My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.

FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Almost four years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGearList
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off RUclips? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jayswanson
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one: amzn.to/2ykS9Ux
And here's the French wishlist: bit.ly/JaysFrenchWishList
Thanks for watching!
The cake looks amazing! In Italy, the 6th of January is La Befana, so Felice Befana! But as I am in Washington DC, apparently it is ‘coup by crazy-people’ day. To that I say, I’d like to cancel my subscription to 2021. I’ve experienced the 7-day trial and I’m not interested. Done, next! 🙄
VanFourth! 😂😂
video is awesome as usual but wait ..can we all just take notice of how you left your phone in the window and BIKED OFF ??? LOL !! Youre stepping it up ! Next well see the phone in the grass as you take off in a plane LOL
I like your idea to hit the quarters when it makes more sense.
Vote for return of 80 in 80! Also, that cake looked great
May the VanFourth be with you 😂😂😂
Bike back, coffee, good food and sharing with friends.... looks like the perfect day for you. Glad you could have some time of normalcy.
Glad you got your Van Fourth!😆 The galette de rois looked absolutely delish! And I agree, no fun if you can't enter+explore regarding the 80 in 8! We can wait!
I’ve been pandemmy-bingeing your vlog (seasons 1-3) and it’s really lovely to see how you’ve evolved. From struggling on tips to having your mug on a bag of locally roasted Parisian coffee!
I found a French Patisserie here in Detroit and bought a Galette Des Rois for Epiphany!
Nice!
That cake looked spectacular ✨
I’m so glad you got to have delicious galette des rois with a few others! ✨🤍✨
Great that you got your bike! Enjoyed this video...as always.
Just seems odd bringing meals to a cafe. Happy you got your bike back. That cake looks delicious. Pandemic, Trump and assault on our sacred buildings has been a tough week. Your videos help. Thanks, be well and safe
Bringing meals is sharing with friends. It super cool, and sweet. I think it’s a combination of generosity and self care.
Any food you cook looks simple but delicious! 🤤 And the cake 🍰 looks yum!
Happy Birthday Sam 🎈🎉🎂. Hi Jay.👋😊
I love Galette des Rois too. Always make one on New Years Eve. Didn’t know it was meant to be eaten at Epiphany shhhh don’t tell the French ! Enjoyed reading that gentleman’s paper over his shoulder on the Metro. Am always doing that on the tram here lol.
Hi, good morning. Looks like I missed whole bicycle drama, but I am happy that you are happy. If this is an electric bike than, WOW very slick, and the battery place is very slim, good riding. Other excellent thing I noticed how nicely you found fulfillment of your social needs, sharing your lunch with others, bringing small groups together. Very nice. yes, it is different but great. I see that through my daughter - young adult, Before jumping into any relationship comes along, now I hear her ( she is in her room) meeting people on zoom, watching movies together, playing amongus , taking time to learn about people, isn't that the base of long and lasting relationship everybody wants and long. you are very caring person but I am sure you will find a true better half. meantime enjoy.
That galette des rois looked so tasty. I was left salivating, just like the dog.
Galette des Rois - a great cake if you like almond paste
I have all the ingredients to make one and so this afternoon
will be baking a vegan Galette des Rois.
That pasta looks amazing 🤩
Jay! Glad your head healed and you got your bike back. 😉
After you say the pasta is done and keep talking, I cannot pay attention to anything you are saying. I just keep thinking, "Get the pasta out!"
So glad you finally got your bike. Hope number 4 is the magic number. That pasta looked really delicious. The galette was a piece of art; I bet it was yummy.
Morning Jay wow bike 4 thought bike 3
Glad to see you finally got the bike. Did @Vanmoof even offer anything to make things right after this long ordeal (e.g. extend the service coverage even further, etc). I suspect not but I am glad to hear there have been improvements on the local customer service at least. Enjoy your well earned Vanfourth!
I hope this bike sticks. It’s good that the vanmoof folks are more customer service friendly now. Looked like fun with your friends and the cake. :). Great crew
Rois is such a hard word to say! The French R is a mean letter LOL Have a great day :)
Après Noël, le 25/12.
Après Nouvel An , le 01/01.
On fête l’Epiphanie , le 1er dimanche de janvier de la nouvelle année ! 🙋
Avec la galette des rois et des reines😉🤩
My first GdR party I got the little prize in my slice.
I still have it somewhere.
Yay for getting that mean machine of a bike back. Loved the cake with friends. I wonder who swallowed the feve from the cake, lol. Cheers! 😎
@samanichol Happy birthday Sam!
For someone who's never cut open an eggplant, you certainly made it all look real gourmet!
Looked delish! Love seeing you all up and about town. @jayswanson
So happy for you and VanFourth, you make a beautiful couple 😉😂 also, the ANGLES today! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Hey Jay, my names Neil and I just wan to thank you for all the great content. I lived in Paris at 11 rue Gay Lussac for two years and Your videos remind me of many things. Thank you so much mate and keep up the great work!
Your name is 💯👍🏻🟠
That pasta recipe looked delicious!!!
Just one thing though, pasta should be cooked in a lot more water 😋 At least that is what Italians always insist upon ; don't know if it changes the taste in any way though... I've never tried with little water
You can’t just casually have cake with Ashley Weston and Dorion!
I forgot my tux at home 😬😂
Yay on the bike! You should be sponsored by Hello Fresh, your final product looks as good as the picture (I'm now craving eggplant). I'd give up being vegan for an hour for a slice of that cake! It looked so good!
Your Mac and cheese looks amazing!!!!
Another great vid made me smile and the end awaiting who broke teeth lol pity not little dog inside cake but still it looked good i could even taste it in my mind over here in U.K
Salut à toi Christine 😊
reheat the galette des rois for a few minutes in the oven before tasting it. It's better. Preheat your oven to 150 ° C then turn it off. Place the galette in the oven off for 5 to 10 minutes
I hope you’re well, Jay. My fiancée and I enjoy your videos. We shan’t be buying any Van Moofs anytime soon though. 😂
i cant ride a bike (i know, i know) but you also make it look so easy and practical
Salut Jay, ça va? I am glad you enjoyed your galette des rois. I LOVE a delicious galette! What? No crown? At the pâtisserie where I got my delicious galette (courtesy of Miss Madeleine pâtisserie in Manhattan), I made sure I left with 2 crowns....the pâtissier (French, him and his wife are from Guadeloupe) said there was only 1 crown included in my order, so I made sure I got another one (j'ai raqué 1$ for the extra one), non mais attends ;) Yesterday, it was my first time celebrating la galette in the comforts of my own home (which I share with my younger brother and his girlfriend). She got la fève, becoming la Reine and hence coronated my brother. All in good fun! I'm used the galette tradition, it was an annual fun celebration at my last job for the last 14 years (I worked for a French-owned receptive tour operator/sightseeing company based in Times Square, as an operations / reservations manager, catering to the French market, bon je ne vais pas rentrer dans tous les détails. Before that job, I celebrated la galette on and off. Bon enfin bref, I am glad you got your vélo back! Happy riding! Stay safe et bon week-end!
Well Jay....Van Moof?! Bike 4......!? Back to the consrtuction table! And .....don't look in the future! But you take it easy with your life!☕🎂🚲🌰
Don’t you secure the bike to something solid ?
"I've never cut one of these before" dont worry Jay, Aubergines hardly ever fight back ...
Please share a recipe four galette de rois please
Good background.music
Vlog Story Idea (since you have your bike again!): Could you give us your take on how Paris biking has changed and show us some temporary "coronapistes" which are being made permanent per a recent NY Times "Paris by Bike" editorial: nyti.ms/3opy7S1
Looks like the US had a real epiphany on Epiphany. And the king must go!
little bit of Orwell...2 wheels better than 4 :)
Jay, you need way more water to cook your pasta in!
Could someone have accidentally swallowed the little figure in the galette and then was too embarrassed to admit it? :-)
Wait four hours, it might reappear.........😱
Forgive a relatively old woman her urge to teach? Sorry in advance and here's hoping that I am not developing some unusual compulsive disorder late in life as the itch to say something about absolute minutiae in an extraordinary looking lunch prep is disconcerting. And I was never a professional chef, cook or culinary expert. So, again, I am sorry. I noticed some of the pasta on the inside side of the pot, getting roasted but not cooking in the water with the rest. Maybe (Maybe!) 2 noodles. When you pour/place pasta, fresh or dry, in the boiling water you want to give it a quick stir. Just spin the spoon/ladle/fork/claw around the pot one or two spins. That pushes all of the pasta into the water so that it all cooks evenly and correctly. Lasagna and manicotti noodles are large and delicate so you want to be gentle but you do want to make sure everything gets into the water.
Do you still have a good lock for your bike? I saw a pretty cool fingerprint bike lock not long ago though an old fashioned one would be fine too. Does Van Moof have some form (s) of security built in? If it does, what does it latch on to? Prints? Iris? Bluetooth to your phone? I got the'i don't have to lock my bike vibe as you stopped both times but I still had a couple of 'move so SOMEONE can keep an eye on the bike' moments a few times, which is ridiculous but there you go.
Love that bike!!!
Fun video, as usual! Thank you!! I am with you on the 80 in 8s when everything is closed but lets see how it goes!!
