Hello friends! Please subscribe if you enjoyed this video (more videos to come soon!) and comment below what movies/shows would go in YOUR personal "S-Tier" ⛸✨
I genuinely don't know which would be my villain origin story - Ice Adolescence getting cancelled after 7-8 years of waiting or Spinning Out being canceled after 1 season.
It all depends on to what extent you've been able to apply that physics to analyze skating moves. For example physics explains the relationship between edge radius of curvature, speed and lean; how spins are centered (and why they start with a 3-turn); why over-rotation on Axel takeoff leads to under rotation of landing; how checking works; in general why we hold our shoulders and rotate them the way we do; how counterbalance of the free leg works; and how/where we may gain power by pushing against the ice on one foot without putting the other foot down. Plus many more things, I'm sure.
@elizabethf3837 the point is that knowing why a move works doesn't really help you actually perform it. You have to practice to be able to learn that, there's no substitute. Being able to compute the forces and whatnot is pointless. It's actually quite frustrating knowing why it should work when your brain and body are too scared to try or you can't quite perform it yet
One of my little sisters friends trains under Tanya's coach and has gotten to skate with Tanya, that woman is over fifty and still landing(I think) all her doubles, it's genuinely impressive.
i watched yuri on ice in 2021 in the peak of the pandemic and i hated it after i first watched it but i was so full of passion and love for the sport but felt so envious that the sport wasn't as popular since i lived in a tropical country. i moved countries where ice sports were definitely more popular and i coincidentally rewatched the entire show and it all came back to me. yuri's passion genuinely made me get up and go to a learn to skate class and i'm enjoying it so much. it's only been a few months and I'm still working on crossovers but it's the best thing that ever happened!!!
Yuri On ice will forever be the most special to me, it got me into figure skating, i rewached it in the pandemic and became obssesed again with figure skating but i thought i wouldn’t be able to do it until i could pay it by myself, but things happened and my dad told me that he could pay it, it’s been almost a year after that, i started figure skating classes one day after my 18 birthday, 8 of january of 2024 and i have never been happier, i practice a lot, and i will have my first competition in march, i will skate to history maker, because i needed to skate to a Yuri On Ice song for my first season competing. I feel that i’m doing well for the time i have been skating and i love both of my coaches. I just love this sport and as someone who thought wasn’t good at anything it feels so good when i’m able to do good in figure skating. I have never been happier and is all thanks to Yuri On Ice
Surprised at how many movies I’ve seen! I LOVED Ice Princess and Ice Castles as a kid. Yuri on Ice, though, had me in a chokehold. It came out my senior year of college and collegiate track career. That first episode with Yuuri crying in the bathroom from the pressure was SO relatable. Just like me fr moment lol. Definitely thought multiple times that if Yuuri could attempt a quad in the second half of his program I could run a fast 800 at the end of a pent 😤 I wonder if it’ll be even more relatable now that I know more about figure skating 😆 Anyway, thanks for making this video! Gonna have to check out some of the movies/shows I haven’t seen! ✨
Glad you enjoyed it! And agreed- I love when media shows not just the ups of the athlete experience and journey but also the downs of the self- doubt, impostor syndrome and setbacks and kudos to the pieces of media doing that out there
in the 2nd Mighty Ducks, they flip the Hockey Player-to-Figure Skater trope when Ken Wu (a former Olympic figure skater) joins the Mighty Ducks hockey team. LOL
My partner and I watched ice princess a few months ago, and we both agreed that the plot would be 1000% improved if they made the main character and Hayden Panettiere's character gay.
Yuri on Ice: my absolute favorite anime. I'll never forgive mappa for canceling the movie! Also the definitely kissed! They freaking got engaged by the end xD
gonna defend the cutting edge here because the timeline between when he gets recruited and when they win olympic gold is actually about two years which is obviously still unrealistic but a lot more passable than most other hockey player turned figure skater stories. we also see that he spends all day just figure skating with no day job which certainly helps
This. Also the reason she gets paired with him to begin with is because she's very difficult to worth with and no one else wants to skate with her. He is her trainer's last resort.
Yuri on ice was on TV every week at the time. I enjoyed it because many of the characters resembled the current players at the time. Conversely, the author said that the new figure skating anime(Medalist) starting next year will not be associated with real-life skaters. I haven't read the manga, but it's highly rated, so I'm looking forward to it.
4:56 the thing is, these movies usually sell the idea that the characters are gonna be competing at nationals/worlds/olympics so yeah, 16 IS very old for that.
When I was little I was absolutely obsessed with this made for tv movie musical I had on VHS called Snowden on Ice. Snowden is a magical snowman and the movie starred Ekaterina Gordeeva, Scott Hamilton, and Kurt Browning. So if anyone wants some 90s figure skating nostalgia, I highly recommend it.
Medalist actually is coming out in January for winter anime season! Im super excited for it since I adore figure skating. Also the one cool thing about Yuri on Ice is the production team worked with tons of real skaters to capture skating/the moves used in the series. Those guys definitely did their homework! ❤
actually It’s not a such good movie. I’d suggest to watch “The last axel/ Последний аксель» series. The current russian figure skaters carried out jumps in it. And also Evgenia Medvedeva participated in one of scene.
Actually, I used to skate with a man who was a hockey player turned ice dancer, so it can happen. And don't forget--Kurt Browning played hockey while also figure skating for many years! Anyway, I'd love to hear your opinions on various figure skating novels.
I think I was the commenter who suggested this, thank you Cathy! ☺️ An interesting movie you missed is Carmen on Ice- Katarina Witt starred in this figure skating/opera/dance mashup.
Yes you were!! Thank you for your suggestion! OOO I will check that out for sure! Katarina's Carmen program for sure lives in my head rent free all day everyday
there is a french tv film "De feu et de glace" (Of fire and ice) that was made in 2009, and the main character is played by an actress who actually did figure skating when she was younger. It's very stereotypical, big injury, meet a new coach, succeeds at the national championship type of movie but i quite liked it when i was a child
There's also Ice: The Movie (2018 on Amazon video, loved this movie), The Petrichor, Ice Girls, Kiss and Cry, Free Skate Also for Zero Chill nobody is named Axel, it's Archie 😅 The brother isn't sent to a hockey academy, he is picked to be a player on a professional team.
Prepared myself but I was still not ready for the Go Figure slander lol - it’s my ultimate comfort movie from childhood and I still quote holy Kristi Yamaguchi daily ahaha
Also LOVE the Cutting Edge remakes with Christy Carlson Romano… same hockey player tropes but there’s one where the girl is the hockey player turned pairs skater
here's a list of all media mentioned with their respective tiers movies: • Blades of Glory [A] • I, Tonya [S] • Ice Princess [B] • Ice Castles [A] • The Cutting Edge [B] • Champions [B] • On Thin Ice [B] • A Promise Kept [S] • Ice Angel [D] • Go Figure [C] anime: • Yuri on Ice [S] • Ginban Kaleidoscope [D] • Medalist (tbr) [A] shows: • Spinning Out [C] • I Have Nothing [S] • Zero Chill [D] documentaries: • Meddling [S] • Freeze [B] • On Edge [B] • Tessa&Scott Show [B] • Be Good Johnny Weir [B] • Javier Fernández. Rompiendo el Hielo [B] • The Ice King [A] reality shows: [C] • Skating with the Stars • Dancing on Ice • Battle of the Blades • Skating with the Celebrities
Battle of the Blades is actually pretty good! It’s pro hockey players paired with well-known Olympic-level pairs skaters and ice dancers. The performances are way better than the other two shows where the contestants are various types of celebrity with a higher learning curve. Plus it just oozes Canadian pride, which is fun!
Medalist is being animated this season, and it's a conteder for A or S tier series imo. It's a passion project of a fan of a VA, researching said VAs hobby, and making a manga out of it in hopes to get said VA to voice the main character of the manga.
If you want another figure skating anime, I would suggest Skate Leading Stars. Its not bad, not very realistic (they are doing quintiple jumps occassionally), but the plot is decent and its pretty well made. Not to the standard of Yuri on Ice, but its good. Oh yeah, it group figure skating competitions (5 or so skaters put together a short and free skate program and compete).
If you want to see early figure skating movies from the 1920s-1940s, Sonja Henie, a Norwegian Figure Skater was in a bunch of Hollywood movies. It would be more of a historical look at figure skating because figure skating has gotten a lot more intense & extreme since then. It was more about dancing than landing a difficult jump.
there is the documentary”Medvedeva VS. Medvedeva” which captures the story of evgenia medvedeva’s career and why she quit so early when she could achieved more. the story about the scandal with her coach and Alina Zagitova and how figure skating damaged her spine (and legs if I remember correctly)
This was a really fun video😊 the movie ice Princess was what first got me into figure skating when I was a kid. I actually started skating at the age of 14, which is also considered old, but I didn't care, because I was just so obsessed with skating❤ I still watch figure skating videos every day on RUclips. There are two Chinese series all dramas that involve figure skating that I would recommend: 'Skate into love' and 'To fly with you'. I really wish that someone would make a cute romantic k drama where the main character is the figure skater. 😊 I also really wish that there were more movies about solo male figure skaters!

OMG aw hello! That was such a sweet and creative comment- thank you for watching and subscribing- I always appreciate that so much and thank you for the suggestion! Looking forward to making more videos to come so stay tuned!
It wasn't mentioned in the video but I quite enjoyed the biopic film about Torvill and Dean that ITV did, it was quite good I've watched it at least twice 😅 Will say the documentary series Freeze that BBC did, which was mentioned in the video, was really cool ❤ Loved this video and so I'm absolutely subscribing ❤ Think "Yuri!!! on Ice" rejuvenated my already big love of figure skating (I do have a preference for Ice Dance though 😅) Love from the UK ❤
The anime is not about competitions but Pretty Rhythm Aurora Dream was the first time I saw figure skating...loved the clothes, songs and jumps ...The anime started my obsession with figure skating😊
Ok they totally kissed💅🏽 🦋 (Like think about it. Victor is totally a hugger and a cuddling person, and has hugged Yuuri on camera multiple times. Why would Yuuri's fam go 😧😯🙄☺️😳😨 if it was just another hug? )
I personally agree with a lot of your thoughts regarding skating show and movies: Personally, I would put Ice Princess in at least A tier if not S tier. I have a huge bias towards Ice Princess because I started taking figure skating seriously due to that movie since I wanted to become Casey when I grew up. While how fast she got good was not realistic at all, I think the way the other characters were portrayed was mostly accurate. How protective the parents are of their skaters, the interactions between the skaters for the time, the expenses, the training methods, the social life and sacrifices you have to make as a skater, the scoring system, how competitions look, how you have to test to compete, what regionals and sectionals looks like, the skating culture as a whole I feel they did a very good job portraying for it being made in 2005. Yes, some things were overblown for dramatics (like we don’t skate sectionals in spotlights on tv, but I understand they wanted to make it more dramatic), but looking back at that movie now, I appreciate how accurate they portrayed the sacrifices we make and how serious and intense the culture is. Blades of Glory, while nowhere near accurate is always a comedic classic in my household. Would personally rank it B. Ice Castles I don’t remember enough to rank accurately, but love the story, so probably would put it in A. I Tonya I watched on a plane going to Spain. I didn’t think much of it. Would probably go in B for me. The cutting edge movies I was never a fan of, I would put them in C. I’ve never seen any of the anime’s, so cannot really rank them, but agree that any movie where there is body switching, is just too much for me, so put any of those reincarnation movies in D. I totally forgot about Go Figure. The 9 year old would put that movie in B only because of how much I liked anything Disney Channel at the time. For documentaries, I loved Ice King as I love watching John Curry! I would put ice king in S. I forgot about Rompiendo el Hielo. I really want to see that one as I love Javier Fernandez! Spinning Out I would put in S for all the reasons you mentioned, but I see it the other way. Yes it’s super messy, but it makes me want to keep watching it because of how messy it is. It keeps me interested while Zero Chill was so boring to me, I would put zero chill in D. I remember also when skating with the stars came out and agree 100% with you. It was interesting at first, but with skating under spotlights being hard to film, how long it takes for someone to get decent at skating and all the injuries that were happening that took many teams out in the first 3-4 weeks, it would never look as good as dancing and would be much harder to keep interest with. I would rank these shows B only because it’s skating. Thank you for all of your opinions on these shows and introducing me to some new ones I’ve never heard of before. I’ll have to check them out 😊
Nancy Kerrigan is 10 years older than I am but when I was a teen and skating at a fairly high level when the whole Nancy/Tonya and then Nancy/ Oksana Olympics were going on my mom was at a very high level in USFSA governance and she once told me she had to attend a dinner with Nancy and that she had never met a more full grown brat in her life. That her mom was there too and she was even like that to her own mother.
I really wanna do figure skating but it feels like I’m too old to start, I’m 13/14, no flexibility and I can’t even skate period, glued to the wall. It’s the same for ballet but I really just wanna do these things but I can’t 😭
I feel like spinning out would be just a little more accurate if she went into ice dancing instead of pairs. I just keep hearing that ice dancing has less jumps which would make more sense for someone who has trauma from being injured during a jump to transition to
Tbh it's no surprise YoI is so high standard - Japan literally had the Great Three (Takahashi, Oda, Kozuka) to interest the director, the double M (Mura and Machida) to get the scriptwriter obsessed, and finally Hanyu's Sochi's gold to make it profitable to push a work about male figure skaters, when before all ppl focused on was Mao Asada and EVENTUALLY Shizuka Arakawa. It would genuinely be a waste to lose that hype and some bitter part of me does wonder if, had Yuzuru or Shoma got gold in 2022, Ice Adolescence would get a green light... (as a side note, synopsis doesn't do Ginban Kaleidoscope justice - it's basically a fanfic about what could happen if IOC allowed Mao Asada to compete at Torino despite her being still below the age requirement, instead of forcing Japan to send Arakawa. I feel the paranormal romance was there just to excuse niche topic and while I still giggle at how the production team assumed their totally-not-Mao-Asada would win silver while Arakawa got them gold, I did enjoy the show, for all the hot mess that happened. Then again, back then I could only tell when ppl jumped axel and nothing more lol)
One of my favorite anime is KaleidoStar, and while the main premise is a magical cirque, there is a short figure skating arc in the second season. Totally unrealistic, from skates to trapeze, definitely high on the "do not try this at home" level.
Physics wasn’t the reason Casey Carlyle could skate. As seen in the first clip in the movie, it’s implied that Casey skates on her pond before she goes to do her homework. I’ve watched Ice princess A MILLION times and I’ve always just assumed that Casey had been skating on that pond since she was a kid, and the whole bit about her wanting 5 more minutes to skate instead of do her homework proves that she’s always loved skating more than physics but she just wouldn’t allow herself to (likely because of her mother, her mom hated figure skating for no reason and wanted her to go to Harvard). Casey is very insecure, so when she starts succeeding in figure skating, she just blames it on “physics” but in reality it was her passion and time and effort she put in. We also see her grades slipping and her going to that rink at 4am, getting a job to pay for lessons, lying about where she was to train etc. Casey didn’t magically get a triple salchow. She had taught herself the basics and so when she finally applied herself at what she was actually passionate about she succeeded.
11 is no way too old to start skating, even competitively! chaeyeon kim who is one of the top female skaters right now only started skating seriously at 10 years old :)
"Ice Princess" was laughably ridiculous, IMO. 🤣 I'm one of those IRL male figure skaters, and it took me about 5 years to land a triple salchow, so... yeah. I agree with you 💯 I'll admit that I'm not a fan of Michelle Trachtenberg. It's a Buffy the Vampire Slayer thing. I'm sure she's a lovely person, but the premise of that movie was silly af 😏 Also, "A Promise Kept" had a beautiful musical score. It's a tragic story, and Oksana unfortunately continued struggling with substance abuse she the Olympics. In terms of Oksana in the 94 Olympics, Nancy was robbed of the Gold Medal from my perspective. 3 clean triple jumps, tons of posing/prancing, and a wobbly double-double combo were no match for Nancy's content. Yes, Oksana was arguably more artistic. Regardless, five 5.8s and one 5.9 for technical merit was unbelievable considering the actual content in her long. I'm not bitter 🙃 I'm just disappointed the judging overall was so wonky. I do think Nancy handled herself very poorly, but after becoming a Mom, she appeared to be much happier and less contentious overall. At the end of the day, the judging was wildly inaccurate in both the short and long programs. Excellent video and tier list! I'm so glad I found your channel!! 💙
Hiii, ive never been this early but i need help, its my sisters first figure skating competition in April , she’s going to be eleven and she’s not sure what song to chose, do you have any recommendations
@@Love_skatincc hi! Of course happy to help! Which musicals does she like by chance? That’s a good starting point- I think the greatest showman has been a popular one that would have good age appropriate selections! Never enough by Loren Allred is a beautiful piece! If you can tell me a bit more about her preferences I can make more recommendations- hope that helps!
you forgot to talk about Harley and Katya - an Australian Pairs skating team documentary on how she was Russian and him Australian and their sudden success ultimately resulting in her suicide.
You missed my fave movie haha, Ice Girls (has Elvis Stojko in too which is cool) - one of the more realistic and charming skating movies among a bunch of crap lol. Why can't we have some normal skating movies... I want the skating version of Bring it On. I do love Ice Princess though. Insanely unrealistic, but also responsible for getting so many of us into figure skating. Also, just fyi, Tai's name is pronounced 'tie' not 'tay' :)
They are making a biopic about Ondrej Nepela in my country. Not sure if you are aware of him but he was a big deal at least in Europe at his time and is still in my country. He was also gay and most probably died from complications from AIDS. It was before my time but I'm really curios about the movie.
I’m with you on the Netflix series. How tf is pairs less scary than singles? She’s scared of jumping so she turns to having someone throw her, hold her extended above their heads while spinning, and doing camel spins right next to her? Yeah, I’m throwing the BS flag on this one.

Yuri on ice is THE REASON that got me into skating as an adult it is just so inspiring - Yuuri, the most relatable character ever exists 😭😭😭😭

True! That show is Canadian through and through!
Medalist is being animated this season, and it's a conteder for A or S tier series imo.
It's a passion project of a fan of a VA, researching said VAs hobby, and making a manga out of it in hopes to get said VA to voice the main character of the manga.
as a Spanish speaker it took me a moment to understand you were saying rompiendo el hielo.
@@CheyenneSedai LOL I sincerely apologize it has been a while 😅
watched spinning out randomly cause i was bored and found it and now im LOCKED IN! came here for recs
Now we are talking, generally been waiting for someone to talk about this!
Thanks for watching!
OH WHAT damn haha anything can happen in the anime world apparently
Oh WOW - didn't know that even existed! Will check it out for sure
Where can I watch it?
@@bekus3170 to be honest I don’t know I just read an article about it a number of months ago and saw the trailer.
I know it sounds craaaazy but I really, reaaaaaalllly recommend Ginban Kaleidoskop it’s sounds crazy but its really, really good🥺
This was a really fun video😊 the movie ice Princess was what first got me into figure skating when I was a kid.
As someone who has a playlist of every figure skating movie and show I know, this helped me out lmfao
Look up Blades of Courage movie from the 1980s. It is in many ways realistic but also full of tropes. Available on RUclips.
@@elizabethfrootloop7814 thank you for suggesting!
I actually purchased that movie years ago on eBay. Best $5.00 I ever spent. 😀
There is also anime series skate leading stars. In summary hot guys in cute outfits skating in groups amd the plot is kinda good
HAHA I'm dead- great synopsis "hot guys in cute outfits"
Death Parade also has a skating scene in episode 11. I would like to see you react on that scene too
Fun fact:
zero chill was filmed at the rink I go to lol x

It wasn't mentioned in the video but I quite enjoyed the biopic film about Torvill and Dean that ITV did, it was quite good I've watched it at least twice 😅
Will say the documentary series Freeze that BBC did, which was mentioned in the video, was really cool ❤ Loved this video and so I'm absolutely subscribing ❤
Think "Yuri!!! on Ice" rejuvenated my already big love of figure skating (I do have a preference for Ice Dance though 😅)
Love from the UK ❤
Thank you for watching and subscribing! Appreciate you
MEDALIST IS HERE?!!!
Edit: *celebrating cuz she likes it💖 *also the girl's rival's coach is so goddamn fineeee
@@DaveCalungsod HAHA anime skating coaching are always so goddamn fine 😂
The anime is not about competitions but Pretty Rhythm Aurora Dream was the first time I saw figure skating...loved the clothes, songs and jumps ...The anime started my obsession with figure skating😊
Вау, есть люди, которые знают это аниме😍
you should read the graphic novel spinning, it's one of my fav books, it's a memoir abt a synchronized skater in texas!
Ok they totally kissed💅🏽 🦋
(Like think about it. Victor is totally a hugger and a cuddling person, and has hugged Yuuri on camera multiple times. Why would Yuuri's fam go 😧😯🙄☺️😳😨 if it was just another hug? )
The very first figure skating movie I watched was My Sergei. I'm surprised it's not mentioned here.
I would like to mention ' To fly with you 'a chinese series though it not only on figure skating
I really liked “Sonya. The white swan”. It’s about Sonya Heny
I personally agree with a lot of your thoughts regarding skating show and movies:
Personally, I would put Ice Princess in at least A tier if not S tier.
I’ll have to check them out 😊
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!!
when will we get a figure skating romcom where the guy is the skater and the girl is the hockey player
The ginban kaleidoscope hateeee :( They never actually switch bodies he just hunts her
Blades of Glory using the Flash Gordon theme song as the music for their routine should put it into Triple S Tier :P
It's always montreal and it's always either Lutz or Axel they fall on 😭
HAHA REAL
The obligatory Russian coach 😹👏🏻. I totally wanna watch all of these. ⛸🎬
I subscribed!!!! I love figure skating but I'm just a beginner 😅
@@Anna-y7c2z you got this! You can do it! I share a lot of videos and resources here for beginners so feel free to check those out if helpful!
Have you ever watched the OLD classic "Sonja Henie" movies? They are the ones that got me interested in ice skating.
My dream is to see a good movie about male single skating (maybe a biopic), all the FS movies are about women/pair skating, rarely ice dancing
OOOO I agree that would be so interesting
Oh, you didn't include the Pretty Rhythm and Prince of Rhythm franchises, granted the skating aspect if much more on the backburner.
I was like, ah, a super niche video, nice lets listen and then I realized I know a lot of these titles omg.
Can you please write a list with the name of the movies
Zero chill being last is heart breaking
All the comments about YOI getting them into skating.... meanwhile I started because of Blades of Glory lmao
HAHA what a way to get into skating
Spinning Out should hvae been in S tier
Yes, I totally agree!
i clicked on this video to ensure yuri on ice was recognized as the S tier masterpiece it is.
There is also anime called "death parade" it have figure skating content in it
I’m so sad Kiss and Cry didn’t make it on the list!
omg never heard of that one before! Will check it out!
One of my favorite anime is KaleidoStar, and while the main premise is a magical cirque, there is a short figure skating arc in the second season. Totally unrealistic, from skates to trapeze, definitely high on the "do not try this at home" level.
There is one called kiss and cry but its more about a real skater who got throat cancer more about her then skating
This was a super interesting video. Does anyone know, if someone did this for books?
U forgot skate leading stars
maybe because it's out of the scale
11 is no way too old to start skating, even competitively! chaeyeon kim who is one of the top female skaters right now only started skating seriously at 10 years old :)
Yuri on ice getting me into ice skating Olympics
I, Tonya is one of my favorite movies at all
How can anyone encourage Tonya's fake
Me me me story
The REAL King of Men's Figure Skating was Toller Cranston. Watch his old specials, he was THE Pioneer. Best to ever do it.
What about Harley and Katya?
"Ice Princess" was laughably ridiculous, IMO. 🤣 I'm one of those IRL male figure skaters, and it took me about 5 years to land a triple salchow, so... yeah. I agree with you 💯
I'll admit that I'm not a fan of Michelle Trachtenberg. It's a Buffy the Vampire Slayer thing. I'm sure she's a lovely person, but the premise of that movie was silly af 😏
Also, "A Promise Kept" had a beautiful musical score.

Thank you so so much, she loves the greatest showman but I think she wants a happiest maybe mor eupbest song

you forgot to talk about Harley and Katya - an Australian Pairs skating team documentary on how she was Russian and him Australian and their sudden success ultimately resulting in her suicide.
@@eljj7968 thanks for letting me know about Tai! And oh my after all my Reddit research I still ended up missing a couple 😂
