    Top Half of the cap? You mean VTEC's second cam profile
    There are actually 4 variants of the S2000, essentially changing every 2 years.
    AP1.1 (00-01), AP1.2 (02-03), AP2.1 (04-05), and AP2.2 (06-07) the 08-09 cars also had little changes but are still considered AP2.2s
    1.1 cars have a (factory) plastic window, a richer tune ecu, slightly weaker synchros, and most importantly in the US 2 squirt oil jet bolts. These need to be changed to 4 hole banjo bolts to help lower oil consumption & on cars that see more time in VTEC also presently cylinder wall scoring. Some early 02s also still have the 2 hole banjo bolts so look out.
    1.2 cars are the best of the AP1s, they have the updated synchros, banjo bolts, a glassback window, some interior and suspension rates changed but 03s also have a bigger oil pump from the AP2.
    2.1 Is cable throttle of the 2.2L without VSA (traction control) and still is essentially a rawer car. These are considered the best year for a stock car as they don't have the AP1 or AP2.2 DBW issues. They do have an issue with 2nd gear popping out on 04s similar to the NSX snap rings, which isn't a fun fix if you have them.
    2.2 is the car you want for a autocross, track, or modified car. The ECU is flashable so with a High Flow Cat you can use a lower VTEC tune for a ton of midrange torque without affection high RPM power. They can also have a safe fuel cut of 8500rpm for those sections you need a bit more speed in. HOWEVER they also run lien with a returnless fuel system so they tighten their exhaust valves over time causing you to need more frequent valve adjustments.
    Hargerty, I could write a whole article if you'd like about the indepth stuff and the basics. My instagram is @130_James.Dean

I remember (as I’m sure many here do) when this car first debuted in 99 as a 2000 year model , and was always impressed with the F20C and later F22C1 engine that Honda produced for the car. Producing the highest specific power output for any naturally aspirated piston engine in a car priced under US$100,000, this engine is still one of the highest output per liter and the highest revving mass production engines ever made.

    I bought my S2000 new in 2002, Sebring Silver, and it is currently still sitting in my garage. It’s a California car, never driven in the rain, always garaged. It just turned over 8,000 miles. I know I’m crazy for not driving it more but I had too many toys and not enough time to drive it. The good thing is the car looks as good as the day I bought it, not a rock chip, door ding, nothing. As close to a new one as you can get. At this point I’m afraid to drive it as I don’t want it getting damaged. I just keep the oil changed and go for a drive once a month or so to keep it in good running condition. As much as I love the car as I get older it gets harder and harder to get in and out of it, lol. I will probably eventually sell it although I’m not looking forward to that whole process of figuring out what it’s worth, letting people test drive my car, etc.

    I had a 2001 S2000 and loved it. But I’ve never had a car that would change lanes all by it’s self going through run of from sprinklers. No matter what tires I had on the car it would hydroplane in the wet starting at any speed over 45mph. It also was murder on tires. Now good luck finding one that’s not beat to death.

      @@fastdude2002 I can’t blame you for keeping it,they are beautiful sports cars. Kind of like a Japanese Cobra. Long hood line,the cockpit way back. Great lines. With that low mileage when you do get around to selling it I’d expect you’ll get a premium price for it. Most of them still on the road will have had the crap beaten out of them. Kids don’t have any respect for nice cars.they like to take them to drifting events and pound on them. I’d keep it as long as you can still get into it,you probably feel about yours the way I felt about my BMW E 30 M-3. I kick myself for selling it,wonderful sports car.

    Mostly accurate review/ guide but coming from a guy who has owned around a dozen S2K’s new and old. Go with the AP2 with the slightly lower redline. AP2’s are classified as 2004+ Model Years. (2004-2009)

    • @VirtualGuth
      @VirtualGuth 3 года назад

      Works for me, but the AP2 cars might not a realistic choice for everyone as they cost more than the AP1 cars and the difference in prices between the two has continued to increase over the past couple of years. For buyers that find themselves torn, I'd say that it's far better to get into an AP1 car than no S2000 at all. If it ends up not working out, just sell the car later on for a profit.

    Not a bad review, but it glosses over the handling of the ap1 vs ap2. AP1 has more tendency to steer with the throttle near the limit, which was intentionally designed in. It requires skill and a delicate touch, but I love that responsiveness in my 2002.

  • @jaskamakynen7766
    @jaskamakynen7766 2 года назад

    just a question on AP1 vs AP2 handling.. I happen to have an AP1, but I'm driving with AP2 size wheels (215, 245). I haven't found the car loose at all, indeed it grips like crazy until it doesnt. I wouldn't mind LESS grip to be honest so it would be a bit more predictable.
    I wonder do you think the wheels itself is enough to make this difference in driving feel?

    I know this will get some owners in a twist but there is only ONE TRUE s2000 and that is the F20c 9k redline. The s2000 monicker derives itself from the 2.O liter engine (not that it was released in year 2000), so s2200 would be what the 2.2 liter should be named. The F20c was named the Best Naturally Aspirated Engine of All Time in Car and Driver because it is an engineering marvel. The 2.2l is a diluted s2000.

    • @Perfectionyx
      @Perfectionyx Год назад +1

      I own both the AP1 and AP2 and I love them both. The 9k rpm on the AP1 is awesome but the 8k on the AP2 is just as exciting. The steering on the AP1 is much tighter and in my opinion better but the 9 ft pound torque on the AP2 really makes a difference at low rpm. I would not say the AP2 is a "diluted" version. It's a "refined" version, which doesn't make it better or worst. If you want a more daily driver, everyday kind of car, the AP2. If you want a track (focus) car, the AP1. That being said, the AP2 is just as capable of a track car as the AP1 and the AP1 is capable of a daily driver as the AP2.

But, at just over 6 foot tall, the car is too small for me. The steering wheel is in your knees and the top of the windscreen is too low. Surprised the reviewer didn't mention any of that. The car is built for small Japanese people.
