Hello everyone, My apologies for the lack of activity on this channel. I am currently finishing my graduate degree in meteorology, where my research is on the physics of the lower part of the hurricane eyewall. In particular, I have been studying small-scale "waves" that appear in some powerful storms including Dorian, which may help explain why or how some hurricanes intensify rapidly or reach such extreme wind speeds. Unfortunately, the workload in addition to some health issues meant that I have not been able to chase very often and provide more videos. I am very thankful for everyone who subscribed, but I wanted to mention that you should not expect regular uploads from me. I don't really consider myself a content creator so it would be difficult physically and emotionally to follow the weather media model currently popular in the community. How often I chase after I graduate will depend on what and where my new research position is, and those details are just too uncertain at this point. September 1, 2024 will mark the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Dorian's landfall in Abaco, and I may take that day to upload a new version of this video without a watermark (or at least a much less intrusive one) and maybe some more commentary. This video has basically all of the footage that I took, however, so there wouldn't be any new clips of the actual storm. I am thankful for all of the moving comments on this video sharing in the sheer power of nature, and I don't think it will be possible to keep them, so I'm not sure what I will do yet. I would also like to visit Abaco again and hopefully reconnect with people I met during Dorian and see how the island is doing. Wishing peace and safety to all in this New Year. -JY
After Andrew, I started subscribing to the idea that cyclones undergoing rapid intensification at the time of landfall translated more violence to the surface than would otherwise be expected, not to include its carousel mesovortices in the second half. Ian sort of disproved that. Even though it was almost immediately recategorized as a 5, I simply don't believe it. Even 155 was a stretch. But the violence you captured in this video is appalling. It's like there's a fourth wall where mature annular cyclones nearing the speed limit of the atmosphere *sink* like a bowl to say "hello" with their absolute worst. Best wishes and cheers to your health!

8:50, 9:13, 9:42, 10:40 & also 11:41 is just so insane. Mind blowing. How the strongest of the gusts come and go. It can go from 0-100 in mere seconds. 😮 spectacular yet terrifying.
You captured 180+ MPH Gust 💨 on film. Only a few have lived to tell the story. I’m grateful for this footage, you put us literally inside the worst part of this Hurricane. God bless
This is by far the best hurricane footage I have ever seen. And I deeply appreciate your compassion and consideration of the people who lived through it and now have to rebuild. Well Done Sir.

Reed Timmer is right. In my opinion this has to be the best hurricane footage/mini-documentary ever made. Big ups to the photographer for battling conditions that dangerous to shoot this film with a steady hand. And the fact that you let the images and the original sound speak for themselves with no attempts to add dramatizing music and that sorts is a big, big plus. Best wishes from a Danish weather enthusiast.
I was shocked and got impatient so I fast forwarded a bit.. my jaw hit the floor. I had no idea it could get worse. I am stunned. I cannot imagine the PTSD you'd get living through this. My heart goes out to all of those that survived this. You're so brave and so much stronger than you realize
My cousin was home alone with her pets. She felt like the whole house was about to lift off and suddenly got the urge to grab the animals and run to the bathroom. At that moment the whole roof lifted off the house and even heavy objects were found strewn far from the house after so they all would’ve likely been killed if she hadn’t moved at that moment.
This was my home, I'm a survivor of this monster storm. I was a few minutes drive away fighting to avoid my collapsing house. Watching this does not compare to being in it trust me!
I'm on the beach in Florida and I can't imagine that terror. I hope you're doing well... damn this video made me terrified and I've never even been in a 5.
These tremendous gusts have been trigered by this scary pressure gradient Dorian had, without a doubt. This video is truly unique, a documentation without yelling, shaking camera or fast cuts using. The winds are easily the strongest ever recorded outside of a tornado. You can see the intensification steps at 8:50, 10:21 and 12:50, the two 220 mph gusts at 11:41 and 14:35. To bad there was no possibilty to film the second eyewall, but thank you for sharing this with us!
This is by far the best footage of Dorian, and also just about the most amazing hurricane footage ever. Just as much a contribution to science as it is to journalism. I can't imagine what it's like to live through something like this.
@@Rangerandjetfan yes Dorian was worse and lasted much longet. Both were 5's. Dorian was more intense and with a slower forward speed, it unleashed its fury for much longer. But Andrew still was as serious as you would ever want to deal with
@@gregorydiggs9227 what made Andrew scary was the fact it was at night time…..if Dorian happened at night time it would of been at least 5 times more scarier for sure
This is great footage. My relatives kept saying I didn’t understand what they lived through in Dorian. Seeing this they are right. Counting my blessings
You were in very extreme danger recording this, especially 12:00 pm. I have seen the eye wall of 4 major hurricanes and I can say I hope we never have to endure a full blown cat 5 like this one. You, Sir are very brave and have giant balls standing outside of that stairwell.

@@pbainsadventure8566 thank u for the corrections. I was shaking thinking about it. Still have not recovered from this storm. We lost everything. Including family, friends and neighbors.
Agreed... I was incredibly fortunate with the geography and wind direction that mitigated the surge. Other parts of the island, even just a few km away, were not so lucky. We took in many refugees in the eye, some of whom said they had to swim for their lives when their houses were destroyed or water rose too high.
Those winds are insane, can't even see past the trees because it's a white out from all the rain and wind. Those palm trees are boss level, watching them hold out, just wow. Also that palm tree that breaks after part of the roof slams into it, that thing was like the calm in the storm, just stood there, motionless at times.
I have a friend who says that they would like to see a really intense hurricane hit. I showed them this video and they changed their mind on the spot. Thank you for your courage to take this video in a real nasty hurricane.
This is the most intense Hurricane footage on the internet, this is better than any of the footage captured during Haiyan or any other hurricane, only one I can think of that comes close are the Mexico Beach Hurricane Michael videos. I can’t even imagine what Haiyan, Patricia, and Tip looked like at their worst if this is anything to go off of. Most chasers at the hurricanes peak turn the cameras off and take shelter, but you were at an angle where you could keep filming the worst of it. Great job man, you’ve recorded the most insane hurricane footage on the internet (so far)..
You should see this. Typhoon Goni (First view videos on the compilation were shot near or at the first landfall area where Goni broke the record of Haiyan's Landfall) m.ruclips.net/video/znFhQ0LXfmY/видео.html Though caught by amateur videos i think the winds were equally violent as dorian.
@@anemojin4384 Oh yeah, I totally forgot about Goni! Yeah those videos are pretty intense too, but I still don’t think it’s as impressive as the ones captured here (even tho Goni was stronger ofc). The first two videos are definitely the most impressive, but it also seems more like there were just very intense white out conditions captured during the inner eyewall, rather than the people filming managing to catch the worst of it. (Cause again, most people take shelter during the worst part of a Cyclones landfall, this Dorian video was just a circumstance of the guy filming being extremely lucky at the angle he was at).
@@cognitiveinterlace715 that i will have to agree on, had there been no pandemic and travel ban wasn't implemented at those times then maybe some storm chasers would be able to film the worst of the storm.
This is probably also very similar to the conditions observed during the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane that completely decimated Islamorada, Marathon, and Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad.
Brutal. I can't believe he stood there and filmed through this. Wow. I've lived in Florida all my life and I fear this, because we are now a population that CANNOT evacuate due to HUGE overpopulation and these newcomers have NO idea what they are doing here. I have spoken to a few who don't believe they are vulnerable and don't worry about the consequences. Thanks for showing everyone what hurricane hell looks like.
The fact that this thing was only a hundred or so miles west of florida is insane. You guys are so lucky that this storm turned north, too bad it didn’t do so before it hit the bahamas
Oh no I plan on moving there eventually I will be out of there if something like this were to ever happen. I'll leave the filming up to someone else also.

This is epic! It's loud, and it's supposed to be, and the audio quality is impressive! For someone who's been blind all my life, I really try to get a picture in my mind of how horrifying this is, because I've been through two tornadoes and three hurricanes. It's true, too, that no matter how many storms you've been through, not one is the same as another, and it's always traumatic. Thank you for uploading such a great video. I really appreciate the length, too, because it makes it that much more real!
This video show what a Cat-5 hurricane is capable of and will evacuate when another one comes. For the person who filmed this, so happy you are safe and thanks for doing this.
This is absolutely incredible. Probably the strongest TC winds captured on video to date, equivalent to a EF-4/5 tornado sustained. Can't imagine what it was like for those affected, and I hope their recovery is going well.
The wind inside of an EF4 and EF5 tornado are more powerful than this, partly because of updraft and the cylic nature of the wind. Way more intense and damaging then 140 mph sustained winds. There have been EF5 tornados that have ripped fire hydrants out of the ground, torn, gas pipelines out of the ground, and thrown 20,000 lb water/oil tanks a quarter mile.
@@johnf817 Dorian made landfall with ~180mph sustained wind. Wind is funky because's the forces applied to objects are quadratic not liner. For every doubling of windspeed, *wind force increase by a factor of 4x*. So 180mph winds would exert ~60% more force on an objects than 140mph winds.
This reminds me of sweet childhood memories growing up in the Caribbean. We were very poor and we lived in the smallest tin-roofed house on our street. But I had a happy home because I was loved. This is the most natural rain-on-tin-roof video that I've ever heard. Have a good night's rest to everyone. Love, joy and peace to everyone who reads this. 😊😴⛈❤❤❤
Omg, not many people understand exactly how strong these winds are. This is truly the strongest I have ever seen recorded. God bless you for living through this.
I thought the footage from iCyclone (Josh Morgerman) was intense, and it was. This is next level intense, absolutely ball tearing, off the chain, psycho level madness. The fact this system stalled for so long and prolonged the agony for many is just heartbreaking, but I have to praise you for your compassion and consideration in your choices made, to not film people directly, and understanding that some things just don't need a camera shoved into them. Well done and you have a new fan subscriber, who looks forward to seeing more of your work and exploring your channel.
The winds are so surreal it looks like it was fast forwarded all along. The gusts are so violent that each resembles a mini tornado. What a visceral footage that's deserving to be put in the National Archives.
Just when you think it won't get any worse...and it does 😳 Amazing how you shot this whole thing without freaking out! You're one brave person that's for sure. Glad you made it thru this horrific storm 👌🏼
More like a newfound respect for cat 5 to 6 hurricanes period.. When Ida just hit the gulf coast around Grand ile. it was pretty intense too,., I never knew eye walls of cat 5's was so dramatic.. Ive been in 130 but thats it, and it wasn't even the eye wall, just otter bands, the eye of Ike hit Bolivar Peninsula, with the surge and eye wall it just whipped it out...I think it was around 140 or 150, shit this was 185 to 200 here in this storm,, smh... who would wanna stick around for that crap, ,oh right the crazy storm chasers.. I think they do it more for the thrill, and not so much for the sake of onlookers
I’m as flabbergasted as everyone else seems to be. Those peak wind speeds is just utterly insane. Top work filming this though! I never have seen anything this crazy, and I’ve watched a lot of videos, especially ones that Josh Morgerman has captured.
Josh is a legit hurricane hunter, but he chickens out when it comes to filming these kind of winds. He would likely been covered by pillows and blankets in a basement by this time
@@andreiwindstorm There’s a difference between “chickening out” and not being a fucking idiot you know that right? This guy in the video didn’t even have a choice because he was trapped up in the balcony. Try putting yourself in a cat5 and you’ll be wetting yourself in no time.
wow....simply mesmerizing. I'm impressed with your stamina. I was in Puerto Rico when Dorian passed by us then hit The Bahamas. We were spared but damn you got hit hard! I love to watch just as much as you love to record. Thank you for posting this incredible footage.
Props for actually putting a disclaimer and being respectful of the victims. "SO COOL BRO HOLY SHIT BRO LOOK THAT HOUSE IS JUST GONE *giggles* BRO LOOK." @@riverdelta7052 Yeah, like there's one video, I think from Joplin or Moore, I don't remember, where the storm chasers take shelter in a gas station cooler that literally collapses around them, everyone survives but just barely, people are crying and screaming, telling total strangers "I love you!" and shit, it really shows the human side of things. And like I said, nervous laughter is a thing, and I get that, like, I'm the kind of person who will probably be cracking jokes on my death bed. But some of the younger "RUclipsr" storm-chasers are unbelievably disrespectful. This is the single greatest first person footage of a hurricane ever recorded in my opinion. I would wager to bet that if they actually looked into it. This set records for fastest non-tornado wind speed recorded by video. Probably a host of others. The bravery it takes to literally stand there for hours and film the equivalent of a f3-f4 tornado, makes me in awe.
Amazing footage . Not to downplay the video but this hotel is on the southern side of Marsh Harbour , on the south side of a hill , the north winds hit the north side even harder , pushing waves across the island , thats why locals just 1/2 mile away were not able to record it . When the eye passed just a little north the winds shifted south west and still not directly onto this shoreline. Towards the end of the video you can see what us locals had to deal with afterwards , after all local law enforcement was evacuated. Foreign news crews choosing not to video the looting was a mistake in my opinion. Show the truth to force governments to deal with it . No doubt one of the best Hurricane videos ever
Wow !!! I don’t even know what to say to that. That wind was insane. That’s like an F5 tornado that goes on for hours and hours. Great footage. That must have been amazing to watch. Glad your safe. Thank you for the footage.
Well not quite. An EF5 tornado would rip the trees from the ground, level the house, and possibly tear the foundation out of the ground. This is like a lower range EF4. Still incredibly powerful and destructive, and for hours at a time as well, but not EF5.

My Soul-mate reminded me that flooding is inevitable on any tropical island being that he's my better half who keeps me from myself/foolishness. Therefore, he and I can take seasonal trips, if he's game...
This is some of the most incredible footage I've ever seen, of any weather event! Those winds were of incredible violence, I've never seen footage like that. An excellent intercept and incredible footage from a terrible event.
My dad aged 15 in the royal navy was in a hurricane near Iceland in 1960. He said it was the only time the captain gave the crew lifejackets as they didn't think they would make it. The captain decided to stay in the eye of the storm and follow it to Iceland. The ship was in drydock to be repaired as the bow was completely damaged by the waves. My dad stayed in Iceland for a few weeks until another ship picked him up. I can't imagine what a hurricane would be like at sea but as a 15 year old it must have be terrifying.
There are different categories of hurricane force winds. I believe category 1 to 5. Iceland definitely has had many different wind strengths such as 160mph and 122mph. I take your point that it may not be classed as a hurricane by definition as it has moved from the tropics to the cold Atlantic, but these hurricanes still posses hurricane force winds, so can be a violent storm class 11 on the Beaufort scale. I can only speak for what my dad told me.
That's extraordinary, I've never seen anything like that and I've seen alot of footage. The violence of this storm was akin to a gigantic EF4- EF5 tornado sitting stationery right over you. Those palm trees are being blown around like blades of grass. Truly astonishing and terrifying 👍
These hurricanes and tornadoes are a lot more comparable than we previously realized, I think. It used to be taught that hurricane wind speeds "topped out" somewhere above 150mph, but tornadoes had wind speeds of 300mph. Now, if we compare the worst tornadoes to the worst hurricanes there may be some element of truth to the claim that tornadoes have higher wind speeds, but my understanding is that part of the reason for replacing the Fujita scale with the Enhanced Fujita scale was that structural engineers pointed out that the tornado damage that meteorologists had previously thought to be indicative of 300-mph winds could in fact be caused by winds of "only" 150 to 200 mph. tl;dr your EF-4 estimate was literally spot-on: Hurricane Dorian's sustained wind speed of 185 mph (according to Google) is equivalent to a mid-range EF-4 tornado, and the only differences were that Dorian was much larger and longer-lasting, and caused a storm surge.
@@philipmcniel4908 You're 1000% right that they've downgraded the windspeeds needed for different categories of tornado (EF0-EF5), but I think they're still very different from Hurricanes in terms of damage. Firstly, rotating and up-drafting tornadic winds produce much more structural damage than straight line winds of the same speed - that's why the cameraman here can stand on a sheltered balcony in 186mph hurricane winds, while tornadoes at that same wind speed will destroy brick homes. Secondly, you wouldn't know it from the EF scale, but there are big differences between low-end and high-end EF5 tornadoes. The EF Tornado scale is based on the damage a tornado does, and it estimates the wind speed ranges scientists believe must have caused this damage. The highest rating (EF5) is defined as "well-built houses completely destroyed and swept clean from their foundation," and the wind speed attached to this is "200mph or greater." There's no EF category for tornadoes 250+ mph or 300+ mph because there's no reliable way to measure damage greater than what is basically total destruction. But we know that tornadoes can get that fast! There are at least 2 on record with radar-measured wind speeds above 300 mph (Moore 1999 and El Reno 2013). At those speeds, we see things like train cars thrown hundreds of yards and plumbing pipes ripped out of the earth, and we never see that kind of phenomenal damage with hurricanes. This article (published after the massive 2011 tornado outbreak) explains the differences pretty well: miami.cbslocal.com/2011/04/28/hurricanes-no-comparison-to-tornadoes/

So sorry to hear of your losses. I can’t even imagine this, though this video made it pretty real I’ve been in and seen hurricanes, but nothing remotely like this. It does push me to put structural reinforcement and storm shutters higher on my “to do” list, but against a storm like you had, a frame house has practically no chance. This is a real wake up for people to evacuate if they are able. Lives are more important than property.
Deebo d Davis I guess I should not be surprised. I don’t know about your islands, but in the states the shelters would be schools or public buildings. Maybe sturdy, but against THIS? Not much could withstand it. Really unbelievable.

Thank you brave soul for risking your life filming this!! What's really sad was when you mentioned about the looting and violence after this disaster. It's bad enough people suffering this but, being looted/physically harmed after such trauma is the lowest of the low - Shame on those who took advantage of people at their most vunerable.
I went through Hurricane Charley in Punta Gorda Florida in 2004, it was a small intense fast moving storm with winds in the 150+mph sustained range but the whole thing was over in about three hours. The thing I don’t hear people talk much about but has really stuck with me was that I could quite literally feel the walls of the house I was in “breathe” as the building contorted from the intense wind speeds, it’s something that I hope to never experience again. I hope as we go into peak hurricane season this year all who are in the paths of these storms will stay safe.

This is absolutely incredible. Probably the strongest TC winds captured on video to date, equivalent to a EF-4/5 tornado sustained. Can't imagine what it was like for those affected, and I hope their recovery is going well.
You dont want to imagine
I’ve been in an EF3 around 2 and a half months ago (wind speed of tornado: ~140 mph/225 kmh)

There are no hurricanes near Iceland
@@hcassells66near iceland
There are different categories of hurricane force winds. I believe category 1 to 5. Iceland definitely has had many different wind strengths such as 160mph and 122mph. I take your point that it may not be classed as a hurricane by definition as it has moved from the tropics to the cold Atlantic, but these hurricanes still posses hurricane force winds, so can be a violent storm class 11 on the Beaufort scale. I can only speak for what my dad told me.
i thought the previous video was crazy...some of the best footage ive seen. but this reupload is downright frightening...left me speechless.
@@philipmcniel4908 with gust to 225 that's f5

These winds are like only one other thing I've ever seen: Brandon Ivey's footage of the inside of an EF-4 (albeit possibly EF-3 at the time of the footage) tornado.
Actually, there's one difference here: Unlike a tornado, these winds didn't let up after a few minutes. People say 5 minutes of that tornado footage must've felt like an eternity, but imagine what 30 minutes or even 4 hours must have felt like!
😔I lost families and friends in this storm. I was in the midst of this. It sat on our island for two days without moving. The water reach the roof of houses. Neighbors drowned in there roof. I lost everything in this storm. We still ain't recover from this storm an covid made it even harder to do so. Watching this video made me cry and bring back so much fear. I have been in some hurricanes but this was a monster. Wat u watching is a joke now.
@@dougkelley2781 even shelters was not safe. They had to evacuate them also. This was a monster
Deebo d Davis I guess I should not be surprised. I don’t know about your islands, but in the states the shelters would be schools or public buildings. Maybe sturdy, but against THIS? Not much could withstand it. Really unbelievable.
I didn't think it would get worse as the footage played-out, but it did! I was expecting it to calm down over time but it just worsened - wow. Thank you brave soul for risking your life filming this!! What's really sad was when you mentioned about the looting and violence after this disaster. It's bad enough people suffering this but, being looted/physically harmed after such trauma is the lowest of the low - Shame on those who took advantage of people at their most vunerable.
Quite possibly the most jarring hurricane footage I've seen, thank you for sharing
Those gust were over 200+mph insane.
I was thinking the same thing! I figure the gust around the 5:00 mark had to be 200+.
@@casualcruiser6319 12:37- maybe even stronger
Dorian's maximum gusts are 225 mph, and sustained winds are 185 mph
Check out 15:36
The only wind gust at 200mph
@@casualcruiser6319 5:00 was maybe 160mph. Check out 15:36. That was truly 200mph
Great CAT5 video footage. One of the best I have ever seen. Glad you survived brother. You are a brave soul.
Cat7
@@liannannette359nope cat5 do your research before commenting like a prick
I lived thru it. I know what the actual winds were...... prick
@@liannannette359 Really? Glad you survived.
I genuinely want to experience this firsthand
It feels like this storm lasted forever. The way the Palm trees were bending and swerving looked unreal 😱. Fantastic footage 🌀, Great video 👍👍
Those trees went from chillin, to dancin, to head banging, to moshin.
Greatest coverage of a hurricane I've ever seen whoever filmed this is truly a bad ass!
Is no one going to talk about how INCREDIBLY strong those palm trees are for withstanding that amount of force !?
I went through Hurricane Charley in Punta Gorda Florida in 2004, it was a small intense fast moving storm with winds in the 150+mph sustained range but the whole thing was over in about three hours. The thing I don’t hear people talk much about but has really stuck with me was that I could quite literally feel the walls of the house I was in “breathe” as the building contorted from the intense wind speeds, it’s something that I hope to never experience again. I hope as we go into peak hurricane season this year all who are in the paths of these storms will stay safe.
Omg that wind is so powerful
Amazing! So brave! Glad you made it through. I am a Florida native and been through a lot of hurricanes. Fascinating. Never seen or been through anything quite like that. I hope I never do! 😳 bless you 🙏🏼
What a awesome video you have here that would have had me worried for my life thank goodness you made it through something so horrific as this the best I have ever seen
I hope all is well with you Jimmy. Your Dorian video is still getting hits. Powerful storm and a Powerful video.
Shout out to all the palm trees that made it though 🙏🏽 🌴
I feel bad for the one that got decapitated by the roof debris.
That's the good thing about them. It can withstand strong winds. Would of been another one and all of them would have been down.
@@JP-wh4fb Exactly! I live in Florida and for our palm trees to get uprooted you better believe that was one hell of a hurricane. After those type of hurricanes it looks like your whole block got bombs dropped onto them.
Palm trees are very very durable
Palm Trees don't give a shit. They're like "bring it bro!".
That plywood had me nervous
All those nails...
Wow that's intense. It is incredible how strong those palm trees are. They didn't break. But the wind was terrifying 🤒
My uncle lives on Abaco; for some reason he decided to stay for Dorian. I have the Weather Channel on, saying NFW, as the forward speed drops from 5 to 1 to "stationary" for an entire day. Found out Mr. uncle came to his senses just before it was too late, going to a neighbor's storm shelter. His expensive house was destroyed.
This video is testament to the resilience of the mighty palm...until flying metal undoes nature Hector the palm 🌴 of St. Bart's (Irma), may your memory live on!
Unbeleivable. This man is lucky and probably was hanging on for dear life - Yet managed to film the storm's fury - Awesome work.
An EF-5 tornado has winds like this - Just not 25+ miles wide and lasting so long.
This was EF-4 EF-5 is much more catastrophic
Do u know how wide 25 miles is? The largest nado was 2.6 miles brotha
I'm sure this footage is going to be incredibly helpful for a lot of safety measures going forward. Thank you for sharing. ✌️
My jaw's dropped *beneath* the floor. Thank you for capturing this. I hope people are doing better now...
Holy cusswords. It had to be absolutely terrifying to be trapped outside during a storm of Dorian's magnitude.
You did a beautiful job editing, explaining, and exercising respect.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. God be with the survivors of natural disasters like this and the PTSD that inevitably follows. ❤
Irma 2017 185mph 😭😭😭😭😭 Sint Maarten I experience this too. The sounds of Dorian are exactly what I experienced and heard. I’m dumbfounded by this video. You managed to capture this. I’m guessing this is the eye wall cause it’s exactly what I experienced 😢
