I wanted to point out some Star Trek references in the final scene, when Wade and Samantha were sitting in the chair. There's a Star Trek The Motion Picture poster in the window and a Bat’leth on the window sill.
iRoc's avatar is likely a reference to Gaiking with the giant skull for a chest, and his gun is supposedly from the anime Katekyo Hitman Reborn(changed to just Reborn! in the US).
Avengers (2012) Nick Fury: I don't know about that, but it is powered by the cube. And I'd like to know how Loki used it to turn two of the sharpest men I know into his personal flying monkeys. Funny that you are watching this now. According to the book , Wade was born 12 August 2024. Happy Birthday Wade.. The Movie has hundreds of Easter Eggs, the book has more. The Audiobook is 15 hours or so.
Bucakaroo Banzai is a dumb, cheesy, sci-fi action adventure movie that feels like it was written by a 10 year old and hasn't aged well at all. That's why I love it!
Tbh, Ready Player One is not a bad movie, but it is more or less a studio and director flexing about what can be done in visual effects. Nowadays visually speaking everything goes with movies like this, the Pandora franchise and so on... I absolute understand why it could lose against movies like Close Encounter Of The Third Kind - in that days such movies set new marks in terms of creativity or pictorial language.
@@NiersFloater Spielberg certainly likes VFX, but I don't think that was his primary motive for this movie. He's a fan of pop culture, and what he really wanted to flex was his ability to acquire all the licensing to feature the massive amount of IPs in this film much like he did w/ producing Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The difference is that when you saw Mickey & Bugs in WFRR, those are the actual cartoon characters rather than human characters disguised as them.
The book by Ernest Cline is basically an homage to 80's culture, specifically early computer games and arcade games. The movie changed quite a bit, perhaps because much of the audience wasn't even alive when old folks like me played games like Joust which figures prominently in the book.
I love the book, I listen to the audio version, narrated by Wil Wheaton, about 3-5 times a year. I liked the movie, even though it was a complete let down as a fan of the book. I know people say that all the time about films from books but other than names, the Oasis and competition premise, it’s nothing like the book.
@@yourlifeisagreatstory I didn't like it the first time I watched it, for similar reasons. But it grew on me a bit on a second watch. I decided to look at it as its own story instead of the book story. Not an easy thing to do, because I tend to be a bit of a hard case when it comes to movies changing too much of a good story.
@yourlifeisagreatstory - same! The audiobook is one of my favs I listen to several times each year. Will Wheaton does a great job narrating. The Holy Grail walkthrough always cracks me up. And also agree the movie was a letdown. The stuff with F’Nale/Sorrento was just dumb and unnecessary add. And, they ruined Samantha and her dynamic with Wade for me.
for a lifelong gamer like me, the book was gold - i've read it 3 times and loved it each time being so familiar with most of the references to games and culture. the movie can't compare to the book but is great in it's own right - a different story perfect for non-gamers but with a ton of "hidden" gamer and culture references shoved everywhere throughout the film. i've watched the film 10 or 12 times to enjoy all those hidden eggs. however, if you're a real gamer and know the history and evolution of gaming from its' birth to VR, the movie will never suffice - READ THE BOOK !
The craziest fact about the book to me at least, considering it came out in 2011, is that it told a world where a social media company would buy a VR company (see Facebook/Meta buying Oculus). That one I still can't get over.
I recall hearing once (not sure who to attribute it to) that all science fiction will eventually become science fact… if we can imagine it we can find a way there
Yeah, the book was perfection! I wish HBO had made the novel into a series so it could be flushed out in its entirety. The fact that the first challenge WASN'T the Tomb of Horrors from Dungeons & Dragons bums me out just a little, but I still love the movie, (more so now after having watched Cassie's reaction to it). :)
You seem like you may be quite young. As you go on in life, you may see lots of 'dark future' stories that actually turn out to be far too close to eventual reality for comfort. At least, that's been my experience.
@@jean-paulaudette9246 I hope you're not talking about me. Though I don't look it, I'm 51. And even if I was a kid, age is no brother to wisdom. If you have a problem with someone's post, maybe confront the content of the post itself, rather than the poster's perceived age, eh?

Yup this was one of many bits she didn't react to. So the ironic part is when she gets around to seeing the original bits she will remember them from RP1 and not from the source material.
Peoples enjoyment of this movie seems to be directly proportional to their pop culture knowledge. It's a fun movie on its own but the more you know about pop culture the more you get out of the movie. Getting all the references and easter eggs and whatnot takes the movie to another level.
Sure, there are quite a few comic con types who think the more easter eggs they find, the more bragging rights they have at their next DnD session. I think many people with this 'I know pop culture more so the movie was better for me' mentality missed the biggest easter egg of the film. They are making fun of the culture in this movie, they are pointing out how Halliday is so immersed in this type of culture that his personal life and social skills are completely atrophied. The easter egg you may have missed was the movie telling you to put the controller down, brush your teeth and take a shower and go out into the world and live it. Go dance with a girl and stop competing with other shut-ins to see who spots the most references.
@@Heathcoatman There is that "moral of the story" aspect to the movie. But at the same time, I don't think this is satire. The author of the book really was just writing out his nostalgia fantasy.
As a pre-teen/teen, Adult Swim on Cartoon Network was me and my friends entire weekend, and I personally loved Gundam, I was 28 when this movie came out, when Daito transforms into the Gundam to fight Mecha Godzilla, I turned into a 10 year old kid on Saturday night at 1am hanging out at my friends house watching anime again...of all the nostalgia and references in the movie, that one got me the most.
@@Variable-2-actual Yeah nah. Robotech is subpar to Gundam and Macross. Gundam and Macross are both excellent in their own right. And probably the reason we don't see any Valkyrie fighters in this movie because Harmony Gold and Robotech are a bunch of douches. So while Macross and Gundam continue to produce new content, Robotech continues to be a stagnant IP.
A samurai diving out of _Serenity_ and transforming into the RX-78 Gundam to fight Mechagodzilla was _not_ something I ever expected to see in a movie.

Also, a Klingon Batt'leth. And these are just the ones visible in this video, that I recognize. My main pondering point is how they licensed all this and if anyone refused to have their property included😂🤔. There aren't any Disney/Marvel characters there, I don't think....
@@Banterbear Maybe I'm wrong, but it was my understanding that legally, you don't need permission to show copyrighted/trademarked things in movies, if you're just showing that they exist. For example, you don't need permission to show a character drinking a can of Pepsi. However if the movie revolved around someone leading a crusade to convert people from drinking Coke to drinking Pepsi, that would be different. Again, I could be wrong, but I believe the reason movies usually license things and/or get permission is just to cover their ass in case the company doesn't like how they depict the item and decides to sue them, claiming it disparages the brand. For example if a movie showed someone being murdered by being forced to drink Liquid Plumber, the company would probably have a problem with that. When it comes to using stuff from movies and TV shows, I'm not sure what the rule is. I mean, I don't think you need DC's permission for a kid to wear a Superman T-shirt, or have a Batman figure standing on their bookcase n the background. Even with Disney stuff, it would probably be legal to show a character going to ComicCon, and having Star Wars characters walk by in the background, as long as you weren't focusing on them, or making them part of the story.
@@lurkerrekrul Definitely wrong. They had to license everything for the film. I just looked up a Quora on it. Most were already owned by Warner Brothers, some they got permission for, and others had to be left out because they couldn't get permission. Ie, there was a Blade Runner sequence in the novel, and they had to swap it out for the film. I don't know how it works for things like, say, a character wearing a T-shirt or someone using the terms Padawan, but I think they are generally allowed, one is good advertisment anyway, and the other is something that's fairly common parlance/slang. Of course, a lot of companies will PAY the movie to include their products, as again, it's a form of advertising...good example.is in Bond films with cars and watches...it's all product placement.
RE: Wade loving Buckaroo Banzai. Buckaroo Banzai is the most underappreciated amazing science fiction movie under. I would highly recommend reacting to it! Fun times Cassie!
Halliday's comment about the game "Asteroids" being perfect is basically straight from Spielberg. He made that remark when talking to the E.T. cast on the set in behind-the-scenes footage.
Some 80’s references you may have missed: - The bladed boomerang that cuts off I-R0k’s arm is the Glaive from the movie Krull - The spell to deactivate the Orb of Osuvox is the Charm of Making from the movie Excalibur
So many Easter eggs and references, the bike Artemis rides in the race is Kaneda’s bike from Akira, the box that contains the Orb of Osuvox is Gizmos box from Gremlins, all the posters in H’s workshop, Mad Max and the election poster for Goldie Wilson from Back to the Future. Definitely gotta watch Buckaroo Banzai, so underrated.
Cassie, you're not alone here. Even Addie Counts had to relive the same bad experience in the scene with that challenge involving The Shining (1980). It even happened again during the drive-in scene in Twister (1996).
1-Snowboarding on the planet Hoth. 2-Design my own Batmobile. 3-Create and race a Judge Dredd bike from the comics 4-Visit the video game museum. And 996 other things I can't think of right now.
Spielberg's last two movies, West Side Story (2021) & The Fabelmans (2022), both flopped at the box office, due to a widespread lack of interest in movie musicals & prestige films and because they both opened around the same time as two Marvel movies, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) & Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). In my view, Spielberg deserved better. Here's to hoping that his upcoming UFO movie does well in two years.
This movie and movie references of course are from my generation. I’m so happy to see the journey you are taking. For us, either waiting for season finale or waiting in long lines for your favorite movie will always have a special place in my heart.
Hey Cassie. I'm glad you finally got to watch this! If you want a reference to the Orb of Osyvox spell incantation, you'll need to find the 1980-82 movie, EXCALIBUR. The classic story of making Arthur & his knights. Also stars a very young Patrick Stewart AND Oscar winner Helen Mirren(The Queen) herself! That's where that chant comes from.
12:03 "As if noones figured that out before" Yeah fair it is a surprisingly simple answer, but youve gotta remember, he said "peddle to the metal". That means full speed, no backing out, risk loosing *everything* youve got in a car crash. People probably did examine the back wall, try bumping into surfaces, etc, but it wont open unless youre going all in on a whim
@@philipocallaghan, honestly, I feel like he was misrepresented and underutilized in this movie. Considering how the whole concept of the iron giant is that he doesn’t use his weapons to the fact that he doesn’t “want to be a gun”, the writers of this movie would’ve realized this. Honestly, I think a better situation would’ve seen Sorrento utilizing the Giant instead of MegaGodzilla. It would even make him just as ignorant to not understanding the whole point of certain iconic figures. When he chooses the Iron Giant, he does so because he sees it has weapons that can kill. But it’s up to the characters to see that the Giant doesn’t kill, therefore try and teach him to be good again, like Hogarth did in the movie.
@@osmanyousif7849 no, you're missing the point , he used it as an avatar , just like the DeLorean isn't a race car or the bad guy was superman/Clark Kent you use it as you wish, it doesn't reflect the true origin. I could be snow white and kill EVERYBODY ....it's just an avatar . BE WHAT YOU WANT.
I love this movie. Watched it several times, but the first time in an IMAX theater was the best way to experience this one. I keep hoping they'll re-release it in the theater again, or better yet, a sequel. So many characters to catch walking around in the background as well as other Steven Spielberg hidden references that I think many haven't caught. This movie is a technical marvel. It's such a shame in one sense that something as visually amazing as this is taken for granted rather than blowing peoples minds.
Artimus was riding Kaneda's bike from Akira, which i'm not sure you've seen, but if you haven't then you really need to, it's one of the greatest films ever made
@@randallwright1973 I saw Akira for the first time in a theatrical rerelease in 2020. I definitely didn't think it was the greatest movie ever made. The animation was great, but the story was quite bizarre and not all that interesting.
Yes. The tests to find his keys are Always the same. You have to pass each test to get clues to the next key. he also designed to be first come first serve; meaning that once the first key is found, it's still there and CAN be found again. In fact there can be hundreds - possibly even tens of thousands - of people with "the first" key. But back to your point, the tests themselves are universal to everyone. They simply have to pass the tests.
As a person who absolutely loved the book, I feel this was a worthy film adaptation. It's tough to put the book into a feature film and I feel they did a decent job without getting into a multi-part movie franchise. However, I feel they could have made this into a mini-series instead in order to be more true to the film.
I read the book after I saw the movie. I enjoyed the movie a lot even though dystopian stuff is not my fave. Thought the book was much darker and I'm not sure I would have enjoyed the movie as much if I'd done the book first.
I'm the opposite on the movie, think it's a solid film, but I also loved the book too. I think it just went under 'production hell' and that's why the movie suffered, if I remember correctly.
I read the book first, loved it, and was super excited that Spielberg was directing the movie. Sadly, the movie is good but not great. It’s Spielberg, so it’s well executed. But as Cassie noted, the VR world looks way too cartoony to me. I also don’t like the casting of Rylance for Halliday. Or maybe just his performance/take on it. 🤷🏻♂️
Hi Cassie, so glad you finally got to see this one, so many classic avatar characters in this, Chucky, Iron Giant, etc. The Oasis is something we should do in the future and of course it should be controlled by a righteous person or group of people. The voice of the assassin so to speak was Deadpool's bar buddy and was in Cloverfield as Hud. Just another great video game movie, reminds me of an updated Tron where you're the user controlling your character. Nice reaction. I suggest Condorman, Shipwrecked, The Time Machine (1960), Masters Of The Universe, Legend (1985), The Dark Crystal, Gamer, Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, and The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad. These are some of my favorites. Please put them on a poll or have them as a random one to pick. Thank you!
My favorite obscure pop culture reference is the design on the back of H's van. The demon face. It's part of the art handouts for the original module S1: Tomb of Horrors, for the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.
Nobody gets all the references the first time. It was a delight to sit and watch with you. Each time you spotted something you recognized you face would light up. Maybe watch it again with the kids or a friend who plays video games and watch them as they recognize characters from video games and you will get to experience what we just did for yourself.
In the Ready Player One universe everything takes place in the Oasis. People work in the Oasis, people go to school in the Oasis. People vactaion etc all in the Oasis.
@@xxJOKeR75xx Yeah, it's a fine, fun movie, I just don't get the "One of the best films released in the past 10 years" thing. Since outside of the references, there isn't a whole lot propping it up, and references are pretty shallow entertainment.

Virtual Monday Cassie Yes, you need to watch it a few times. The film is loaded with references and 'easter eggs'. "Meet me at planet Doom" is a reference to the video game "Doom". The avatars are from various other games like Mortal Kombat, Steet Fighter, Tron, Grand Theft Auto IV, Halo, Gears of War, Forza Motorsport and many others that i don't remember / know the names to. The fact most of the main actors were unknown was because they would have distracted from the main 'virtual OASIS world'. Overall, it is a movie packed full of references and characters from movies, anime, comics. games, and tv shows.
As someone who grew up in the 80s, and a huge nerd (still am) this movie was a treat. :) I owned an Atari 2600, my first game console and played Adventure, even found the Easter egg. Good times and good memories. I've give anything to be able to put the pedal in reverse. :D
My favorite thing about this is the Jame Raynor from StarCraft cameo in the very beginning. For anyone who doesn't know, he's the guy in the spacesuit looking armor that's all painted up in stars and stripes. Good ol Jimmy Raynor.
The Iron Giant giving a thumbs 👍 when melting in lava is a reference from Terminator 2 when the T-800 a.k.a Arnold saying his goodbyes to Sarah & John Connor in the end of T-2. And I’m proud that you choose this movie sometimes the soul needs a little freedom, good job 👍

I've never seen a Kong that looked this good. I'm not so sure it's a model of any earlier Kong directly. The face has a monster look more or less descended from the original film. The body, though, is very ape-like, as we saw in Jackson's 2005 remake. It's the perfect combination. You can see both the animalistic and otherworldly monstrous side in him. Going ape with the face like Jackson did made Kong a bit more cuddly than scary.

Bucakaroo Banzai is a dumb, cheesy, sci-fi action adventure movie that feels like it was written by a 10 year old and hasn't aged well at all. That's why I love it!

I'm 99% sure it kept coming in 2nd not because people don't like it, but because people kept thinking 'no, [movie] has to be first for the reference!"
Cassie singing to Twisted Sister made my day!!!
The book by Ernest Cline is basically an homage to 80's culture, specifically early computer games and arcade games. The movie changed quite a bit, perhaps because much of the audience wasn't even alive when old folks like me played games like Joust which figures prominently in the book.
Joust is such a great game. It's a shame that it hasn't had more influence on later games.

Sure, there are quite a few comic con types who think the more easter eggs they find, the more bragging rights they have at their next DnD session.

Maybe watch it again with the kids or a friend who plays video games and watch them as they recognize characters from video games and you will get to experience what we just did for yourself.
This is an AMAZING MOVIE! Especially, if you understand the references. Coming 2nd in any poll means it's great in my eyes 💙
In the Ready Player One universe everything takes place in the Oasis. People work in the Oasis, people go to school in the Oasis. People vactaion etc all in the Oasis.
The magic chant "Anaal nathrak, uthvas bethad..." is from the movie "Excalibur", another movie you really need to watch.
So much nostaglia in this film. One of the best films released in the past 10 years.
I prefer quality writing over "I know what that is"
@@Eidlones Yeah, but it's okay writing with a ton of "i know and love this!". It's not the greatest book/film but it's really good fun.
@@xxJOKeR75xx Yeah, it's a fine, fun movie, I just don't get the "One of the best films released in the past 10 years" thing. Since outside of the references, there isn't a whole lot propping it up, and references are pretty shallow entertainment.
@@Eidlones every movie doesnt need to have this fantastic story that blows our mind. If youve watched ANY movies in the last 10 years, alot of them have been complete dog shit. So "one of the best films in the last 10 years" isnt too far of a stretch. Top gun was ALL nostalgia references and it did great. Its easily one of the best when compared to the garbage weve seen.
@@JoshuaDay0550 Watch more movies released in the past 10 years.
Artemis's actress now plays Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon
Virtual Monday Cassie
Yes, you need to watch it a few times.
As for movie references, holding up the boombox to play "We're Not Going to Take It Anymore" from Twisted Sister from "Say Anything" "No man is a failure who has friends" from "It's a Wonderful Life", Mega Godzilla from "Godzilla vs Mega Godzilla", "Terminator", "Dragonball Z", "Saturday Night Fever", "Krull", and several others.
I think I may have accidentally found the dot, but never thought to take it back to the beginning.
I never owned an Atari 2600 but a couple of friends did, and I have fond memories of Enduro and Pitfall especially.
Pitfall!
My favorite thing about this is the Jame Raynor from StarCraft cameo in the very beginning. For anyone who doesn't know, he's the guy in the spacesuit looking armor that's all painted up in stars and stripes. Good ol Jimmy Raynor.
There are sooooooo many Easter eggs in this movie! I'm glad that you are finally watching it!
Ready Player One should have been called Easter Egg: The Movie.
I literally had this running in the background yesterday for like the 6th time. I guess I'll have to "watch" it again lol.
Its seriously in my top 2 movies for just playing in the background whenever. Such a fun and enjoyable film that always feels like a warm blanket on a cold rainy day.
The Spell they chant is from the 1981 Movie "Excalibur" called the "Charm of Making". Patrick Stewart (Jean Luc Picard) is also in the 81 movie Excalibur.
To testament to your humanity and to your precious soul that you couldn't watch the bathtub scene, there are things that we sometimes simply cannot see, because we cannot UN see them
44:52 Mark! Simon Pegg! "Scotty" in the "Star Trek" movies made since 2009! 🖖
Don’t forget Shaun! 😋
@whitelighter2040 ! Too late! I forgot until I saw your reply! 😉
36:01 36:04 Mecha Godzilla is actually one of Godzilla‘s enemies in several different movies.
And this movie continues the trend of decapitation being the most common means of destroying him. This is one of 7 films MG has been in, he's had his head removed in 5 of them.
It’s funny you mentioned at the beginning how you are proud when you get a movie or pop culture reference, I had a huge smile and felt pride when you immediately new the overlook and your reaction. Big fan keep the good work thanks from Calgary.
I suppose this movie would be like the final exam for a react channel.
This is a favourite book of mine, which is strange as I love so many other genres - but I grew up in the 80s so it's a childhood thing...
"thats the red rum"... cassie thought it was a tidal wave of red rum? thats adorably hilarious 🤣
Yes, she saw it as an on-the-nose message about the dangers of alcohol abuse.
@@jedijones well that makes more sense than it being about the moon landings. 😂
The spell to turn the Orb “bomb” on and off is from the movie “Excalibur”, one of the best film adaptations of King Arthur.
I think Cassie is now driving 88 MPH now... HOORAY!!! 😀 😀 😀
That spell is from the movie Excalibur. The charm of making performed by Merlin. Awesome reference.
I do appreciate that they modeled the Kong's look after 1976.
'76
I've never seen a Kong that looked this good. I'm not so sure it's a model of any earlier Kong directly. The face has a monster look more or less descended from the original film. The body, though, is very ape-like, as we saw in Jackson's 2005 remake. It's the perfect combination. You can see both the animalistic and otherworldly monstrous side in him. Going ape with the face like Jackson did made Kong a bit more cuddly than scary.
@@SJHFoto Happy to be corrected.
@@jedijones I don't know why there was a need for such a long reply. But the face of Kong was molded after the '76/"Kong Lives" suit.
@@jmsmys13ify Thanks. When you are as old as I am, these things are more remembered (well, I was a bit too young to see it in the movies (I was a baby when it came out), but it came on TV a few years after
The Shining part was the funniest. I couldnt stop laughing
No premiere chat, but I love you guys and you know that
The Phrase used to activate/deactivate the orb is Merlin Spell from the movie Excalibur from John Boorman inn 1981
