They didn't, Justin was sick for a while and he never reached out for help because he thought he didn't deserve it. True there is treatments, but you have to seek it first before it is too late. Also, he was high risk for HIV since he used needles and the stuff he had to do as a kid for money

The writers could have easily adjusted the storyline to show Justin living with HIV and getting the proper treatment for it instead of feeding into the myth that being diagnosed with HIV is an automatic death sentence just for shock value. Yes, people still die from it but with the proper treatment most people can still live their lives. HIV isn't represented all that often in the media so when it is, it's important to use the opportunity to help educate people not just use it as a plot device for shock value. They could have revealed that Justin had been diagnosed with HIV earlier in the season and made this an actual plot line instead of throwing it in and killing him off at the last minute.

You know what. They could of killed Clay off like mid season. Then switch the main character to Justin. The rest of the season is showing the effects of his death, and the ramifications of him not being there to get everyone out of trouble. Justin as the main loses his brother and sees the effects on clay's family and friends. This causes Justin to relapse. Justin gets the HIV diagnosis, that gives him a wake up call, maybe he is visited by clay's ghost. They have a sweet bro talk. In the end he recovers and has HIV but learns to live with it and take better care of himself. It ends with him going to college
Honestly the only part of the last season I liked was Justins death. It was so sad and left field and I think they could have handled it better, but when I saw that it made perfect sense. Since like season one (I think this was season one) I called it that he was going to become a sex worker when he was living on the streets. Sadly this is the reality for a lot of drug addicted street kids. So his being positive and untreated made sense. Where it didn’t make sense is that any rehab facility knowing his background would have wanted to test him for hiv. But his death proves a serious societal issue. Class bias. All of the kids from upper middle class families that managed to not die suffered no consequences for their actions and got to go to great universities and move on with their lives. This show actually addressed a lot of these topics and that was the high point of the show for me. Tony is a broke Latino that has to use his physicality to be able to get into college which is a reality for some people with his upbringing. Sheri was incarcerated for an accident that led to the death of others, mean while Alex gets off scot free for a legit murder. Class and racial dynamics were written into the script but it was poorly done. However back to Justin. His death was the only thing that made any bit of sense to me in the last season.

Nerdy Theatre Person that’s what I’m saying. You don’t just wake up with AIDS one day and die. You have to be infected with HIV first and even that can take years to show symptoms. Magic Johnson has been HIV positive since 1991 and is still alive and well because there’s plenty of treatment for it. To think that an 18 year old who had only been using drugs for like what, a year? to die of AIDS is basically impossible. They could’ve just given him HEP C which is way more common amongst drug users but it doesn’t kill you.

What I hated the most this season was that Clay was having hallucinations and going through disassociation yet they painted it as “anxiety and depression”

I mean you COULD have a hallucination or delirious ideas with depression (Sever depressive episode with psychotic symptoms) or anxiety (PTSD) but they are treated different (with meds) and psychotherapy alone doesn't do it (this therapy is the best treatment to regular depression and anxiety). It's not normal to hallucinate, lol, it should be treated preferably in a mental institution until they no longer are a threat to their own-selves. ESPECIALLY if that individual had a previous story of escaping a mental facility.
i’m not gonna lie. i feel like the show gave him room to actually showcase his ability because clay always got the emotional and intense scenes. this show just gave dylan room to shine and i appreciate that because it made people appreciate his acting more

Contrary to popular opinion, I actually did like the first two seasons. Yes, there were many aspects about the show that weren't great, but the story actually felt realistic, captivating and somewhat well-written, if a bit flat and problematic at times, and I LOVE most of the characters, which is really why I kept watching. Which is also why it's so frustrating that after having to deal with the last two seasons' bullshit, we got....that. anyways great video!! you literally said everything I wanted to say honestly.

She is the reason all of these things happened. You can’t just remove the character that unveiled the story to make a completely different season focusing the antagonist without having her. Like, idk it just felt so... dragged on and it made me mad. They could’ve ended with season 2, concluding with the group hug in the school dance, meaning that they can’t change the past but they all learned from their mistakes and will be bonded by that experience for life. Orca Lover yeah their portrayal of mental health was not great I will agree, but like I said, it did make up for it with other story elements and it did bring some important topics to the table. it just had no idea on what to do with them. had it concluded on Season 2, it would've been a very flawed, but fine show. but the more it went, the worse it did at portraying mental health. I just hope that the general public who doesn't think too hard about what they watch could atleast take something good away from it in the end, even if the message is extremely rough around the edges
I cried when Justin died. Out of all of the characters that deserved a happy ending, it was him. He even got into college! They should have just killed Ani or Zack off. They were both kinda useless. Except a couple of scenes for Zack. But these last two seasons were trash.
I honestly would have liked her to stay on the show and randomly pop up when the other characters try to drag her back into their drama, she’s like Nope! And then show up at the end of the last episode for the “reunion.”

For anyone coming back to this comment, clay’s drug test came back positive from the cookies/snacks Charlie made at the senior camping trip that he offered to Clay. This is revealed that they were edibles after giving the same cookies to Alex when Charlie and Alex got high watching that movie.
They only did it for shock value cause they said they never planned for Justin dying this season they decided to kill someone off and chose Justin cause they knew it would have an impact. And Brandon and Dylan agreed with it

Why lol Charlie is a decent character, but unnecessary and I wouldn't have minded him being gone to give more room to flesh out some other stories. And they're so weird together. With Alex they just messed by focusing on his sexuality rather than wrapping up the fact that he has to deal with the guilt of killing a person and his TBI.

Personally, I liked this last season WAY more than the 3rd. Granted, I didn't like it, but I actually thought there were some genuinely good moments (the entire episode with the lockdown). Also, at least this season didn't humanize the rapists. But still, the depiction of Clay's mental illness's is comically tone-deaf. This show is still an embarrassment.

I personally liked how they tried to “normalize” Bryce because it really does show how the rapist are humans. That they can do these evil things, but kiss there mom on the cheek when they get home. It shows are truly careful you have to be. Cause everyone has the potential to be a monster, but monsters don’t always have messed up childhoods. Some of them are our friend, are family. People who we would never think can do such a thing.
The problem is that it came out of nowhere. People like Bryce don’t rape for pleasure. They do it for control and power. Otherwise they wouldn’t do it. They know it’s wrong, but choose to do wrong. He literally got hard thinking about Hannah’s assault. He did it to DOZENS (his words) of other girls and took pictures of them naked. He proudly told his mom what he did in season 2. I just heard about it the other day and decided to watch it. I really liked it, but at the beginning some of the characters seemed a bit stereotypical. I'm glad I watched 2 episodes before deciding if I was going to continue. The characters became a lot more relatable, although Devi got on my nerves on several occasions... Although one could say that's actually a good thing.

ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH YOU. Like???? I mean you COULD have a hallucination or delirious ideas with depression (Sever depressive episode with psychotic symptoms) or anxiety (PTSD) but they are treated different (with meds) and psychotherapy alone doesn't do it (this therapy is the best treatment to regular depression and anxiety). It's not normal to hallucinate, lol, it should be treated preferably in a mental institution until they no longer are a threat to their own-selves. ESPECIALLY if that individual had a previous story of escaping a mental facility.

Contrary to popular opinion, I actually did like the first two seasons. Yes, there were many aspects about the show that weren't great, but the story actually felt realistic, captivating and somewhat well-written, if a bit flat and problematic at times, and I LOVE most of the characters, which is really why I kept watching. Which is also why it's so frustrating that after having to deal with the last two seasons' bullshit, we got....that.

ur internet mom ash we all know that the series would be screwed when they closed Hannah’s story to say they would continue the story. Like, Hannah IS 13 Reasons Why. She is the reason all of these things happened. You can’t just remove the character that unveiled the story to make a completely different season focusing the antagonist without having her. Like, idk it just felt so... dragged on and it made me mad. They could’ve ended with season 2, concluding with the group hug in the school dance, meaning that they can’t change the past but they all learned from their mistakes and will be bonded by that experience for life. But oh well, we got something else. Awesome. Btw sorry if this is a lot, i love you 🤣😘

Orca Lover yeah their portrayal of mental health was not great I will agree, but like I said, it did make up for it with other story elements and it did bring some important topics to the table. it just had no idea on what to do with them. had it concluded on Season 2, it would've been a very flawed, but fine show. but the more it went, the worse it did at portraying mental health. I just hope that the general public who doesn't think too hard about what they watch could atleast take something good away from it in the end, even if the message is extremely rough around the edges

But they got Clay talking to himself in a field, shitting himself to escape a mental hospital, blowing up his principal's car, nearly killing everyone in the woods on a school feild trip, sneaking into school at night to vandalize it, hallucinating, blacking out... like damn, nobody can see or hear this dude talking to himself?! why is nobody trying to help him?

Personally, I liked this last season WAY more than the 3rd. Granted, I didn't like it, but I actually thought there were some genuinely good moments (the entire episode with the lockdown). Also, at least this season didn't humanize the rapists.
But still, the depiction of Clay's mental illness's is comically tone-deaf.

I personally liked how they tried to “normalize” Bryce because it really does show how the rapist are humans. That they can do these evil things, but kiss there mom on the cheek when they get home. It shows are truly careful you have to be. Cause everyone has the potential to be a monster, but monsters don’t always have messed up childhoods. Some of them are our friend, are family. People who we would never think can do such a thing.
The problem is that it came out of nowhere. People like Bryce don’t rape for pleasure. They do it for control and power. Otherwise they wouldn’t do it. They know it’s wrong, but choose to do wrong. He literally got hard thinking about Hannah’s assault. He did it to DOZENS (his words) of other girls and took pictures of them naked. He proudly told his mom what he did in season 2. The truth is that it can be anyone, but Bryce not a monster? Please. That’s exactly why victims in real life don’t come forward because apologists come out and somehow the abuser and what they feel is more important than the survivor.
