My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa. Paris (yes the one in France) has been my home for years now and I have every intention of staying here for as long as they'll have me. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much. Now I make videos about visiting Paris, traveling in Europe, and try to share what I've learned along the way. I hope you enjoyed what you found.

Spring in Paris...ahhhh
One of my favorite visits. Flowers, crisp nights.
I did a 2 day tour visiting chocolate shops at all the main attractions (during Easter) and it was magical.
I really want to walk down the sidewalk and see Jay in real life, standing in the middle of the sidewalk, talking to himself while staring at some camera I can't see. And then I'll play with Cooper.
haha you never know!
I met him and cooper unexpectedly
I’ve looked for Jay each time I’ve been there!
I've gotten great advice from your videos. Thanks. Here's my advice to you. No good pizza in Paris? Pizza Roma, 27 Rue des Ecoles. My wife and I were staying nearby. My wife was feeling sick one night, so I walked down the block and gave this place a try. I thought the pizza was great. And they had great pistachio gelato, too. The owner / chef heard me trying my best to speak to my waitress (his relative, probably) in Italian and came over to talk to me. I ordered gelato and an espresso for desert. When the bill came, it didn't include the coffee and gelato. When I pointed out the mistake, the chef came over and told me that it was no mistake, those were on the house. Pretty great experience overall. I hope you find it as good as I did. Thanks.
From watching your videos the past 5 years or so, I trust that the places you'd recommend are places I want to go. I have NOT seen "Emily in Paris" but from what I've heard about it, that is absolutely so NOT the "Paris experience I want." I'm a writer and want to see the city and some places that writers and artists frequented, but I don't want to do a "Midnight in Paris" thing either.
Honestly, what I like about your tips and advice are that they seem to align with something I noticed during the pandemic. I'd see pictures of Paris and the sites were DEVOID of nearly all tourists, and I'd think "wow, that looks like heaven: NO CROWDS." If I encounter crowds and tons of people, I want them to be Parisians, not tourists.
Your guide is on my "to buy" list for the next couple months. Thanks in the meantime.
You're most welcome! Thank you for the kind words and encouragement. Sometimes it can feel a bit like what you have to offer isn't what anyone really wants. But I'm happy there are plenty of folks out there into the side of Paris I love 🥂
Hey, don’t be too quick to dismiss Midnight in Paris. After 33 years of telling Francophile family members that I had no desire to return to Paris, my defenses weakened and I went back with them in 2011. I’ve been 10 more times since then and another trip is planned for the not too distant future. I can’t get enough. Yeah, I’ve done the MIP thing, but now I know my way around really well, mostly from doing the “flaneur” thing “à pied”. There will be crowds in Paris, just because…it’s Paris. If you choose wisely the season of your visit , you can reduce exposure to the tourist waves, and still see the touristy places that really grab you. Then get out and about and explore where the locals live, eat and work and hang. In the meantime, keep watching Jay’s vids cuz he’s 🤙🏽
@@gregoryhageage6362 Don't get me wrong: as a writer and a fan of Woody Allen, I love it. But culturally it just reinforces a lot of stereotypes and expectations which I KNOW from watching Jay's videos simply aren't true.
No argument from me about the cultural stereotypes in MIP. I know they’re whacked precisely because of my trips to Paris over the years, and Jay’s work really exposes them and reinforces what I know to be true. My only issue with Jay is that he’s in Paris and I’m not. But his videos get me even more stoked to get back there as soon as I can.
I have lived in France for one year with my wife on the temporary protection Ukrainian refugee regime. Now, we applied for a French talent visa six months ago and are living in France illegal because of the slowness of the visa renewal process and our temporary protection was not renewed and it says that our talent visa is “pending processing”. Also, we have not even been able to rent a nice apartment because every owner wants a “guarantor” and we have no one and have not paid taxes because we have not lived here long enough to paid taxes on world income. If France doesn’t renew in w couple months, we are moving to Italy because this isn’t working here. In the end, France has just been a shit experience for us for the year
Just got back from ten days in France - mostly in Provence but bookended by days in Paris. We found your guidance really helpful, even if we didn't always follow it. I am a bit of a coffee snob and, as you say, the French are mostly not obsessed with coffee (in the way that, say, the Italians are) but we made a conscious decision to prioritize croissants over coffee. I can get good coffee at home. We did want a classic bistro meal, banged that out the first night, and never looked back.
True, your advice probably wouldn't have been right for me on my first trip to Paris, when I wanted to visit more of the must-see sights, eat more classically French foods, etc., but on my last trip, your guide was perfect! BTW, I hope Homer Lobster doesn't get cut. The people there were so kind and the food was fantastic! I could make the same comment about all of your recommendations that we tried..spot on!
I'm glad they all proved solid! Homer is still in, as is Janet. I just want to go through and make sure they all remain places I really enjoy. Thanks for the kind words 🥂
We came here the same way as you, I believe. Being an artist is not really a wise choice. I ended up this way because I'm shit at everything else. Thus, the visa talent was my only option. It has benefits, like flexibility and being able to bring my family along, but the disadvantages are clear. I don't remember who told me this but it rings true. "Many things that appear very brave, aren't really. they are just very expensive."
That's a great quote. Also really nice to meet the other day! I thought about referencing you among the few I know who've gotten this visa - I definitely got through in the loophole-ridden early days 😆
@@JaySwanson good to meet you as well, and cooper, of course!
Great reminder when looking for advice/recs from the internet that it's useful to find info from people who are aligned to your interests to avoid disappointment. That being said, it can be rewarding to step a bit out of your comfort zone to experience something new.
Jay's info is definitely rock solid. His book is chock full of a good variety that anyone can learn a thing or two for exploration.
Also, Paris' old school bistros and cafe's that are the stereotypical tourist draws (and hyped on TikTok/IG) tend to serve pretty mediocre coffee (historically pretty crappy actually), so Jay's coffee/cafe recs are gold! ☕ Thanks, Jay! 🙏
Well I am glad you are being honest about eating and moving to Paris. I feel that way about moving anywhere. However I do love good food and coming from a background where I had so many different choices of food, Paris is just another place to enjoy good food. I was always taught to do your research and visit places more then once. But its still nice to have someone on the ground who lives in that city to be honest about life in Paris, Merci
You're correct about the coffee: sometimes you have to go out of your way to get a good filter coffee. I didn't like the automatic espresso coffee you find in most places.
I'm all about starting with coffee and spiraling out from there.
3:04 The moment I leave Indian airspace is when I know spicy food becomes elusive.
😆🔥
Thanks for all your recommendations. My photo here is chilling at Maison Maison with a rose. A great choice for those who don't want to just plop down on the ground and picnic on the banks but still grabbing that feel. I've used many of your recommendations when in Paris and had the guts to day trip on the train based on the Reims video. Keep it coming you are the new version of Rick Steves!
Your guide has a lot of diverse food restaurants, personally i have a lot of diverse options where i live. I want French food while in Paris.
hahaha YES! When my friends come visiting Paris I always bring them to a proper specialty places!
I have been watching your subscribers count increasing every day. I am looking forward to seeing you pass 100k. Thank you for the daily content and keep up the great work. I have been to Paris 4 times for a total of only 30 +/- days and it is a fantastic city to explore. I look forward to my non-working years when I plan to explore France for the full 6 month visa and beyond. Merci beaucoup et bonne journey!
I think our likes and dislikes would be broadly similar, so I’m happy to take your recommendations. In general, understanding the background of a reviewer is helpful. Even for something as inconsequential as a movie review… There are a few reviewers I know whose interests are so different from my own that if I read movie review and they hate it, I know I’m likely to enjoy the show!
Well, your advice did work for me. Had a great time in Paris!
BTW Bobby for pizza is outstanding! A Sicilian and a Neapolitan were in the kitchen when I was there.
Cool video once again 😊. Good points you make on staying and how to finance it. Not many vloggers go down the financial road. Understandable due to privacy etc. But in fairness its one one of the key factors in moving or liv8ng😊.
Watched your guide before my trip to Paris and it helped a lot, I will say the coffee was mainly subpar outside of a few places.
Yeah you have to find the specialty cafés, for sure!
I prefer your advice. I think my biggest takeaway from watching you is that I don't have to have the "best" in Paris. I just need to enjoy where I am and what I'm eating and what I'm doing. And coffee. Okay, maybe I do need that to be the best.
So true!
Love your videos!!
Thank you!!
Hey hey! The food looked good. Being an Indian, I really struggle to find good taste here even in Gare du Nord. So mostly it's me cooking. Can you tell me what the name of the place is, please? Would so love to pay a visit!
Bonjour Jay. You have to remember that you can’t please everyone and it is up to us as visitors to do our due diligence before we leave home. Thanks for all of the information you have provided over the years in your videos and in your guide it has been valuable as part of the research we have done on our trips for the past 10 years. Everyone has a different audience and as an example someone who watches the Frenchies may not have the same take as people that watch you consistently. Keep doing what you’re doing. Merci 💙🤍❤️
Oh, sure. Tell me this three days before I fly out. There goes my itinerary. Haha. Just kidding. I for one will be hitting the tea shops more than the coffee shops. D'Orsey over Mona Lisa. I am also down for the international foods. Also I'm vegetarian and don't drink.
2:10 OOOOOOOH LOVE A NAAN AND RICE (separately of course)
Your advice is and always has been solid and reliable. It’s an honest opinion from someone who actually lives there! The only hope I have of moving to Paris now is a lottery win - enough said !
You've been pretty honest that you don't always have everything figured out all the time... but it does seem like you've figured a few things out, at least, such as good food and how to have awesome backdrops for your videos. ;-)
At least there's that! 🙏
What is the name of the Indian cuisine restaurant? Did I miss it somewhere?
I would like to know too. I did a rewind of that segment to make sure I didn’t miss anything. I bought Paris in my Pocket. I wonder if the locations are reserved only for Patreon members?
Same! I couldn’t catch it. @Jay help us out!
Il Brigante for pizza sometime, Jay!
🍕🍕🍕
Have you been to Gymkhana in London?
No? Might need to investigate
Turns out it's saved on my map, just don't think I've been yet haha
We have enjoyed one of the best (if not THE best) Indian meals ever there! I especially loved the value of their lunch menu. And, it's a Michelin star restaurant!!
Carry your own chilli flakes 😄
I thought about getting a flask and filling it with hot sauce 😆
You have plenty of good advice, especially for Paris noobs
Thanks =)
Wants spicy food and then went for the korma.... what?
Unrelated to the video, but would you ever consider growing out the hair and doing a comb over?Be even funnier if you did it and never acknowledged it in any of your vids.Comb over Jay would be one strange looking dude😂
Marseille for pizza in France.
Don't ever sell yourself short on thinking that your guide is not for everyone... Your guide is for everyone that wants to experience Paris. In my opinion. I would rather remember that great cup of coffee or that really good meal rather than if there were striped awnings and checker tablecloths and if the waiters were long black aprons, you know what I mean? That being said, if you're looking for somewhere to have a great meal That is French. You can always go to the Frenchies on RUclips and I know you know them. And I all forgive you this time for saying macaroon when it's clearly macaron... Keep up the great work!
thanks for thie Glenn!
Your guide isn't for everyone, but probably helpful for those without a clue who actually like everything you like. My coffee is Espresso, and they have that in every cafe. If you want Mexican food, move to Mexico.
I love how French people don’t eat spicy food…yet on every table in a pizza place has spicy oil for the pizza! Come and see us and I will make you pizza…and homemade pup treats.
Except that spicy oil is never actually spicy 😆
Totally unrelated but have you ever accidentally slammed your face on a camera?
I'm not a coffee drinker so 99% of your advice is irrelevant 😂😂
a lot of the coffeeshops I love make a mean hot chocolate!
