The drop off from 1st to 2nd at the shaw classic is so much more reasonable than WSM, Giants Live, Arnolds and WUS. Rogues drop off from the podium was quite high after the top 3 which seemed more reasonable.
I do hope Martins does do one more WSM but financially I understand why he might be exclusively compete for the Rogue Invitational

There should be a sizable gap between 1st and 2nd, because well it's first, and there should be an extra incentive to push for it. I think the podium should have the fair share of money, but 4th to last do need to come up a bit. Just a bit.

Definitely agree on the need for a better spread of prize money. I mean, would you rather have one rich guy who wins it all or enable an entire community of athletes to live off their sport? I'd prefer the latter. In the end, it's basically a job and a costly one at that.

    • @kingofthenorth4550
      @kingofthenorth4550 Год назад +11

      That makes no sense bro.
The one rich guy deserves that money. The 1st place winner came prepared and was just the better athlete that day. Not saying all those guys don’t come prepared but in reality we only really care about the podium finishers. Podium finishers are the ones who put on the best performance. 4th-5th place winners made it entertaining for the show because they are still trying to battle for the podium spot. Makes sense to pay the highest amount to podium winners then balance the rest to other competitors. Let’s say you were a boss in giving out bonus money based on yearly performance and attendance. You would reward the money based on best to worse.

@@kingofthenorth4550 There are two extremes, then the middle. The person you were responding to wasn't suggesting a flat prize pool where there's no point to winning first, but you responded as if they had.
If someone can make a living on being good enough to be invited and entertaining, they can devote more time to the sport and it grows as a whole.
Eddie didn't win WSM until he found a sponsor who paid him to quit his day job. Luke didn't get close on the log record while he was on an oil rig for months at a time, and Hafthor despite his ridiculous genetics didn't get REAL good until that GoT money came in.
Allowing more people to devote more time to strongman makes the whole sport better. And that's not the same as taking away first prize.
Maybe instead of $80k/$4k first/last prize, you de $75k/$6k. Barely a drop for #1 but a 50% gain for last.
Don't get caught on extremes, it doesn't help anyone.

Great video. I love the sport and wish the atheletes made more money. My gripe is not with the competitors or officials, but the marketing and promoting. In 2011, the WSM competed in Charlotte, NC. This is less than 15 miles from my house. There was zero media or promotional coverage about the event. I would have gladly paid for tickets for my family to see the event! You can imagine my shock when the event was televised in December, and I realized that I missed the opportunity to see the event. I appreciate that these athletes do it mostly for the love of the sport (something missing in most sports today); but I firmly believe that more promotion and monetization would lead to having more money to pay the athletes.

I also very much like the idea of everyone at the comp at the very least recouping their costs for attending.
Many, the majority in fact, of athletes and martial artists don't do it as a living. Their day jobs support that passion. There are plenty of Olympic athletes that have to do fundraising and basically beg for money, just to go to the Olympics. It's not until you get to the ultra elite that most athletes can sustain themselves via their athletic endeavors.

But that’s what will really help grow the sport and increase strength in depth (no pun intended!) if more athletes can start earning enough so they can go full time or at least part time - with the addition of sponsors and brand marketing etc too.
I like the way a lot of the promoters like Brian Shaw, Rogue and Clash are encouraging fans to sign up to live streams with guarantees that it will go towards the athletes payouts. I’d probably watch them anyway but I’d pay more know that than if it was only going to the promoters!

I'd be happy to see money skimmed of the top of the winners prize and filtered to the bottom places. If £2000 is an average jobs monthly wage in the UK then this should be the starting place of last position upwards. Rogues winner prize money is pretty extensive I think. 50-80k is good enough winners money, increase lower places money. At some point top class strongmen will only do one comp a year because their win paid out enough.
How does the medical situation work when strongmen get injured. Is it all privately paid for? In UK we have the NHS, USA its medical insurance. I know competitions provide medical funding but what if you get injured training at home. Is this additional costs? I'm starting to wonder how Loz actually survived doing strongman.

You’ve got to be able not only to make a living, but to be motivated. After all, it’s a battle for glory. As the overall fan base increases, prizes will increase as revenue goes up. It’s in everyone’s best interests to recruit fans to the sport. Fans of Eddie will watch strongman. The community owes Eddie. Big names should get big prizes. Then your fame earns you extra bucks too. Which you spend on being more famous, which attracts fans to the sport. Money is power. What else is there to compete for?
    That’s what I reckon anyway 🤣

Giants Live have the opportunity to earn more money with multiple shows through social media, ticket sales, livestream etc. Their operation also costs a lot more to run with multiple arena bookings, hotels, flights and food for 10+ athletes 6 times a year. It’s really hard to compare a once a year show to someone running 6 shows a year. Likewise with champions league who’ll be paying less prize money but they’re running 16 competitions a year.

I see a lot of commenters saying to take money from the top and filter throughout.
But I'd rather see a push to get even more money from sponsors given as prize.
Lee Haney won the Mr Olympia title and earned $50,000 in... 1985!
(The winner in 2020 took home $400,000)
That money came from sponsors. The nutrition companies, the equipment company's. Which has grown so much since then.
--But most of the sponsorship monies still gets spent on bodybuilders.
How much goes to Powerlifters? Probably very little.
Strongman as a brand needs a bigger way to identify itself.
That would begin with making a federation and having consistency in events.
But that would also cripple the "sport" by limiting expansion in events.
    But anyhow.
Good to see current payouts increasing. If not at a snails pace.

Imagine if France and Brazil just didn't show up to the FIFA World Cup! I would hate to see strongman become a sport with a million confusing federations like boxing or (god forbid) powerlifting. Even from when there was the IFSA / WSM divide we now have the debate around whether Z or Vasyl could have got extra WSM titles etc.
