Not really! She had models like Charlie Chaplain and Buster Keaton whom she admired and followed. She was by no means a pioneer in physical comedy! You have to be very young not to know that a LOT of what she did was based in Vaudeville slapstick, which was very much 'alive' in the minds of entertainers of her generation. (From time to time Fred and Ethel refer to their past in Vaudeville.) She was a pioneer in a LOT of ways, but when it comes to physical comedy, she was in a very long, long tradition. Slapstick was not something women did much, as it is physically demanding and even dangerous, but physical comedy was in a way 'safer' for women to do than, for example, standup, because they were effectively making themselves look silly, which was not threatening to masculine audiences the way observational comedy might be. Carol Burnett talked about how she started out doing a lot of physical stunts and pulling faces, making herself look goofy, swooning over handsome men, etc., because that's what women could get away with most easily when it comes to comedy. It took her some time to gain the confidence to up her game to a more sophisticated, intelligent style of comedy based on sketches where she acted rather than fell down, though she never stopped doing the physical comedy she was so good at.
They hated each other too! Lol that's the funny part. Not really, just on set. I believe Vivian was at Williams death bed and he told her how much he appreciated her.
Vivian was NOT at Williams death bed 😂😂😂😂 He died on a street while walking. She celebrated his death with drinks for everyone when she found out!@@godsrevolver9737
@@godsrevolver9737I adore that ❤❤❤ I thought he passed in the lobby of the hotel he was living at 😢 but I pray what you said is what actually happened 🙏🏼
I tell you, "I love Lucy" was way ahead of its time. The episode where they rehearsed the doctor's visit or any kind of emergency holds true to this very day. Do you really think in an actual emergency, people would really react to procedure? Nope. Not at all. Lucy and the gain just put a spin on it and it was terrific!!!
There was a similar one on the Lucy show where Lucy and Vivian kept practicing for the fire alarm routine. It was hilarious they panicked full speed clumsy when they heard a alarm 😅
Lucille and Desi, had alot of input in the writing . She’d make it funny, but realistic. There is a few documentary about it love Lucy ,and their love life on Tubi and prime
How true. When I was going into labor withy first child my husband was a wreck. He ran around the house asking where my curlers were. At this time we used such things and I guess he must have thought I was going to need them in the hospital
I was a child in the 50s and everyone, I mean EVERYONE, watched I Love Lucy. Lucy and Desi were fantastic together, and William and Vivian made the perfect mix. To this day they are unmatched!
In the Lucy-DesiMuseum- We were never there and would LOVE to- it is too far for us to travel there , but you can look at their wonderful sets and exhibits online on their website and it says if you go there and can stand at the podioum for Vitameatavegamin and do the WHOLE thing correctly in ONE take, you get a prize! SO FUN! Their children run that and it seems wonderful!
Happiness as a child in the 50's was having tonsilitis (again) and getting to stay home from school and be snuggled in my parents bed watching the daily 12 noon "I Love Lucy" rerun on Mom and Dad's TV while slurping hot chicken soup that my mother served me on a tray
When I was little in the 90s mostly, when I was sick with strep throat, I went to my Grandma’s house. She would make tea with honey and lemon, the only thing I would drink when I had strep. She also had cable tv, so I’d watch tv land, which played I love lucy, the Andy Griffith show, etc. and nap off and on. My Grandma also used to make me chicken noodle soup, too. I didn’t love being sick, but I loved any opportunity to be at my Grandma’s house. ❤️🥰🥲
I Love Lucy is timeless. My favorite episodes are the ones filmed in Hollywood especially the episode at the Brown Derby. I've seen it so many times and every time I laugh hysterically.
It was said, back in the '50's that *Joan Davis* was once the queen of comedy. At first l thought, "Impossible". But then I saw a few episodes of _l Married Joan_ that were quite funny, and thought that Joan could possibly give Lucy a run for her money.
In the late 90s as a kid I would watch ILL with my grandparents and parents. Now knocking on 30 I still watch this for the laughs and memories with my grandparents who have passed on, and my parents when they were young.
Watched the show when I was growing up and, along with The Honeymooner's, it's still one of the funniest shows ever written. Nothing comes close to those old shows.
Cinema is the greatest invention. It all happened three of my lifetimes ago, but it's still hilarious! I wonder how much we missed from hundreds of years ago and how little people changed.
Once, in 1966, I worked at Leaf Brands Candy Co in Chicago with my new husband. My job was on a conveyor belt line with Mr freeze pops coming at us like that candy! "Speed it up!" 😂
At 37:20, the man that jumped into the pool with Lucy is actor John Hart. He played "The Lone Ranger" for a couple of seasons when Clayton Moore was in a contracdt dispute with the studio.
13:15 Fun Fact: The wrapping department scene was the inspiration for the Drake & Josh episode “I Love Sushi”. The episodes title is also a reference to I Love Lucy.
Im 46 im from England, south London and im here visiting nyc and i love Lucy, one of my favourite shows that. Seems like everyone who comments has to announce their race, creed age birth sign before making a comment😅👍🏻
When can we see “We Love Lucy” the one hour episodes? I want to watch the one with Tallulah Bankhead & all the other great celebrities during that time 😊😅
Actually I have seen Lucille Ball in about 10 films I thought she was great in - pre 1951 and I Love Lucy.1. Lured (film noir, 1947 with George Sanders) 2. The Big Street (1940's) with Henry Fonda 3. Dance, Girl Dance, about burlesque dancer co-stared with Maureen O'Hara, but Lucy stole the show (late 1940's). Also, she did her own singing and dancing (not dubbed).
I remember hearing from one of Priscilla's presentations on a special about Elvis 's likes and dislikes, where Priscilla said that He loved watching I love Lucy a.d the Carol Brunette show
I went to the Lucy and Dessi museum last summer and it was amazing, I had so much fun, my mom had shown me some clips of her and I just felt sad today so I came back to watch more

My favorite was when Lucy was caught stuck in the suitcase and Dr Peterson came over was dancing to Lucy's song - Ricky walked in. Hysterical!

I've watched this show all my life. So hard to believe it was in reruns before I was even born. It's timeless.
When my son was four, I taught him to recite the vitametavegimen commercial, perfectly.

It's crazy that you were watching reruns in the 50s and I was watching the same ones in the 90s! I'm so glad I got the chance.
"I Love Lucy" has given me and still does, many cherished memories.
I got tonsillitis too as a kid. And it was somehow comforting to sleep on my parents bed.
I saw every single one of these episodes when they came out in the 1950's.
And you’re only 25 years old now, right (wink wink)👌
I'm jealous of anyone that grew up with this show!
Me too; I remember them all!
