- Get to know the life of Mexican nun, poet and scholar, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, who was censored by the Church for her critical writings.
--
Juana Ramírez de Asbaje sat before a panel of prestigious theologians, jurists, and mathematicians. They had been invited to test Juana’s knowledge with the most difficult questions they could muster. But she successfully answered every challenge, from complicated equations to philosophical queries. Who was this impressive woman? Theresa Yugar details the life of the Mexican poet and scholar.

She should be big Everywhere historically.
True History is always not taught like it should in school
yea, its super big in México, and US people are not famous for being knowledgable on other countries' history, not even your closest neighbors'.
No, she is one of the biggest classics of latinoamericana barroque if not the biggest one, and a really prominent name in Hispanic literature. Also the whole situation with the archbishop has been simplified a lot.
I learned about her in the USA. In high school.
Here a piece of the poem shown in the video:
"You foolish men who lay
the guilt on women,
not seeing you're the cause
of the very thing you blame;
if you invite their disdain
with measureless desire
why wish they well behave
if you incite to ill.
You fight their stubbornness,
then, weightily,
you say it was their lightness
when it was your guile."

As a fact, in Mexico City, there’s a university with her name, “Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana” (Sor Juana’s Cloister University). This institution is one of the best to study Art History and Gastronomy in all Mexico. This complex was a cloister, inaugurated in 1623, in here, Sor Juana stayed most of her life writing and learning, alongside other nuns. It was in 1971, when it was declared a national patrimony and eight years later it became a university, which is still in function.
This was a short version behind the history of this historical building, hope you liked it. Have a nice life. ♥️
That's pretty cool, would have been even better if it taught things she aspired to learn, what was it again? mathamatics being one of them?
Asides from Art History and Gastronomy, there is also Literature and Creative Writing, Theatre, Psychology, Law, Philosophy, and other varied human rights and culture grads. I would've loved to study there but it's a private institution and is rather costly.

Dario Castaneda, the problem here is not about teaching or not Sor Juana's work (because they do teach it in a large scale in Mexico), it is about teaching values and how to find and incorporate in our lives the actual lessons that history leaves us. As someone who was raised in the Mexican educational system, I can tell that it is not designed for creating this kind of principles at all. Mexico has a misogynist and violent culture which causes go way beyond a failed education system; even if the education programes improved, teachers and guidance from the family play a major role in what children learn. Thus, a history class with essential lessons like gender equality is not enough to orient an entire generation towards a better and fairer world.

Nope, you’ve got it exactly backwards. It was an act of humility, of her killing her pride, not reinforcing it as you imagine.
“Obedience. The most thrilling word in the world; a very thunderclap of a word. Why do all these fools fancy that the soul is only free when it disagrees with the common command? Why should mere disagreement make us feel free? I know you are fond of dancing; do you want to dance to a different tune from your partner’s? You are a fine horsewoman; do you want to think of walking northward all by yourself, when you and your horse are going southward together? You have called me a nun; I am not a nun, I am not good enough to be a nun. I do not . . . I have not set . . . (She breaks off the sentence.) But do you suppose that nuns are unhappy? I never see them pass, silent and hooded, through their quiet cloisters but I have a vision: a vast vision of Amazons, wilder than any heathen Valkyries, riders rushing into battle; a charge of chivalry going all one way, and every rider as free as Joan of Arc; galloping, galloping to God. That is the real vision of Obedience.”

That’s a shame. She was an intellectual individual and a kind sister. Overall a great person, too bad the era wasn’t on her side. Damn.
The greatest minds often conflict with the societies in which they live. Galileo, Aristotle, her, the list goes on and on. Very rarely are they accepted and their intelligence recognized.
And that's important. If everyone already knew that the Earth orbited the Sun and not the other way around, then Galileo would have just been another random person in history. The same case with all the scholars, artists, and other historical figures who gained their fame because of their conflict with society. This is because the reason that these people make these achievements in the first place is because they want to correct the wrongs of their society. @Real Communism Perhaps the men who ran the institutions shouldn't have banned women from higher education. You can't break someone's leg and then get mad at them for not coming first in a race.
Real Communism the main reason why women usually didn’t get Nobel peace prizes was because they normally couldn’t do anything to get one. They were often forced to stay at home to take care of children, or be nurses or nuns. Only lucky few were able to go to college to get a higher education. Plus, a lot of women did make amazing discoveries that could have been Nobel peace prize awarded. But, their work was often taken and men would claim it as their own. Honestly I was expecting some cold-blooded serial killer level nun and the comment section flooded with enlightened fedora-tipping atheists going "But that's all nuns". I was wrong
Same
me too! :D
Same. And... Honestly... Iam not disappointed
Nun is human, religion is not. Just because I don’t like the concept, it doesn’t mean ppl who practise the concept are bad. Atheist here.
Me too
How much more advanced would humanity be if men hadn't been like this? So many geniuses were not allowed to contribute just because they were women
That is true. But I would like to add that it's not just the men who stop women from achieving their potential. Us women also contribute to it, by putting up with such behaviour, or many a times, pulling other women down. If all women stood together, no man would dare threaten us.
True that.....
PrettyMoonLady why you acting it’s all men’s fault.....and how all men are like this.
ok boomer
It is us, the worst men’s fault
I was so worried this was about a murderous nun. But she is an ICON and needs to be remembered!
Whenever my school/work gets to be too much, I remember how much Sor Juana fought and how much I admire her for it. She is my inspiration and my idol 💜
My grandmother was from a small village, but she loved reading and read all the books in the school's library and even borrowed books from her teachers. She wanted to become a teacher or a librarian, but her parents didn't allow her and sent her to study trade. Even now at 72 years old, she has a bitter smile when she talks about it. Never limit your children, regardless of gender
underrated.

As a Muslim married man and a father born and educated in the UK/London I found her story to be sheer bliss even though she had a different faith from mine. She had everything at her feet if she ever wanted but choose the righteous path. Peace and blessings unto her, Amen/Ameen !
perfectly put
I’ll tell you something that will surprise you: most like, if she had lived in our times I don’t think she would’ve been a nun and even further, I don’t think she would’ve been Catholic.
Juana de Asbaje wanted academic education. She was an intellectual.
She knew she was capable of geniality, just as men. But in her times women did not have the right for education and, the only way for her get it would be if she became a nun.
Knowing the fierceful passion she had for defending women rights, I don’t think she would’ve have supported Catholicismeither
Great video, thank you!
As they say, well-behaved women seldom made history.
@Hernando Malinche care to share what they're all about
@Hernando Malinche were they well behaved women?
You really missed a top comment there, the playlist about women in history on Ted-ed's channel is called "Well-behaved women seldom make history"
Is it bad to be well behaved now? You could be a hoose wife with 4 kids and make things like clothing and a good business. Many other things.
@@zuhayrah that's not the context in which "well-behaved" is used here. Well-behaved women of the past weren't simply women with proper etiquette, they were women who were forced to submit to and confined by societal norms of their time. They had to go against the accepted ways of life back then, hence making history by not being "well-behaved."
"history is also a product of her work" that gave me goosebumps

I was expecting a much darker story but this is just amazing to know
Really, how come she isn't a disney princess yet??? That's the kind of role models we need!
Indeed
I haven't kept up with Disney the last several decades but are they even doing princess movies without a love interest? A heroine as serious as Juana would be pretty hard to trivialize. I don't think Disney would be interested.

@@dontaylor7315 they have Brave. And the heroine did not have love interest in that movie. Although her parents tried to arrange her into a marriage to other tribe.

Wow, a great vid, I stumbled on by accident but what a surprise.
They forgot to mention that when the bishop told her to focus on prayer he wrote it under a female pen name to make it sound like it was coming from another nun and after it all went down they also made her get rid of all her books and musical instruments :(

Juana is amazing, but let’s give some credit to Dõna Isabel. Managed two estates successfully despite being illiterate in this time period while being a single mom of 3? No wonder Juana ended up so amazing, her mom was a queen
she did not enter the order b/c she wanted to be go to school. She entered the order because she wanted to serve God. All else came and she was able to do all she did because she was allowed. She had to ask for permission and this she knew when she entered the Carmelite order. She was obedient. if the church would have denied her what she asked for she would definitely would obey. So she was not a rebel. this is false. innacurate. go and learn what the order of the carmelite's was all about. this is misinformation. Trying to re-write history again eh
