NL Explorer: Winter "BLIZZARD" Camping in MSR Hubba Hubba NX Tent

  • **CHECK OUT MY NEW SERIES!! • 68 Days Across Newfoun...
This episode follows Saku and I in December 2017. We weather a blizzard just outside of St. John's, NL, Canada. I use and discuss the MSR Hubba Hubba NX Tent which I purchased locally at The Outfitters. It's the model I took across Newfoundland with me.
My trip intentions were to enjoy the new experience and see what the tent could handle in more extreme conditions. It has handled torrential downpours and high winds but never a blizzard. I am well aware it is a three season tent and not primarily designed for conditions like this but if caught in a storm on a long distance expedition I want to know if it could work for me. Reason being is that some of my trips are backpacking and this tent is light and strong. A heavier four-season tent would not be ideal to carry on your shoulders in a minimalist style.
In the musical edits I even added the chorus of Ryan's Fancy's wonderful tune "A Children's Winter", performed by yours truly. Hopefully it's not too hard on the ears.
    Thanks for watching!

Your videos have been getting me through some tough times with my mental health. Being cooped up during this pandemic has tested my anxiety in a big way. I love your content, attitude, and SAKU! The music you choose also eases my soul. “ Parting glass” is awesome. I have never ventured into that genre of music, but have since pulled up every track in your videos.I have nearly watched all your videos, and I guess when I’m done, I’ll just start over again. Thank you Justin

Thanks so much everyone for the love on this video!! I was more than happy to take you all along for the ride it was. Some have asked about my teeth lol. They were lost during a hockey incident. I have dentures but rarely take them in the woods in fear of misplacing them! Anyways, thanks again for all the kind words and support. Stay tuned for more episodes in the future. Cheers!

When you said " I absolutely love it, love the snow coming down right now", that is why I love watching your videos, well.... and the dogs too. Some of us seem to have an innate feel for the nature that we love and snow is mine. When I saw Saku pause for a moment and then run into the snow and frolic it brings back of lot of great memories for me and my Digger. Thank you so much for sharing your love of "the woods" with all of us.

I really enjoyed your video. You look like you're having a great time camping in the snow. We might get an inch or two of snow every other year here in South Carolina. One of my Dad's ships was sunk 40 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. He always talked about how friendly the people were. I hope to come visit Canada but with my health I doubt it wil ever happen. Keep those cameras rolling!

I've been hiking the Maritimes since the new year and made it to Newfoundland west coast over a month ago... When it came time to head home (Nova Scotia), I got my ass kicked by sleet and wind. Hitched a ride to the Goulds where I met your cousin Mike. The good man took me out to his buddies cabin on ski-do and let me use it for the night. All my gear was soaked so I had to head back to St. John's and clean/dry it all and started again two nights ago. My gear is minimal. Thermal blanket, -4 sleeping bag, 8x5 tarp. Handsaw, two blades, and twine. Got a 854 km hike to Port aux Basques.
Newfoundland is amazing for survival. The winds kill and dry out so many trees, all you need do is reem it side to side and you've got tinder + kindling at once.
I learned from Survival Russia the Siberian log fire which burns all night long with absolute minimal attention so regardless of wind and snow, my site was never too cold.

As the years go by, I rely less and less on some of the modern gear. Sleeping bags. I own three. In 2016, western US, I found myself each night just sleeping on top of it. So at the first resupply point, a month into the trip, I sent it home. The next two months were a queen sized flannel sheet and two wool blankets,,, always at least one under me. In 2019, April and May, I took along a 25 dollar Walmart summer weight bag. I figured at 25 bucks I could throw it away and not worry about it. Flannel sheet and two wool blankets. I slept without setting up the tent a couple of nights,,, under the stars is a treat,, at about 0 F -17C, The two wool blankets are the trick and the tent's ground cloth over and under.
Clothing? Cotton and wool. Cotton for comfort, especially warm weather. Wool for warmth. May sound a bit plush,,, but hard to find better,, a cashmere sweater to sleep in or particularly cold days, merino wool mid layers, both tops and bottoms. And ALWAYS the best wool socks. The best of those will cost as much as most tents for three pair,,, and worth every, single, penny ! Buffalo Wool Co. out of Texas. Advantage Trekker Boot Socks,, don't leave home without them. I don't buy anything polyester any more. just a bunch of hype by the polyester salesman,,, they do keep you cool in hot weather and will freeze you to death in the winter,, and feel slimey while they are doing it.
I have gone back to wool. It is heavy,, not the best for back packing,, but the best wool??/ If you ever find a Swiss army wool blanket,,, oh, oh,,, Cashmere or merino wool sweater,, buffalo down socks ? 80% Merino wool socks?
As to tents? Any tent that the fly comes all the way down to the ground, so you have a true double wall. Not too big (to take advantage of body warmth), not too small, (If you have to spend the whole day inside it in the snow) For me? I am huge,, a three or four person tent with a full fly. Not too tall.

Joe mentioned about you and I'm glad he did. Great videos! I like this one, reminds me of withstanding a winter breeze in a summer tent at -30C°. In the morning you could take down the tent and the outer shell would stand up by it's own when frozen solid due to the moist gathering inside the tent when warming food and just inhale/exhaling.

Loved the vid! It looked like you and Saku had a lot of fun. I wish we got snow like that here in my area of North Carolina. You've got a new sub in me and I very much look forward to your next video.

Thank you so much for the kind words and sub! We had so much fun. The snow is amazing! Do you get snow in North Carolina at all?

    • @marykatehilton975
      @marykatehilton975 6 лет назад +2

Justin Barbour I'm about an hour North of Charlotte and we do get snow. Usually at least 2-3 times every winter. But because of where we are compared to the mountains, if a storm comes down from the North, we usually don't get much because the storm will stall in the mountains. Now if a storm comes up from the south and collides with a burst of arctic air coming down from your neck of the woods, then we'll get an unknown amount of snow. I once got 2 feet in one day...and for a girl that was raised in Flordia....THAT was quite an experience.
North Carolina gets a lot of snow in the mountains every year as well and has some great skiing and beautiful parks throughout the Smoky Mountains and the Appalachian Trail.

Thanks Justin for sharing your trek in the woods experience. Being from south Louisiana in USA, Our world would collapse if we had snow and cold you experienced. I think it would be fun to do BUT only as a visit. Sub tropical weather is why I live next to the Gulf of Mexico. Keep posting your videos..

jons43 once you get used to the snow and cold, it's just pure beauty. Gotta be careful sometimes, it can be dangerous, but hey, no tornadoes, biting insects, poisonous snakes etc....every climate has its ups and downs.
