said he needed vitamin d and other stuff but i live in kuwait i can't go with him out side because the temp is 45-50 its a desert country what can i do to help him i want to teach him some flying tricks too but any advice what to do
I don't even have a bird but I still watch all of these videos to see Smokey 😊
Wow, that's a beautiful perch you made. Smokey sure is a lucky bird!
Thanks Emily :)
you and Smokey are amazing! Thank you so much for these videos. I am trying to get closer to my Sun Conure so I watch a lot of Smokey☺💖🐥
Thanks for the comment! :)
Oh my god she is so clever...Well done good job!!!My African is biting but I'm working on that
i love smokey such a clever girl. I wish the owner would let us hear her talk.
I'll work on that!
+wingsNpaws can you do a step by step video of bringing a new parrot home?
He already did

CVersailles do you sell floor perch stands? If so can you give me your web site?
CVersailles I have a Congo African grey so I would need On for his size
Great video. Do you have a video on how to train a bird on command like you do with Smokey. If not can you make one please

Have you tried using foraging toys? Check out my video titled "Enrichment Ideas".

Hi dear ... thanks for your explain I have same and my question is did I have to give him hungry to training him
how do you make a new stand?
Love watching her everyday
Do you clip Smokeys wings??? Do you recommend it?
I'm getting an African Grey. How do you teach to fly or go to a place to go potty?
do you keep smokey hungry before training? my bird seems to refuse the treat.
I really like your Tree Stand.
Thanks!

Hi Alissa, is he not used to being outside of the cage yet? If not, I'd suggest working with him inside the cage first.

Vitamin D3 is absorbed by birds when they sunbathe. If you can't let your bird get access due to weather conditions, try using full spectrum lighting.
+wingsNpaws ok thanks sooo much
