    Clear thoughts on what you need to evaluate and how that can affect your decisions in game, clear diagrams and examples, just much better than a huge amount of low effort 'this unit has these stats, this unit has thiese stats' content.

    I do not play 40k, I play Age of Sigmar myself but I love these videos and the advice you give in your video certainly overlaps with both systems.
    I do totally agree with deploying with chaff units first to try and glean some information on your opponents deployment of important units. The only issue I find I have is I sometimes deploy my chaff in a way that my big important are blocked by them and so they cannot get to go where they want. Maybe I should be more proactive, having a pre-game plan in my head where I want my powerful hitters to go before placing down chaff.
    Pre-game moves are really powerful but in AoS, pre-game moves are done after finding out who goes first, the player who finishes deploying first gets to chose (no rolling). I am still figuring out how to maximise this as I cannot simply reactively move knowing afterwards.
    Great video!

    To partake in that thought excercise, I play stygies ad mech so I have some fancy forward deployment as well as a pre game move for my rangers and raiders.
    My personal 2k list includes some very non meta units like a unit of 2 arminger knights and a unit of 2 dragoons (melee ironstriders).
    The main focus of my list is the two ranger blobs of 20 each as well as the single blob of vanguards.
    My goal tends to be to push up as close as possible to my opponent and usually sacrifice either a ranger, vanguard, electro priest or dragoon to tie the opponent down. People tend to be caught off guard with ad mech closing the gap. Then once I tie down the units I want to I proceed to pick off any high risk units the opponent has and more or less wait for them to either chew through my sacrificial unit or fall back. If I've dealt with their dangerous units then I typically fall back with the sacrifice unit and gun down the now exposed enemy unit with the rangers and/or armingers.
    The main issue with this army is that it's very glass cannon-y in that I have to constantly trade above my points value to stay on top. I tend to focus more on denying my opponents objectives rather than focusing on my own (unless I have some very easy ons ofc).
    Now keep in mind that this list has been developed against a local meta of: Tyranids, death watch, death guard and necrons with all armies side from death guard being very infantry focused. If I fought the army in your example then I'd likely try to focus down their vehicles while trying to pressure their infantry into wasting turns against my rush units but it's hard to tell without knowing how they deploy.

    Love the way you set up these Videos an explain the rules. But "obscuring" does not work like your example in 8:15. Blue could see and shoot red in the ruin, if they have LOS. Which they have because there are windows as you mentioned
    Obscuring
    If this terrain feature is at least 5" in height, then models cannot see through or over this terrain feature. This means that one model is not visible to another if you cannot draw a straight line, 1mm in thickness, between them without it passing through or over any part of this terrain feature...
    Models that are on or within terrain feature can see, and can be seen and targeted normally"

    • @danielbrewster8642
      @danielbrewster8642  3 года назад +3

      I thibk I might be misunderstanding you. There was no footprint/base of the ruin, so red wasn't within the terrain feature. And since it's obscuring, models cannot see through the terrain. I think that part is confusing because it's unclear what it considered "inside" the ruin. GW makes ruins with 12x12 bases. Every tournament I've been to uses ruins with MUCH smaller bases, or none at all.

    • @WH40KTurnierplausch
      @WH40KTurnierplausch 3 года назад +5

      @@danielbrewster8642 Thanks for the fast response. Well that the rules point out: "Each time an Area Terrain feature is set up on the battlefield, both players must agree upon the footprint of that terrain feature - that is, the boundary of the terrain feature at ground level. This is essential to define so that players know when a model is wholly on or within that terrain feature, and when it is not. "
      So if you do the video you should agree with the viewer upon the footprint so that we do not get confused :)) Actually a ruin area terrain that is only a wall is kind of a thing I would not have on my battlefield ;)

    • @ElOvnen
      @ElOvnen 3 года назад +3

      @@danielbrewster8642 The explanation on obscuring terrain was very confusing to me as well. IF that piece of terrain was defined as Area Terrain with obscuring and the borders of the terrain was defined as the outsides of the wall, the explanation is totally correct. But defining something as Area Terrain and then making it have no actual accessible *area* seems counter-intuitive. The explanation could definitely have benefited from clarifying the board state better :) Otherwise, I enjoyed the video!

I really do like how you ask so many people their ideas as it's one of the only ways many of us can learn and grow. Many people would avoid continuing making the same mistakes if they just either swallowed their pride or grew the gumption to ask others " what did I do wrong?" or " How could I have done this or that differently?" Very nice video. However, I (and GW) would disagree with your statement @ 8:15 red cannot be shot if a window was present in the wall of the terrain. GW is using 12" x 12" square for area terrain at GW events to mark "being in that terrain" or footprint and every player I know would at minimum count a line connecting the two walls as the footprint of that terrain. Once in terrain, true LoS applies.

    • @danielbrewster8642
      @danielbrewster8642  3 года назад

      Yeah i meant that there would be LOS since red was touching the ruins. You're right that GW uses square area terrain for ruins, but a similar thing would apply if red was on the other side of a ruin and in B2B. Also, the tournaments I have been to, do not have the same area bases

      @@danielbrewster8642 Thanks for the response. I do appreciate it. However, I was referring to when red was not directly touching the ruin. Obscuring only applies if you not within the terrain feature. The red models in the second instance would count as "within" the terrain feature (with GW squares or by a common sense understanding of the footprint of that terrain feature). Once within an Obscuring terrain piece "Models that are on or within this terrain feature can be seen and targeted normally." If there was a window/crack for Blue1 to see red in the first instance (directly touching), then even if not touching the ruin (second instance), red would still be targetable if it can be seen through those windows. If it is a solid wall, red is not targetable is either instance. If nothing else my stubbornness is pumping the comment stats on the video. :)

    I understand the idea of terrain domination by deployment. My son held up a Wave Serpent full of Wraith Guard with a cheap and nasty traitor unit by sitting out of sight in a building which made it impossible for the serpent to cloudstrike. This was because, although the troop bubble was only 9", the space left outside of that was not deep enough for the serpent to deploy without being partially off the table and would thus have been lost had I tried. So positioning can extend that bubble. By the way, on the right flank are the red invictors and the blue incursors actually > 9" apart? They are in from the centre, laterally aligned and at 4 abreast are likely to have breached that distance.

    Example at 9'mins something is all well and good but 2 out of the 3 points described actually don't work. I assume it might be a US vs EU approach to the rules...
    1/ If the ruin has windows and you deploy your red models as they are in the second example, blue would still see you. Because the ruin zone is always determined by connecting the edges of the zone, meaning for us (any tournament I've gone to so far) the ruin zone is actually a triangle and being anywhere in there makes you visible. This is further validated by the WTC ruleset explaining touching the base of a terrain does not count as being in the terrain. In your example if you consider only the walls to be the terrain (and not the zone as a triangle) then you would not be able to get cover at all, touching a wall not granting cover....
    2/ If you don't leave enough space for a charging model to get into the ruin, as per WTC ruleset you could still charge provided you had enough movement to do so, obviously avoiding any intentional cheese to prevent charging. Models would be placed at the correct space after the combat as ended or as soon as it is possible.

I think we have just enough terrain. We don’t use craters cus the hobby store doesn’t have them and same goes for trees and such. We play a ruined city most of the time or rocky canyons. No random containers either. Some smaller portions of ruins in the open areas tho. I’ve found that deployment is the game winning or losing moment. If you do it poorly you will almost always lose unless your opponent just fails all his rolls lol also we play with ruins that have full bases. So once your in it or touching it then that’s it. • @danielbrewster8642

      Yes -- I think the misunderstanding comes from me not explaining what it means to be "inside" the terrain. I will make a whole video on terrain and do a better job of explaining it,
      Some people assume that a piece of terrain has an implied base that is dictated by its shape (ex, that ruin is a triangle that connects to two ends of the L). I did not draw a base on that ruin, because many ruins I play with have a very small base or none at all. GW sponsored events have 12x12 inch bases on their ruins whereas other events like NOVA and LVO actually don't.
      So you are right that if the red models are on the base of the ruin, they could be seen. However, this specific ruin did not have a base, thus you'd have to be in B2B contact to be "in" the ruin. You brought up a good point and reinforced the need to define terrain in games upfront to prevent feels bads.

      I get that. Against Blood Angels I pulled a win in a local tournament by denying my opponent opportunity to charge valueable targets via precise positioning. (correct amount of space between layers of screen is crutial)
      I play for octarius data, engage on all fronts and chose assassinate because blood angles tend to use characters aggressively.
      My play for secondarys is consistently strong with guard - getting and denying primary points as well as the amount of leaked secondary points (due to still overlapping secondary kill oriented objectives) is what makes it hard.
      Scions and scout sentinels as well as cheap infiltration via 'dagger of tusak' allow for relatively cheap and reliable octarius and engage.
      If not dealt with asap, tank commander will trade in my favour. they are however expensive, limited in range and very soft targets.
      Scions (with special gear) complement them well. Can screen, are obsec, deepstrike inbuilt,and can do double duty for octarius if needed.

      Hot take: Its super necessary if we want to allow fortifications to be taken. Also I've played on boards where I almost automatically lost (3-4 pieces of terrain vs a gunline and going second) based on the terrain. It greatly reduces the 'auto lose' terrains
      But its almost a minigame I don't want to play. There is such a huge difference between a good player and a average player already and terrain deployment would further increase the divide and feels bads in tournaments.
      it adds a whole other game that you have to truly study -- probably more than any other phase of the game. pre-measuring distances of terrain based on your unit movements and sizes, denying opponents terrain by placing yours near the edge etc.
      All that to say that Its currently a mini-game that Im not interested in playing and don't want to design lists around it. I'd rather the TOs just set up good and balanced terrain that is different on each table.

      Biggest thing I can suggest is creating a screen of models in the front that are more than 3 inches away from the next row. That way if BA charges in, they can't consolidate into the next combat. a unit of necrons or scarabs are generally going to be cheaper than the Vanguard Vets or Sanguinary guard they're running, so its a good trade for you
      Also, its okay if you are getting beaten up by BA. in the games i've played against necrons, I might be tabling my opponent on turn 4/5 but i'll lose on points. You have so much more obsec, that you should be maxing out primary, and trying to keep the BA player to 30 or lower for primary. A unit of warriors that come out of strategic reserve and try to jump on my backfield objectives turn 3-5 is super punishing to me.
      Scarabs are great, and i recommend running as many as you can!

    Hmm, since ruins are Area Terrain, arent they suppose to have a suggested footbrint or boundary? For my understanding is that as soon as a unit is inside the ruins it can be seen by the ennemy. Or am i missing something crucial here?

      many tournaments did not have based terrain at the start of 9th -- since the early days of the edition, I have not had any of these issues.

    Definitely a subscribe from me, this was great.
    I've just taken a quick screencap of your board layout and run through it with some of my lists and secondaries in mind (against lennon's ultramarines). Really helpful.
    I'd like to try the same on the portrait deployment layout, any chance you can flash that version on screen at some point?

      @@danielbrewster8642 Sorry, it wasn't something you had on screen (I'd have nicked it already) - I was just thinking of if you had a version of the board in the widthwise deployment, as in the other mission types that require more board movement to get within shooting range and you have to cluster more at the poles when deploying.

    Hmmm. My shop has always played ruins like, if you're in it, you can shoot in and out whether it's modeled with windows or not.
    Does actually having windows and being visible dictate whether you can shoot in or out of an occupied ruin?

    • @danielbrewster8642
      @danielbrewster8642  2 года назад +1

      Yes, massively. Models need to have true line if sight to shoot. Whether or not ruins have windows on the first floor drastically changes how they are played, and it super important to check at the start of the game

    do you have a discord? I like your kill team "how to play" video. Now it's my understanding that Custodes get 4 activations so if Custodes did not move he would get to shoot his bolter 4x whatever his weapon says?

    What does deep strike and reserve mean?

    • @danielbrewster8642
      @danielbrewster8642  3 года назад

      Sorry -- I should have explained that better. They are both rules that allow you to start the game without certain models on the battlefield. They're able to drop down anywhere on the board starting turn 2 (and at least 9 inches away from an enemy). Deep strike is free to do and many "special forces" units or "flying" units have it. Strategic reserve is something ANY unit can do, and costs Command Points based on the unit's Power Level.
      Hopefully that makes sense. Please let me know if you have any other questions

  • @dalecolegrove6652

    I play Raven Guard which have access to Master of Ambush, which is essentially a pregame deep strike of an infantry unit, and Infiltrators, which are pregame moves of infantry units. Your Blood Angels may play similarly. Do you struggle with deploying overly aggressively when going second like I do?

    • @danielbrewster8642
      @danielbrewster8642  2 года назад

      Really dependent on terrain, but I do find that I 'lean' towards being aggressive and getting punished if I go second. Death company pre-game move helps reduce it though

    What I like about 40K is that it's very much like real warfare since the battle is mostly decided before the first shots are fired.

    you can still shoot models inside a ruin, not needing to stick their head outside a window

      Only if there is true LOS. Cant see through walls just because someone is in a ruin. GW terrain at their tournament has no windows or walls on the first floors.
      I didn't define the terrain well enough and I'll do a better job of that in my terrain video coming out soon!
