- I'm so happy here. So many people here sign and I can converse freely with them, interject right on the spot, and I can feel myself finally escaping the quiet, shy, and nervous mask I wore for years. I can finally be true to my outgoing self. Even those who don't sign here are understanding of Deaf culture and Deaf peers through constant exposure with the prominent Deaf community both in RIT and Rochester as a city. This is the start of some amazing things I just know it.
My name is Andy and I was born Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing and unable to speak, so sign language is my native language. I do music covers in American Sign Language (ASL), as well as tutorials and other fun series incorporating ASL! Sign Language allows a different perspective and experience in music, it truly shows the emotions and concepts behind the songs' meanings.

I just watched the Two Unique Brothers video and what you had to say about truly loving yourself struck a chord. maybe a stupid and ignorant question, but is it possible to have a sort of “implant” or something else to make his tongue long enough to reach his teeth or the back of his mouth to help him articulate? He mentioned that his tongue was basically too small to correctly pronounce words, and i was wondering if modern technology would offer him a solution for that?

So I think the biggest thing is that he seems to be living a happy life without too many restrictions. A surgery, especially for something like a tongue, especially with any kind of grafting/ transplant would be very difficult, expensive, and painful. I am sure that part of why such a procedure isn’t around yet is simply because learning sign language/adapting may be easier for a large amount of people struggling with such an issue rather than getting an experimental and painful procedure done.
Science wise: I’m not 100% sure because I’m not a pro but I am in a biology undergraduate program. The two biggest issues I would anticipate would be
1.) finding tissue that would work for a tongue. You would probably need a cadaver tongue.
2.) the tongue’s crazy innervation. The tongue has a whole bunch of nerves which are extremely difficult to connect to a transplanted organ.
3.) the amount you use your tongue would make recovery extremely difficult.
That being said, I’m sure that there are other issues (soft palate deformity) amongst other which would make sound articulation difficult.
