This is what I was thinking of doing but I hadn't even thought about adding grills. I was just going to leave it open, so thanks for the tip. There's no way my 23 year old plastic trim won't shatter into a million pieces if I try to remove it.
I think this is the best way to change the rear speakers on these trucks. Less hassle. Taking the seat out and all the paneling that will end up breaking is unnecessary. Thanks for the vid👍🏽
You’re welcome. I agree. Trying to get all of that old plastic out of there without breaking it would’ve been impossible, and I didn’t really want to take the seats and everything else out either.
I Agree That for this make they could have been designed a little bit better regarding the rear speakers maybe some one can make a 3d printed removable insert or something. I wont cut my truck up to do this
HI, this was very helpful information, because I was wondering what was in there on my 1996 Silverado, I think your demo is great, and I did not know size in my wall
I think this is a really good idea if you are gonna use factory speaker wire. If you're not going to upgrade the wires then do this. If you do want to pull the panels find the best videos you can to help, even then I broke some plastic in area's where the clips really gripped in the frame and plastic gave. Overall things went back ok but its a really bad design by GM just to get to speakers. I will never take those panels off again, now that I got upgraded wire, if I ever go back in this is the way to go IMO. Good Video.
I just bought a set of 6x9s and I’m going to be cutting out the location and mounting them. It’s a truck, it’s not a show car so I literally don’t care what I do to my truck.
I’ve seen a few post on the Internet by people who have put 6 x 9’s in there, and they look pretty good. You might have to cut away a little bit of metal, but the speaker covers that come with it should fit on and look good.
I thought about that, but I think the best thing would be to use a little bit of sandpaper to sand the chrome paint off. You are right that it is ugly.
another thing, could you provide parts numbers for the speaker harness?? GM trucks use a Metra 72-4568 for the front speakers but I cant seem to find what the back pillar speakers use but i know its different
found the speaker grills you used and got the tape but now I just need information on those metal clips, i cant find those anywhere since i dont know exactly what to search for. i appreciate any and all of your help!
I bought the speakers from Crutchfield, and the wiring harness came with them. I don’t know what the model number is, but I bet they have it on the Crutchfield website. The little screws and clips were included with the kicker speakers I bought. I tried looking around for them on eBay, but I don’t know what you would have to call them to find them.
i am so happy you put this out there because i have been thinking it for awhile now and wasnt sure if i was thinking stupid but after seeing how you did it, exactly as I thought i should, and seeing your finished product I am sold and will finally invest in a new speaker setup. if only the front doors were this easy!!!
I put 6" sub speakers down below the cubby hole/armrests area behind the front seats near the floor, with a hole saw lots of room if you pull the bins out and put insulation in it too, it puts out great sound. But I might try that and have 6.
Thanks. My son wants to hide a subwoofer in there somewhere. I am wondering if we could convert part of the center console box into a subwoofer while still leaving room to store things in it.
hoohoohoblin I've seen people relocate the jackstand behind the passenger seat and place a low-profile sub in its place. Also you can unbolt the center console from the floor without much difficulty.
Thanks for the idea I’ll do those and put a 6x9 don’t want the hassle of removing everything and breaking stuff even professionals would break clips I bet hahaha🤙🏽
I bought them from Crutchfield. They are Kickers. I bought a radio and a 1.5 din adapter but haven’t installed it yet. The stock radio CD player sounds fine to me but my son wants something louder with Bluetooth. We bought a Sony MEX-XB100BT, which has a lot more power than most car stereos, so we won’t need to buy an amp. We will do an installation video soon.
hoohoohoblin Thanks for the information I'll look into it. Nice with the CD player I've seen people solder a aux connection to the circuit board. Looking forward to your next video.
I bought the insulated tape on eBay, for the bottom of my truck where the floor gets hot above the catalytic converter. I think it’s just generic sticky foil heat insulation tape in 8 x12 sheets. I bet there is a product that is better, designed for acoustics. I also bought the speaker grated on eBay, and there are a few different sellers who sell the same thing. Just do a search for 5 x 7 speaker grate and you will find it. I wish there were more attractive options, but 5 x 7 is a strange size.
I don’t know if they would be the same size or not. I have seen pictures of people on the Internet in truck forums who have put 6 x 9’s back there, so you could probably make them fit. A good way to find out what the standard speaker sizes would be to go to the Crutchfield website and enter the year and model of your truck, and they will tell you what size speakers fit into it.
I found it on eBay. I don’t remember who the seller was, but there are a lot of people selling different sizes and shapes of speaker grills. This one is a weird size though.
I thought about buying some metal mesh from Home Depot and using 2 sided tape to install it. I decided the plastic grills look better and would be less dangerous in an accident.
Brilliant. My 98 C2500 with 415k miles will likely see the junk yard before it sees another owner. I believe I will install my new rear speakers exactly how you’ve shown here. Thanks for the video!
@@hoohoohoblin I can understand the cringe. I would almost always be against this type of install, but for my particular circumstances, this will do the trick.
I go through those stupid 4x6 speakers every 2 or so yrs, no fkn way i am tearing all this plastic crap off, risking breakage and burning an afternoon up when i could just pull both speakers out, install the news one all in 30mins now..plus i thing my matching blue interior fabric covered fab system actually looks better than the factory speaker slots..
hoohoohoblin for future vehicles I would recommend Crutchfield. They sent me instructions and great mounting brackets. I was able to get all my speakers installed in under an hour. Hope your system is lasting though, because the factory speakers in these trucks is TERRIBLE
I like it , may be if you want to keep your truck looking original you would do it by removing everything and spending more time , but to save time and trouble this is a very easy and quick way to do it.
F that shit! I did the same thing as this guy almost 10yrs ago and put matching blue interior fabric to cover it back up with a nice border around the fabric edges..i think it actual blows away the factory look !
You’re right. People have done videos showing how to do that, but there is a lot of plastic, and a lot of things that you can break when you do this, so I wanted to show people a different way, if they wanted to have better sound, but were not comfortable taking all of the interior plastics apart. My method works, and it still holds together great. I think I picked the ugliest possible speaker covers though. You could probably find some that look pretty good.
This is what I was thinking of doing but I hadn't even thought about adding grills. I was just going to leave it open, so thanks for the tip. There's no way my 23 year old plastic trim won't shatter into a million pieces if I try to remove it.
My thoughts exactly, I'm trying to replace these and no auto-speaker installation store wants to do it 😆

Yeah... I'm not gonna butcher my truck 😬. I'll set a whole day aside and do it patiently and correctly 😎
The problem with that is the very good possibility that all the clips are gonna break. I did 6x9 in place of them.
@@askmeifIcareify yeah most certainly all the clips are old and brittle 😬

You can use a dremal but the cutting wheel has to be a metal one. Works great

Thanks. This video gets a lot of hate, but I knew it would be a disaster if I tried to take all those panels off. I’m happy with the solution as well.
I saw that and was surprised. I will be doing this if I ever change the speaker. just find a nice cover and call it good.

I found it on eBay, I had to really look around a lot to find some thing that I thought would fit. I looked up the term speaker covers.
Where did u run speaker wires from to get them to the back??
Y’all Som3 big babies this man did wonderful so what he cut that ugly old plastic he covered it with a speaker gate it looks good!
can you sharpy the chrome lines on the speaker grill because it looks ugly?

The regular cab is probably gonna have different rear ones. The speakers in the video were 4x6, and we're for an ext. Cab
I would personally get 4x6 speaker grill cut hole to snug the grill and make it flush
That would actually look nice
I just cut out the old ones and surface mounted 6x9 with the grill faces that came with the speaker using nothing more than a dremel
I did the exact same thing cut right threw it to get to them
