Happened upon this video - we used to study this song and the way Judy sang it in Music class in Massachusetts..... The way her mouth moves, the sounds change, different keys, different emotions per word. She's amazing and she should be studied forever.....I learn new techniques every time I see her perform......what a legend.

Ever since BKR did her video on Judy performing at Carnegie Hall, I have become obsessed , I have to admit Judy was never a singer I looked at, but watching her sing The man that got away both on film and the TV broadcast. I've watched those two performances multiple times a day and am honestly captivated by her talent. So at 53 I am suddenly discovering Her and I have to admit she was a bonified entertainer, troubled and amazingly talented. The reason your comment clicked is because I've watched two performances and am going on to other songs as I venture forward and have noticed her little visual ticks, gestures that enable her as cues to what she needs to do to perform the song, more so than any other singer from that period. Just interested in how she used those tricks to be so great.😊

I understand what you're saying no I guess when I was a little kid I only thought of her from The wizard of Oz. But being a gay male I was lucky enough to discover her in my early twenties. There is a whole list of songs that I don't like to hear anybody sing but JG. She is a songwriter's dream. I have similar lists with other artists (Lady comes to mind with "What a Little Moonlight Can Do") but Garland's list is definitely the longest. Nobody sang Arlen like her for starters and that's about 6 songs right there plus a whole movie soundtrack 😂) and that's not even half my list. 😂 She is still the best even today. Nobody before or since has even approached her level of emotional infusion.
She didnt need fancy sets or special f/x to perform or use silly gimmicks. She only needed to her voice her sheer presence to own that stage. She certainly knows how to grab her audience by starting slow & steady then a minute or so before she finishes, She revs up blows everyone away. I find myself staring at her beautiful face. You're so right. She was SO amazing. I saw her in person six times just two years before she passed away, and just the way she made her entrance was spellbinding. I don’t think it’s all demeaning to say she sang as beautifully and naturally as a bird. There was a prominent music critic who wrote she had the most natural vocal production of any popular singer he’d heard - “bird like.” That beautiful sound an elephant makes when it trumpets - I can also hear that in Judy’s belting notes, especially the finale of “By Myself.” She was a true force of nature.

This was taped 7/7/63 & was the first show that was taped but the network aired it as show #8. They aired the Donald O'Connor show as the first show which was a mistake. Judy was live during this Show with Mickey and the way she belted this song out of the park was just incredible. Her facial expression and body language were Awesome. I think the show would've gotten even greater reviews if they used this to be the 1st episode and had TV viewers awestruck with her Old Man River number.

Putting her up against the hottest show on TV that was loved by kids, doomed her show. All they had to do change her time slot. Funny, people accused Barbra of being too emotional in her early days, and you complain that she is a technician. Which is it? She expresses her emotion differently that Judy, that doesn't mean it isn't just as honest.

Both are (or were) superlative singers, but I prefer Judy's version, as it seems more emotional and moving.
Very Classy presentation of this hot song. Judy looks great here, from the first show taped for her series, although not the first one aired. I love how her voice opens up as the song progresses. All the profile shots of her singing, shot from below, are really classics, showing a great singer just doing it.
I always smile when I see the little gesture she makes towards the revolving stage at the beginning. She hated it, and complained that it made her dizzy! I also love the moment at about 2'30" where she cracks open and lets you see right inside her. A transcendent moment. It reminds me of what the great director Elia Kazan said about Judy in his autobiography: "Judy Garland, at the end of her life, giving you flashes (by lightning, Hazlitt might have added, as he did of Kean) of her own life’s pain when she sang the pop-blues."

Your point is made obvious when one watches today's performers who rely on special effects, backup singers, strobe lighting, and other distractions that take attention away from their lack of talent. Modern audiences contribute to this camouflage when they clap and cheer while the singer is singing. Garland needed none of these crutches in order to perform. She had talent that could stand on its own. There are none like her anymore.

I am NOT a fan of Barbra's. She bore's me to near death. Judy on the other hand gets my blood flowing. She makes you feel, she makes you a part of her song. So Barbra makes me yawn and Judy makes my blood flow. I often think that the seats that Judy's audience is sitting in, come with seatbelts. I sometimes get disgusted when her audience doesn't stand. Lifelong fan. Love this song & the way she sings it. But I've always felt that Mort's music arrangement on this song didn't mesh with Judy's singing. I've always felt that they worked against each other. But that's just me.
No, it wasn't. I don't think this song was part of any movie. It was recorded by many great singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Eydie Gorme, Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett. It was also part of Judy's tracklist during her engagement at the Coconut Grove in 1959. You can find it in the Garland At The Grove album.
If this is from 1963 and Barbra's version is from her 1965 TV special, I guess we can assume that Barbra 'borrowed' a little from Judy on this one. It's impossible to judge which one is better.
I think this is the song Barbra forgot the words in her Central Park concert and it isn't included in the album or video and she wouldn't sing another concert until One Voice in the 80s because of that.

Judy was a singer in a class all her own. But here, she does what she does worst....mangle lyrics. Like Sinatra, she had a spectacular gift...and a disregard for the words as written, often making inferior "substitutions". And no comparison here to Streisand.....who sang this with a power and maturity that skyrocketed her career. Garland has some great moments here but Streisand builds the song like nothing I've ever heard.
Judy Garland has been known to forget lyrics and out of necessity make substitutions on the fly, but I think it's wrong to say she had "a disregard for the words as written." I think she's one of the few singers who revered the lyrics and the melodies as written and didn't set out to mess around with them. I doubt she enjoyed forgetting the words. And well... as far as "no comparison here to Streisand"...seems as if plenty of people are comparing them, and coming down on the side of Garland.

Funny, people accused Barbra of being too emotional in her early days, and you complain that she is a technician. Which is it? She expresses her emotion differently that Judy, that doesn't mean it isn't just as honest.

@Michael K Judy first sang it in (I believe) 1951 at the London Palladium. I know she sang it in 1958 at the Cocoanut Grove (the album "Garland at the Grove"). Streisand first recorded it in 1962. Both are (or were) superlative singers, but I prefer Judy's version, as it seems more emotional and moving.
Very Classy presentation of this hot song. Judy looks great here, from the first show taped for her series, although not the first one aired. I love how her voice opens up as the song progresses. All the profile shots of her singing, shot from below, are really classics, showing a great singer just doing it.

I always smile when I see the little gesture she makes towards the revolving stage at the beginning. She hated it, and complained that it made her dizzy! I also love the moment at about 2'30" where she cracks open and lets you see right inside her. A transcendent moment. It reminds me of what the great director Elia Kazan said about Judy in his autobiography: "Judy Garland, at the end of her life, giving you flashes (by lightning, Hazlitt might have added, as he did of Kean) of her own life’s pain when she sang the pop-blues."

Absolutely love what Judy does with this song. One of my all time favorite performances by Judy.A Great Great Talent! Heard that Anne Hathaway has been cast in the film version of Judy's life. Really? Anne Hathaway can't touch this, she can't even come close.

Your point is made obvious when one watches today's performers who rely on special effects, backup singers, strobe lighting, and other distractions that take attention away from their lack of talent. Modern audiences contribute to this camouflage when they clap and cheer while the singer is singing. Garland needed none of these crutches in order to perform. She had talent that could stand on its own. There are none like her anymore.

Have to say I agree wholeheartedly with you. Streisand may be a good singer but she just leaves me cold when she sings, whereas I feel the emotion coming out of Judy's voice which literally gives me goosebumps.

I am NOT a fan of Barbra's. She bore's me to near death. Judy on the other hand gets my blood flowing. She makes you feel, she makes you a part of her song. So Barbra makes me yawn and Judy makes my blood flow. I often think that the seats that Judy's audience is sitting in, come with seatbelts. I sometimes get disgusted when her audience doesn't stand. Then I realized that once in awhile her audience needs to rest. Judy is the absolute best EVER, PERIOD, END OF DISCUSSION.

No, it wasn't. I don't think this song was part of any movie. It was recorded by many great singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Eydie Gorme, Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett. It was also part of Judy's tracklist during her engagement at the Coconut Grove in 1959. You can find it in the Garland At The Grove album.
Barbra did this song on Ed Sullivan very early in her career and it was SPECTACULAR. I go back and forth and I'm leaning to Barbra lately.
Babs version is better maybe but I feel like Judy's is just so amazing. It's like comparing the American Flag with fireworks on July 4th.
If this is from 1963 and Barbra's version is from her 1965 TV special, I guess we can assume that Barbra 'borrowed' a little from Judy on this one. It's impossible to judge which one is better.

I think this is the song Barbra forgot the words in her Central Park concert and it isn't included in the album or video and she wouldn't sing another concert until One Voice in the 80s because of that.

Judy wa s NEVER a sad person. She gave her full herself even in her last months.
There's no comparison. Both had/have their own unique styles but Judy gave more, she was genuine and down to earth with pure, honest emotion.
Judy was a singer in a class all her own. But here, she does what she does worst....mangle lyrics. Like Sinatra, she had a spectacular gift...and a disregard for the words as written, often making inferior "substitutions". And no comparison here to Streisand.....who sang this with a power and maturity that skyrocketed her career. Garland has some great moments here but Streisand builds the song like nothing I've ever heard.

Judy Garland has been known to forget lyrics and out of necessity make substitutions on the fly, but I think it's wrong to say she had "a disregard for the words as written." I think she's one of the few singers who revered the lyrics and the melodies as written and didn't set out to mess around with them. I doubt she enjoyed forgetting the words. And well... as far as "no comparison here to Streisand"...seems as if plenty of people are comparing them, and coming down on the side of Garland.
