I still have this for my Dreamcast. I remember it being very hyped up back in the day.
I thought MSR was terrific at the time. Loved the irl maps and tracks. Used to drive past the place that I worked on one of the London Maps.

It's funny to hear someone talk about the San Francisco Rock/Jazz stations in this game positively at all. It's all about the ravey stuff on the London+Tokyo stations imo. Peak early 2000's vibes.
I had to laugh when I thought about putting the Bully Maguire quotes from Spiderman into the game:
" You're trash", "Still got the moves", " You want forgiveness? Get Religion"," Let's take on this"
I got this game coming in the mail. I’m looking forward to playing it. Best Christmas gift ever along with my Dreamcast.
It oozes atmosphere. And driving in Japan, London, and New York, knowing you are driving in the actual time of day adds something really special. It's a shame driving games have not used real time.
@@Relugus it does. The atmosphere strikes me as a unique blend of gran turismo, ridge racer type 4 with a hint of attitude.
What a game that was. 1999. I was 18 years old. I have never had as much fun with any racing game.
Some of you might remember the game Headhunter that came out for Dreamcast in 2000. The music was also composed by Richard Jacques. At one point there is a radio playing, and you hear Fallen Angel from MSR :)
Such a classy racer. Slick user interface, great design, and a sweet a.f soundtrack from R Jacques!

Still have this for Dreamcast,havent played it for like 20 years....used to love it,maybe i should try it or at least see if the disc still works
Why wouldn’t the disc still work if you haven’t used it in 20yrs? Did it work 20yrs ago when you played it last? If so it will still work. I have dvds and vhs cassettes from the 90s and they work and look just as they did the last time I used them. They’re not condoms, they don’t have expiration dates. Your old games will still work.😉
@@Loophole23742you are very wrong about this. Many aging discs are failing, they are basically rotting away.There are many factors contributing to it and some systems have a higher failure rate. I remember the gamecube discs are especially bad for this. Look it up

This game has always had a special place in my heart, its really hard to replay now though.
I tried 2 weeks ago and got annoyed by the music and my lack of a decent vga screen.
My 20 year old self preffered those tunes much more than I do.
I am thinking of trying again in a emulator and seeing what it looks like at 4x res etc 👍
The daylight simulation uses the Dreamcast clock and will always be pretty close to how it is in RL, and even reflects seasonal changes in the real world. The downside as you say is you have to adjust the DC clock, to get access to the special races.

It's a great game. Second only to Le Mans 24 hour on the DC racer podium imho.
La Mans is meh, Toyko Racing 2, Sega rally 2 and F355 are my favs

Dieses Spiel war damals im Februar 2001 mein erstes Dreamcast Spiel dass ich mit der Konsole zusammen gekauft habe. Es war fantastisch, ich habe es das erste Wochenende durchgehend gespielt. Aber es war vom Schwierigkeitsgrad wirklich schwer für mich. Zusammen mit dem Ubisoft Spiel Speed Devils eines meiner Favoriten unter den Rennspielen der Dreamcast.
There's an exploit in this game when you play a race type called hot lab I think is what it's called. It takes your best lap but if you have a good first lap on the second lap you can do tricks to earn kudos and turn around and go back the opposite direction toward the starting line and do it again repeatedly to boost your kudos.
This allows you to earn way more kudos than you would normally be able to earn unlocking a lot of the game earlier than you would normally be able to unlock races in the game. I actually recommend doing this because you get some breathing room and you're not just stuck to a linear progression of races. Just be warned that some of these races get really hard later on in the game!

I still have some of these banger tunes in my car... and have to restrain myself driving, to not have some of the custom messages seen here shouted at me from other road users...

Loved the Kudos system. You need to drift through the turns or you will lose to the AI. My only gripe is i t was waaay too dark.

This game has a special nostalgic part in my heart, reminding me of a period of time in my life as me an my friends were into cars and car culture in our late teens/early 20s, I tried giving it another go a couple of years ago for a trip down memory lane, the first time since the early 00s and it was so much more brutal then I remembered. Loved this game for the graphics, atmosphere and driving itself, but the rubber-banding is not getting nearly enough highlighting here. Return to the early races with the Skyline, drive perfectly but crash on the last corner and watch all the MX5s and Fiats which have somehow been on your bumper the whole way fly past you.
Being able to return to the early chapters and easily beat everyone should be the reward for progressing further into the game.

Sadly, no.
The game kinda needs proper balancing, they want overboard with kudos system to be honest and the game is too dark but the game has widescreen feature you can enable it from cheats.
Wow, I haven't played it for decades now, didn't remember the customizable messages ! Thanks, I laughed hard. Oh and BTW PGR2 is the best of the series.

Wow this takes me back! Between this and Wipeout I think are the best racing games. I spent so many hours in my college days playing these games
Graphicaly stunning and really pushed the boundaries at the time; too many comments, plus the video creator, seemingly judging it on 2020s standards. This is barely 5 years after the era of 2D platformers.
Imagine someone customizing those quotes to say things that are racist, homo/hetero/transphobic, or edgy/offensive. I'm surprised the devs never thought this through for an E-rated title. It would've been M-rated immediately from that.

Man I so want to play this game as it looks fun, I remember pgr1 being awesome and the second game being a disappointment back then. Also it's the same scenario with Need for speed high stakes on Playstation All over again, You have to own a car before you race, as there is no Freeplay mode where you can freely choose any car and track and just race and enjoy the games unique production values, I really don't like that.
Also PGR 1 and 2 could have been ported over to Microsoft windows, I believed it would have done well on those PC aside than Xbox just for deep preservation.
I used a cheat code on the tail end of the championship mode because grinding became too tedious for the last 2 cars that you can't even upgrade.

Loved the overall vibe and the graphics but hated the kudos system. It was so difficult to progress and it made me quit eventually because I was fed up playing the same tracks over and over again without accessing anything new.
Way t o Damn Hard, in Street Racing the Training level is next to impossible to get the target rime because if you go as fast as you can you run into everything and get penalized but if you don't just floor it you can't beat the target time.
There is a cheat where you can unlock all tracks by holding the start button during the introduction sequence but what is the introduction sequence ? If you hit the start button during the video it aborts the video and brings up that don't try this at home screen and then eventually after waiting for all the logo screens to go by you can finally get to the start game screen but all the tracks are not available. It;s annoying to make a game so damn hard that even on the beginner levels you have to be a super skilled video game wiz. Also it's annoying how every time you start a game it asks you to adjust the time zone even after you save a game and if you don't select the correct time zone you can't go back and change it in options and have to power off or reset the Dreamcast to change the time zone. It's also annoying that you have to create a profile even if you want to just do a time attack or quick race. Also it's annoying how you can't change the settings of your car after you win and register it so if you want to change the color, roof, window style and even the name on the license plate you can't do it after you win a car and save it. The Music gets annoyingly repetitive.

I really despised the Kudos system in this game, the AI, and the restrictive garage system. The Kudos system, pretty much everything else, was much more improved and balanced in the PGR titles.
I wish my 10-year old brain knew about that hot-lap exploit 😅

Would it be a bad idea to play this game if the watch battery in your Dreamcast is dead?
the console keeps the time as long as it's still plugged in
and even if you unplug it, before launching any game the console will ask for the current time and date, so you're good
I know this is kinda old but for everyone who's willing to read this, the console keeps its date-time through the battery in the VMU. I know that's strange since the console has a lithium battery and vmus don't really need batteries to keep save files, but sega decided that you either keep your VMU with a battery or you need to reset date everytime you unplug the console.

Just another reason to hate Activision for closing down Bizarre Creations. Such a shame, I still love Blur and always wanted to play PGR.
I really don't like how Forza is the be all an end all racing game franchise of today, I really miss the likes of Midnight Club and Project Gotham.
As much as I like forza, I miss games like blur, pure, split second, and project gotham.
