    Soaking the stud with penetrating oil helps as well after welding. And keep the heat down as well or you'll be through the stud.

    Another trick for those with no welder, take nut off the stud, slide the closed in of the wrench on, then use two nuts tightened against each other and back it out.

      Thats that I thought he was going to do, saw Doc Harley do it but with the bottom engine studs.

      What if the nuts are still training in place once the nuts are "locked"

    Interesting! I'd stuff a rag in the exhaust port, those sparks are tiny pieces of metal that you don't want in de cylinder.

      Good point, I did rebuild the top end after this, but yeah next time or for anyone who does this, plug them ports! Thanks Patrick! 👊🏻

    1:35 at this point I generally keep a little heat on the block by way of a propane torch as the aluminium cools more quickly and grabs the bolt that has thermally expanded or naturally rusted.

    Good idea, I'll probably be giving it a go in a few days

    All you do is put 2 nuts on and use one to lock the other from turning then put a wrench on it. Use penetrating oil if it feels super tight where it may break. And let it soak in over night. I’ll post a video in the morning called “simple easy Harley exhaust stud removal. Old skool way”

    Could of just used two nuts and would of been able to take it off with welding

    How about double-nut instead of welding it?

    • @HouseMadeUS

      @@HouseMadeUS Thanks for the reply. I let it soak for couple of days with penetration oil. I'm ready to try double-nut method tomorrow. If it's success, I will upload the video in my channel and update you on it. Thank you!

    Do you think there is any way of repairing a stud if it has been stripped to some degree? I accidentally put the wrong nut on when replacing the exhaust so I double nutted the stud in the hopes I could get it close to torque specs without having to remove the stud. It’s the rear stud on the front port and a pain to get to on a limited. I think it may be the cause of vibration in the foot boards now. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

      You could try a due and rethread it?

    Am I just just stupid? Why are these studs needed? I just broke one last week on my 1700. Why can't I just use a stainless Allen bolt?

    • @HouseMadeUS
      @HouseMadeUS  5 лет назад

      You could as long as you get the exact size you need as to not bottom out the bolt and also hug up the exhaust right. I think they do it this way so it takes the guess work out of it.

    Dude! Plug up that exhaust port before you weld to keep weld splatter out of your cylinder!

    • @KnuckleBuster
      @KnuckleBuster 3 месяца назад

      Uhhhh there is no direct way for weld splatter to get in to the cylinder via the exhaust port unless the valve is actually open

  • @rodmitchell8064

    Why not just use commercially available stud remover ?

    • @HouseMadeUS
      @HouseMadeUS  3 года назад +1

      This was free and worked perfectly. Using what you have instead of buying something you might use only once is a better option.

    • @aaronbell1596
      @aaronbell1596 2 года назад +1

      just put 2 nuts together and turn the bottom one to break it loose, much better than heat cycling a bolt by welding it to get it off
