You are doing great work Cathy! Your axel is progressing along nicely! Keep up the great work! It will come! Thank you for sharing this inside look with us! Lots of relatable phrases in this video when I’m working on new jumps 😉
Thank you so much!! It is truly a very difficult feat to try to accomplish after a certain age BUT that doesn't mean it's impossible! Will always try to challenge the boundaries of what people think is possible (:
HI! As one adult skater to another, from the time that i started working on axels in 2009 (im back on the ice for the first time ince gainng 100 lbs and going through major health issues) my coach had me do what felt like thousands of HUGE waltz jumps faste than normal as high as i could get and she would always have me overly emphasize my H position in the hair to get me ready for axels and i still continue to do this to this day! Keep going you go this!
Thank you so much for the kind note Ashley! You as well! Keep on going you got this! Sorry to hear about the health concerns and hope you are recovering well!
I just wanted to say I LOVE your videos! As a 27 year old skater that started about 1.5 years ago, I dream of getting an axel. My biggest roadblock is backspin, if you have any backspin tips for an upcoming video - I’d be all ears☺️
Hi! Thank you so much for the kind note! Oof I would agree, before my backspin was consistent that was a HUGE struggle for me. I talk about this extensively in a skating Q&A video I posted a while back on my channel! There's a whole section on backspin tips there! Let me know if that helps!
I LOVE this progress video! Thanks for sharing! I'm an adult skater also working on getting my single axel. I did some in the harness tonight and my coach said she wasn't supporting me, then of course went and ate shit out of the harness loooool. the struggle is real.
I'm so happy this was helpful! So much of it is mental! On the harness everything is fine and then when I'm off my brain just like shuts off and refuses. Best of luck on your axel! I know you will land it!
Omg same here! I learnt them on a lesson but was not getting them down well, continued practicing in a public skate session and managed to get it down, next lesson was nailing them and was super happy, two days later went for a public skate and for whatever reason this mental block was just not letting me do them AT ALL 😮 anyway I didn’t give up, kept trying, and for some reason just saying “swish” as I turned helped immensely 😂
YES thank you for mentioning this! This is such an important topic. I actually got injured again last week and that made me think that I should do a video on this- definitely stay tuned for an injury recovery video soon!
Hi Cathy i am a beginner skater and I am learning a bunch of new jumps! Could you show the jumps you know how to do and in the order you learned them if that’s not a big ask❤ You are so lucky for being able to start practicing for an axel I hope I get there soon❤
Figure skating is 50% athleticism and 50% mental .I skated a kid started at 3 yrs old, and I learned all the jumps was doing doubles by 9 or 10 years old. I had zero fear . I started skating again at 40 when I put my daughter in classes at 3. Now skating as a middle-aged adult is such a mental game. Things I know I can do ,but my brain takes over and says .. Nope ! I've got all my single jumps back and working a few doubles .I can do them great on the harness ,really no help, just the mental safety of knowing that harness is there. I can't get past the fear.
Yes! You are 100% correct - that's honestly the biggest thing that is stopping me from jumping the axel off the harness! Hopefully one day I can get over that fear of falling but it is so much harder as a grown adult to do this!
Love your videos! I’m 24 and been skating for 2 years and I have tried all jumps on ice except for the axel. I think it’s mostly fear and at this point I’m avoiding it 😂 do you have any tips to get over the fear?
Hey Cathy, thank you for motivating me to keep at it! I sometimes feel a little down when I see children landing axels with ease while i have been trying for about six years now. 😅 Do you also practice a double jump? I feel like my double salchow is more achievable than my axel.
I feel you spiritually on the above! I'm in the same boat and yes I do! I've been starting to practice my double sal in the off season too, and I agree in a way the double sal feels more achievable even when it's 0.5 rotations more. I think it's because the forward takeoff in the axel just makes the technique so hard to learn! But I have faith that both of us will get both the axel AND the double sal one day- so keep cracking at it and keep us all posted on how it goes!
Thank you so much for your videos 💕 I started figure skating in July at 28 years old and watching you makes me feel like my goals are attainable. 🥹 I really appreciate you
Have you ever heard of a manga called Medalist? It's about figure skating, and one of the main characters also deals with the issue of starting the sport later in life. It's an incredible work, and it was the main reason that sparked my interest in the sport. I highly recommend checking it out.
hi!! may i just ask how do u balance your schoolwork (back when u just started) and your working life with ice skating! because im thinking of starting to ice skate again! but im worried that i might not be able to reach the proficiency i want to because of uni and schoolwork… bcs i would imagine ice skating needs v consistent practices!
Hi!! Yes of course! I actually just released a new video this past week of a complete guide of how to balance skating with school/uni! Feel free to comment under that video if you have any additional questions! Hope that helps! (:
We'll be here for both the journey to the axel AND when you land it!
Are you going to Worlds this year
You are doing great work Cathy! Your axel is progressing along nicely! Keep up the great work! It will come! Thank you for sharing this inside look with us! Lots of relatable phrases in this video when I’m working on new jumps 😉
Thank you Ashley! Fingers crossed one day I'll be able to land it successfully!
thank u for all the information and your my inspiration ❤
Of course!! I’m so happy this was helpful- keep going for your goals- you got this!! 🫶🏼💕
When I told someone I was a skater they asked me if I work for Disney on ice :0
omg haha another classic
It’s truly amazing how your so close of landing your axel at this age ❤ I remember me skating 6 hours per day just to land my axel and double s 😭😭
25 and even older it’s still very possible to land an axel. Especially if you’re a generally active/fit/body aware person.
Thank you so much!! It is truly a very difficult feat to try to accomplish after a certain age BUT that doesn't mean it's impossible! Will always try to challenge the boundaries of what people think is possible (:

IKR I'm like honey I can't even do a double- give me a break hahaha
You are doing great. Keep up with work.❤❤❤❤
Thank you for your kind words!! ❤
We are at totally different levels but I feel you on the fear. My coach just started working with me on 3 turns and I was super scared to do that!
omg I literally remember when I first started leaning three turns- they were terrifying so I feel you 100%

@@doriimpact Yes!! Such inspiration

The trick is having no regard for self preservation. Just send it
HAHA truly- choosing figure skating means letting go of self preservation lol
Your core is not holding the bottom and top of your body together in one piece.
