Honestly I don't give two shits about the healthcare discussion cause:
1- I'm not American so it shouldn't concern me unless I plan on moving there,
2- Arguing about it is absolutely tiresome and those against public healthcare systems will absolutely not listen or take the defending arguments into consideration before presenting any possible refutations they might have.
3- I've been thrown more insults than I can imagine in these arguments cause of point 1. I've even been called a commie despite me thinking so lowly of them that a dog would look more deserving of rights (especially now with the Russia situation and communist parties around the world simping for the Kremlin).

    • @nicoletaungurean5230
      @nicoletaungurean5230 2 года назад

@max omalley You seem very confused about what universal healthcare is. It has nothing to do with multiculturalism. In my country, all citizens who are employed have to pay a tax, every month from their salaries, that goes specifically to a public healthcare fund. These funds are then used to provide care to people who need it. @max omalley Ok, then you are misusing the word culture here. Your opinion is based on political ideology not national or ethnic identity like you initially implied. There are clearly citizens in the US who would like universal healthcare and others that wouldn't. The divide is between the political left and the political right. It has nothing to do with the country being "a melting pot".
The way I see it the issue in the USA is the right's individualism and the whole "self-made man" and "picking yourself up by the bootstraps" mentality, which I'm sorry to say but reminds me a lot of the Wild West days. In other countries we encourage collaboration and helping each other out more. The town is big enough for all of us!

4:55 This is one of the most common misunderstandings about rights. The idea is that rights are fundamental rights you have as a human being regardless of country and be violated by individuals. If rights were purely country dependent then there would be no such thing as a country violating human rights. Originally the idea was that they are "god given" meaning it was going against god to violate them. Now like most secular moral systems we simply believe it would be morally wrong to deny them. To make this clear to you it is considered an infringement on someone's HUMAN rights to deny them something purely on the bases of their race. That's why it was called Civil Rights and applied to private businesses just as much as the government. It makes me, someone who a lot of religions do not like cause I like the same sex, almost wish we all feared god again just so people understood they aren't given by the constitution and the government. In criminology, I learnt about the two models of criminal justice: crime control, and due process. Crime control is guilty until proven innocent, and due process is innocent until proven guilty. In the textbook and in class, I was taught that due process is left realism and crime control is right realism, but I couldn't help but think to myself about how it seems like it has switched. The discussion around rights boils down to how you feel about negative vs positive rights. For a negative right, somebody else cannot infringe upon your right. However, they don't have to do anything to perpetuate it. With positive rights, somebody else must provide you with something. I personally largely disagree with the idea of positive rights because a right that can be passively violated due to a fundamental lack of something (i.e. not enough doctors exist to treat you) seems absurd to me. Just look to the quality of public defenders to see just how meaningless such a right can be. That's not to say that I disagree with trying to provide things like food, healthcare, or legal representation to everybody. I only disagree with terming them inalienable rights.

It's the Lockean conception of rights vs Mill's conception, or Classical Liberalism vs Social Liberalism.
Utilitarians think, for some reason, it's okay to name services or goods rights because they derive the privileges they want the government to confer from the rights originally outlined by Locke, in order to produce the greatest good.
I doubt I have to tell you that since you understand the distinction between positive and negative rights already, but that is where it stems from. People who follow Rousseau, Kant and Mill almost always buy into the idea of positive rights because they believe that humans are fundamentally good. Locke did not believe that and did not conceive of the idea of rights within that framework though. He sought to be as objective as possible regarding their description and didn't take the morals or ethics of human nature into account when describing them, merely the human capacity to exercise their will on the world as an actor.
Because Social liberals believe that maximizing good is the best practice, they seek to create rights that the government should enshrine to bring about that maximum good.
Classical liberals do not believe that the government is capable of maximizing the good of individuals, rather, they only believe that it should be used to mediate disputes between them as a sort of minimum acceptable authority and be given no or very little power further, as it is just as susceptible to corruption as any human is, and that instead individuals should wherever possible, maximize the good in their own lives.
I think it's fine to have a middle ground where the government offers services that take care of people who are in need, social safety nets as you will, in order to prevent outstanding poverty and to help ensure the lower class can still function and work towards their own improvement and happiness. I just think it's important to distinguish what a right is, and to do away with the notion of positive rights altogether, as that particular school of thought leads to nothing but suffering when reality time and again proves it to be incorrect.

About AI, there is a difference between creating (especially aesthetics) and identification. One of the big hurdles in computers taking our jobs today is the ability to identify objects without help. There's also the issue of how much time and expense it takes to create robots/AI for a specific task vs. how much labor you save with the robot. If you have a job that cane be made exactly the same in thousands of different workplaces this advantages automation, but a lot of jobs are menial enough to be boring to people but just niche enough to not be worth automating. In time robots will become more and more generalized, and eventually from there less expensive, but it's hard to say how futuristic that world is.

As such there are only 3 human rights at all. Those that a human would be able to exercise if he was alone on an island and there was no state. That would be the freedom of expression/speech, property and movement. Everything else will require the labor of somebody else and by definition can not be a right. Healthcare can not be a right because then you would be entitled to the time and labor of a doctor. You would be entitled to the time and labor of the person who made the pills or the band aid. And that's slavery.
You are entitled to exchange your time and labor for a mode of exchange, or currency as one might say and then you are entitled to exchange that amount of currency which is your property for a good or service which is nothing else than time and labor of somebody else.
And these things will depend on the state, as we need to make sure there is an authority that will enforce a contract that isn't just the humans who are involved in it. Well that does not depend entirely on the state as a mafia can take over that part but I'd prefer if we had a state do that.

2:44 I'm a hard progressive/leftist/demsoc, whatever you want to call me. A big issue for me with a lot of fellow leftists is that we live online a lot and understand what makes things problematic, but then view everything slightly problematic from an antagonizing lens. This really cuts into the outlook of a lot of American comedy in leftist circles. A lot of humor covers touchy subjects and problematic perspectives which immediately raises alarms in a lot of well-intentioned people. However a lot of these jokes are not necessarily made in poor taste; there are plenty of comedians who make great jokes on these issues in good taste, not necessarily punching down or enabling any sort of oppressive belief.
Knowing "in what taste" a joke was made is fairly subjective, but what isn't subjective is how many of these jokes are definitely not the problem, but still have too much attention diverted to them. It's very easy for the average internet leftist to comment or make a post about seemingly problematic content on RUclips or Twitter, but it's much more difficult for the same person to address legitimate social or structural issues that enable such beliefs, which is why so many people resort to the former.
I think it's really important, as any sort of leftist or progressive, to keep in mind the very real, structural aspects of society that enable oppression or discrimination and to focus your energy on those things, rather than giving in to the easy out of ranting about content that may or may not be problematic. Organize with people, either at your workplace or your neighborhood or your building or whatever, build a community, and show these fucking corporations what their priorities should really be.

Saying something is a right or not isn't just a pointless semantical argument, it's important. By calling something a right you are saying that there is an entitlement and obligation that has to be respected. It invalidates an individual person's own feelings about whether they want to be involved in that or not when normally they should be able to decide that for themselves. Chris also lists a ton of things as rights that aren't even rights so it's important for him to understand this sort of thing (education is not a right for example).
The point of a right is that it is something that you would have in isolation without society. When rights were created the political thinkers established these as things that should be protected as a respect to the individual. They are things an individual would have without interference from another. Things you are protected to have by society because otherwise you would be oppressed by the coexistence with others if you are not entitled to them within society when you otherwise would have them. Rights are intended to be a mechanism to ethically include the individual in a society by protecting them from issues created by coexistence with others.
This is why rights are things like not being DEPRIVED of something (like access to water) by other people and not things like being REQUIRED TO DO something for another person (like having to give them money). Note that you are not entitled to have water provided to you but that you can't be prevented by another person from accessing it when you otherwise would be able to. Saying that healthcare should be a right is the complete opposite of what a right is meant to be, you would be oppressing people by obligating them to do something for another person against their will when that person is not entitled to having you do anything for them.

Man I love your videos like this, I often find myself politically confused and videos where you help break down some things like this is helpful to find my own opinion and where I stand. Thank you for helping me rationalize my own opinions over the years and get out of the toxicity that is “gotcha” politics and start thinking for myself in that regard. I feel like I was such a smooth brain before I realized the way I viewed politics in general wasn’t remotely healthy.

Coming from a center-right fan's perspective, I never thought that because you were funny and not insane (a SJW) that you knew what you're talking about with regard to poiltics/policy. I don't think you do, and that's okay. I enjoyed your content then, for what it was, and I enjoy it now.
I'm glad that Colin started a show with you at the time that he did. It's excellent, and I'm happy for your success. It's nice to see the good guys winning.
The anti-SJW shit "died" because they won; anyone who has taken a look around in the last couple of years can see that. The average Joe leftist has backed out of those discussions out of fear. Hell, they're still clearly trying to smack you around for not being completely in the cult. It's too bad.

An attorney being provided to you by the state for free is a privilege. You are legally allowed to be your own attorney.

I dunno, the right to counsel seems like a right instead of a privilege and it seems pretty clear that the 6th includes the right to *appointed* counsel *and* the right to represent oneself.

My dude, that you waive your right to an attourney and repersent yourself does not make the right to an attourny any less of a right.
You have a right to free speach, does not mean you have to.
You have a right to bear arms, does not mean you have to.
