What I'd love to do is home-brew some rules that combine Killteam games with a 9th ed Narrative campaign so after your killteam game you get some small buff in the larger 40k battle, because you disrupted your enemies supplies or injured a commander so they couldn't be taken into the next battle etc. I think it would add some cool flavour to a larger crusade narrative.
I kinda like the new board sizes for ease of access to the hobby. Going from Kill Team games to 40k games with the boards is just a bit nicer with that. And that's always a good thing in my mind!
Well if you spend the whole lockdown building a modular game table with the old sizes .. you’re basically crying right now. Definitely not me though. I’m just talking about .. a friend .. 😭
Great overview. So far the only people I see complaining are those who realize the games been tightened up for tournament play. I don't play in tournaments and do play strictly for fun so this edition does the stuff I was hoping for anyways. It's gonna be fun. Thanks again and looking forward to all your 40k 9th videos.
Thanks for your always cold, deep and interesting analysis of games. I love your conclusion ! I started playing AoS recently. Digged on the internet to look at typical tournament list, puked, then turned off the screen to play with my beloved models not caring much about efficiency and much more about creating original stuff. Can't wait for you next videos. :-)
Well the end of that just made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I’m working on Khorne Berzerkers and Red Butcher Terminators for Crusade. I’m so happy to get to play a narrative game and be able to forge a story for this project!
They did not skimp on production in this book. Stuff like foldout pages are not cheap to make (because they can't always be done fully mechanically and often require some form of human help during the process of printing, cutting, folding and sewing into the book), and do give an awesome experience. I also like the bullet points, because I have poor working memory, so having them set up like that really lets me reference them quickly. I just wish they'd tip in a quick reference guide for the rules, like they have on the last page of the Kill Team book, but as a laminated or otherwise sturdy version that you can take with you to the playing table so you don't have to keep the book next to you unless you really need to check something.
Gonna be honest every edition I look at all my armies and figure out what story/arc they're gonna go through over the course of the edition, so this is so my jam!
They know most places have 6x4 tables already. Could the smaller size be a quality of life thing, e.g. actually having room on the table itself to hold books/notes/dice/dead models/etc?
Good overview. Couple things I'm not happy about. 1. The "free" rules are still going to require the rulebook, since they don't include anything on detachments, missions, the various types of play, etc etc. 2. The points thing. Right now it looks like for 9th I'll need to buy the full rulebook in addition to a $40 Chapter Approved 2020, just to get the points values for my single 40K army(orks). Thats... expensive. I've heard rumors that there will be an app that'll include points values, but I haven't seen anything official on that yet. So it's a very expensive buy-in. 3. Between Blast weapons, coherency rules, and the new Morale phase plus the Combat Attrition rule, this edition seems designed to punish big infantry squads. My 30-strong ork mobs are going to evaporate, because I'm sure there will be a plethora of Blast weapons in the game, and no matter how good the terrain rules are, it's very, very hard to hide 30 minis on 32mm bases to keep them from getting shot altogether. 4. Detachments costing extra command points now. I get that this was probably intended to cut down on "soup" armies, but as a casual player who was working on multiple detachments full of fluff for my army, it hurts. I guess overall it is what it is, and I can't change that, but right now I'm certainly not going to go all in on the new edition on day 1. I can't help but also be a bit salty because I played only a single game with the updated points from CA2019 before this whole pandemic hit, and now I have to buy *another* supplement to get the new new updated points for my army? Ugh. That said, thank you for providing some great coverage of the book.
Crusade sounds fantastic. Will you be running one at some point? COuld you give an example of how you choose an army for both the roster and for a given game? I do find it funny that people were super eager for the open army construction that 8th promised. Take what you want! Turns out a lot of people did not want things that looked like the pictures and instead wanted 32 guardsmen to turn up as cheerleaders.
I'm kinda glad the narrative/campaign section seems pretty solid. Every since I saw 9th trailer my urge to collect Blood Angels has been every present, I love the idea that some random scrub can either end up in a dreadnought, or he 'done goofed' and he'll end up on the front of someone's shield haha
While my primary game is Infinity, I find myself interested in 9th ed. I find it interesting when you talk about ‘how you play’. Honestly, I think I’m going to do a version of that myself: I’ll pick up the new set and just screw around with it. I’m not interested in codices, or in the annuals, or whatever. I’m just going to noodles around with those figs and the models I already have. I simply cannot abide the full on GW carousel anymore.
I saw this in the Chapter Approved and thought of you: "The Grand Tournament 2020 Mission pack is … well, packed with new missions, alongside guidance for running and playing in tournaments, special Secondary Objectives, and loads more. It’s even got a special binding to make it extra friendly to the tabletop setting." Special binding just for Ash reviews?
The map sizes are bases on multiples of "Kill-Team Battleboards" - 22"x 30". Its a push to sell more of those Killteam terrain sets - which would be fine if the battleboards were actually accurately cut. They are not. most of mine are about 22.25"x 29.625". Oh well.
Curious what is not covered in this versus the upcoming chapter approved and missions book and whether this full book is worthwhile unless you have money to burn?
Can you please tell how obscuring is now ? If you can see the tip of the wings can you then shoot the model Even if it is behind 5" wall and it's base are hidden?
Sad to see that Apocalypse wasn't a test bed for radical change to 40k. Personally I've played since 2nd edition, 7th was a chore, however 8th just killed all fun for me personally... 9th seems like a tidied up 8th, so doubt I'll touch this edition. Feels a little sad to admit that, really miss 3rd/4th edition, those where the golden days of 40k.
13:03 I would say as written pick em' up. As you pointed out you have to be careful with how you place your models and casualty removal is now meaningful. Makes the game more punishing for careless tactics.
I just started with the whole 40k universe and thought a conquest subscription might be a good start to get 2 armies for me and my son. And here in Germany we are only at issue 17 or 18. now I really don’t know if i should keep it or not.. are the rules in there now obsolete ?! Bad timing in my opinion
