    I like the way you don’t treat us less knowledgeable people like idiots. Often in forums those that reply do so cryptically and provide less than helpful advice. Your videos are a refreshing change.

    I found this really useful and helpful. Thank you so much. I hadn't used FreeNAS for some time, and had switched to TrueNAS now anyway, but had forgotten most of how I set up Transmission on FreeNAS at the time 😀All good. One question - is there any possibility of your describing in another video how to add Flexget alongside Transmission please? I also did that on my old FreeNAS but too much time has gone by since I did so. Its not so common a requirement I dont suppose but would really appreciate your expert guidance if you do make such a video. Thanks

      Hey mate, hoping you can offer some advice but honestly no worries if not this is totally outside the scope of your tutorial.
      I've got my client installed and my dataset mounted (thanks again) and I'm ready to start torrenting. Is it something like:
      1. Create a network share for storing torrent files
      2. Mount the share inside my torrent client container (I'm using SCALE)
      3. Download torrent files into the network share from my home PC
      4. Configure the client to auto load the torrent files and start downloading?
      Sorry if this is a dumb question haha

    • @BlackbeardSupport
      @BlackbeardSupport  2 года назад +1

      You could do it that way, yes, but that's a lot more manual work, when you could just use Sonarr and Radarr to find the content for you, and send it to the torrent client. Check out my video on those at ruclips.net/video/oGkVGhuI5Vw/видео.html and at ruclips.net/video/ZNLRgYkQLs0/видео.html.

    Only just come across your videos as I've set up TrueNas this past week. Super handy videos! but wondering why you are manually setting up jails as opposed to using plugins for Transmission or other apps when they exist? Maybe you explained it elsewhere, but very interested to know. Cheers!

    • @BlackbeardSupport
      @BlackbeardSupport  2 года назад +2

      Hi Robert, There are a few reasons. 1) If a Plugin fails to install, there's nothing you can do to fix it. 2) Jails created with Plugins are slightly more painful to customize, and (most importantly) 3) it's more fun this way! Pressing a single button is boring. Pressing lots of buttons is fun!

    • @TheGreatWolf13
      @TheGreatWolf13 2 года назад +1

      @@BlackbeardSupport Thanks for the reply! I'm all about 3! haha, but coming from unraid, most are all about using the plugins and not manually setting up manual docker containers. I'm new to Jail's in TureNAS. have set up my Plex using the plugin it was smooth thankfully and kept the wife happy i could get her content back online lol. But thanks, it's great to know, just seeing a lot of people saying don't use the plugins in forums etc, but no one elaborates why. Will certainly look at some manual jails in the future.

    • @BlackbeardSupport
      @BlackbeardSupport  2 года назад +1

      @@TheGreatWolf13 I think Unraid is set up for more 'set and forget' use cases. It's model is a little less tinkering, a little more 'It just works'. Lots of people don't have that experience, but I do think that's their goal.
      TrueNAS is a lot more enterprise focused, and you are expected to know a lot about it. The community really takes that to heart, and tends to be a little bit 'Do it yourself'. While you can set it and forget it for most applications, the plugins are more a community supported add on, that don't get any real attention from IXSystems. You're relying a lot on the person who's maintaining the plugin, and they tend to be just an enthusiast somewhere who's doing it for themselves. When it's broken, you are out of luck until someone updates the service, which can be weeks/months/never.
      The community tends to hate that, and makes it known. If I'm trying a new service, I have a tendency to use a plugin just to get it up and running and see what it's like, but then rebuild it in a jail so I have full control over it.

  • @walid7189
    @walid7189 Год назад

    That's awesome. So happy to discover your channel.
    Would you recommend to set the IP of that transmission jail with a DMZ within the router? Will this be considered fairly safe? Or I will ask differently, how do I make sure that the ports are open for it properly.
    Is there any desktop gui that can connect to that service on the TrueNAS? instead of using the web based one, it seems to lack in a lot of things I really miss having.

  • @ArrangingFear56
    @ArrangingFear56 2 года назад +1

    Well what's happening is after mounting the folder, and starting the service, the folder disappears from the smb share, the file is there when you look for it in the shell though, and 'mv'ing downloaded files within to another visible folder still doesn't make it visible until you chown it to yourself which I find quite odd. It seems as if transmission makes it so the files are only owned by itself? Perhaps transmission is just broken this version.

    • @BlackbeardSupport
      @BlackbeardSupport  2 года назад

      That is unusual, I haven't experienced that. I'm looking at my SMB share folder right now and it has my transmission downloads in it. Is it possible that your own user profile you use with SMB doesn't have full directory access? Mine recursivly has access to everything in the pool.

    • @ArrangingFear56
      @ArrangingFear56 2 года назад

      @@BlackbeardSupportno it literally takes your permission away, like if you mount an existing folder and start transmission, it vanishes from the smb share. Maybe it’s the latest version that’s broken? Seems like I’m not the only one with this issue, I installed it via the gui though so that might be an outdated version or something. Worth noting that recursively resetting permissions via ACL manager didn’t seem to solve the problem as well.

    • @BlackbeardSupport
      @BlackbeardSupport  2 года назад

      Weird. I gave it a quick try, and I couldn't even reproduce the problem, so something strange going on there indeed.
      If you're installing it via a plugin, it wouldn't surprise me if the permissions go strange. Plugins do weird and undocumented things.

    Any ideas?

    • @BlackbeardSupport
      @BlackbeardSupport  2 года назад

      Setting a mount point shouldn't impact the availability of a share, so the two actions are probably unrelated.
      Is it possible you removed permissions to the share folder for the windows PC user? That could have happened and would explain why it's missing.

  • @KeithKreider
    @KeithKreider 2 года назад

    I have been following along on your tutorials and I noticed the trend that you create a group with permissions to the primary dataset for each program in a jail, or jails. This worked great up to a point. I got plex, sonarr, radarr and tautulli going but as I create a new group when I go in to set the permissions TrueNAS does show the new group and a option to select. It only shows me the first few that I made and not all of them. It os like trueNAS only allows me to add a limited small amount of groups to a dataset for some reason. If I can't set permissions for Transmission and Jackett why bother?

    • @BlackbeardSupport
      @BlackbeardSupport  Год назад +1

      That's unusual, you should be able to create hundreds. How many do you have? Could it be a browser issue not loading all of them? Worth checking a different browser.

      @@BlackbeardSupport Hey, thank you for your reply! I typically use Chrome without any problems but I just downloaded and installed Edge and see the same thing there, so I do not think that it is browser-related. • @BlackbeardSupport
      @BlackbeardSupport  2 года назад +1

      Perfectly adequate solution to do it that way. I don't for a few reasons.
      1) If something goes wrong, the plugin just fails. No useful error, nothing helpful to troubleshoot. Jails give you a bit more control.
      2) Plugins tend not to be updated as often.
      3) Plugins are a touch less customizable. For example when doing it in a Jail you could have one Jail running multiple Apps. That's more awkward in a plugin.
      4) and most importantly.... It's more fun! Pressing a one button solution is boring.

    I have been enjoying this series, and everything seemed to be going well...I was able to import my movies and series in SOnarr and Radarr...have Jackett working...then Transmission I did the test download and it succeded, but I am not able to find it in the mounted drive points.
    In checking it looks like the settings.json file had a "D" in downloads, versus the "d" I had actually used...so I went in and reset the settings..but I think I still had Transmission running.
    So I stopped that, first by stopping the jail, then restarted and stopped the Transmission, but when I went back in to redo the change, nano says the settings.json does not exisit?
    So two questions, (1) any suggestions on how to locate the test download? (2) Any ideas why the settings.json file disappeared and /or how to get it back?
    FYI, I have set this up as a jail with Radarr, Sonarr, Transmission, and Jacket all in one jail. Maybe that is part of the problem?
    Hope your move is going well and the unpacking goes better (well you can hope.)

    • @BlackbeardSupport
      @BlackbeardSupport  2 года назад

      Hi Kris, glad you're enjoying the series. I'm hoping to be back in the next week or two, but I've been slowed by getting some new equipment. Hoping that some new lights and a new microphone will lead to more consistent lighting and better audio, and now that I have that I just need to spend a little time catching up on my releases. Fingers crossed you'll see me again next week!
      With regards to finding your missing files, run the following command in your jail:
      find / -name 'settings.json'
      That will look for a file called 'settings.json' everywhere in the system. If it exists, it will find it. If you're worried you accidentally renamed it you can substitute * as a wild card character too. For example, 'settings*' would return 'settings.json', 'settingsfile.json' or 'settings.js' and so on.
      If you knew the name of your test download, you could try the same method to find that. Otherwise the default path for downloads is /usr/local/etc/transmission/home/, so you could see if there's a downloads directory there, or even the download itself. You may even find your settings file here! It's where it normally lives.
      Best of luck.
