Dreamworks wanted Shrek to rival Disney so much, that they made a THX logo with Shrek and Donkey, since most Disney DVDs were certified by THX! It's clear that DreamWorks wanted to rival Disney.
This trailer/logo was supposed to appear in front of the theatrical release of "Monsters Inc.", but was pulled when Disney threatened to terminate THX's services for Disney's video/DVD releases.

Man, and I thought them rushing Antz to come out a month before Pixar’s A Bug’s Life was petty.
I was only one year old at the time of Monsters Inc's release, but I'd like to imagine if this actually happened, some people might think they accidentally walked into a screening of Shrek.
Had this happened, it would have been a clever sneak attack by DreamWorks to show their film in front of a Disney one.
@@AndrewsMagicandMoreand George Lucas’s company byline was supposed to be credited on the logo in the original. It was edited out in 2006, with enough video editing power, it can easily be recreated.
Fun fact: This trailer was made in 2001 because they wanted it to premiere with the first Shrek, but was delayed after Disney threatened to blackmail THX since they were under a contract with them at the time. It eventually premiered with Shrek The Third in 2007 after the contract expired.
The mouse really hated DreamWorks so much that they tried to threaten THX.
Just imagine if Disney bought THX.

They stop short as they notice "the audience is watching," and Donkey says, "Uh oh..." He and Shrek look at each other and chuckle awkwardly as Shrek raises the logo (apparently made out of cardboard) back up. Though not as loud as before, the Deep Note starts again, and the logo shines in green. During the last few seconds, Donkey walks in while playing a kazoo. When it fades out, Shrek yells, "Donkey!", and as Donkey mutters, "OK, OK! Chill Shrek...", they both walk away, as the THX logo fades out as well.

I remember seeing this when Shrek The Third came out in theaters. Brenden Theaters 16 in Vacaville, California, had THX certified sound systems, and I saw this before the film started.

2024 update: This trailer went unused NOT because Pixar sued PDI DreamWorks, but really because THX just didn't to put any movie characters in for their trailers (although it wasn't the case for Horton, however).
I guess they had different ideas back then.

In the original 2001 version, the Lucasfilm byline was supposed to be in the trailer. You can kinda still see it in one frame if you slow it down to 0.25x.

Is this from a DVD?
As far as I know, it never made any DVD releases. It was rumored to have been, but none of the rumors are true. It *WAS* supposed to be in those releases, but was removed at the last minute, supposedly because Disney threatened to cut ties with the company over the trailer because the home video releases of Shrek were on the same day as Monsters Inc's theatrical release (November 2, 2001). Disney, being Disney, has actually denied this theory, but THX did state that it was due to not wanting to be associated with a specific film. Eventually it debuted on the THX website to promote Shrek The Third, while also premiering on the UK theatrical releases of that film.
And yeah, it was supposed to be released on November 2nd, 2001, because if you look really closely, you can still see the Lucasfilm LTD text above the THX logo. This was an editing mistake.
