- Is this a safe space? Okay cool. I don’t do those ACV/Baking Soda soaks to deep clean my locs. Every 6-8 months I deep clean my locs by soaking them in Dawn (about 1/4 cup). I figure if it was aight for the lil oil covered ducks 🦆 then it’s aight for the keratin cells coming out of my head. I make sure the water is almost boiling to help aid breaking down any build up that’s happened since my last deep clean.
I’ve tried the ACV/Baking Soda soaks in the past but they’re usually not strong enough to break down the build up that happens from pollen, working out, traveling, and generally existing.
I know it’s time to do a deep clean when my hair feels “heavy” to me. Even as it’s gotten longer, it usually doesn’t feel heavy unless it’s holding things that don’t belong. Anyway, I hope this helps!
To clarify, this is just how I DEEP clean my locs to get build up out. I still wash my hair with regular shampoo (Trader Joes Tea Tree Tingle shampoo) about twice a week. I don’t know how people can go a month without washing their hair, I have never been able to do that. After 7 days, my scalp starts itching.

when you said twice a week i immediately went wide eye + slack jaw. after a second or two, i remembered 1. you have free form locs, which means no retwisting + 2. you're a runner. 💁🏾♀
so yea i get it now.
if i had to retwist twice a week or even every two weeks i just couldn't have locs. 🫤 i don't have the spoons or ($125|retwist) for that.

@@pri.sci.lla. I mean test on animals in a lab, as in the chemicals they actually use in the soap. Of course they have to market that they care for animals how else would Proctor & Gamble get you to buy their products?
Dawn is pretty much like duct tape! You can use it for everything. LOL😂😁

Yea that’s the same amount of buildup I get after a week of not washing my hair, She obviously has a pretty good cleansing routine between her deep cleanses.

At uni, I once spent 4 hours helping a friend unpick her dreads because she was crying thinking about cutting them out. I fell asleep hands cramping and woke up 5 hours later to see poor Tana still going! It took us 3 days to get them all out and we looked like little t-rexes, our hands were that cramped haha.
Got a new appreciation for the effort black women put into their hair that weekend thats for sure...

Dawn really be that girl tho 🙌🏾 I use it on & in so many different things. It literally powers through everything!!
Ppl go in on Dawn as a solution for buildup but it’s honestly whatever works for a given person. I made a habit of deep cleaning my locs every month to avoid buildup because I have a heavy sebum production on my scalp. Along with oils and sweat, it’s just what I gotta do. I’ve tried ACV and lemon juice, and it just did not move anything. In fact, it’d make even more junk get into my hair. Ever since I switched to Dawn it’s been crazy good. My locs stay clean and they’re never brittle, and my scalp also gets the cleansing it needs. I incorporated Hyaluronic Acid and Rose Hip / JBCastor Oil into my regimen, and my roots are stronger and more moisturized than ever.
Ooooh! I never ever thought about using hyaluronic acid in my hair! I use it on my face all the time and it never even occurred to me to use it for my hair! I am about to look all up into this! THANK you! 😃
I am convinced that people who act like ACV is some sort of magical multi-tasking cure-all are nuts. I occasionally use white vinegar for cleaning but I mean, it definitely depends on what I am cleaning. And as for Apple cider vinegar? That is strictly an ingredient for salad dressings and marinades lol
@@RachelMulwee girl YES 🙌🏾!! I put it in my mist bottle (about 8 full dropper viles of hyaluronic acid, and water - no oils or cream conditioners), and dampen my scalp and locs thoroughly. I also like to run just the acid itself through the loc shafts and then seal it with tea tree and argan oil. And since hyaluronic acid thrives off of humidity, it’s a banger to add into your hot oil treatments while your hair is wrapped up. I don’t rinse out my oil treatment until my next wash day. For that purpose, I stay away from cream based products to avoid extra buildup, just to keep my locs nice and clean.

@@Throatzillaaa idk I use baking soda & ACV on my husbands dreads & they’re VERY soft. Also, If you want to deep clean your mattress you can spray ACV or white vinegar on it & then brush some baking soda over the whole thing & then vacuum it up after it dries & I promise you your mattress looks so much cleaner like literally brand new. I didn’t even know my mattress was that dirty bc it didn’t look like it but after you use that it looks crazy bright white. I think there is something to the vinegar & baking soda thing.
I do the same thing for my sons locks. I don’t tell anyone because I know they would look at me crazy! Dawn dish liquid is the truth!!!!

Okay I’m def going to do this. Its time for my first super deep cleanse and i was actually anxious about using apple cider vingear and lemon. I don’t like the smell of it and also i was worried it was going to do more harm than good. This seems so much easier and better. Thank you

Dawn is amazing! Lol but for real, it cleans everything so much better than products made for whatever ur cleaning. I mix it with hot water and scrub the house, top to bottom. Sometimes I add a little vinegar or bleach, but it's the dawn that really gets in there

Funny how the Universe brings info that you ask for 🤔 I tried the ACV-lemon- baking soda detox last night on my husband and it wasn't very helpful. His texture is softer than mine and it worked for me when I had my locs earlier. Thank you for sharing your method. I'm definitely going to use it🙏🏾💜

I'm so fascinated with how you take care of your locs. My auntie (actually my grandmas best friend) has locs but I thought it would be rude to bombard her with questions especially as a white girl.
I used to use the blue Dawn to remove the glue from my hair weaves back in the day. It dissolves it like acid. I also use Dawn on certain things if some type of grease or oil has gotten on it. It works.
You keep good care of your locs. The water was not even THAT dirty. Good stuff!

They looks really glossy and healthy after wards. Hey I use a tad of dawn dish soap in my laundry along with my regular detergent just to help break down any grime etc. and I love it
