Thanks for this video. I was especially curious about how TrueNAS was playing along with now "legacy" GELI encryption. Even though I like how TrueNAS now supports per-dataset-encryption, I do not wish to move to that method right away. Simply because it first needs a full decryption first. I think, I shift this to the future, when I set up a new (bigger) pool. But it looks like TrueNAS 12 seems to run smoothly when coming from FreeNAS 11.3. I will consider switching soon, thanks to you going through the process :)
I have Freenas 11.2 uB and didn't see any upgrades or trains to switch to either 11.3 or Truenas 12 So I went and did it though creating a boot flash drive and did the upgrade from boot. What do you do if you Don't have the Trains or updates even being shown. Thanks.
Hey Tom! Done the update for the jail and it gets same as 13:20 but I can;t seem to press enter to finish it. it just shows all the /var...../ and then (END) but clearly not finished.
@@jeffteachworth7918 by the way - my issues have been resolved with the latest updates. I use plugins through the UI and latest updates fixed all the issues I've had
I had FreeNAS running in ESXi 6.7 with an LSI 2008 card in passthrough and with the upgrade, after 4-5 minutes the VM crashed every time. So I had to boot it up without the ESXi (booting a USB unit directly) and now is working fine. Waiting to see if the ESXi issue is resolved somewhere and return back with ESXi again.
the only way to go to or to leave the gELI encryption is to encrypt or decrypt the individual disks, since GELI is whole disk encryption outside of zfs. the migration method is going to be either decrypt each disk or delete the pool, because the GELI encryption is done before zfs touches the disks, zfs is not GELI aware afaik.
Some notes for dinosaurs like me who FINALLY decided to update their 11.3 1. Without 11.3 *U5 * you cannot see 12.0 Stable train. Update, wait, refresh a couple of times - and it will appear. 2. You cannot iocage upgrade anymore (in v12). The 12.2-release which Freenas 12.0 is based on is not available to fetch, the only available is 12.4 - and iocage refuses to upgrade to 12.4 because it is higher than base. That means you have to go straight to 13.0. 3. Once you go to v13 you can upgrade. 4. If your jails do not start, go to web ui -> jaiL -> EDIT -> jail properties and reset the dev_fs to 0. I've no idea what it does but the jails now run.
I have a Freenas system running off USB. I believe the USB has failed, as the bootup never fully completes. Unfortunately I do not have a duplicate of the USB, so it looks like I'll have to switch to TrueNAS. Are the two basically interchangeable? I just need to get the darn access back to my drives.
Hi and thank you. Question: at 13:15 you hit END and then ENTER and then some other key stroke. I hit CNTRL C and that aborts the upgrade. Wth am I doing wrong? Just a putty session.
Hi Tom, can you share some insight on how to care for the drives in long run ? What I mean is how to keep the physical disks running healthy. What to look out for. Stuff like that. For example: Do u just keep all defaults and wait for that email that a disk failed, or do u know any time tested tricks to keep things solid. I noticed >> there are some settings in the "disk" menu... Smartctl is often all over the place ... scrub Why? I find it hard to know when a disk is going out, but this time I caught one at my house... the disk was CONSTANTLY spinning up and stopping. Smartctl had some unusual numbers, but reported the disk is fine. I can't imagine this disk is going to last very long while doing a spinup & spindown every 10 seconds !! I have 4 machines running FN // 2 virtual and 2 bare metal. Both bare metals have had a fail disk in 2 years. zero fails for the virtual ones(XCP-NG).
I have the same issue with legacy encryption, I can't find a way to upgrade the encryption. I would like to take advantage of the new encryption features but can't with legacy encryption.
