  • Despite all the fantastic mods that are available many drivers still swear by the original 1967 cars with the Papyrus physics. This video is an introduction guide for new players who want to know more about the differences between the seven different manufacturers.
The following sources were used for additional information:
Into the Red - The race cars:
    intothered.dk/simracing/cars.html
GPL Cars Data Spreadsheet by Art-J:
    srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=1...
All footage was recorded at Grand Prix Legends's default 36 fps with Bandicam. Driven with a Fanatec ClubSport V2.5 wheelbase and CSL Elite LC pedalset.

Outstanding video! I own every single F1 sim available and, for me, NOTHING can equal the terrifying thrill of wheel-to-wheel racing in GPL. Thanks, Erik!

    Excellent video, Erik.
Very useful information, should hopefully help bring some new people in.

Great info. About how I felt when I started playing GPL. The Cooper quickly became my 'training wheels car ' and the Lotus did NOT yield world record times for me, despite it being the 'best' car, haha.

Jochen Rindt drove that heavy, not so very competitive Cooper Maserati. The Golden Era of Formula 1 with the greatest drivers the sport possibly ever had. Thanks for uploading!

wow this is so cool! i modeled all these cars except for the lotus when i worked at papyrus (i didn't do the 2D textures as we had some talented 8bit 2d artists for that)... it took ages since we were using bsp trees. we had to use them because gpus were just recently introduced them.

Great video and, like in your summary video of the '65 carset, I LOVE the distinctive theme music for each car. And that it doesn't drown out the wonderful engine sounds.

Thank you very much for the video. This will help my progress in the GPL and at the same time improve the quality of my game series. I am going to test the Cooper, as I am a beginner. I was suffering with Lotus.

Great video! You should do the same with some others mods. BTW I don't agree with you at 5:13 about describing the 6 gears as a issue since having one more gear means extra engine brake and higher revs at each gear change since the single gears results a bit less longer. :)

    Excellent video Erik! :)
But a couple of personal notes: to me Cooper and Ferrari are the best beginner cars, they have the best (neutral) handling. Also BRM and Honda are actually quite hard early race, because of their fuel consumption, being much heavier than the competition.

It would be so cool if some game studio out there decided to make a spiritual successor to this awesome sim.

It's a VDO that I've been looking for.
    It's a very useful VDO. I like this game and the 60th - 70th F1 cars.
    thank you

An excellent summary of legendary cars.
Another reason that beginners may prefer the Cooper or the Ferrari is engine reliability.
My impression, after decades of enjoying GPL, is that the Eagle Weslake and the Lotus Cosworth engines are a little 'fragile'. They are both more prone to damage if over revved and maybe more so if you thrash them while still cold at the start of a race?
It's another beautiful subtlety built in by Papyrus.

Yeah, I also started with the Coventry/Cooper and advanced to the Westlake.
Never got anywhere with the Lotus. The car fights you every inch of the track. You can do lap records in it fine, but having an hour long race with it, it will slowly leach you out.
The BRM has a very forgiving handling, snap oversteer only occured to me near brake locking. You have to go a little easier on the brakes, true. But with the correct shifting it literally straightens itself coming out of corners afterwards.

In the RA300 segment you're driving in the RA273 skin.
P.S. Where did you get that engine sound? I haven't heard it before. I never drove the Honda in the 2004 demo - is it from there?

When you get to the BRM you’re showing the BRM P83 and not the BRM P115. The P115 made its debut at the Nurburgring and was meant to be a more nimble and streamlined evolution of the heavy and cumbersome P83, which is noted by the outboard radiator pipes. The P83 originally debuted at Monaco in 1966, but Stewart chose to contest the race in the P261 instead.
When you get to the Honda you’re showing the RA273 and not the RA300. Although both chassis’ used the same 48-valve v12 engine, the RA273 was the car Surtees drove for most of the ‘67 season with the RA300 debuting at Monza later in the season and winning its maiden outing by beating Brabham in the BT24 to the finish line by just 0.2 seconds. The RA300 remains the only F1 car to win its maiden outing by leading less than one lap.

      Cooper was Coventry.
The 4 wheel drift book by Steve Smith (Came with the game) had loads of interesting bits... Ferrari was a bit backward with granting permission so the chapter on Ferrari 312 was left out just in case Ferrari got a bit happy with the lawyers. I think you can find it on the interwebs somewhere.

    • @ErikGPL
      @ErikGPL  5 лет назад +2

Yes, I also remember a story of the car on the cover actually being a Brabham BT24 that was made to look like a Ferrari at the last moment. For the Coventry I can sort of understand the replacement name, but Murasama and Honda sounds much less obvious to me.

Yamura would have been cool from the Film Grand Prix...
Maybe Yamura - to Murasama seems better
