Yep. Best not to take chances when you're not positive if it's the funnel or not. Also I get what you mean about the sky looking calm at first, but there's definitely some of that telltale green color when a tornado is close by
Agree. Every pretentious newscast/youtube expert these days thinks we need information spoon fed to us, when showing raw footage is always the most significantly informing.
Uhhh pretty sure this person wasn’t standing there to give commentary. I’m so glad people are more worried about clean footage instead of the people in the home and the home that was just destroyed.
This is maybe the best Tornado footage I've ever seen. A clear Meso strike right on camera. You can see the small Mesovortex(small tornado inside of a larger overall rotation) come into view, from the left side of the screen, heading right for the house, at 1:25 Replay it a few times and you can see it clearly. It passes just to the right of the big tree in the far left of the frame, and to the left of the smaller trees. It comes through the yard to the left of the driveway, and hits the house with an immediate audible crash. You can clearly see it. It hits the left side of the house and you can hear the glass breaking and debris moving on the left side of the camera. They are very dangerous. Often smaller than the size of one house(this one looks like its MAYBE 10 feet wide at the ground), but can have 200+ mph winds in them. I've seen some houses with a strip torn out of them, right down the middle of the house, because a Mesovortex came through there that was only a few feet wide on the ground, but with insanely powerful wind. Its like a buzzsaw.
Now I know what a mesovortex is. I didn't see the wind/debris at the time stamp until you pointed it out to me; when I first heard the crash, I thought that was just debris. The fact that was a buzzsaw tornado ripping through a house using wind force is terrifying.
Sirens a full 3 minutes after the direct strike. 😬 Glad you saw what was coming and got to shelter. I think it was a small mesovortex within the larger circulation that took out your windows. An amazing shot from a still camera. Glad you all are okay!
@@rileyxbell We got hit by a small EF2 last spring, and it hit before the sirens went off. It showed up on radar at the last second and it even hit us before the NWS was able to issue an actually warning. And then was over in a matter of seconds.
You would be correct. That was a smaller vorticity that spun up on the outer wall of the main tornado. Forward motion was 70+mph, with estimated velocity inside that vortex being 180mph at the very least. One parcel(piece of debris) travelled one rotation in roughly one second which gives me the estimated wind speed.
Totally agree. The steady roar is the main circulation above, really. But at 1:25 you can see the very small Mesovortex coming straight for the house, from the left side of the screen. They are very dangerous. Often smaller than the size of one house, but can have 200+ mph winds in them. I've seen some houses with a strip torn out of them, right down the middle of the house, because a Mesovortex came through there that was only a few feet wide on the ground, but with insanely powerful wind. I think my feelings would have been exactly like the woman in the video: "Oh shit." Followed by several, more colorful expletives. I hope everything has gotten back to normal and she's having a much better day.
There was obviously damage to the house - the noise of the breaking glass makes that clear - but fortunately for the owners, this was actually a very low-end storm in intensity. The trees all remained intact and undamaged and the truck wasn’t moved.

And thank you so much for NOT standing around to film this yourself. Just as a viewer this was way too real for me. I wish you all the best.
There wasn't a house there to begin with. It was street lights and a cluster of trees mixed with a reflection from inside this house behind the camera...

This is the best video iv'e ever seen demonstrating the train like noise of an approaching tornado. The first minute and a half of this is amazing. At 1:25 you can see the rotation approach then break the window as it impacts.
At the point you mention, you'll see in the background the actual center of the debris field pass. I'm not sure they would have this video if it were a direct hit.
That first minute and a half I thought the tornado had already gone through only to be surprised with that real fast tornado after that. I don’t know if that was the main tornado or maybe a satellite but I did not expect that! Amazing video!
@@MemphisTiger it was the main one, about 45min later there was another in this storm track that dropped down @20 miles SW momentarily but pulled up. Cromwell Iowa area. The Chariton tornado was wreaking havoc at that moment. I was sitting on the roadside near Williamson splitting the two storms.
I believe it just missed them out of frame. There s no doubt vortex winds hit them and you can hear it passing. This is one of the most awesome video I ve seen. I m glad everyone seems OK and hope the house isn t too badly damaged. Sounds like they have significant damage though. Thanks so much for sharing.
How terrible. My heart goes out to the families that are impacted by tornadoes. It's bad enough that their home was blown open, but to have hail dropping down on top of you afterwards... How terrible! I hope they get all the help they need.
Hail comes before, or after a tornado. As I remember from being in many tornado warnings at my college during summer school, we had a tornado warning nearly twice a week, and hail always followed, or was before a tornado hit.
This was direct hit by one vortex of a multi vortex tornado or a perhaps even a satellite tornado. The main circulation just missed the house and then this vortex comes barreling out of seemingly nowhere. It goes to show that you’re not always out of danger as soon as the “worst” part of the storm has passed.
It's been my experience that once the hail comes and then it clears up, you're out of immediate danger once you see the blue sky appear after the hail.
Yes, it hailed in the video. But how do you know for sure they got hit by a vortice? What kind of wisdom or knowledge do you have that makes you so confident when that part of the video was so fuzzy and rainy and dark?
@@Religious_man at 1:30 you definitely see a vortex approach and nearly hit where the camera was placed. If it would have been a direct hit there wouldn’t be this video to watch though. Near miss.

Multiple vortices then hail. Thanks for posting. But you know, this video really is very good. What I'm saying basically is how in the world are you going to top that? I mean that,'s about as real as it can get.
Yeah. I recorded my own direct hit from an EF4 at peak strength last year but it happened at 12:03AM (midnight) and it killed my Nest cameras so all we got is my brother cursing from the basement followed by the aftermath.
It was definitely a direct hit from what appeared to be a satellite tornado! Around 1:25 mark of the video you can clearly see a tornado slam into the house…that’s when the windows broke. That sucker was FAST!
Prayers for everyone affected. Wow, that tornado came at the house like a speeding car, amazing video as I've never seen anything like it. I hope you are all safe and that the damage wasn't too bad.
@@originallyitsmissmickey Most don't do both is the point. Prayers substitute action. Most people going to social media to say thoughts and prayers aren't doing jack shit. They are typing those words to pat themselves on the back and pretend like they've done something of substance. It's about social credit, rather than truly helping people. Maybe part of it is because these people are truly convinced an imaginary fairy in the sky is going to help others if you pray to it. But I think it's mostly just based on selfishness. The warm feeling like you've done something good, without actually lifting a finger. This is why it's a go-to phrase among politicians. The get to feign like they care and take all the credit, even though they won't actually do anything to help, despite having enormous power to lend aid. I'd rather never see the phrase or idea again. It's a meme at this point. Words from strangers aren't comforting people who have lost loved ones or homes. The comfort these people feel are from true acts of kindness, true substantive aid and words from loved ones.
@@Cthulhu013 I completely understand. But, some people actually mean it. They don't just say "praying for ____" for fun. They actually do it. Like for Ukraine, when people say "Praying for Ukraine right now", they (most of the time, I'm not saying EVERYONE does it) mean it. It's fine if you don't believe in Christianity, but I do, and a lot of other people do. But what I meant by "They could do both." is that they can pray for anyone affected in the storm and they can also donate sleeping bags, money, food, first aid kits, toys, clothes, etc. to them. That's all I have to say right now.
@@originallyitsmissmickey Oh I've been getting on to people about the Ukraine thing too. I notice too often people claiming to support Ukraine, putting the little flag in their twitter bio, only for them to tell me when I ask them in what manner have they supported Ukraine, "Well, I tweeted about it." "Oh, I liked this post on facebook a few days back ..." "I pray for them every night." I just shake my head at them. Every time. They're just saying words. They don't mean it. It's all about social media credit. I can count on one hand the number of people I know personally who has actually done anything substantive for Ukraine. I have a big family of fundamentalist Christians. Hardly any of them have lifted a finger for Ukraine other than to press a like button or a retweet or favorite or to send 'thoughts & prayers'. I'm not suggesting everybody does it. But most probably do, especially if you're reading their comment about it on social media. People that care aren't going to spend much time posting about it online, when they've already done something substantive for a cause. Maybe instead they'd post a link to a charity or an address to send supplies to if they are going to bother. I think we need to end the thoughts and prayers language routine that follows every tragedy, if only to not platform those looking to hijack it for their own narcissism. If you really care, you don't need to do both. You only need to lend a helping hand or wallet. If you're a loved one or friend of those afflicted, reach out privately with thoughts and prayers. If you're a stranger, make that donation. Volunteer. Send supplies. And if you want to send a little note of thoughts and prayers along with all that, fine. It doesn't do anything, but it's harmless. Where it doesn't belong is on social media so that 10k people can retweet it where maybe a handful of them actually show real support.
The noise of the glass breaking got me! Glad y’all made it through okay. The emergency sirens went off a little late… The exterior lights on the neighbors house went out so power must have been lost.
That was the best sounding Tornado I have ever heard. It was the classic train sound. I have not experience a direct hit like this. But I have been close to one. That dang Truck never moved. I hope all are ok!
Everyone who got hit by the recent storms and tornadoes, I sincerely hope y’all are okay now because the other day that was scary. My hometown had a tornado warning but nothing hit, apparently - unless it hit any open, grassy areas.
This is some of the the most incredible footage I’ve seen in a long time! I thought the tornado had gone through during the first part of the video only to be surprised after the initial damage you actually see the tornado slam the house!
Yes it was, and I was in WDM at the time the derecho hit. I thought it was the end of the world, never saw anything like it, the sky was so pitch black I couldn't see a thing in front of me. It was scary!
I like how 2 minutes after the tornado hits the sirens go off. Great vid, that breaking glass, the hail. The oh shit. 🌪. You know it's over when the wall of rain, hail and oh shits come out.
We had 3 EF2 tornadoes here in Sioux Falls at about 11:00 p.m. on 9/10/19, and some fool only set off some of the sirens. I was watching out my deck door on the top (4th) floor of my apt. bldg., and it was raining so hard I couldn't see anything so I had no idea about the tornadoes, even tho I came to find I was just outside the area of most damage. Here's hoping they've hired a monkey in the meantime who knows to flip ALL the siren switches next time so I and the rest of the residents in this big apt. acomplex will know to head to the underground parking areas!
It's an amazing video for such a sad situation. Hope ya'll are ok and recovering fast! Not sure where your located, but the sirens were extremely late and thats concerning. Glad you knew what was coming and went to your shelter!
At 1:30, you can visually see the tornado barreling towards the house from just a few feet away. That's absolutely horrifyingly amazing to see first person view of the inside of a tornado. Like a train, the tornado looks like it's moving slow but as it gets closer, you see the true speed at which it is going. Incredible🌪
So sorry to this family who suffered damages. Growing up in TX and OK, this became a normative part of my toddler and childhood. I'm honestly shocked that it didn't flip the truck parked outside, but glad it didn't. Take care, and thank you for showing this video so others can get an idea of the sequence of events (faint sound of a train, violent wind, rain, hail, blue sky) that occurs in case they're ever in one.
I pray for everyone affected by a tornado. I know all too well what it's like to go through one. Onalaska, TX 4-22-20. That was our life changing day (tornado). My advice is to keep positive even when all seems hopeless. You have your life. The rest really isn't that important.
Prayers don't do much. If you know what it's like to go through one, then rather than just offering prayers, please do something of substance. Prayers fall on deaf ears. It's like the tree falling in the woods when nobody is around. Does it make a sound? Nobody is around to hear it. And in the case of prayers, even if they were, it doesn't magically improve their lives. We've studied prayer and its efficacy. We know how ineffective it is.
Its a good thing, on many levels, that you guys didn’t take the full brunt of the storm! Hope ya’ll are OK. God speed on your recovery. Thanks for sharing.
I was in Iowa only 10 minutes from there, when it happened. It felt like that when the storm passed us (thankfully not a huge tornado by then). It was like the sun blinked out for a few seconds it became night.
I'm glad you are all okay. It could have been alot worse, had it completely run over your entire house. Stay safe out there everyone. Growing up in the great lakes area and spending most of my adult life in tornado alley, I know from experience how fast things can go south, so to speak, with these things
Great shot and thanks for sharing, im sure you had lots of damage, we could hear it but I think you came out okay compared to manyyy that lost everything! God Bless you and thank God you and your family is okay! Must of been a vert scary situation
This is such an interesting video. This was either a large multi-vortez tornado and they got hit by a vorticity or that was a satellite tornado to the main tornado.
Wow.. now that escalated quickly.. I think if I lived in an area with such weather I'd have something that can cover all my windows.. whether I have time to cover all my windows though is another matter
Back in 2002 April 29th to be exact. I was coaching my daughter in a Softball game. We saw a storm coming from the West. National Weather service had issued a Tornado warning just to the West of us here in the Massillon, OH area. We all ran to our vehicles. I was only 2 miles from home. Just got in the garage and I see this white wall of wind destroying my neighbors garage. I grabbed my dog like a fumble in a Super Bowl game and ran downstairs. My wife screaming at me to get in the basement. It blew past doing they say 55 mph. I ran upstairs and everything appeared intact until I opened the garage. Wall blew out and garage doors caved in. Had I been a minute or two later, my neighbors Gazebo would have probably killed me as it was smashed into my house. $25,000 damage. F-1
@@Gnomes22 You know, at the time I was not concerned with my safety, but terrified of my house being blown apart. I was a little more fearless back then. ;)
Glad you made it through. Years ago a similar deal happened near Kinross, Iowa. A woman had just pulled into her garage when the storm hit. She got out of the car but before she could get into the house the walls blew out and the roof collapsed on her. It was really a shock to the community; she was a nurse in a local clinic. RIP.
This is an interesting video. That seems to be a circulation around 1:30 that moved in after the main circulation passed by seemingly to the North. It would be a place you would expect a satellite tornado if there was one. Since this tornado was violet, it likely had some satellites at some point. It looked to have occurred after the main RFD surge passed by. Interesting.
It started off as f1 twins then they formed into a big ugly f2 tornado as it hit buildings building debree it hit the scale of f3 to f4 with multiple cycloning vortexs ive only seen that in the documentaries of moore tornado
You can see the wall cloud in the first few seconds. Then the debris. Then the rain starts to pulsate like they are trapped in hundreds of mini vortexes inside one larger vortex.
First, glad everyone is okay and great video. I'm not trying to be funny at all but for some reason, this reminds me of a car wash. It's like the wash cycle with the arms and rags beating against your car, a rinse cycle, and then you drive out and it's all clean / calm. Crazy!
After going back and watching several more times, I saw something I haven't seen in earlier views. All the way to the left of the screen at the beginning it looks like rotation. I mentioned in an earlier comment , it sounded like the main area of rotation just missed the house which was great but the outside unseeable vortex winds obviously had an impact. Well..... upon seeing the aftermath video a few minutes ago I found this again and feel I need to correct my earlier comment that their home took a near miss. It was a little closer than that. So glad all were able to get out unharmed.
Wow, that's a very quiet Tornado Warning System they have in your Iowa county. Ours here on Planet Arkansas would wake the dead & actuates when a twister is detected anywhere in the county. In 2011 my little town of Clarksville Ar. was hit by TWO tornadoes on the same night. Heard one pass directly overhead from the safety of our underground bunker. It really did sound like a freight train, but nothing like you experienced. Glad y'all were safe.
I am in Arkansas too and have always been terrified of any storms. Dark clouds send me running. I was accidently locked outcin a storm when I was little ( screen door hook caught and locked me out. I remember that I could see my grandmother but couldn't get in..absolutely terrorized!) and I just do not do storms. I do not like to drive in rain and stay home if I can.

SE of DesMoines tracked through winterset and Newton. Was another behind this one in same path a HR later that pulled up and dissipated. At the same time one was tracking from Corydon to Chariton. A few videos popping up today of that storm track.
The sirens aren't controlled by the national weather service they are controlled by the county emergency management and they have to get the info from the national weather service and make sure it meets their criteria before activating the sirens. For example my county used to have a policy of activating the sirens if we had a severe thunderstorm warning during a tornado watch. So it's entirely up to the county when and if the sirens are activated. Even then they are outdoor warning sirens and their purpose is to get people who are outside to go inside and seek further information they are not meant to alert people who are already inside.
To clear some things up about the sirens: 1. I think the sirens were sounding before anything hit - people might be mistaking them for an air conditioner or something in the beginning of the video (I sure did). Sounds like they're 12-port sirens which are fairly high-pitched. I could hear that pitch at the beginning, it was just really muffled and quiet. That's why most siren systems are called "Outdoor" warning sirens; walls and insulation can completely block the sound. In this case, as I mentioned before, they might have been sounding but were so muffled that they could be mistaken for something else. That's why you need another means of getting a tornado warning. 2. Probably not relevant to this video, but many cities sound their sirens for a 3-minute cycle and do not reactivate them. Most sirens are mechanical, and many do not have continuous duty motors. That means they can only run for so long before they are damaged, so they need a cool-down period. Some places choose to run one cycle (3 minutes is typical but they can run for a little longer without a problem), others choose to use an on-off cycle (I think Nashville runs them for 3 minutes and rests 8).
No it didn't. The house is still there, the roof is probably gone which is why you can't see it very well but the house is still there. Watch the video again but keep your eye directly on the house across the road. Just before the tornado hits, you will see two red blinking lights, this could be their car alarm going off in the driveway. After the tornado passes you still see those blinking lights momentarily and you can see part of the house.

Thanks for the description and pointing it out, the force of that was insane

Its like a buzzsaw.
There was no sirens at all.

@@nancybernard3117 I think it's usually before the tornado.

Exactly! Never think it’s over. Let the Tornado dictate that.
It's been my experience that once the hail comes and then it clears up, you're out of immediate danger once you see the blue sky appear after the hail.

To your point, I've unfortunately seen much worse posted of more direct hits, or at least, of stronger tornadoes hitting a house.

Prayers? What have prayers done? Send money. Send food. Send tarps. Take in those who've been displaced.
@@Cthulhu013 We can do both.
I notice too often people claiming to support Ukraine, putting the little flag in their twitter bio, only for them to tell me when I ask them in what manner have they supported Ukraine, "Well, I tweeted about it." "Oh, I liked this post on facebook a few days back ..." "I pray for them every night."
I just shake my head at them.

Glad you made it through. Years ago a similar deal happened near Kinross, Iowa. A woman had just pulled into her garage when the storm hit.
Most definitely
First, glad everyone is okay and great video. I'm not trying to be funny at all but for some reason, this reminds me of a car wash. It's like the wash cycle with the arms and rags beating against your car, a rinse cycle, and then you drive out and it's all clean / calm. Crazy!
After going back and watching several more times, I saw something I haven't seen in earlier views. All the way to the left of the screen at the beginning it looks like rotation. I mentioned in an earlier comment , it sounded like the main area of rotation just missed the house which was great but the outside unseeable vortex winds obviously had an impact.
Well..... upon seeing the aftermath video
a few minutes ago I found this again and feel I need to correct my earlier comment that their home took a near miss. It was a little closer than that.
So glad all were able to get out unharmed.
Wow, that's a very quiet Tornado Warning System they have in your Iowa county. Ours here on Planet Arkansas would wake the dead & actuates when a twister is detected anywhere in the county. Gary England was a legend. His coverage of the El Reno storm was incredible; how he coordinated the coverage.
Wow! Incredible footage, even more amazing when you listen with headphones, felt like I was right there experiencing it. Hope the family and home are OK. I'm curious about the home that was visible in the distance at the beginning of the video, seems to either be "gone" or perhaps just obscured after the tornado???
I think that was just a reflection on the glass of the inside of the house where the camera was sitting. ??
Oh shit is right. Ty for posting, I really hope everyone is able to recover!
@1:27 Right into the house! That is a PERFECT capture of a satellite vortex orbiting the main wedge.
was this in iowa?
SE of DesMoines tracked through winterset and Newton. Was another behind this one in same path a HR later that pulled up and dissipated. At the same time one was tracking from Corydon to Chariton. A few videos popping up today of that storm track.
I’m glad they’re safe. That storm system was wicked. And what’s the deal with the tornado sirens going off after the tornado passed through?
They were going off before during and after. The storm was louder than the sirens.
@@mistydew5391 Thanks for clarifying that.
To clear some things up about the sirens:
That was freaky. Watching this at 13:00 on the first Wednesday of the month! Got real immersive.
its it just me or did it completely take out the house axross the way
Yes. It did.
O my...it is gone!
@@susie.e6428 Are we talking about the same house? Not the one directly across the street...but the one way off on the road in the distance. You can see a car come from that area right before the storm hit.I have watched at least 5 times and I can't see it...it might be misty.
@@sillyworm are you talking about the white small house in the distance. I looked at the video a few times and I can't tell either because of the rain still coming down. Too hard to see through the window.
Okay so first you get your house smashed on top of you, you're pummeled by flying debris. Then rain drenches you and while freezing cold and beat up hail stones start smacking your skull. You know what? I think I'm going to pass on the whole tornado experience thing if you dont mind.
Well, the whole thing is covered with snow, now. Iowa weather!
This sounds like the best audio for a tornado. It can be heard so clearly.
That was insane!! Hope all is ok and great footage
@1:26 the the rotation is so fast out of nowhere...after it seemed to have passed by....looks like 1500 RPM
not a direct hit, but close enough.
That impact is unreal it was a bomb. Glad you guys are okay
Glad y’all are ok! My hometown just got hit and it did a good bit of damage. 🥺
There’s that freight train noise.
i get very nervous just watching 1. Seen them level too many neighborhoods and houses.
Astonishing footage!
That is terrifying. I've been close to several tornadoes, and feet away from one when I worked downtown, and that was scary indeed. No control whatsoever, you are at the mercy of the weather and God.
Wow you were lucky.
This video believe me , find another video that shows all three phases of the tornado! Wow! Thank-you for that in the EYE footage. Big tornado! Go p&d mcaninch Go Rams
I had a very intense dream once that was all audio. Just like this; first heavy rain then small branches hit the house then the shingles from the garage and debris from larger branches then all the nails popping out of the rafters and then the lights went out. I was frozen in fear for my family and I finally was able to get up and go running into my husband’s room to make sure he was OK. I had to go outside and see that there was no storm, no debris anywhere. It was so real.
Wow that's insane! Thoughts and prayers to all! That F250 looks like mine. Looks like it stood up to the test of the storm.
