  • How to Sing better right now!
HI guys! I’m Madeleine Harvey, and thank you for joining me today! We have a super exciting video planned! We’re going to be talking about how you can sing better right now! This video is intended to empower you to take command of your voice, and start singing better immediately! So if you’re finding that you’re getting frustrated with your voice, you can use the tips in this video as a checklist to keep you focused, moving forward, and of course improving. So if you like today’s video, be sure to give it a thumbs up and click the subscribe button below. I would love to see you here more often!
    1. We’re going to start with the big one! And that’s creating space! Most of the tips that we’ll talk about today filter back into this one fundamental idea. And I feel that this is where you’re going to see most of your improvement. One of the very first things that you’ll want to do before you start singing is stretch your face. Singing is all about guiding your vibrations into tiny spaces inside of your face. It’s called resonance. You’re ability to do this will effect your tone quality, your power and your pitch. So bring as much aliveness into your face as you can stand! Make your eyes really big, flare your nostrils and feel the coolness of the air circulating into your nose space. Just get to know that feeling of openness. Then send a couple of sighs into your face and notice how you can feel the vibrations landing into the areas that you’re focusing on.
    2. Pitch matching. If you feel that you may struggle sometimes with matching pitch in your singing that simply speaks to a lack of muscle memory that’s all. The ear bone is connected to the voice bone and that’s connected to the space bone. So get to know pitch and intervals by playing with small variations in sound. Humming works wonders because it moves the sound forward into your mask and allows you to register that resonance as well as the movement in the pitch. Bring that aliveness that we talked about our number 1 tip into it as well. That will allow for you to deliberately focus on the energy that’s needed to stay on pitch.
    3. Articulation. Something a lot of singers do when they’re just getting started is mumble when they sing. Not only do we not understand what they are saying, but mumbling also creates a collapsed feeling in the face and there goes the neighborhood. Can you sense a pattern? How everything really relies on the need for space? Well done! So use articulation by over emphasizing your words. Notice how the articulation keeps the tone focused forward as well as your thoughts clear and projected. This is going to feel really weird. But signing is larger than life! So get used to it! Really, develop a sense of comfort with bigness.
    4. Experimentation. Don’t be scared to look silly. Or play with a sound or a shape that may feel like it doesn’t sound like you. At the end of the day, it’s all about access to spaces. When you are exploring the space in your face where the sound needs to take place, you may need a little assistance from a crazy sound to get you there. I demonstrate crazy sounds all the time in lessons, and I will get a lot of resistance from singers who are just starting out because they don’t want to sound bad, or annoying. If you have a need for a specific tone quality, and refuse to play with sounds that are going to help you have access to bigger parts of your voice because those sounds take you away from that quality, you’re never going to have access to your potential. Of course you can have a vision for what areas of your voice you want to polish and use the most, but don’t be afraid to get really comfortable with the absurd and the unknown. All in the name of exploration. So adopt a playful frame of mind and see what new qualities you can discover. Feel those new sensations and get comfortable with the absurd that’s how progress is made.
    5. Make good choices. When it comes time to perform, begin in your comfort zone. It’s so much better to build comfort and confidence with performing by choosing a simple song and doing it well, rather than sabotaging yourself with a song that you may need some time to develop. So choose a song that feels extremely natural and conversational to you. You want to wake up your voice with small progressions. Another benefit to choosing a relatively easier song when performing is you can anchor the feeling of comfort and simply enjoy the process of performing. And flex your performing muscles by focusing on communicating the lyrics and effectively expressing your point of view through the story.

Hi! I'm 14 and I've always kinda been known (or not noticed) as being the "quiet girl" but I've always loved to sing. And I just want to say you give me so much confidence and help me more than I could ever ask. I can already see improvement and I've been thinking about starting a RUclips channel! Thank you so so much for all the help! Xx❤

PiTCH iS VERY deliberate. It does take focus. I used to aimlessly sing bc i didn't really know.
But once you know how to match pitch or that you have to. And engrain it into your muscle memory.. it becomes a lotttt better

I've been singing for years. I've always felt I was good, but quiet and shy. I want to be better, and you've helped bring some new information into how I perform. Eventually I want to perform for a crowd. I was never in choir....I was the band geek. I feel like I've grown on my own, belting out in the truck while I'm driving, increasing my range...but these videos are amazing. You're an amazing instructor.

Let me tell you, when I was eight I swore that I would be a performer! But my voice was so tiny and breathy. My family didn't believe I would ever be a good singer. Now, I'm 14, and I've been the lead in a musical, and my voice is loud and strong! So, remember that the more you sing, the better you'll get! Your voice is a muscle. You can't run a mile in a few minutes the first time you ever run, can you? Also, remember that your voice won't be fully developed until your in your 20s!

Hi there in 12 and last year I stopped sing due to someone saying that I was a disappointment, a failure & that I was selfish all because I quit my school choir. This really put me off and I don't know if I should start singing again I'm quite a shy person 😔 please someone help

I"m so sorry that some small person needed to make themselves feel taller by saying those things to you. I wish I could tell you that in your journey to sing and speak your truth, that people will always be kind. They won't. But please don't let that quiet your voice. Instead, use every opportunity to jump beyond your fears. You can't control what other people think, how they see you, or what they say about you. But you can choose to be the best you that you can for yourself. I believe in you!!!

i’m in a play and i had a one line solo. but a few of the other carolers would try to sing it with me, and then the rest would tell them to stop, which threw me off, and made me quiet at the same time as them fighting and then they took away my solo and had everyone sing it. then when i got home my parents asked me if i could sing something for them and i’m like HECK NO and they’re like “well if you don’t have any confidence then why are you trying out for a solo for show choir on monday?” and i’m determined to be louder at singing before monday even though i’m more scared then scared and i don’t want to do it BUT IM GOING TO

I've always loved to sing but have been very critised (by family and friends), and lately I've been singing more and more and I feel I'm improving just by practising. When I do these exercises and I get the following sensations: my nostrils and chest gets full of air, my soft palate lifts, my throat vibrates, my gums tingle, my teeth rattle, my right ear wiggles, my left eye twitches, my tongue stings, the right side of my mouth starts to droop and drool starts to slowly trickle out, my left side goes numb, I get light headed, my mind goes blank, I loose balance and experience cataplexy for about 10 seconds. Am I doing it right?

Hi Madeleine. I perfectly found my song choice and practiced it every day. Especially at night with my guitar. I observed that I enjoyed it, focusing on my diction how I sing it, my breathing and everything. However, there's still some notes that I struggled with especially with I guess they call it head voice. Sometimes I feel I got it but most I don't. And now practicing for 3 days I can feel a bit of strain in my throat. Not so much but a bit and I can feel that I can still do practice but I worried so I stopped.
Is it normal to feel a bit strain in my throat? Should I continue practicing or have to rest until the strain go away? TIA ☺

Help! I have post nasal drip and I often have stuffy nose (and I can't blow it out or get rid of it) what can I do? It kinda takes away my resonance and it's a little hard to sing when it's acting up

my teacher at school says that i have a "nasal" voice. but i tried to watch a few videos and realised that what i had in my voice was "nasal resonance"
so when i sing, the portion around my nose vibrates. i have gotten so used to it that i cannot sing without it. how do i sing in a voice without nasal resonance? do i need to?
also my voice sounds veryyy different when i sing , as compared to my speaking voice. everyone points that out and says that i sing in a "made up voice"
so is it more advisable to sing in my speaking voice?

It hasn't much to do with singing, but your voice has some ASMR potential. Did you know? In any case, thanks for your video! :-)

    Hi ! ;)
So, the place where I take singing lessons at, have this "come and look" thing in two days, and I'll have to sing a duet that is NOT in my comfort zone. My teacher said that it was just to show people what a lesson could be like, but I've been very insecure about singing in front of people in the past, and I'm scared that this experience may give me some problems with performing in front of people.. It's very high for me, and it's just in that "area", where I can't get my voice to blend.
So all in all; I don't feel my voice is ready, and I'm scared that I'll get tensed, and sing in an unhealthily way.
Please respond, I really need some tips ;)

hii☺ when I sing, my throat hurts after I sing like 3 songs. what can I do to stop it?

    • @MadeleineHarveyVoice

+Ilayda Schmidt OH NO! Well, pain is not a good thing. So if you notice that there is pain after about 3 songs, you'll need to tune into yourself to see what the aggravating incident really is... Usually pain and inflammation are caused when there is compensation happening...usually strain and tension. But that is not always the case. Sometimes, pain can be caused by too much air pressure...(Singing really loudly without support or interior muscle strength.) It's like me going to the gym and attempting to bench press my own weight the first time around....(I'm likely to pull something or hurt myself.) What you can do, is try singing a little softer and see how you feel. You want your singing to feel fluid and even, like a melodic version of your natural speech. Stay relaxed, and feel the flow. I hope this helps!! BIG HUGS!
