Had Archie Moore been 30 yrs old, he would've beaten Rocky that night. This is a man who defended his Light HW title for 10 straight years.... most of those defenses were in his 40's too.
He was also funny outside the ring. His mother said that he was born 3 years earlier than he said. His explanation was that he "must have been 3 years old when he was born". I believe he had 195 fights.
Words alone can't fully describe how much I appreciate your insight on boxing and these legendary fights... please do a top 10 of your favorite bouts from the 60's, 70's, 80's, & 90's.
Excellent list! I would perhaps add one of the Pep vs. Sadler fights. I think their first encounter was in the late 40s but the other two fights were in the 50s. Two very skillful boxers who both fought pretty dirty against eachother. Keep up the great work!
the modern era of mutants can hardly compare to the brawls of yesteryear's warriors. their skill, class, and heart are unmatched. much higher quality fights

The modern guys can’t trade shots like that... not if they want to live to see the next day. The old guys really went at it and they were highly polished too.
Moore No.1, thank you. I watched that fight with my Dad and cried as Moore, 46 was bein mauled by Durelle, but then thoroughly enjoyed the comeback by Moore. Like you stated truly inspirational. Thank you, I always believed that was the greatest ever with lots and mean lots of action. Devestating punches by both fighters. David

Durelle looked indestructible and unstoppable early, but Moore's comeback exemplifies the "Old Mongoose" moniker. He called his defensive mode "escapology", and used it until he uncovered Durelle's flaws.
Considering the long, long length of his career, including how very old he was when he was a top rank boxer, how durable he was & how well-spoken he was after his career, I believe the great Archie Moore was the most remarkable athlete of all time & a man of high achievement & simply more durable than any other person I know of.
great video! I personally would have included Charles vs Marciano 1 instead of their second fight, Basilio vs Fullmer 1 and Basilio vs DeMarco 2 instead of Marciano vs LaStarza and maybe one of Lamotta's fights, and would have ranked the two Basilio vs Robinson fights higher I would like to see a similar video for other decades. and a follow up video of another top 10 boxing matches from such an action packed decade (which would include Moore vs Johnson, Basilio vs DeMarco 1, Basilio vs Saxton 2, Basilio vs Kid Gavilan, Kid Gavilan vs Olson, Robinson vs Graziano and the other matches i mentioned)
Hello Rummy's Corner. I would like to introduce myself to you. I'm a huge Boxing Fan of old school Boxing and can honestly say that I have enjoyed watching your videos. I have a channel of my own and admire your boxing series. Keep up the good work. Two fights that I can think of from the 1950s are Beau Jack vs Ike Williams Joe Louis vs Rocky Marciano. Carmen basilio vs Tony Demarco. 1&2
Great list. My dad told me about that fight between Moore and Yvonne with great awe and admireation. he said it was one of the greatest battles he ever saw!
Jersey Joe still holds the record for being the oldest man to win the UNDISPUTED heavyweight title. George Foreman only won a VERSION of the heavyweight titles. See the difference ? Therefore Jersey Joe Walcott's record has yet to be broken.
@@aduarte8057 actually he's right. Jersey Joe was undisputed while George only had the WBA and IBF titles. So, yeah Jersey Joe's record is still intact
Great list as always. Way too many fights in that decade to be picky about - so many Marciano fights and Ezzard vs Jersey Joe brawls and full-on fisticuffs with Tony Two-Ton fights and LaMotta fights and guys who's chins made for the most unreal slugfests. Also, great voice Rummy! You already sound like a classic and you are obviously a student of the sport. We need more guys like you keeping the oral tradition of this great sport alive and well and true. Also, great idea to do all decades. The more the better from this channel.
Against La Starza, Rocky had a lot of trouble getting inside to inflict the damage he wanted to. His trainer told him "if you can't find the mark, hit him with everything you've got on his arms and they will come down, leaving you with the opening you need.". When Rocky followed his advice, Roland started having huge bruises on his biceps, shoulders, etc. Of course, his hands came down and this led Marciano to the win. In another bout you mentioned, The Brockton Blockbuster's nose was hanging off his face and that's where he moved into overdrive to win that fight. Those were the good old days!
I think Rocky's nose was split in the Ezzard Charles II fight, who was arguably the toughest opponent of his career besides Jersey Joe. Apparently Marciano's corner held Rocky's nose together with some kind of toxic material that could have killed him had it not been removed in time.
Rummy you've got the absolute perfect voice for this. It's like, with that voice - what else WERE you supposed to do other than commentate boxing videos?
+Oliver viskovich-quinn Why even compare Ali's boxing skills to flat footed brawlers like Marciano and Frazier? Ali fought tall, even off the ropes. He would circle his opponents up on his toes lining up straight shots off his jab, and if he was pressed on the ropes he would lean back forcing you to throw to his body.
Because most heavyweights are 6'4 plus why would they crouch down when they can use their height. AJ used to be a big fan of Mike Tyson and when he first got into gym he was fighting crouched down peek a book style but the trainers made him realise your style is determined on your body. It wouldn't make sense for most heavyweights of today to crouch.
Oliver viskovich-quinn Personally I think it’s due to height. After the 50s the heavyweight division was just bigger. Guys like Ali, Holmes, Lewis, The Klit brothers etc were all well above 6 foot and had no reason to crouch. Smaller guys like Marciano, Frazier, and Tyson crouched to make themselves a smaller target and harder to hit for guys larger then them. It can be hard for taller guys to punch down effectively to hit shorter guys.
Really enjoyed the video. Great clips of great old fights. Excellent narration. Thanks. Growing up in the 60's, adults my parents age would always talk about Rocky Marciano and I just kind of scoffed at them because I was ignorant and didn't know any better. Now I know better. Short arms, short in stature, clumsy, awkward; but he was a machine who never stopped coming, never stopped punching, and had dynamite in both fists. 49-0 as Heavyweight Champion in the 50's pretty much says it all.

0:32 Of La Starza's 3 losses, one was the close split decision against Marciano before this rematch, and the other 2 were to people he already beaten in rematches just before this one. That's a really impressive record considering this. Rocky damaged La Starza so badly here that he needed surgery on both arms. La Starza later said Marciano improved "5,000%" from their first fight.
Love how people dismiss Marciano because supposedly all his fights were against post-prime fighters. Meanwhile people don’t take into account this guy has the shortest reach of HWs at the time ... even ever I think. And then furthermore, many people see Mike Tyson as the GOAT of HW yet many of his wins were post-prime contenders/champions.
