  • Green skies and non-stop cloud-to-ground lightning accompanied an intensely severe tornado-warned thunderstorm in Amsterdam, NY on May 29th, 2013. Widespread wind damage was reported with this storm, along with a funnel cloud in Rotterdam, not far from this location. The lightning action starts after 5:00. A very frequent lightning rate tends to be indicative of a tornadic storm around this region.
UPDATE: The National Weather Service in Albany confirmed that a mile-wide EF-2 tornado with 125 mph winds touched down just south of where this video was taken.

That was amazingly insane! Kudos to you when those lightning strikes were so close for standing strong. I only noticed you flinch twice during the thunder barrages. LOL Thank you for sharing.

I remember this one thunderstorm from a few years back, maybe two or three years ago when it produced an unexpected tornado. As we are living in Wisconsin, we don't live in a place that gets a lot of tornadoes, but we did that year. I remember sitting outside of this sudden enormous thunderstorm that started to have frequent lightning. At first I thought nothing of it, since most of our severe thunderstorms have frequent lightning in them. I went inside the house as soon as I started to notice that the lightning was getting a bit too mean looking. I had been listening to the radio when they started throwing out severe thunderstorm warnings out, and my dad came home. Not a minute after he took his shoes off and laid on the bed were we at the gas station outrunning the tornado soon after the sirens went off.
We later found out that a small tornado had struck only two blocks from our trailer. Nine tornadoes were seen from that storm.

Great audio! I believe that's just as important as the visual elements in a video. Being totally blind all my life, I'm an audio junky, and I really appreciate it whenever people have excellent recording equipment. I know it's not always possible, so it's ear candy when I get to hear videos like this one. Great capture!

Living in the tornado alley region of Texas, I sometimes undermine how impressive storm videos from other parts of the country. We haven't had one of this caliber in a few years. I love it! The way those staccato lightning strikes increase near tornado time (and often subside entirely once the tornado matures). Excellent!

Thank you for this wonderful thunderstorm from nearly 5 years ago. I grew up in Schenectady, but then moved to Utah. We hardly get thunderstorms, let alone a great thunder maker like this one.I have to rely on RUclips and terrific people like yourself to see and hear the good storms that remind me of my childhood. Again, thank you.

I dealt with a simiar storm in Bristol, Vermont back in August 2013. A strong storm had formed on the New York side and right before it got into Vermont, a hook was dectected and there was a torando warning just as it was crossing the state line. There was a lot of thunder and lightning. And never in my life had I heard so much thunder in just one storm! Check out the 2 videos I had posted on my page about it. They are called Constant thunder. Bristol, Vermont 8/8/2013 and Close lightning Bristol, Vermont 8/8/2013

I remember, a few years ago, we had an intense thunderstorm here in eastern Pennsylvania. I worked in a department store at the time and I was standing outside (under a roof) because the AC in the store was not working that well. All of a sudden, a bolt of lightning struck about 200 feet from where I was standing. It hit a tree in the parking lot that fell and crushed two unoccupied vehicles. Thank God nobody was hurt but, had that lightning bolt struck a bit closer to where I was, I most likely would not be here to write this today. Lightning may be fascinating, but it is also extremely dangerous.

It's actually the blast of the thunder that kills most lightning strike victims. It reaches 712;7 decibels and destroys the cortices of their brains. Sorry, Grandma. Thunder does hurt people and sometimes kills them.

@@rss7329 I don't doubt it, there are probably pockets of the SW that aren't stormy or at least not a lot. But I follow storm reports page on SPC, sometimes large hail and occasionally tornadoes do get reported in the four corner states. Phoenix and Tucson at least once a year get flooded out too. There is a monsoon "season" down in that area according to many people.
