Lyle didn't turn pro till he was 30 as he was locked up for second degree murder. He found boxing in prison losing his first bout then never lost again whilst behind bars. Lyle was paroled and turned his life around with boxing. Lyle fought in arguably the Golden age of Heavyweight boxing and was more than a handful for all of them who shared a ring with him.

The most two-sided battle of heavyweights in recent memory was the George Foreman-Ron Lyle heavyweight set-to. The scheduled 12-round heavyweight elimination contest was reminiscent of a battle between two bull moose locked in battle, butting heads to protect their turf. A classic exhibition of the manly art of self-defense, it was not. It fell somewhere in between the manly art of self-destruction and a down-and-out bar fight, tempered in part by a hint of something right out of an old Laurel and Hardy film clip. It was, in short, a marvelous mélange of mayhem, with Foreman and Lyle playing it to the hilt, turning it from a comedic sketch into a war -- a war in which neither side was seeking survivors. The two combatants met in the center of the ring, both spent from their efforts and their pounding, both of and to each other, and commenced pummeling one another. A left hook drove Lyle's mouthpiece out of his mouth. Thirty seconds later, a barrage of blows from Foreman caught Lyle in his corner. Lyle seemed about to pitch forward on his face. When a man lands on his face, he hardly ever gets up. Lyle didn't and it was over at 2:28 of the fifth. George's opponent was the sinister-looking Lyle. Lyle, by his own admission, had been to "hell and back". "It was definitely the toughest fight I ever had," Foreman said after the fight.
Yes, what a fight. Action all the way, you dont get many like these two any more. Apart from a brief few years of Mike Tyson at his peak, this must've been by far the best era ever for heavyweights I think.
Agree. When he lost to Ali, it wasn't to boxing but ring strategy. Foreman's crew agreed to those lose ropes. Well done Bummy, quality bitta work. The Frazier fight Two undefeated Olympic Heavyweight Champions. Frazier the conqueror of an undefeated Ali. Possibly THE highest profile fight in HW history n Big George made it look like a walk in the park. #BigGeorge #TheWreckingMachine #Legend
Nice video, editing was spot on except for the Moorer fight. Foreman landed a number of blows in the tenth, mostly heavy lefts, that had Moorer buzzed before the kayo. Also some memorable shots by both in round 8. I would put the Cooney win above Frazier 2, but kudos for recognizing that and showing that knockout as well.
I remember watching the fight and when Moorer kept dropping his hands to his chest I kept saying "All it takes is one shot..." George kind of loosened him up and then dropped him with a casual right. Before than Moorer was dancing and winning every round. He got way too cocky. Next thing you know a 45 year old has made the greatest comeback in sports history (Yes better than Tiger).
You know. I always thought that down goes Frazier was during an Ali fight. Once I started actually following the sport I realized it was from a foreman fight.
Great summary video, Rummy! George is probably my favourite heavyweight of all-time! He's generally regarded in the top 5 of most lists of heavyweights. To imagine he won it twice ... twenty years apart as almost a 46 year old ... incredible! .... Thank God for the Preaching Boxer!
Apparently George made more money out of the grill than he ever made in boxing. That's insane. Obviously the grill only sold so well because of his boxing reputation though.
Magic as always Rummy, love your work. Never ranked your suggestions before but here are mine for those 1-5 fights. 1. George v Michael - How does an old man do that? Moorer was a little HW but still a good puncher, as proved numerous times. Maybe not the chin to face a formidable person as Foreman? 2. George v Joe I - The destructive power of Foreman was amazing, to land shots that would have dropped an elephant was also a credit to Frazier. Foreman at his best. 3. George v Ken - What an exhibition of power. Norton was a technical fighter who could punch hard, though here not hard enough. For Norton not to continue proved Foreman's power in the fight. 4. George v Ron - All you can say is what a fight! No strategy, just in the trenches going hard. Have watched that fight so many times and it still gives me goose bumps! 5. George v Joe II - Frazier was on the downward slide but still a big scalp. Foreman took the opportunity and showed again his power and control.
Moorer just had bad tactics and stood in front of Foreman the last few rounds, got complacent. Foreman claims this is because he hussled him by throwing light for most of the fight to trick him into believing his power had gone, which is probably largely BS. But Foreman certainly paced himself a lot better than he did when he was younger. It doesn't matter who you are or how old Foreman is, you can't stand in front of him. He's the biggest puncher in boxing history and can kill you with one punch.
I watched that Moorer knockout as a 10 year old kid and I remember the sound the huge right made on the TV speaker had me cringe with fear for nights.😁😁😁
Fraser’s style was a perfect match for Forman. But I loved that fight with Lyle. One of the epic heavyweight slug fests of all time. All boxing skill to the sideline. Just a brutal display of bone crush power. Forman showed a real heart in that contest getting up off the canvas several times to score a massive victory against a real slugger. Would loved to have seen him and Shavers get it on. Too bad that match never happened, it would have been a real slugging contest.
Shavers did not have the chin for it...he was knocked out by Lyles and that set up the Foreman vs Lyle's fight. If Shavers was good enough... he should have beat Lyles.
Not only the style but Frazier also started fight slow, while Foreman knocked most out in the first few rounds. It was recipe for disaster for Frazier.
George Foreman's style was made to defeat Joe Frasier. Swinging hooks from the hip & upper cuts, perfect for taking out a ducking & weaving shorter boxer looking to come forward to the inside. Also why he would probably have beaten Mike Tyson.
Not to mention Foreman started fast and came out blazing while Frazier usually needed a couple of rounds (against top notch competition, anyway) before he really found his rhythm. Put it all together and Foreman is always going to be a complete stylistic nightmare for Frazier.
@@oblivionnpc8688 Mike had the opportunity to fight Foreman after buster douglas but declined. I don't blame the guy to be honest, it would have been a stylistic mismatch
George Foreman foi um dos lutadores peso pesado mais forte do mundo. Um grande pugilista guerreiro campeão. Parabéns Foreman, você é um verdadeiro campeão.
I had the opportunity of meeting George foreman personally at Clearfield Utah job corps center. I referred to him as champ told him do you things and he went on about doing his thing. I look at George Foreman as heavenly fathers inspiration to mankind!
I love the clip with Foreman hitting the bag with Dick Sadler holding it. Sadler is getting rocked by him. He has to be one of the best punchers of all time! He’s a legend through and through.
The Foreman vs Lyle fight was amazing. It was almost like a fight from a Rocky movie. Two guys just slugging it out. The full fight is available on RUclips. Highly recommended for any boxing fan.
Thanks Rummy! I love watching the stoicism of young Foreman - such brutal power, such little emotion. A young Foreman vs a peak Wilder would be an awesome fantasy match - I'd pick Foreman by late KO after getting off the canvas twice.
You are overestimating Wilder. He’s OK, but he would not last 5 rounds with a prime Foreman. Old Foreman might even give Wilder more than he could handle.
It's tragic that they never rematched. Foreman's hubris combined with Ali's toughness and smarts lead to Foreman's downfall in that fight. Ali would not have been able to trick Foreman again the same way in a rematch .... and he knew it.
Ali was actually going to give him a rematch but Ali didn’t expect to leave apart of himself in Manila so he avoided it as long as he could. He got lucky when Foreman lost to Jimmy Young because he was suppose to fight the winner but he ended up taking such a beating from Earnie Shavers that he lost his next fight to Spinks.
Of all the heavyweight bouts I have seen on RUclips, Foreman vs. Lyle is the best I have ever seen. I just cannot imagine being on the receiving end of even a single blow from either of those two guys, and they somehow endured it over and over and over again. Unbelievable.
I have mad RESPECT for all those fighters who fought GEORGE FOREMAN...This guy is absolute legend and classy and one of history G.O.A.T heavyweight.....
The content on this channel is always on point. Great to see Foreman in his physical prime. Intimidating powerhouse. Safe to say, most of my generation are solely aware of pudgy older George and his more amicable (boring) persona.
Just in case you're interested there's an older movie, "When we were Kings", about the Ali Foreman fight. It's not a documentary but it shows the difference in temperament between the two. As much as I'd love to like the new, mature George, I'll never be 100% convinced it's not partly an act. But I think he's just not terribly comfortable around people.
As a boxing fan who watched full matches of many all time greats, I will never fully understand Foremans’s style and it’s fascinating how successfull he was. No head movement, no great footwork, no speed, hits like a truck, granite chin. I think his greatest asset was neither his power nor his chin but utilizing his tools in the best possible way! He knew what he had been doing. Because you can hit like a truck but you would miss most of your shots if you are as slow as foreman (thats where his timing and accuracy came in) and take lots of punishment evantually (which he did and that was time when his granite chin came in). It was one of the greatest come back stories of boxing in his fourties. I also believe that that being 40 years old in his generation was like being 50 today. That being said his style and heart allowed him to be successful once he was back. He always had the style of an old man. I mean even if you are 20 and give a break for 6 months you lose speed, elusiveness etc but he never needed those skills, he never had it. Experts say that Lewis is the first modern day heavyweight. I am not comparing Foreman with today’s heavyweights but he could be the one before Lewis. We don’t see much speed, head movement, elusiveness etc in heavyweight division anymore. Wonder if we will ever see a short, inside fighter heavyweight champ again. Nowadays it’s just power and timing except (tyson fury). I think today’s short heavyweights are 6.3😂 yes guys i am talking about 6.3 - 6.2 modern day frazier’s, tyson’s.
You've done it again Rummy...right as i was about to crash 😂 gotta stay up now! Oh and I was equally conflicted between Frazier II (ESTABLISHED Foreman was just a nightmare for Joe) and the Cooney victory (reestablished Foreman as legit and a real deal contender). Rough choice...
Being Heavy fisted does go along way to prolonging a career.. Fighters were different back in the Foreman era.. The kill or be killed rule was just the way it was.. Foreman was hurt, but very functional with Ron L .. so he continued, because he could... Same with Joe Frazier.. Taking a serious beating, but he continued until he know longer could.. That what boxing was all about....
Wow that fight with Lyle was incredible action . The punishment both fighters heaped on the other was off the charts ! How Foreman got the knockout , though badly hurt himself , is a testament to his grit .
For them to be very close the same weight, George looked like he was considerably larger. Norton looked kind of chiseled, like a weight lifter, but George had the workman's physic, and had the innate strength he was born with, plus that work. From what I have seen of these videos, just about any fighter who bobbed his head, a lot, especially forward and down, was going to get toasted by George, and pretty early in the fight.
A young Foreman vs an 80s Mike would be a better fight and I would probably give the edge to Foreman but old Foreman? Even a post prison 90s Iron Mike would chew up an old Foreman like he was breakfast. Tommy Morrison beat up an old George, so just imagine what Mike would do.
For Foreman to easily defeat Joe Frazier and Ken Norton and to be defeated by Muhammed Ali means tactics and style of boxing matters a lot.
Ali was so intelligent as a boxer. Was no where near a physical specimen like foreman but so much more skill.
Amen .enough said.
But would not have beaten Larry Holmes in those years of 1976-1982

Possibly THE highest profile fight in HW history n Big George made it look like a walk in the park.

was bummy an intentional mistake
0:59 who heard “down goes frazier, down goes frazier”
The Lyle fight was so moving and inspiring to watch...so much heart and soul....two great warriors....I wish they both could have won!!!
1 milion. Go Rummy, love your videos and channel.
9:40 - The moment at which plans for the Michael Moorer Lean Mean Fat Grilling Machine was scrapped.
lmao!
Apparently George made more money out of the grill than he ever made in boxing. That's insane. Obviously the grill only sold so well because of his boxing reputation though.
Hands down, this is the best narration of anything I've ever heard on RUclips.
GEORGE FOREMAN HIS LIFE IS A CREDIT TO HUMANITY
Great video of this magnificent fighter.
Wow.. George was ferocious and undoubtedly one of the top 3 heavyweights of all time.
My earliest memmory of boxing is when my father said about Big George, "this man's punches don't look that hard, but they are."
the bigger they are the harder they hit lol
Thanks, Rummy. A great education for me & tribute to a great fighter!
Great power, great fighter. Classy, funny guy. Thank you for laying it out there Big George.
I believe Foreman became harder to knockout as he aged. More often, most fighters chin gets weaker with time. Amazing, one of the best ever.
Absolutely fantastic video yet again Rummy. Love your channel.
I had no idea you watched his videos hahaha
Absolutely. Tyson and Frazier were VERY similar. I think Tyson had a better uppercut xl, otherwise virtually identical fighters. Tyson was also faster
God even one of Tyson’s old trainers said to him “whatever ya do Mike, don’t fight George Foreman”
His hooks are like atomic bombs and Frazier chin was Hiroshima's ground zero.
Great quality. Love to see these fights in HD. ...Foreman-Lyle!!!!! EPIC
George Foreman foi um dos lutadores peso pesado mais forte do mundo. Um grande pugilista guerreiro campeão. Parabéns Foreman, você é um verdadeiro campeão.
One of the very best boxing channel
I had the opportunity of meeting George foreman personally at Clearfield Utah job corps center. I referred to him as champ told him do you things and he went on about doing his thing. I look at George Foreman as heavenly fathers inspiration to mankind!
I love the clip with Foreman hitting the bag with Dick Sadler holding it. Sadler is getting rocked by him. He has to be one of the best punchers of all time! He’s a legend through and through.
Lyle vs Foreman was epic.
The Foreman vs Lyle fight was amazing. It was almost like a fight from a Rocky movie. Two guys just slugging it out. The full fight is available on RUclips. Highly recommended for any boxing fan.
excellent show, his five best notable wins
Loving the videos you commentary is fantastic keep up the good work
Foreman took some epic shots from Lile and overcame them, then KOd Moorer at age 45, simply unbelievable!!!
Epic video! Prime George Foreman was no joke.
God bless you Big George
Thanks Rummy! I love watching the stoicism of young Foreman - such brutal power, such little emotion. A young Foreman vs a peak Wilder would be an awesome fantasy match - I'd pick Foreman by late KO after getting off the canvas twice.
You are overestimating Wilder. He’s OK, but he would not last 5 rounds with a prime Foreman. Old Foreman might even give Wilder more than he could handle.
Don't underestimate Wilder tho he has better power than any other heavyweight in the world right now
joshua is the biggest banger atm but none of them even come close to foremans inhuman power
foreman in his prime would knock Wilder into next week..fighters back in the day were made of tougher stuff than todays pansies
@Sudarshan Aravamudhan 😂you are dead right saved me saying it 👌
After Ali won, he used to laugh and say, "Forman is the one fighter who will never get a rematch with me."
It's tragic that they never rematched. Foreman's hubris combined with Ali's toughness and smarts lead to Foreman's downfall in that fight. Ali would not have been able to trick Foreman again the same way in a rematch .... and he knew it.
Ali would have lost the rematch, IMO.
I didn't know Ali said that, but it proves that Ali was smart enough to know that Foreman would have changed his tactics and beat Ali the next time.
@@robertthomas8653 never foreman win ali
Excellent commentary.!!!! I love it I love it I love it
Absolutely fantastic video
I could watch your commentary all day. Good stuff
Excellent! Well put together!
Thanks for the video. Big George still is Simply BIG George!
999 comments .. mine will make it 1000
God bless you Georges. Best ever hw champion
Of all the heavyweight bouts I have seen on RUclips, Foreman vs. Lyle is the best I have ever seen. I just cannot imagine being on the receiving end of even a single blow from either of those two guys, and they somehow endured it over and over and over again. Unbelievable.
Rummy you’re like the Belgium Ambassador... you are spoiling us
I remember watching the Foreman v Lyle fight on ABC's Wide World of Sports. Still one of the most exciting fights I've ever watched.
Rummy I discovered your other channel wow lynch wow. What a coincidence
Simon 'Ghost' Riley what is it?
Foreman was always one of my favorites in both eras... Great work again Rummy!
When you talk about boxing, it's not the age or the reach or whatever. If we are in the same class, we fight... may the better man win!
I have mad RESPECT for all those fighters who fought GEORGE FOREMAN...This guy is absolute legend and classy and one of history G.O.A.T heavyweight.....
Foreman is my favourite boxer he’s the best
"But cool as an assassin......." love it!
Great videos Rummy!!! Keep up the great work!
Great video. Good job, Rumsfeld.
The fight with Ron Lyle was epic. Thanks for posting.
Excellent video Rummy. Only possible change would be swap out 2nd Frazier fight with the destruction of Gerry Cooney.
Rummy’s Corner + Boxing Legends TV = happiest boxing fan in the world 🙏🏽👊🏽💢
The content on this channel is always on point.
Great clip Thanks,Keith Cheers
Great vid Rummy
Jesus Christ man George Foreman and Ron Lyle went five rounds pounding the shit out of each other. Can you imagine? Both of those guys
Foreman v Lyle is my fight!
I agree with you on your top 5. Really enjoyed this. Thanks
The first Frazier fight should have been stopped after round 1. He was barely standing for round 2 and basically had to be pushed out by his trainer.
One of my all time favorites. When he landed anything it shook his opponent’s soul
*BIG GEORGE 2019*
Foreman vs Lyle was my dad's favorite fight until the day he died. We'd break that out just to enjoy that brawl.
Great video!
One of the greatest heavyweights of all time and to come back and win the heavyweight title at that age puts the icing on the cake
“Cool as an assassin”. 1:56
From what I have seen of these videos, just about any fighter who bobbed his head, a lot, especially forward and down, was going to get toasted by George, and pretty early in the fight.
as usual another great video from Rummy
One of my fantasy match up is old foreman vs 90s tyson.. It would be great, and foreman would win
25 year old Tyson ducked 45 year old Foreman
A young Foreman vs an 80s Mike would be a better fight and I would probably give the edge to Foreman but old Foreman? Even a post prison 90s Iron Mike would chew up an old Foreman like he was breakfast. Tommy Morrison beat up an old George, so just imagine what Mike would do.
Surely 80s Tyson would be a better fight?
storminbomboras that would be cool but I would’ve rather seen sonny liston vs George foreman.
storminbomboras 90s Tyson wasn’t his best version
Excellent as always. Thanks. (And, thanks to Geo Foreman too. 🖒🤠)
