Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender) as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon's chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) forever alters his life.

    It so sad that a lot of people didn't live freely and like a human because of the color of their skin

      sometimes it didn't even matter about skin color. a lot of Irish and Chinese people were slaves as well in America. Just during different time periods

      No, the race riots mostly involved Irish. The government conducted interviews and found that the perpetrators were nearly all Irish.

      Middle Eastern (I'm not Muslim or Arab though). You can read the interviews which they conducted. It was written down and it's very interesting. But the link is very long, so I'm not going to bother giving it to you.
      In the interview it says that blacks dislike the Irish more than anyone. I have nothing against the Irish at all. I like Bobby Kennedy. He was a nice guy. I'm just stating the truth though.
      The Irish were accused by abolitionist for supporting slavery. The Irish didn't want the blacks to become free because it would mean that they would have to compete for labour, especially if a lot of blacks immigrated to the North after being freed.

      I'm anything but ulster loyalist. I know there's many black Americans who have Irish ancestry. Michelle Obama and Barack Obama being one of the most famous. However, the relationship between black Americans and Irish Americans has never been great. It's been far better in the Caribbean where many Irish were sent as indentured servants and were also treated really badly. For Instance the Jamaican accent has its roots in the Irish accent.

    im a black african man and this movie had me in tears. tears for the realities of the past, tears for the injustice of the present and tears for the leaders of the future. i see it crystal clear now, like the sun sitting in the sky on a clear day. i finally see the vision of the later nelson Mandela the only way we can get over the past, is to forgive it. the only way to over come evil is to let goodness flourish. it is not easy being black but it is a opportunity to teach the world to do better and be better, being black allows you to show others what it really looks like to forgive and promote peace. people died to afford us the opportunity for equality and not reverse oppression.

    A lot of people really don't understand how bad American slavery was. This wasn't regular old world slavery, this was chattel slavery, you were born a slave, you died a slave, your children died slaves, and your children's children died slaves. You could never hope to be anything but a slave. We have never come to terms with our demons as a country. Slavery lasted 245 years officially, and after all was said and done, slaves and children of slaves never got any kind of mental help (and go figure, mental health became a huge taboo in the AA community), no official apology, and not even a single day of recognition for their suffering. It was like America just wanted to make it all go away as a country, ignore it, change the subject, and now we are paying the price of our actions.

    • @romperstompist
      @romperstompist 9 лет назад +62

      What do you mean by "old world slavery" and how was it different in regards to being born a slave, dieing a slave, and birthing slaves?

    • @u-n-isurvive3030
      @u-n-isurvive3030 9 лет назад +281

      Well, societies have always had slavery, it was often a natural consequence when a nation conquered another nation. Roman slavery is often referred to as "old world slavery", but "new world" (i.e. the Americas) slavery was really the first time the world had seen a systemic institution where an entire group of people were forced into slavery for generations with no hope of ever rising to a position of power, by virtue of simply fitting a certain phenotype. It was the first time the world had seen the use of racial classifications to justify the subordination of a people, and it was the first time where a society was almost entirely dependent on slave labor in order to function (hence needing ways to justify it's use). The slaves literally were the economy. The southern states could sell cotton and tobacco cheaper than any other competitor, because they didn't have to pay their workers, and the didn't have to worry about them quitting. The wealth created during that 245 year time period was astronomical.

    Slavery was one of the most awful things of humanity. But I would like a film about native americans abuse, they were killed, abused and have no rights until now. In their own land. It's a disgusting word and how they used it against black people saddens me. People wonder why black people act quite hostile and aggressive nowadays and always use the racist card. But I think we all would if we ever knew what their people went through. I mean why does having black skin colour make them less than any other person with lighter skin?! Some people said this movie only won Best Picture because it deals with racism and slavery, but here’s the thing: it didn’t just win because it’s a film with important subject matter, it won because it’s a great movie. This film IMO 100% deserved to win Best Picture, anybody who says otherwise is a hater. It’s a true masterpiece of cinema, it’s hard to watch and depressing, but it’s a well-crafted, brilliant, and essential film that should be required viewing. Everyone should see this amazing movie and never forget.

      Well, I'm certainly not a hater, especially since our one son has a, (as my wife puts it, ''A Child Of Color'')
      I argue with her all the time because I've always felt that when a person says, A Person Of Color, it's pretty much like saying, Colored People... I mean that's my opinion anyways... But hey, if I'm wrong, so far no one has corrected me...
      At any rate, I certainly hope that one day everyone in this country will start acting like we are all Brothers and Sisters, and also Americans...
      As for this movie, I just figured that as long as it won at least 1 award, then cool, because it was a pretty good movie... But there's like only 75 or 80 people that decide what Actors, and/or Movies will win The Academy Award, so with that said, I believe that there's a lot of folks that get screwed out of receiving an award, least we not forget, Hollywood is a pretty fucked up place...

    For the white people or anyone saying "this wasn't me" "I have nothing to do with this", no. We ALL have EVERYTHING to do with this. Every race, ethnicity, whatever has EVERYTHING to do with this. We must all learn from the past to ensure that the past will never return to be repeated. We are all one. No matter which part of the world, outside America whatever. We are all in ONE world. We must stick together and unite as ONE. Or be sure that the past WILL repeat itself. Only worse.

      Slavery started in Africa. Your own government sold the Europeans slaves. They then brought them to THE Americas and forced them to build the European empires, which was the US. They had no use for Native Americans because they died from Europeans diseases and/or went back to their village. Africans were immune to the diseases and couldn't run back to their village so that's why they used Africans instead.

    • @ImanWangui97
      @ImanWangui97 4 года назад +7

      @may nostyl is right.
      We were made slaves in our own countries. East African countries were colonized from the beginning of 1890s. Our ancestors went through alot of unimaginable horrors. Am a Kenyan and my grandfather would always tell us how it was before we got our independence, not in great details and never graphically ofcourse because of the content but we got the gist of the stories combined with what we learnt in school. It was horrific to say the least.
      These types of movies try to explain to an audience what happened with 12 years a slave as an example but they can never disclose or act out everything because it was truly that barbaric.
      On a side note, if I were to critic I'd say that this is not how Africans spoke. Most of them were West Africans so the dialect used would be pijin English, and it would be broken since they were uneducated.
      With all said, this does not take away the fact that the story told is about the Africans that were sold as slaves and the horrors they had to go through in another man's land. This is a story told from their perspective and we must honor that.
      So @Edwin Fanice please do learn your history well enough because our ancestors were enslaved and colonized.

    The fact that some people had to live their entire lifespan which was around 21 years at average, working long hours, barely getting happiness, no freedom, just for their skin colour and physical capabilities just shows how lucky we are to live in a world where that has gotten abolished and is now illegal, there still are slaves out there, my prayers to them and hopefully they get rescued or liberated!

    This is one of those movies where you just sit down and watch without moving, feeling totally frozen until the end. The fact that it´s based on true events makes it 10 times heavier to watch. There is absolutly no way to apologize for what my race has done to the african american people. Slavery is by far ONE of the worst things that humans have ever done to their brothers and sisters. To say one human is worth less then the other just because of his skin colour is ridiculous.

    This movie really broke my heart. It's sickens me how society was back in that era...Some white people were so sadistic and ruthless with slaves, and from what I saw in the movie, they received pleasure from the pain. Many of the scenes were too disturbing to watch...But I'm glad this movie came out to expose those who treated others monstrously then and how society is united now.

      dax Africans' slaves were not tortured and treated less than humans. They lived in the same house with their masters, slept under the same roof, ate the same food. They were to be set free at a certain time, so don't compare this to American slavery and there is African history that you can study. Your people invaded the continent and took most of the slave. The ones that were sold by other Africans were prisoners of war. But their number is negligible compared to the village that were deserted due to slave masters invasion. Don't even try to lie here or quote a slave master's account because liars is what they all are to me.

    • @kevinduh6814
      @kevinduh6814 10 лет назад +3

      dax What you are saying is technically correct; African slaves were often bought by Europeans from other Africans. However, as Glenda pointed out, Africans envisioned slavery very differently from the form it took in the New World. Slavery in Africa and as it existed throughout the Old World, including Western empires like Rome, was not a birthmark. It was a liminal state, often as a result of capture during war. The virulence of the racism that we have come to define slavery by was created in part to justify the brutality of slavery in the Americas. This film is not trying to place blame. No one is doubting the sacrifices your family may have made for this country and yes, for anyone who says otherwise, the Civil War was fought over the issue of slavery and of the 600,000 white Americans who laid down their lives in that conflict, many died for that cause. 12 Years isn't trying to simplify history--it's trying to remind us that we cannot simply talk about slavery as a redemptive history. It is also a criminal history. American cinema tends to gloss over that fact and reduce slavery and emancipation to white men in courtrooms and state houses talking out the problem. Here, McQueen introduces a new wrinkle to that narrative.

    The way they made this movie is so heavy but honestly a GREAT movie. In school slavery has always been a touchy subject. Just the fact that i grew up around Black family while i was younger ( no im not black but grew up in a black/latino church, we all family)
    So once i got older and learned about slavery that shit is heartbreaking. I still dont understand how people could just torture a living human being just for the color of their skin, like this man was KIDNAPPED . I see it today happening, not literal slavery but they get looked at different when going in the store or walking around like WTF?! It pistes me off. But i just pray God heals everyone from this sickness and gives us PEACE.
