"The only person I ever hated was Ingemar Johansson." --Floyd Patterson in his biography They later became friends, and Floyd pulled him out of a depression when Ingo's drinking had gotten on top of him. They ran a marathon together.
@Floyd PattersonII Wow thanks for sharing all that, that’s incredible. Do you know If Floyd and Ingo ever met in Sweden or Europe after they formed a friendship?
People forget what an incredible athlete Patterson was - that Gazelle Punch could knock out a horse, and good lord he's gotta be one of the 3 fastest heavyweights ever.
Best heavyweight boxers (not necessarily fighters): Jim Corbett, Gene Tunney, Floyd Patterson, and Cassius Clay.: Someday, we may put the Gypsy King intuit category.
PS also, when a guy gets knocked down to their knees at then falls face first after that....... Again they are finished. And this fighter fell three times in one knockdown. Good trilogy and much respect to both late Champions.
rmy I don't know where you get your info and footage but a Jake LaMotta career recap on the way you did gollatta's would be awesome. it would be the only one of its sort on LaMotta. everyone who searched him would only find your video.
Man I love your videos! Thanks for making them. Also, any chance you could do a retrospective on British favourite Frank Bruno? I know he doesn't mean to much to you folks across the pond, but he is perhaps the most beloved fighter of the past 40 years over here. Kind regards
Great work Rummy and thank you for these awesome videos! Professional quality Would love to see you create a segment on Louis vs Conn some day, I'm sure there's hundreds of requests
Hallå Kalle , helt riktigt, jag träffade Ingo när jag var liten grabb/tonåring på 90 och kommer ihåg att jag fick skaka Ingemars hand( hans skakade nog mer än min tyvärr) ha'de gött.
I love both of these boxers. At the time of the first fight I was a foetus. Somewhere in future parallel universe I was to become Londons answer to the big Swede. I s*** out and became a Financial Advisor. What I see here was a battle between one great boxer with a great punch against a good boxer with a Nordic Sledgehammer.
@@caznrodbut he would've lost to Liston horribly and Johansson also had a shot at beating Marciano Liston destroys Johansson too Ali of 1963-1964 beats Johansson
Yes. Good eye!! Such a different time. I do like the new safety protocols but I still revere men like Floyd and Ingo who would die in the ring if they had to. Something menacing and poetic about that. But, we are a civil society and it is good we don't allow fighters to be decked 7 times and still continue. When the fight is won it's won. Even today I think that Shannon Briggs should have been stopped vs Vitali klitchko even though he didn't hit the canvas. The fight was won. It wouldn't take from the heart of Briggs had they stopped it in the 10th when it was clear he couldn't win the fight and wasn't fighting back
The referee should have made sure Patterson was ready to fight. Patterson got some defense training from Archie Moore and put on 8 lean lbs and another 4lb for the rubber match. So 182lb 190lb and 194lb.T hat extra lean mass added to his power and resistance.
To me Patterson should have had the bout stopped when he was in another world after 1st knockdown of 1st fight. He wasn’t even aware. He was in another world. The affects of that knockdown meant he was a sitting duck.
They took years off each other's lives with those 3 fights but the two best heavyweights of that time were fighting elsewhere Cleveland Williams and Sonny Liston would've destroyed these two
I loved Floyd, totally fearless. After his fights with Johansson, he lost his killer instinct. In the second fight, Johansson's left foot is twitching uncontrollably as he lies on the deck. This reminds me of Bears's fight with Campbell. Campbell died, and Max never again had the same killer instinct.
Ref in first fight (Ruby Goldstein) was the one who failed miserably in Griffith-Paret III. Any reasonable boxing official who saw him allow Patterson to continue after first knockdown should have been banned him from boxing right then.
Tyson was, of course, trained by D'Amato. He was a combination of Patterson and Dempsey. Tyson, however, didn't have their self discipline. (biting off an ear is not cool.)
The 1st fight was clearly Norton's, I feel. Especially cuz of how well he avoided Ali's jabs, as well as Ali slowing down after getting his jaw broken.
@@lordtoffington3664 It's how it was back then, and IMO how it should be. Always give a champ the chance to get back up (unless under VERY SEVERE circumstances)
We all know it was clear that Ingo was quick counted. They wanted the title back in the States. Liston would put an end to these Junior Varsity pretenders by B slapping Patterson into palookaville.

@mcskillet7106 they ran a marathon together in Sweden
there would be a congressional hearing if there were 7 knockdowns in a round nowadays
Yes it should have been stopped. Probably took years off of his life.
Pattersons corner lol were if he dies he dies 😂 for real
The third fight was like the first two fights put together. Each fighter had their moments.
Their trilogy isn't overlooked by true boxing fans though. This still holds up to great brawls past and present. 3 fights . 13 rounds 14 knock downs.
14 rounds
I remember Knockout Kings on the ps1, featured this rivalry. Rummy you're putting that work in, God bless you sir

When the leg quivers like Johansson's did there's no need in counting Mr. Mercante Sr. Most fighters are done for the night then.
Give ref credit he did stop the fight when ingo still got to his feet.
Between Joe Frazier(in his bouts with Foreman) and Patterson these guys at this time were hard hard men.
even as Swede I've never seen this covered in this much detail. as always, great upload and analysis
did my favorite trilogy in Boxing history JUSTICE, I love you Rummy! #GoIngoGo!🇸🇪
PS also, when a guy gets knocked down to their knees at then falls face first after that....... Again they are finished. And this fighter fell three times in one knockdown. Good trilogy and much respect to both late Champions.
Some crazy refs back in the days. Thanks for the content.
But they had good footwork
high quality video ,the best i have seen from these fights thanks
Great video. Looking forward to the next one
I love your videos man, you got good commentary and a good voice to go with it
I was 8 years old listening to 1st fight on radio with my grandmother who was related to ingo, Swedish pandemonium when ingo won
Great vid, thanks Rummy, I knew very little about this trilogy fight so this was a very good watch indeed.
Patterson got his bell rung and thought the round was over.
No even worse than that bro thought he knocked down Johansson that's why he went to the corner
Great editing and commentary. Thanks
rmy

WHAT A FIGHT!!!!!!!! THIS IS WHEN FIGHTERS FOUGHT!!!!!! AMAZING TRILOGY,,,,, GREAT VIDEO RUMMY, WOW!!!!!
Best sport channel, man!! Thanx!!
Greetings from Sweden
Love these vids
I always liked Floyd's Paterson one of my favorites
awesome video man
This has been up for almost a year now and yet it has no dislikes!!! That's pretty impressive!!!

Excellent analysis. Can't wait to see your recap on Canelo-GGG.
Good fight thanks
Ingemar was a 1960s version of Vitali Klitschko.
Great work Rummy and thank you for these awesome videos! Professional quality
Would love to see you create a segment on Louis vs Conn some day, I'm sure there's hundreds of requests
best videos
"hammer of thor"......wicked :O
The first fight should have been stopped earlier in the second round
Different time can't judge by today's standards. Even Floyd Patterson would tell you he would have rather continued
The great thing about Rummy's commentaries, he just states the facts of the fights. He leaves out opinions and politics.
This trilogy is examined in depth in the book "The Sweet Science " by AJ Liebling.
would you to do a breakdown of Herol Bomber Graham
They later became close friends and visited each other once a year in Sweden and USA respectivly until they were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

back then you practically could kill your opponent and the ref still wouldnt stop it
I absolutely love the music you play during your videos
patterson's leaping left hooks remind me of Tyson's hooks...
Same coach
Ingo underrated
Glad they revised the rules since then. Hitting someone when they're dazed and walking away is really bad.
This is Rummys first championship profile. Johansson was 1-2 in title fights all shown here.
If Floyd’s head was not firmly attached that first right would gave knocked it off . What a punch straight on
Imagine Rocky fighting Floyd Patterson.
His Susie Q against Floyd's chin.
Indeed, another interesting match-up is Ingemar vs Liston, I think the Hammer would break his jaw again
i thought the same... Rocky would have probably won...
Mystic Wizard Rocky avoided Patterson he was genuinely worried about Patterson hand speed.
@@clubberlang589 he still would have won either way
@@caznrodbut he would've lost to Liston horribly and Johansson also had a shot at beating Marciano Liston destroys Johansson too
Ali of 1963-1964 beats Johansson
They don't make chins like they used to ha.
Really rummy your favorite is hammer of thor mine is ingo's bingo
Came here after the Fury-Wilder trilogy
I like the way Patterson's corner man appears to query the referee's decision to stop the first fight after Floyd had gone down for the 7th time.
Yes. Darin Loveland It was called going out on your shield
Ingerman in the first fight hit Patterson at the back of the head many times. He was a dirty fighter
The first knockdown was on the chin, Patterson was done after that first knockdown
The referee should have made sure Patterson was ready to fight. Patterson got some defense training from Archie Moore and put on 8 lean lbs and another 4lb for the rubber match. So 182lb 190lb and 194lb.T hat extra lean mass added to his power and resistance.
ingo on the other hand put on 12lb soft lb for the rubber fight from 196lb to 206lb .Which made sluggish
To me Patterson should have had the bout stopped when he was in another world after 1st knockdown of 1st fight. He wasn’t even aware. He was in another world. The affects of that knockdown meant he was a sitting duck.
Fred Smith back then fighters fought with limited fat to weight ratio. Cleveland Williams was 212 lbs at his lightest but was a 6 foot monster.
Patterson’s chin became a lot more durable in the second and third fight.
7 knockdowns is ridiculous. You can have brain damage after one.
And Patterson did get it
They took years off each other's lives with those 3 fights but the two best heavyweights of that time were fighting elsewhere Cleveland Williams and Sonny Liston would've destroyed these two

See D'Amato's hand... Tyson was better version of Patterson ;)
Tyson was, of course, trained by D'Amato. He was a combination of Patterson and Dempsey. Tyson, however, didn't have their self discipline. (biting off an ear is not cool.)
At 7:54, did Ingemar get a seizure?
Damn, sure seemed so. I think Patterson was afraid he killed the poor guy. Notice how he runs across the ring to see if Ingemar is okay?
Sam Topeka this is why Patterson deserved his record and achievement in the ring.
felt like Rocky III with Floyd as rocky and Ingemar as clubber lang
Nathan Rich you could easily be right there. But they failed to have a return bout after Rocky took it back in his re-match.
I wonder how bad their brains were scrambled when they were done.
It was very bad Azlheimers and Dementia knocked them both out
imagine scoring round 3 like 2-10
The most overlooked trilogy is Ali-Norton. All three fights could have gone either way
The 1st fight was clearly Norton's, I feel. Especially cuz of how well he avoided Ali's jabs, as well as Ali slowing down after getting his jaw broken.
Most agree Norton won the 1st and 3rd
What a terrible ref.
What a terrible ref in the first fight.
@@lordtoffington3664 It's how it was back then, and IMO how it should be. Always give a champ the chance to get back up (unless under VERY SEVERE circumstances)
Ingo liked his booze
incompetent ref [paid off?]
We all know it was clear that Ingo was quick counted. They wanted the title back in the States. Liston would put an end to these Junior Varsity pretenders by B slapping Patterson into palookaville.
Back then the referees were a joke
Ingemar Johansson is still the last White boxer who won the world title.
So?
what a bout the klitschkos and fury
