I built a NAS and installed FreeNAS 9.3 a long time ago. I upgraded my system multiple times, making mistakes along the way and dug deep into the community forum to resolve them. It is however very beneficial to get a video delivery of how to manage the system from an experienced practitioner including tips you won't get in the online documentation.

All of the videos that I have watched, that you have created regarding Truenas are very "to the point" explanations on how to do things without getting into too much detail for the casual server user/builder. I just want to know how to make it work without spending a lot of time doing research on every aspect of the process. I've built two Freenas/Truenas servers and you are one of my two go-to sources for basic help with my server projects. Keep up the good work. Now, if you could do a video explaining SNMP with regard to sharing Uninterruptible Power Supplies between two servers, that would interest me. Thank again.

Hi, Start watching your videos after installing my own first TrueNAS server. Loved your videos so far. But i have one suggestion. Pleas make a video on Jdownload install and how to make it download to SMB folders. I am sure for you its peace of cake but newbro like me really wanted to know the basics. Thanks

Hey! 😁 Thanks for the video, nicely explained how to set up a jail, but I'm still a little vague on when I might want to use one! 🤔 If I understand your explanation right, it works a bit like a docker container?! Are there any typical installs available for a jail? ...my question is really based on my docker experience, where, let's say you wanted a web server, you can 'docker run nginx' to launch a web-server... is there something similar for TrueNAS?

Great question! Jails are a way to virtualize the FreeBSD Operating System that TrueNAS runs on. You'd use one when you want to run an app, without letting it interfere with your installation. Jails are great lightweight ways to run web apps and other services. In a future video, we'll cover deploying a number of applications to a Jail. They can be used similar to a docker container, but use the pkg command instead, like "pkg install plexmediaserver-plexpass".
If you prefer using docker natively, it's not possible in the current release of TrueNAS core, but iXSystems (Who develop TrueNAS) are in the beta stage of testing a service they call TrueNAS scale, which does use docker containers instead of jails: www.truenas.com/truenas-scale/#Features. It's not yet ready for prime time, but when it is we'll be getting deep inside it!

I'm manually installing Jellyfin and would like to connect it to port 8096, which is the default. How do I go about doing that?

Not sure what type of bug I have with mine but I kept getting permission and https errors. This has been going on for months. Not sure what happened or why but now it just decided to work and was finally able to create a jail and get plugin services. I am aware of the bugs the system has but I have no idea why mine decided to finally to work

So I guess Jail is some kind of process isolation right?

Hoping someone can help - I've followed along with this to create a jail to run a PostgreSQL server. However, I get an issue when I try to set up the networking on the jail. When I select DHCP, it refuses to start. If I change the type to NAT, it works fine. Problem is that if I run it in NAT, I have no idea how to then point pgAdmin to the database which is stored in the jail since it doesn't recognise the IP address that I give it. The error I get with DHCP is "[EFAULT] + Acquiring DHCP address: FAILED". Can you explain why I'm getting this error and what I can do to fix it?

Is it possible to add Jails to TrueNAS Scale?

    • @BlackbeardSupport

I am not very familiar with scale yet, but my belief is you can instead use docker, and that it does not use Jails.

"Jails are not just run on the TrueNAS installation itself" - in fact it seems Jails CANNOT be run on the installation, because a suitable pool type cannot be created on the boot disk? Surprised you do not mention this, quite annoying we cannot use the wasted space on a boot disk to host jail data...

If I recall, here I think I mean on the OS installation, but yea, pity you can't use the boot pool. It used to make sense as the boot drive was rarely redundant and generally consisted of a thumb drive, but as small SSD's get more and more prevalent, it would be nice to be able to throw your jails on there.
