    GPL was my first REAL racing sim and I still in love with it today. I got the alpha version (pre release) on a CD back in 1998 and bought the released version at the first opportunity. It's still an AMAZING sim, 21 years after its release. As the first real sim, it was hard to master. I still remember the first time I won a race against the AI on Kayalami - it was like a dream. I don't complain about its faults, because it's intended to run on a Pentium 166mhz single core, so even if the designers wanted to model everything modern sims have, they wouldn't be able to.
    Anyway, I'm glad I found your channel. I installed GPL few days ago on my brand new PC and had the intense feeling I had 20 years ago. Lots of frustration ans lots of joy accumulated over the years when playing this game. Such a great sim!

    GPL was the best sim at the time... I used to drive it with a keyboard!!... with manual shifting!!... and full damage mode... In dozens of races I only won once, because the first AI pilote had a crash in the last lap... that was epic... those cars were drive by the throtle, not by the wheel...
    Damages were very realistic, wheels jumping off and motor fires... ^^
    and the views!!!!... suspension view was a dream!!

I also, find it fascinating, how can I express it the way you respond to the other drivers when you pass them or they drive a certain way you speak as if you are there in that time period and they are truly alive...very cool and some what transcendental maybe..? These racers are kept alive in all of our hearts and minds with these sims... •  4 года назад +8

    I love this mod, it looks, drives and feels so great. The drive is thrilling and to be honest a lot of the AC community is focused on hotlapping rather than racing so you'll find a lot of hair-raising videos of people just pushing these cars to the absolute limit. I do agree 100% the AI in the game generally is weak... They ram you from behind frequently, they bottleneck at certain points, they decide to just pit for no reason and never rejoin, they retire after minor spins... The biggest improvement to the AI often comes with mods that tweak it's path around a course.
    As for GPL, I'm very impressed, I've played a few hours and think it looks fantastic and the AI seems pretty solid. However the 36fps lock really bugs me and overall it's such less forgiving to drive. It seems to me that GPL requires a much higher skill level and a lot of time put in practicing.

    I have raced both of these. It is a hard comparison to make. Because of the time I have put into GPL my heart and allegiance must go with that. I also feel it handles as it should, better but that may be 'muscle memory' as I have spent years with the sim!
    AC looks amazing, there are obviously better details in graphics and setup but my heart still says GPL. When it comes to AI, again GPL has it, head and shoulders above AC. For me it's GPL all the way as for 1967 Formula 1 cars but like others have said if VR is an issue there is no choice. I have had a go with an Oculus and it was definitely next level, for sure.
    If you have put in the time on GPL then nothing is ever going to replace it. Given the updates that is OK for now. Everything is in place to make a decent GPL replacement though. It wouldn't take much, maybe even just combining what is already out there into a decent package.
    Stroll on is what I say, can't wait.

    The difficulty of this cars in a sim racing game is that we only have our eyes to control and antecipate reactions. This formulas should be driven and be felt with our body to predict their behaviour more than any other racing cars.

    The AI in AC is done on the track level. Not all tracks have good AI but you can if you want develop some yourself with a very handy tool. It's tricky though, if you want them to race at a good level you have to speed them up and that often makes them incident-prone as they funnel into T1. And sometimes they just don't listen 😁

  • @edwardburek1717
    @edwardburek1717 4 года назад +3

    That was most impressive, I've said in the past that the GP Legends mod is the best thing to happen to Assetto, and I've said that to the likes of Chris Haye, Jimmy Broadbent and Random Callsign. I'd say that for looks and value the Assetto mod sneaks it but it just goes to show that GPL still holds its own in terms of AI and immersion, after 22 long years. I feel a challenge coming on - to recreate the season as featured in the John Frankenheimer film Grand Prix. Whether you play as Richie Axelson, or take on the role of either Pete Aron, Jean-Pierre Sarti, Nino Barlini or Scott Stoddard is down to you. The only hitch in that though is that there isn't a Charade circuit on Assetto yet. And you're right, Zandvoort's T1 is called Tarzan.

    Assetto Corsa is definitely a treasure trove of tracks and cars. On the other hand using mod tracks and mod cars can have undesirable consequences with AI, as AC has anything from road cars to formula cars, GT, vintage etc etc. The AI lines and boundaries on a track may be more suitable for some types of car and less for others. Still, the sheer amount of cars and tracks available, mostly for free, is astounding. I guess you have already visited racedepartment.com where all the "legit" free mods are hosted, there is a bit more "quality control" from the community on those mods. I would advise to check the highest rated track mods here www.racedepartment.com/downloads/categories/ac-tracks.8/?order=rating_weighted&direction=desc many of them are vintage tracks, high quality stuff. The AC community is actually huge and hyper-active, the game's popularity is ever growing even after AC development was halted and ACC has come out, so you can even avoid the AI altogether and do some multiplayer racing steamdb.info/app/244210/graphs/

    I started with GT legends many years ago and never played GPL. Looking at your videos, I now realise that I have missed out on a good game. I prefer the old skool racing and have collected loads of mods over the years for RF, RF2 and AC. The GPL circuits seem to be very well done and I hear now include a full length Isle of Man. The only negative I can see for me is that the 30fps cap may give me bad eyestrain but I will give it a go.

    •  4 года назад +1

    • @GPLaps
      @GPLaps  4 года назад

      I see the 30fps thing come up a lot (its actually 36fps). It is definitely one of the rough edges on the sim. Modders actually made 60fps available but much of the core code of GPL runs off the 36fps clock, mainly the AI so you can definitely run solo laps with the 60fps. I might be used to the lower FPS but once you get used to it its not a big deal. Switching from another sim makes it very apparent at first though.

To be more hardcore use the gear stick shifter (H-shift pattern only on the G27 unlike the G25 which gave you the option of sequential). Either way with or without a headset on your hands are never far away and you should know where your gear shifter or paddles are without looking. Just like in real life if your looking for your gear shifter to change gears and not looking where you are going you will have an accident! It really is second nature. The Assetto Corsa mod is pretty good in terms of physics and fun factor, but it doesn't have the historic feel, I always have the feel I'm racing on some modern historic race rather than 1967.

    •  4 года назад +1

      Varies from track to track. Some classic tracks like for example Longford don't exist now so were built from the ground up with the era in mind. Others have the telltale signs that they are conversions from the modern tracks.
      Look at Spa 66 for example. I could swear there's an MR2 parked just off the back straight.

      @ Yeah, but I thinking more along the lines of the old starting grids of 3 cars per row, the flag guy starting the race, pit signs and that small stuff stuff that adds a lot of imersiveness.

    There was a separate application that you could use to modify the strength of the GPL AI drivers, I don’t remember what that application name was, anybody know?

      There is an app called GPL AI Manager or "GPLAIM" but its honestly easier to edit the ini files directly.

    It's shame the quality of the AC mod is all over the place. Some carmodels are the same ones I've seen 10 years ago in rFactor. It's nice to see a proper direct comparison though. In my opinion the mod is not a proper replacment for GPL.

    Totally agree regarding game AI. These days they all fall into the "here is driver A, he'll always win. Driver B is always second. They never have failures or crash" groupings. Or (and I've played ALL the racing games) they have AI which have 200 more HP down the straights, but you can outbrake them in every corner. GPL is the perfect representation of real racing.
    Whilst it's had 22 years of development, it was good enough out of the box that people bothered. Other racing games - NR2003, Rfactor 1, GTR aside - just don't have that community support.

    WTF this quantic tachometer in GPL?

    • @michaellorenson2997
      @michaellorenson2997 4 года назад +2

      Real mechanical tachs of the period often moved in a jerky, sort of 'stepping' fashion. I can't remember why. But it does look very exaggerated in the vid. I don't remember GPL having an issue with that but it's been ten years since I ran it. Maybe something to do running it on a modern computer and graphics card.

    • @GPLaps
      @GPLaps  4 года назад +2

      Its actually an addon that tries to simulate a more accurate tach, the addon can be removed to restore fluid motion but its not quite as realistic

    • @bobmcl2406
      @bobmcl2406 3 года назад

      They were called chronometric tachometers. In the real world, it gives you a clearer image of the reading. You were really only using a tach to tell you when to shift, so the "in between" needle locations didn't really matter. And if you had a chrono tach on your street car back then, you were "da man"! 😉

    The problems with the AC mod are that the modeling is all over the place (like the shoddy 312/67 by Kunos that looks more like a BRM P115 with a Ferrari sticker or the cheese-grater-shaped BT20 and BT24) to actually competent (Hondas in general). Plus, the second problem is that AC's physics engine is really a joke when it comes to suspension-modeling, aerodynamic and engine cooling and failing formulas. For a sim those are inexcusable failures... but it's more of a problem with the program itself than the mod.
    All the honours should go to Bazza and the others, who tried to patch the glaring issues Kunos never wanted to fix because "Oh, we have ACC now!".

    You should try the 67 mod from Simdream for Assetto. It s a musthave just for the sound of the brm's V16 :love: . But for the global package and all the details (screens, design of marshall near track, green lights, flags, etc), i prefer grand prix legends vs assetto.
