The all-new Hyundai i30 N is finally here...but can it best one of the best in the segment, the Volkswagen Golf GTI?

All the people whining about the Hyundai having more power than the GTI should remember....that's the point! i30N gives you superior performance over the GTI for the same price. Then the VW fans here say, "oh, let's see how it does against the Golf R!" Yeah sure! But it's also almost 20K more expensive. Not in the same price bracket at all.
the R would win the drag race. 4.6 sec to 60mph. Kia Stinger 4.9sec

That's only in a straight line. The i30 does not handle that well in the corners. Understeers like a b*tch

I wouldn't say the Stinger is twice the car, and again you are comparing apples and oranges John. I've raced both at the ATCO dragway, and the R beats the Stinger every time (inflated Stinger 0-60 me thinks) But there is some good news for wannabe Stinger buyers. With the absolutely appalling depreciation on Hyundai products in the US, if you want a Stinger and wait a few years you could buy a used one for 80 cents.

The best thing is the i30n has 5 years warranty and the gti only two here in Germany.
And the warranty isn't void if you take i30N to the track - they still honor it! Unlike VW.
Gti has 6 years and 72k miles.
For everyone saying put it against a golf R, NO they are matched because of their prices

I love what Hyundai is doing with their cars. Being realistic I won't be able to afford an i30n or gti, I'll be looking for an i30 sr or Elantra sr. But props to these guys hopefully this will start a war in the hot hatch world and the only winners will be is the consumer.

On safety tests Hyundai is better than Golf GTI...
On Hyundai you get 5 years warranty with no limit on kilometers...
And Hyundai is a very good brand... they improved their cars very much in the last 10 years or maybe more...
So, in my opinion, stop comparing only the sport result and open your eyes and see also the other advantages because you pay the money and you work for that money.
And stop thinking that VW is the best car or much better than other brands like Hyundai, Toyota, etc, because is not! It is far away from these ones, and I am telling you from my experience... I drove more then 40 cars last year and I drove VW, Honda, Toyota, Kia, Ford, Hyundai, Mazda, Opel, Seat, Skoda, Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Lexus, Renault, Peugeot, Volvo... and others... and for example I found much more quality and comfort in Seat than in VW... and also other people saw that... So forget about these ideas of Golf IV and just try to see the reality... Golf IV is not a safe car anymore... etc...

fake jake depends where you buy these cars, in Canada the Golf R is 42k fully loaded and the GTI fully loaded is 35k. Where the i30N is hovering at around 38k.

Mike Villiams I’m very aware of that, I was just stating that the gti looked a lot slower in comparison to the N, either way both not bad for their specs, it’s not easy to get a good launch and power to the road in a higher powered fwd

All this proves is that the i30n gets a better launch probably due to tyres. If you look at the trap speeds they are almost identical, in fact the golf is slightly higher. All this means is if you were to roll race the cars would be matched evenly. I don't understand the guys reaction to saying how fast the i30n is, the speeds are exactly the same for both cars.
i actually wanted to see a roll race between them to be honest!

I don't get why people are finding this surprising. Read the stats on the cars. However you don't specify which of the models you are drag racing. If you are putting the non performance Golf against the performance I30N there is an even bigger difference in power.

I have a 2018 focus st and im glad to see Hyundai bring this type of car to the market especially now that Ford will no longer sell the St line in the United States. Now all we will see from them is boring SUV's and Trucks. Keep it up Hyundai and im happy for all the Veloster owners out their.

Good on Hyundai for coming to the party and building a decent hot hatch however comparing it with a GTI is a bit off. In regards to acceleration there was always going to be a clear winner. The i30N is Hyundai's flagship hatch so pitch it against Volkswagen's flagship hatch the Golf R. Bang for buck the Hyundai will still prevail but I feel it would not compare as favourable in the other key areas.

For all these gti fanatics calling for the i30 N to take on a Golf R...catch a wake people and compare apples with apples. The i30 N is Hyundai's front wheel drive standard hot hatch pitted against VW's standard hot hatch a golf GTI, and it got smoked! How can you race a 4wd car against a front wheel drive car just isn't fair..maybe Hyundai should add AWD to this already awesome car and let's see what it does to the Golf R...Hyundai's rule great value for money and warranties.
GTI isn't the fastest from stock, STI, and RS beat it, but I don't take it to the track, I drive it around town and to work. The GTI not only looks better than all those cars but the interior isn't just junk China plastic, there was actual thought put in to the GTI, that's why I bought one, not to race people with a stock car.
I have had 2 GTIs before the one I have now, and not a single problem with any of them. Every car manufacturer has cars that take shits, the Focus has head gasket problems, the STI, turbo problems, and this new car from Hyundai will show its problems soon enough, no car is perfect, you just have to hope YOUR car doesn't have the problem.

Sorry yeah 4 & 5 and yes I agree Japanese are way better built for the long run I lease vehicles so I don’t really ever worry about how reliable anything is lol I also jump between brands not a loyalist by any means I have a 17 GTI sport right now and I love it for everyday driving and it’s still fun enough but I had a 15 WRX thats was a lot more fun that I’d pick over any German car

Bit of an unfair race, the Hyundai had 45hp on the Golf and only won by 0.4s. The GTI had a higher finishing speed as well so maybe the GTI wins the 1/2 mile? A fair race would be the GTI clubsport vs i30N and I can guarantee the GTI Clubsport would win both the 1/4 mile and 1/2 mile. The i30N is a lovely car, very quick and very good looking but even though the VW lost I think it's the better car.

You can be 100% sure they won't. It's against Hyundai's policy. They wanna make a most fun car and not a fastest race winner one. Anyway AWD makes the car expensive, heavy and complicated. Gloomy not to rain on your parade but the whole unreliable VW myth is dead. I've had 3 vw's(1999 VW Passat manual, a 2005 GTI manual and now a 17' GTI-manual). No issues other than regular maintenance for all cars in question and all have had aftermarket tuning done. What I have seen to be a trend for the past couple years is car dealerships and vloggers comparing all hot hatches to the GTI, lol. You can't remain#1 for ever but it's funny how the GTI is the car chosen to compare there car against.
I like the Hyundai hatch. It's a cool car, to bad it wasn't slated for the US yet.

Unless VW is putting in a huge effort...this victory will stay even after Mk8 is launched. If the only thing they are going to do is increase power, i30N will still be the better driver's car. It's not just the power difference that made me buy the i30N. It's the better chassis, the sharper steering, the much better gearbox, the standard equipment, the sound, etc. VW has A LOT of work to do if they want to beat that by next year.

First off, GTi has 220 hp and a DSG equiped. Second: 0.4 seconds? Are you looking at a different vid? There is more than a whole second between the 2 at the end. And if you are refering to 0-60 time, half a second is a lot. On top of that the i30N isn't build for straight line performance and it showed that on Top Gear. It lapped the TG track 5 seconds faster than the GTi. You ending your reaction with 'it looks like a shit Kia' only shows what a badgesnob idiot you are. Kia are putting out more original designs and better looking cars than VW who have been copying themselves for the past 15 years btw.
Really unfair comparison, 275hp, it’s between a Golf GTI 220hp and Golf R 310hp. Golf R DSG 0-60 4.6 would easily beat the i30 N at 0-60 6.1, the GTI 0-60 6.4, hence the marginal difference in your vid.

if 50-70% of hyundai N’s can take a turbo upgrade (See “IS38”)
with minimal supporting mods, and make mid 400 crank HP numbers without reliability issues, then lunch is on me....
Currently at 35k miles with the EA888 engine on 26lbs of boost, with bolt ons.

Not even close, Hyundai N FTW! Albert Biermann, formaly the head of BMWs M division is the man behind the N models for Hyundai (& kia -Stinger). He knows his stuff. Expect even more in the near future.

People need to get their facts straight. A VW Golf R is the same price as the Hyundai i30n, at least in South Africa. The gti is about $10,000 cheaper. The hyundai is AWD and is 202kw and sells at $41,000+-. The VW Golf 7.5 R is AWD and is 206kw and sells at $39,000-40,000 depending on options you get. The VW Golf GTi is FWD at 162kw and sells at $27,000-30,000. You can't compare a AWD to a FWD in a race, especially when it comes to a 1/4 mile race
The hyundai i30N is FWD just like the GTi. If the hyundai was AWD it wouldve been even faster.

What I see is price X vs price X - so for they money, I would always pick i30N over VW.
When budget is not an issue, that's a different story but for the same buck, you would have to be a badge snob to chose VW.

I'm not biased to the i30 N, but if the golf had similar spec tires etc and it was a more even race i still bet the i30 N would beat it. Sure it would catch up a bit. But if u look at the distance that golf was and the times. It just wouldn't beat it. I think we should just give credit to Hyundai for getting ex BMW guy on-board and producing a really great hatch.

Would have liked you to drive the GTI vs the N afterwards. Because on paper these cars arent that far apart like this race shows. That GTI driver had bad launches and bad shifts. Good marketing but I don't believe the results especially considering how the GTI is so under powered.
Wouldn't a better comparison be the i30SR vs the Golf GTI, and the i30N vs the Golf R?

Golf driver didn't seem to be pushing it looking at the video. It does not feel right in this race at all

Hyundai really stepped up their game. I still like VW more though. Not sure how well the Hyundai responds to mods or if there is much for aftermarket. I plan on upgrading if I get a gti or golf r to APR stage 2. DSG transmission.

ImyurZerio - never heard of hot-hatch customers being concerned with interior quality. 0-60 times - every damn time. Corner agility? Every damn time. I guess quality of plastics is the only argument GTi has left :P Apply cold water to burned places.

The cars are not even build for the same purpose. The i30n is Hyundai's performance Hatch Back, they don't do a more powerful version of the i30. The GTI on the other hand ist just the middle ground for VW, there are other options available if you want raw performance. If you are just looking for straight line performance, sure go for the i30n. But keep in mind a few things: The GTI is the more comfortable daily driver, it will not depreciate as quickly, it has more room for passengers and and an overall higher build quality. There is no real comparison here, as they are fundamentally differnt cars.

Yes, its about the U.S. and our insanely strict smog laws, just cause it was somehow exploded when the news came out about VW, but what about when GM had defeat devices installed in Caddys in the 90's? Or what about Ford and their defeat devices in their vans in the 90's? Or even Honda or Toyota in the 90's as well? Global warming wasn't a big deal back then, but now that it is suddenly we're taking it seriously, even though Mitsubishi came out shortly after VW got caught saying they were doing it too, but naw, everyone just put it all on VW.

Both brands are good. I'm a VW man and accept the win but if you wanna compare then let's leave the price out of the equation and put the best against the best and believe me the Clubsport S will win all the competitors.
