- A guide on how I install Grand Prix Legends on a modern Windows 10 64bit computer and get it running with a Wheel and HPattern Shifter. I hope this guide helps others get GPL running successfully and enjoy one of the best simulations of all time!
I will try to help where I can but I may not be able to answer every question about installing this great sim.

I have a Win 98 OS computer, can I run the modern analog steering wheel directly on Win 98? I also have IndyCar Racing II CD and GPL
I installed the 4GB patch and patched the gpl.exe file but afterwards I cant create the player's file, I can't see the Grand Prix Legend window as you showed; I only see a 480p explorer window with no controls working on it. Any solutions? thanks for the video! I am on Windows 11
I followed your guide, all smooth until min 8:55, but u pon launching gpl.exe the game does not launch. I applied the 1.08 patch as you did
Same here. Do the whole istallation prozess as described. GPL all good but allways crashs when try to go in to the cockpit. Running on W11. Any helps?
have any patches that can support WIN 98 OS?
I want that original box so bad... i only own a couple of original PC games. Here in Argentina is hard as F to acquire those kind of things. I cant import either. I never played GPL as a kid.. but now im in love. The best on its kind.. and the only one i know from that era. Im right? No other game is based on F1 of that era to my knowledge. The Era of heroes.. insane people that drove closer to the edge.. pushing the human limits. You were sorrounded by fuel... sitting on it... one mistake... just one.. and you end up in flames or flying. Safety is the best way to alienate the human spirit... i wish the golden times make a return some time and people start to do crazy things again. Manx TT is one of those crazy things that i love that still exists.
To mount the ISO you don't actually need a 3rd party program, windows can do it natively. Just double click the file and it will mount as a drive.
I didnt know that!
I use 7-Zip to extract .iso files into a temp folder and install from there.
@@GPLaps you can also right click and there will be an option to mount on windows 10
remember the era, not too long ago when you did need a 3rd party program? that was the XP and previous era. Gosh, it was rough! LOL We've come so far!
Bro tell me how can I mount iso file in my windows 11 laptop, there is no cd drive in my laptop
For those using full damage and flappy paddles, you MUST back off the throttle on the upshifts! Speed shifting will destroy your engine in very short order... You have been warned...lol. Thanks Jake, timely reminder, I was just about to reinstall GPL again, this vid gave me a good refresher. Didn't know about the 4Gb patch, or Monza67. Cheers mate.
What about upshifting with an H-shifter without using the clutch pedal? Do you also need to lift the throttle?

Have installed GPL from my original disc plus various upgrades and tons of tracks for years, this tutorial got me to reinstall in 2022 for the first time and i greatly appreciate you taking the time to walk us through it in such detail, brilliant job, thanks so much.

This was perfect timing. I've been watching your videos alot recently and wanted to get GPL and then one night I was on ebay and ended up finding a sealed GPL big box for stupidly cheap. It arrived and then you uploaded this. Thank you for the tutorial
Thank you very much for this. I have all the newer racing sims, but couldn't get this one going until now. Success! As an old-fart racer, GPL captures the images in my head regarding the old days of racing. As a kid I watched live tv with Chris Economaki during 1967 Monaco GP and Lorenzo Bandini's fatal crash. I was screaming at the tv when the marshals turned their backs on him to put the car fire out, and he reignited. Horrible. And yet, with GPL those images seem very real and fitting with the title. Once again, thank you. Not for the horrible image of that race, but for the chance to capture some of the magic you present in your videos.

I remember playing it (together with gp3) on a keyboard because i couldnt afford a wheel, now finally after 24 years I got back into GPL and it feels sooo good playing this with a wheel.

Thanks for the video. Very well documented. I'd always wanted to reinstall GPL but never got around to it. Thanks to your vid I was able to get it running fairly easily. Did a couple of practice laps and it all started coming back, really reminded me why I enjoyed running this so many years ago. Good memories.

Thank you GPLaps ever so much for this guide. It was presented very well & clearly, and was very easy to follow. This video got me up and running with this classis title once again in a short amount of time and virtually no hassles whatsoever! I did everything as you said and it was all great aside from the FFB which took just 10 or so minutes to dial in. On my CSL Elite I set the wheels rotation to 360 (what I believe was the norm back in those days) with 10:1 steering ratio, and GEMs Maximum Force set to 320 (the suggested 450 setting was so light I could barely tell there was any FFB at all). It's now a little light when experiencing GPLs slightly overpronounced tyre slip effect but a little strong in slower and grippy corners, so my settings seem to find a nice balance for me. I only meant to set it up and then move on with my day but got caught up racing for an hour - it's such a great title even to this day. Many thanks again.

Utterly **FANTASTIC** vid Jake!!! I've gone through the process to install the game years ago but your vid taught me a few things I had always wondered about GPL, particularly the suggested degree of rotation when using 300º for our wheels.
On a side note, to anyone reading this......if you find playing GPL or other racing sims too much of a headache because you're using multiple sim hardware or gamepads, and can't be bothered to be unplugging and replugging in your wheels, shifters, pedals, joystick, etc just to get them in a different order, or simply play nice with whatever game you play, I strongly....and I mean **STRONGLY** suggest getting a GIMX adapter!
GIMX is a USB adapter that allows you to plug in as many USB controller devices as you want, and it will combine them into one emulated Logitech G27 or G29 FFB wheel! You need either a raspberry Pi or another machine running Windows or Linux.
You plug your devices into that machine, and then run GIMX to your main racing sim PC. I'm personally using a separate laptop that I have all my sim racing hardware plugged into. It acts as sort of a USB Hub, with GIMX software installed. Then I simply connect my laptop to my PC via USB using the GIMX adapter.
I cannot stress enough how much of a pain in the butt and headache this solution has saved me! It literally allowed me to enjoy all my racing games again, particularly GPL and those pesty Codemasters games that are NOTORIOUS for not playing nice with multiple controllers!
This solution allows you to play *ANY* racing sim or game you want, and Windows(as well as any game running on it including GPL) will ALWAYS see your wheel, shifter, pedals, etc as **ONE** Logitech G27/G29 wheel. No fuss, no muss!
GIMX is a solution more and more simmers are using and for good reason. No more dealing with the headache of trying to play games that don't properly support multi-controllers. Just something to think about. I've been using it for a few years now and so glad I did. Check it out here:

I bought a new gaming computer two years ago and it has no CD drive and I lost GPLegends. I used to love racing SPA 66 and now I have it installed again so massive thanks from me.you have made an old guy very happy, going to race the 1955 cars.
Sir, you are a legend! Your channel got me hooked on sim-racing in classic cars. Tried to install it on a MacBook using Parallels Virtual Machine but I didn’t get the controls to work. I switched to a gaming PC running Windows 10 and it runs perfectly with my G29 wheel and pedals. I’m still in the process of installing the patches but I couldn’t wait and drove some rounds using a low fps. This is so much fun!!!

How useful was this ! Put GPLegends on pc some 18 months after upgrading and this was a life saver Lol . Pretty much there just a few wrinkles to iron out so thanks again for this 👍😉
Managed to download it and works like a charm 😍😍. Thank you very much for this tutorial. I was worried that the gear shift wouldn't work because it's connected directly to the G27 steering wheel and it wasn't recognisable on the game controller page but with auto it was all good at first try.

Thanks to this video I am now a GPL tragic! I gew up in the 80s and 90s and played the NASCAR racing and Indycar games from Papyrus. I remember the fanfare around GPL at the time, however our family PC would not have been able to run it. At that age i was more about modding those other games to make them like what I was watching on TV. Historical stuff didn't really grab me. Fast forward 25 years and I have learned so much about historic F1. It was time to give GPL a look. Your tutorial worked perfectly for me, now I'm blasting around historic SPA and the flats of Monza in absolute weapons of racing machines. I found it really neat how installing and playing a game so old really adds to the nostalgia of simulating the era even before that time. Something modern games will never be able to recreate the same. GPL will live forever.
I was thinking about a re-install of the sim it all began with for me. This video is extremely helpful. So thank you a lot for that.
If I get my new PC I will reserve some disk-space for GPL.
Mate, absolutely awesome! It spins me out that this sim is still so hugely popular. I'm in total agreeance with you in that this has to be the best racing sim ever. I started playing this game when it first came out in 1998 and I fell in love with it immediately. Over the years I've been updating it as much as possible, and playing it as much as possible, either single player or over a LAN, although it's been a while since I've played it, life has frequently got in the way of that, unfortunately.
I've played plenty of other racing sims over time, and many have been great, but none have made such an impression on me as GPL has, it truly is a legend. They got so much right with this game, from the feel of the dynamics of the cars and the level of setup that was available to get the best performance out of them. It wasn't perfect of course, but it certainly set the standard in racing sims. I'm hanging to reinstall it and have another crack at it :)
HEY! Thanks so much for getting this out. We have been watching for this video and sure am happy to have it. I got the game up and running a week ago and it works fine, the controllers (Fanatec) worked great right off the bat and I got a Samsung G9 Odyssey 49" curved monitor and it works pretty good but in the effort of switching the graphics around to find what works the best I got the dreaded error message from GEM+ and I have emailed off the debug file as requested so hopefully we can get it going again.
I have GPL on my current PC but i'm probably doing a new build soon and forgot how i installed so definitely saving this. Thanks, Jake

Wow, all of that worked thank you! Finally, after first buying the game on my low-end PC back in the 90s and not being able to play GPL I've now got it running with all the suggested mods in 1080p in less time than the original install would probably have taken. My cheap GT1030 runs this on max settings you suggest. Not sure my XBOX360 controller is ideal for a sim as I can bearly get round a track on the novice settings but we gotta start somewhere.
Thanks so much for this video!!! I do greatly appreciate the detail on getting this to work. You should do one for Grand Prix 4 when setting up the patches needed for the game bugs and mods, plus controller setup.
Also I hope you do follow up video on things to know when starting out on this game as well covering using new physics people are making . Maybe even include using igor. Once again I love your channel. Different content than anyone else, awesome showcases and history lessons of racing all packed into one. Not to mention just amazing tutorials. I have been playing Indy cart racing II and now I'll be playing this all because your videos! Games I never knew about and even if I did probably would of taken forever to get into due to the needed knowledge of mods, patches, configurations, controller setups, and just those small pieces of advice you add in from playing so much on it and learning over time the do's and dont's.
Great stuff. I have an install up and running already, but I tend to bumble through these things, so I will watch in full and see what I learn. I'm currently playing in Windows XP, and a fun fact, the latest GEM+ still works in Windows 98!

The Post MS DOS Era of Racing Games, quite the variety with Titles like Viper Racing, NASCAR Legends, ToCA 2 Touring Cars, CART: Precision Racing, Test Drive: Le Mans, NHRA Drag Racing and Drag Racing 2 and Almost Every Need For Speed After NFS II.
Thank you so much for providing a Tutorial on how to get these Classics Running on Modern Machines and what issues most people will face. It being a 20 Year Old Game obviously there will be issues trying to push the game over the Maximum Intended Frames but I kinda like it since it was just a thing of it's time. And Setting up a Controller, god it's an absolute pain but once you get it working it's so much easier afterward. Overall, there's far worse games out there to try and get working on Modern PCs

Thanks Jake. Well I did this install a couple of years ago using the online tutorials, I had quite a few false starts and had to go over stuff a number of times before it all worked. I'm pretty sure I have things installed that I don't really need anyway so might wipe it and have another go your way which should tidy things up.

Still remember the day I played the demo for the first time in 1998.
Had to use minimum details for the graphics on my Cyrix PC. Two years later I got a steering wheel and a Voodoo 3d accelerator and it was a whole different game. Thanks Mom for the money 🤗
With my Fanatec DD1 Wheel i have No luck with gplshift - with fairshift it works perfect (Start with administrator)

Very excellent video and intro to GPL! Its great to have such a well explained and easy setup to get people going.
A couple things for beginners:
I would advise to make a driver each for each mod you install. I just add the Season Year to mine at the end to see fast at a Glance if i got the correct one. It makes Setup&Replay management a lot easier in the long run. (Replays work only correctly with the right mod and GEM+ Patches)
You can edit the Season files within GEM+, just click the Seasons button in it and you can move tracks around in order, change race laps, change which track you want to run.
Driving GPL will feel weird at first, you really need to get the tires warmed up and they take y good trashing to get them warm, they are much harder then modern tires, but once they are at temp they feel better. Pribluda can show those temps while you drive and color code them for you, check that out! Itll help you starting out. Chose some simpler tracks to learn the game, monza, watkins are good places, spa and monaco might frustrate you more then its fun learning it... The cooper is also a lot more drivable then other cars, The eagle also a nice choice. Since the cars have no aero you also need to drive different, you balance the car around the corners with throttle, its a lot of fun.

Yay....got it working perfectly. The only thing I missed and not sure how to get it like yours is to have the black pillars in the menu area....mine is stretched out wide. Cars drive well....I may have to do a race or two now.

Next tutorial on how to make custom ai lines in gtr2 please, I'm having problems with some tracks where the ai just smashes into the wall (macau, le mans and especially the targa florio). Keep up the amazing work I've been waiting for this for a long time now I can finally play gpl!
I bought the Italian version, does this game support multiple languages?
After 24 years, I still use a keyboard for GPL- I tried a wheel and it just felt wrong. I hadn't played in a decade but downloaded the 2020 Demo and then uploaded my desk a few weeks back to carry over the season/track files, then tuned the driver.ini because I couldn't deal with seeing Beltoise in the BRM, which he was not in that year! For folks having trouble getting the GPLPS installer to download, try copy and pasting the link to a new tab and refreshing
Also it seems like G29 shifters may not work with GPLShift. You may want to try 'Fairshift' if you have issues

Gplaps, make a driving academy to convert noobs into aliens. People can pay patreon to access the intensive "course" haha. How to drive like a gentleman.
To make GPLShift work with G29 you need to connect the shifter via USB. You can buy an accesory or make your own with arduino. Yesterday i found a github with a free and open source solution.

@@nutofgandalf710 use your phone. Instead of clicking the link hold and select open in a new windows and the download will pop up. It worked for me so many times both in PC and Smarthphone.

I tried several times to get this to work but just kept returning to desktop after starting... the only thing I did differently was changing the install language to UK English. I tried again leaving it on US English and it works perfectly... I know you said to use US English but I never thought it would cause a crash to desktop. Thank you for the video, I'm now enjoying GPL once again on my new rig.

My Logitech G29 H-shifter was not working using the patched GPLShift (in auto or 1.USB), so I reverted the gpl.exe (GPLShift helpfully created a backup) deleted the GPlc67.exe (as suggested) and then downloaded Fairshift 2.1, thanks for the tip @GPLaps. I then chose a Custom button setup (see the UI options) and entered each gear id in the relevant box (you can view these by changing gears in the same window). I am now happily using the h-shifter with the G29 in GPL. Just a pity about my lack of ability in the game at the moment.
Literally just found the box of this game in my closet. - Used to play this a lot with my dad as a little kid (on keyboard) - let's see if this'll help me get it up and running again, I am ready for some nostalgia.

I still love the vintage FrANCHORCHAmps (my father was born 20 km away from Spa and he and my grandfather brought me there when I was 6, must have been in 1956 and I soon became a Ferrari freak forever!). I've bee, working on Mac a,d iPad for the last ten years now, since most of he computers running on Windows are not so reliable in the long run. (I mostly use my Mac as a recording studio since I play a lot of music ). I'm quite happy to play F1 games on my iPad (easy!), mosstly RealRacing 3 and F1 Mobile, they are ok; quite competitive but I still miss thevintage part with those great layouts !!! I still jave the GPL CD-Rom which I haven't played over20 years now since I found it quite diificult to control even with the steering wheel. This said I consider buying a cheap laptop running on WINDOWS to install and play the GPL(too bad o way to run it on a Mac!)...
Any hint about a computer?
I run GPL on a MacPro 2010 upgraded with a Nvidia 1070ti with Win7 installed via Bootcamp. Overall without big problems.

You probably could escape unplugging routine if you use program named XInputPlus . It allows to pass into game just specific inputs form needed devices and ignoring others. So no need to numerate them and unplug that ones that mess thing up. But you need to make some squats to get used to this program. I used it to play some games like Daytona USA with wheel, game can see gamepad as first device and g27 as second, and don't use inputs from wheel. XInputPlus also allows to swap axis which is useful to play some old flysims with gamepads, like USAF or somethings from Novalogic.
This is awesome I downloaded mods but I didn't understand gem+ role thanks to you up and running took the chaparral around Watkins Glen goose bumps!!! Is there a running page with tracks a lot seem to be down.
FYI, If you use DEVreorder, you can set up which 3 of your USB gear you want the game (or any old game/sim) to utilize.
