      I quite don't like the whole competitive aspect of the game and even discussing it, but Auspex Tactics makes it simple, entertaining and useful not only for strictly competitive, but any player if you want to quickly learn about a unit or aspect of the game. It is really nice that we are also getting videos for narrative games.

      @@SkeletalCommissar It is open to fuckery, but that's not the point of narrative gaming. Narrative gaming is about creating a mutual story, a fun and interesting experience for you and your opponent. If an opponent doesn't get that, if they're trying to game the system, then I'd suggest we played matched play instead.

    Personally I love the idea of the crusade narrative system. I've honestly disliked the competitive side of warhammer due to bad experiences with players though I know that isnt everyone.
    As for the imbalance rules I really dont care. I've actually always wished GW would make the game a little more skewed in certain game modes because it's fun to play the underdog and come out on top.

    Those legendary relics remind me of First and Second Edition 40K - the age of “Herohammer.” I remember back in Second Edition the meta where I played was to give your HQ/Warlord a Vortex Grenade and displacer field (3++) or conversion field (4++) and chuck it right into the enemy Death Star. Those things were ludicrously deadly. Blast template, instant death, one use only. I never, ever thought GW would bring them back.
    I think it’s kind of cool that they’re revisiting some overpowered wargear options from the distant past, in a new narrative game format where balance isn’t the primary focus. Love it!

    I've been playing crusade with my friends already. It's a lot of fun. I like upgrading my units in ways that spec into a certain narrative for each unit. My shield captain is a monster in melee because i gave him the admonimortis flat 3 damage relic. With upgrades he has 6 attacks, exploding 6s to hit, flat 4 damage, and damage 8 on 6s to wound (all with d6 rolling). He killed a wraithknight with two unsaved wounds lol. He is the forgeworld captain with the big beefy axe so it seemed thematic and fun. His name is Yortar Ganyth

    My disappointment with how Crusade is being received is that folks are drawing a line under these rules as the ONLY way to play narrative campaigns and not as a starting point to inspire groups to come up with some awesome stuff. I love the idea.

      Some of the fan base for 40k have no imagination. The same thing happened with contrast paints, people got it in their head that you could only use contrast paints rather than using them in combination with normal ones. You can use any rules you want, hell you could play with 2nd edition rules if you can find someone who will agree.

      @@defiante1 No it's that Crusade is just a bad system. Me and my friends have plenty imagination (we play 40k like it's an army RPG) and have already decided that if we do use crusade at all we will pre-allocate ~500pts of units that will receive the Crusade treatment, with everything else being ignored. As a guard player the idea of keeping track of ALL my units in the manner crusade says to is just so unappealing, as after getting up to a large crusade force I'd need 20+ 'character sheets' for all my units.

    Narrative play has supposedly existed since the early days, though I never saw rules for it until recently. The idea has always intrigued me. My brain generates head canon automatically when I'm painting these models and it's been a frustration of mine that that wasn't part of the game the way it is in DnD. I'm just now starting my Crusade army for the Blood Angels and I gotta say, it is a relief to leave the agonizing meta behind and to just have some fun. Now if they can come up with good rules for solo play, I'd be all about that too. I'd love to play some 40k at home when I don't have time to meet up with someone all afternoon! Between that and the Crusade rules, you could have something we haven't had since Joe Dever's Lone Wolf series!

    I bet it will be great, i mean *really great* , with friends where you can accurately keep track of the system and change rules to your liking while crafting a nice campaign, but it won't catch on in the wider 40k scene because of the rules being a bit too swingy between winning and losing battles. Winning battles majorly seems to give you massive boons, but losing massively can completely grind a crusade army into the dust. Narrative play needs a bit of balancing if it wants to reach the point where two strangers can play a crusade game without it seeming a bit broken.

    • @erutherford
      @erutherford 4 года назад +2

      I largely agree. Narrative works great with friends who have SIMILAR playstyles & desires in what they want out of the game. I don't really think Crusade is going to do much when it comes to random games with strangers.

      I would actually try it out a few times. From what I have seen so far, it seems that you cannot really "lose" a crusade (the negatives outweighing the positives) because of the way the exp and resources are dished out. I think it you will always end up with "more" (resources, exp) than you had before you played, even if you got blasted off the table turn 2.

      As things stand for now I agree we need to use points, but I'll be keeping my eye out for when they drop the promised PL update. If they they do a decent job with it, it might be fine to jump over to PL for simplicity and speed of list building from your Order of Battle.
      I don't see an issue with letting players expand their Order of Battle as many times as they want (with 'increase supply limit'). It doesn't allow you to bring any more points/PL to the battle it just gives you more units to pick between. The flexibility when list building is nice but it doesn't compaire in power to stacking multiple Warlord Traits, Relics and unit upgrade stratagems.
      And I don't like the idea of telling a player nope, you can't expand your OoB any more, so you can never include that unit you own in your Crusade.

If you have played narrative games you know you can do everything in this crusade system without the rules presented here. Personally a bit disappointed and would have liked to see more narrative tools like templates on how to create your own items, characters and special rules. Would it be possible to convert from PL to points in order to make a more balanced games? As of right now (and this could change) Crisis Suits and Bodyguards are like 13 power which *ONLY* balances out if those Crisis Suits are completely and utterly kitted to the 9s. Like, literally 3xCIBs per model and Iridium would still only barely hit the 20points/power ratio (3x30+1x10+9x18=262, just over 20:1). With that said, Riptides are 14pl right now even though they're ~300 points for a basic load out (1:21+) and breachers are 2pl even though they can be taken up to ~50points (1:25).

What I don't care for are the narrative systems that overly reward early winners and/or punish early losers.

    I love Narrative games myself, but when I'm playing I am thinking about the story. Why are necrons attacking this planet, what secret did they discover, how are the humans defending themselves, when do the heroic space marines arrive? I also prefer doing smaller narrative games, only one to three games usually.
    What I don't like, is overly complex rules and additions that not only take away from my brain's processing power towards story telling but also make the game far more broken then ever before. There are people in my group I'd never play crusade against because there much better than me and I'd just lose. there are others I wouldn't play against because there far worse than me and I'd just win and become OP. Honestly Narrative was supposed to be the time where you'd have 1000 points of space marines have there heroic last stand against 2000 points of regenerating tyranids, you know they'll die but how do they die was the point, the story, not some... rpg mechanics.
    Its almost like they think rpgs are only about there mechanics and completely ignored the fact that there supposed to be about story. So crusade I'm ignoring, I'm just gonna keep using old 8th edition narrative missions for a long while.

      Agreed. Often it's not the points that make a list cheesy, but the strats etc. Take Obliterators for about 100 points. Expensive for what they do. Then give them endless cacophony for basically free and suddenly they're a steal. I like the strat system, but the buffs cannot be effectively put into points/power level, because it's up to the players how they use which. As such, points aren't as balancing as they used to be.

    • @Sorrowdusk

      @@tripod222 ALSO it's not quite right to increase points of Oblitz because of a single possible stratagem , only allowed for Slaanesh units. @erutherford 4 года назад

      @@grimjack9139 In most of the 8th ED campaigns I've been in we usually start at low point levels and usually try to have different mixes of units [when possible] in different missions in the campaign. We do what we can to come up with a narrative and then field units appropriate to the narrative. What we don't necessarily have is a locked in system of rewards & penalties as IMHO that takes fun AWAY from the game instead of adding fun. We do have unit [or model] carryover though. Like "Bob" the sole survivor later on becoming a Sargent in his Primaris reinforcement unit. We still pay the points for Bob & his unit though so keeping track of things is just for the role-play / narrative aspect as opposed to "win more".

    • @DrThrax4
      @DrThrax4 4 года назад +3

      Essentially it is just adding an extra layer of RPG.
      You no longer have "a squad" of faceless tactical marines.
      You have "Judgement squad", who will gradually improve as you field them.
      And your army becomes a list of such named units. For example, you add a second tactical squad with a slightly different loadout for vehicles, and call them the "Tankbuster" squad.
      Now, every time you choose to play a Crusade mission, you pick which squad your models represent; Judgement squad or the Tank Busters.
      And as you play, they gain a story in your and your friends heads, backed up by these small bonuses and penalties.
      You imaginary army grows stronger or larger with every battle, even if your model collection doesn't change.
      Judgement Squad can become the most hated unit by your friends CSM army for the Battle scar they gave "Lord Terrodon", and vice versa. Maybe the " Warbringers", a Havoc squad killed so many of your buddies imperial guard, you decide to make a point of getting revenge, wiping them off the board and trying to dock their XP.
