- Explore the history of court jesters, from 7th century China to medieval Europe, and how they were able to speak truth to power.
--
Contrary to common belief, jesters weren’t just a medieval European phenomenon but flourished in other times and cultures. The first reliably recorded jester is thought to be You Shi, of 7th century BCE China. Jesters had unique relationships to power: they could be viewed as objects of mockery or as entertainers and trusted companions. Beatrice K. Otto digs into history's most infamous jokers.

It fascinates me how a significant part of history can be described by saying, "The Monarch is very sensitive, so we hired this funny man to give him all bad news and criticism"
The United States harasses victims of deviant sadistic maltreatment by military Child SA’ers who are misusing advanced technology they have access to.
They are using technology that is meant to keep Americans safe to secretly watch children, show them deviant content through hacking their devices, and touch them inappropriately or give them incapacitating substances. Victims of this crime are R’d, and tortured and then as they get older are then stalked and harassed both on and offline by creeps that are helping their friends get away with their crimes.
They sabotage the lives of their victims to make them as hellish as possible.
This goes on for years, and it seems to last their entire lives.
Some victims may not even know they’re victims because much of the R happens when they are slipped something or asleep. The only reason you may know is because they may leave behind physical evidence like bodily fluids, bruises, or scratches.
The men who do this think that they can shame their victims into silence because some of the actions are coerced. They think that the more depraved they can be with innocent children the more likely they will be too ashamed to speak out. At least some men with access to this technology are using to hurt and R children. The victims are left with little recourse because they likely won’t know who R’d them. They try to invade every part of their victims' lives to try to shame and mock them into silence.
Honestly though, that’s kinda like best friends talking(not the best comparison, but it’s the best one I could come up with)
@mahapatrasohamm honestly, i can't think of a better modern-day comparison other than "dennis rodman and kim jong un"
not alot has changed huh, other than the hiring part
If 99% of jester's jokes are not in the expense of emperors, then this video would be pretty misleading. Focusing on an unrepresentative aspect of a subject, is a misleading way to teach the subject.
Honestly its a travesty that modern day politicians dont have jesters, it would probably help a lot
They already make fools of themselves enough not to need any.
I guess we have late night comedians for that.

It's nice to know that the "No offense, it's just a joke" bs has a noble history.
To be fair jesters often insulted their tyrannical, self important bosses, so I'd say it's more a case of "Screw the 1%"
I mean to be fair they are not only asking for it but paying for it
@@trappedcosmos The taxpayers are paying for it.
@@Sonny_McMacssonWell, no. These weren't democratic governments claiming to represent the people. These were aristocratic lords, demanding payment, labour and military service for the "service" of "protecting" and "leading" their subjects. The money wasn't a tax as we currently understand it, but legal payment for their role within the systems of manorialism and vassalage. In other words, it was very much their money.

Its very intresting the history of Jester. I heard stories of people asking for the Jester to give the bad news to king, because, the knew he could escape the punishment.
Henry 8's jester specially about 5th wife
Cuz jester usually sandwiched a criticism in warmth tone for the ruler to chew.....like you put bitter pill into pet food for a dog to eat
I remember a tale of how after a French Defeat to (guess who) the English where the sailosr jumped off their ships, some nobles had the jester say:
Jester: Oh, those cowardly, cowardly English.
King: How are they cowardly?
Jester: They do not DARE jump off their ships like our brave, French soldiers.

I'm shocked you haven't mentionned that Jesters often were advisors to the rulers. Like famous polish Jester Stańczyk, who also acted as advisor to Polish king Sigismund I.
They briefly touched on it when mentioning on Jesters are both ridiculed, praised, and looked for advice.
@@conejitorosada2326 Yes, but what they don't say, that jesters often acted as diplomats, and even spies!
Is that the same Jester in that famous painting called Stanczyk that people made memes of?
@@elisabethschmerzler963 The Very Same, although the painter, Jan Matejko lived 300 years after Stańczyk, so it's more of an idealized vision, rather than actual portrait. It’s fascinating that as long as they said it in a funny way, a jester could say pretty whatever they wanted. Jesters are often viewed as lower court members, who only exists to be laughed at. Jesters are basically ancient internet trolls
Yep
In germany there is the term "Narrenfreiheit" which explicibly invokes the right of jesters to say anything without repurcussions.
Indeed in castle Eltz several families shared the seat. If there was some interfamiliar conflict the issue would be discussed in a special room with painted jester faces above each chair. Showing that within this room everyone was allowed to say anything
These animations get better and better!
Yes. The relationship between politics, comedy and jesters is age old. That's why Victor Hugo's novel 'The Man Who Laughs' is so powerful because Hugo used this very concept to criticise the dukes of Paris. The Man who Laughs is also prime inspiration for 'Joker' from Batman comics, whose various interpretations have portrayed him as a critic of the modern society or the "established order". And this is also a reason why a lot of contemporary comedy is so critical of the political scenario. Because if you are gonna tell people that they are getting screwed over, you might as well make them laugh while you're at it.

I hate to be another stereotypical guy but I kind of want to watch more videos on medieval society. When you think about it, it’s a really downplayed time in history. I really don’t remember too much education in high school, or any interestingly-put content at least. But the French found it hard to pronounce the th sound so pronounced þ letter so instead made a y sound
