I was just punched in the face 2 months ago. He punched he so hard I could hear a bell ringing. A male in his 80s. It left a bruise. We went to reposition. So we told him what we were doing. And then we looked down to find the draw sheet and he punched me. I almost hit the ground. The thing is if he were to hit an administrative worker he would have been sent to geri psych. Nothing was done. Understaffing and long hours. Some needs to be the responsibility of the administration. This is the most stressful job I have ever had. I have been in nursing for 16 years

Misty Martin that's awful. I'm so sorry that happened. We can do our best to be on our toes but sometimes shit comes out of nowhere. The lack of response by your employer is wholly unacceptable.

Thanks for your reply. I think that just being able to talk to someone and vent helps so much. At my job everone only gets 2 days off in a row twice per month. So ever other week its just 1 day off. I have been on the schedule for 7 years. I think that alone causes burn out.

I understand both of you on these specific incidents. My question would be does the hospital have any responsibility to protect the staff? You hit on this at the end. It seems like the hospital needs to really look at the environment, "burnout" and patient population. I'm a nurse manager and one of my nurses was struck twice by the same patient the second time hard enough to discolor her left eye. He was put in a room observable from the nurse station and the nurses made aware of his behavior. Two nurses in the room at all times when they had to go in and they prepared for the pts behavior. We also made sure to rotate nurses so that no one had to put up with constant abuse from the pt. They needed breaks. These were small guidelines to.set for my nurses but we got through the admission and no one else got hurt.

Ella White Ella White absolutely agree. It’s not official policy but my unit rotates the most challenging assignments, we involve management when our own
efforts are not enough. We also as a team avoid going in alone or being in situations where you could be more easily injured. I think the level of intervention has to match the risk to the staff. Risk of injury is real, and I don’t mean to minimize that. I just think we should be on our toes at all times and keep in mind we are the guardians and protectors of these individuals.

Yes we have a fire and safety officer. After I got punched in the face he came down and took a report. One of the questions were what could you have done differently that could have prevented this from happening. That always makes me feel lime its my fault.

So is ok at any point for a patient to abuse a nurse. I disagree with you guys on this one.

I don't think it's ever okay for a patient to abuse a nurse, but I do think we are held to a higher standard than patients in terms of how we react. I've been in lots of situations where I wanted to hit back but it was unnecessary and reactionary. There have to be protections in place for both...however, as a nurse patients attempt to smack you all the time, and you learn ways to handle that that don't involve potentially hurting them in return.
