I was thinking that too. In some near misses the judges looked disappointed.
And NONE of this actually happens as a model or the model industry.
The REAL model industry never took these girls serious and since the phoroshoots were sooooo dramatic and over the top, no REAL agencies wanted to use them.
They couldn't use ANY of those pictures in their portfolios.
IF they felt like giving them to them.

Second they could've just said to her that for these type of occasions clients prefer to see models without makeup, there were no need to humiliate her like that.
Third (I'm not joking) in some occasions they told some girls to wear more makeup.
The producers thought it would be more scandalous that way. Clearly they were right.
Did they REALLY just do a photo shoot where they sprayed water in the models and critiqued that the water they added looked like drool as of the model controls that.

I think their "logic" is that she should've given a better photo so that her 'best' photo didn't have the water on her chin. But that's just a guess. I've never really gotten how they choose 'the best' photo and then say awful things about it.

These runway challenges were made solely to humiliate the models... to make “good TV”.

@@shelbyc7285 While runways are set up to entertain the audience, the main purpose is to draw attention to your clothes. They are also not cheap. In other words, no one in their right mind would set up a run way that is too dangerous and complicated and bring out inexperienced models. And yes, sometimes the heels are really high, and sometimes models fall as a result. Accidents are not desirable, but do happen.
I don't see in what way that would be a good training at all. Runways are stressful enough without obstacles.
Lot of the photoshoots and challenges from antm were extremely unrealistic.

@@shelbyc7285 a lot of the girls had serious problems with what was going on, but there's a lot of reasons they felt pressured. Not a real gun but there was a lot of issues that go into it.

They are lolol I WOULD NEVER as a designer have this much distracting BS going on during a runway making people look at stuff that isnt my clothes. It's so counter productive
And even if they did use something like this for a show, it would take hours and hours of rehearsals to perfect the timing, no one would let it just be improvised, hoping for the best and hoping for models to wing it...

When they OBLIGATED her to remove her makeup I was so mad, she looked fine and even if she came with a fullface of drag makeup they had no rights to make something like that.
She looked gorgeous and it probably took her some time to apply that makeup. I would’ve been so mad. They get criticized if they show up simple and natural to the judging and they also get criticized if they look good. You really can’t win on this show

They used these girls as action figures making them do stupid/dangerous stuff by saying "If you want to become a model you need go do this", it's disgusting.

Krista from this cycle did an ANTM interview w Oliver Twixt and mentioned that most of them got hit/fell, but they edited it to make it seem like it was just Alexandra who fell, for the story and she was the only one who fell twice

I love these series Jessica does. What I really hate about ANTM is that they don’t respect some of the models decision and that pisses me off especially when they are sending someone home. There’s also a conveyor belt...it’s a lot awful

Her mom who was her manager wouldn’t have even signed her up for any of these runway shows if it was like this! Even if it was Versace back from the dead to do his final fashion show! Only thing Tyra had to deal with was maybe some bullying! But she was able to voice her opinion and able to choose gigs. She also makes a lot of excuses as to why the girls should have been able to do it. While not ever having to do it herself.

They actually did do a blindfolded runway in Cycle 11. There’s also a conveyor belt runway in Cycle 15, which was probably the most dangerous one they did.

The conveyer belt where almost everyone struggled. It was so awful.

I believe Eugenia cut her leg when she fell. She was bleeding when she fell. I think someone could easily fall the wrong way and hit their head.
The first photoshoot of this cycle is crazy too. They make the girls chose ONE article of clothing each and they have to be nude otherwise.
The judging portion was pretty divisive that week. You should check it out!
I remember being so shocked when that episode aired! I was probably a tween at the time and it honestly scared me a bit, even though I had no intentions of being a model. Just the thought of someone forcing me to be naked in room full of people was terrifying (then and now).

I remember the runway challenge in Asia's Next Top Model where they had to walk on the side of a building. THAT was insane. But at least the host, Cindy, did it to show the models that she could do it. I wonder why Tyra didn't walk that clock runway, huh... Nevermind, I know why.
They had that same challenge in ANTM as well actually. And yeah tyra definitely didnt do it. It was nighttime as well and then they had to walk a regular runway right after. It was season 20

What happened with the background? Not only is it blurry, but it also looks like nighttime when the shoot was during the day with bright blue sky. The "rain" looks like snowflakes in some pictures.

I actually watched quite a few seasons of this show growing up, but when I was younger I obviously didn't know how toxic the judging panel was. One thing I DID question a lot was how they blamed the models for not looking good in the photos. They say that that was her best photograph but they could've literally picked the worst and said it was the best they had! I really like that you as a photographer is giving good insight into this issue (and also how problematic this whole damn show was)
Alexandra had one of the more difficult garments to walk in, heels and stairs don't mix, then when she was taking her stride too long in that tight dress, plus swinging pendulums, just a recipe for disaster. At least she didn't break an ankle, cause she could have.
Not to mention a long train!
There was this one challenge where they make the girls walk in like the tallest heels you could imagine. Like heels that arnt even made to be walked in but to be a display peice or just to pose in for photos. Yeah a girl fell and hurt her ankle really bad

What always gets me, as an amateur model: you always work together. Model, photographer, whoever else - you all want to get the best result and be as comfortable as possible. Because that's how you get the best result.
This is just, demanding and not anywhere near as constructive criticism, especially with impressionable young models that you have such control over

Naduah (the bald girl) was ROBBED I get so mad every time I see this cycle because all the interesting-looking girls got eliminated early cause the producers wanted the white girls with microagrressive racism to stay so they can make more drama.

I use to watch this show all the time when I was a kid. I never realized just how toxic it was. The models are just there to MODEL. It's the photographers job, as well as the rest of the crew to make that model look good. Literally none of these girls needed to be sent home.
Watching this again just makes me think how much Raina should have won! Her photo was so stunning ❤️

I have a theory, hear me out lol. I’m guessing that during the little interviews, the models are asked something along the lines of “Do you think you’re gonna win this competition?” And most of the models would probably be like “hell yeah!” because confidence is good right. Anyways I think the producers intentionally put that clip of her saying that because it would make her look worse, especially after falling twice. To make us all think “oh well it serves her right”. That’s my theory lol.
Another thing...honestly Toccara was the first full figured model on ANTM and she set the bar sooo high and no other full figured model measured up...until Alexandria she had such great potential!
I have questions for anyone who works on fashion shows: Is this set piece of pendulums something that might actually occur? And would they give the models the opportunity to do practice walks? There feels like some OSHA issues with this...
I'm not from the industry but just logically thinking adding something like that to a runway just doesn't make sense. A runway is supposed to present clothes so why ad something that drags the attention away from them? On a runway like that, no one would pay attention to the clothes, only the obstacles. Why would any designer choose to do something like that?
Imagine photographing the clothes and this giant pendulum covers the whole model. Worst idea ever.
I'm a fashion design student and since we make and model our creations, there are (or used to be before the rona) shows and walks. Any more complicated choreography was practiced twice or more and we needed to do more than one practice walk as a group to sync up the music and our tempo (so we all walk at a relatively same speed). I don't think any big names in the industry are opposed to doing the same thing if they want their show to look cohesive and not like a mess.
No they make these challenges just for them to fail to make "interesting" tv. And they do it under the guise of telling the models that this is like real modeling and they are preparing them for a modeling career. Such bullshit.

I used to lovvvvvvve watching ANTM! I am obsessed with photos and was always fascinated by the photoshoots. I don't recall ever rly stopping to think about the treatment of the models. Not sure why. Thank you for doing all these reactions! It's rly interesting and eye opening especially watching you react to episodes I've seen. Now that I'm seeing the show through a different perspective, it looks like it's a model torture show. This episode is awful and the episode of them in the pool where where one of the ladies gets hypothermia is awful too.

Honestly though, a good idea for this challenge would be to walk, pose in between swings, then keep walking, repeat. At least that way you get good pictures and won't get hit.

The fact that these girls were in underwear and they didn’t even show the bottom half just proves how the show is just made to humiliate them and put them in tough situations.
