  • 3 ways to strengthen the head voice
    Hello, my musical friends! I’m Madeleine Harvey and thank you so much for checking out this video. Today, we’re going to be talking about 3 ways that you can strengthen your head voice and sing high with power! It’s my hope that by the end of today’s video, you’ll have a better understanding of and greater access to this huge part of your voice! If you like this video, please give it a thumbs up and click the subscribe button below…I’d love to see you here all the time!
    The head voice, as a register is really tricky for a lot of singers. Mainly because it exists outside of that grounded feeling that we are so accustomed to with our speech. Chest voice is much easier because it’s right in that speaking zone. Oftentimes, we feel that can’t control head voice, or hold onto it. A lot of singers have nightmares about head voice because it tends to showcase those inconsistencies in their sound. Such as wobbling, breaking and breathiness. Because of this, certain compensations are developed such as tension, gripping, spreading or even just ignoring the head voice altogether.
    But here are 3 ways that you can strengthen the head voice and sing high with power.
    1. Awaken the space in your face
    The head voice resonates within the nasal cavity. And in order to maximize the vibrations from head voice, we have to know how to awaken that part of our resonating system, so that the flow can feed into that space effortlessly. Oftentimes, this is where people struggle. If you find that your head voice is unstable, it’s partly because the resonance isn’t as focused. It could be falling backwards into more of a classical sound. Or the resonance may not be open at all resulting in the lifting of your larynx or a labored sound. So you’ll need to feel that sensation of your face stretching on the inside and keep that space as active in your experience as you can until it becomes a new habit. Really aim your sound into your face.
    • Hmmm - Lift like you ate something good. - This focuses the tone forward.
    2. Lift the soft pallet
    A great way to bring more focus and clarity into your head voice is to lift the soft pallet. A great way to feel this is to act as if you are holding back a laugh. Feel the space right behind your top back teeth open and lift. This will really help with keeping you tone clear and present. Just like awakening the space in the face, you’ll have to concentrate on keeping this sensation as active in your experience as you can until it becomes a new habit.
    (Demonstrate the difference in neutral vs lifted. Huh taps.)
    3. Close the cords
    Another excellent way to strengthen your head voice is through cord closure. This will add crispness and vitality to your head voice. A good way to initiate cord closure is to grunt slightly almost like a monkey. Feel how slightly you can bring your cords together. As you play with this sound, you may be tempted to overcompensate with tons of weight, but I encourage you to surrender that weight for balance as you work to develop this clean feeling. You can always go back, and add a little more substance once you have become comfortable.

    I love the way you explain everything. You're the only voice teacher who tackles the psychological parts of singing as well as the technical to form a whole image. I cannot stress how much your advice helps me, but you seem to understand how it feels to be insecure with one's own image/voice on a subconscious level. That takes your advice to a whole new level, and I feel like I can benefit from this a lot. Thanks!

      Thank you so much Mike! This was just so spot on! Yes, I feel that in order to be an artist, we have to understand the entire human experience. Singing for me, isn't about projecting perfection, but embracing all those fears and jumping beyond myself. That whole concept is the reason why voice continues to inspire me. I'm so happy to hear that you are concentrating on this growth within yourself! Thank you so much for sharing this! Totally made my day!

    • @mikemuller2192
      @mikemuller2192 8 лет назад +44

      About a year ago, I noticed that my voice wasn't really "me". I was singing well, but people who know how to listen really well and can critique voices would tell me I wasn't expressing myself fully. I never really understood how, because I thought I was singing with feeling and it sounded technically good to me. Then one time, I was thinking about how my voice feels trapped so I googled and found your video "Why does your singing voice feel trapped or stuck?". Everything just clicked at once, and I realized how I wasn't really expressing me. I was so insecure about criticism that I just started copying how others sing without making it my own. I took a while to get used to this new feeling of singing through myself, and I know I can do it effortlessly.
      That's so awesome that it made you feel better about what you do, because you need to know you practically gave someone a voice. As someone who sings, you should know that that's a very precious gift. So thanks again!

My falsetto skill is way too good in making a full sound as well, but I have NEVER been able to connect it to my chest voice. Something always felt off. Can you help me?
    whenever I put on my headphones I can sing beautifully and with confident but when I go to karaoke or put on instrumental I lost my confidence.Help please!

    • @MadeleineHarveyVoice
      @MadeleineHarveyVoice  8 лет назад +149

      There can be a type of tone shock that happens when you are accustomed to hearing yourself through headphones versus amplified through a loud speaker at karaoke. As hard as it is to do, try to record yourself as often as you can. Watch it, or listen to playback and begin to get comfortable with the sound of your own voice. This will really help train your ear to any adjustments that need to be made on the fly. Choose songs that you feel really comfortable with and you know that you can perform them well. This will help anchor a positive experience to performance. When you get comfortable with the song that you're singing, you're totally in control and are free to tell the story. I did make a video about how to fix a nervous voice if you need extra help! ruclips.net/video/hwFISkK-Cug/видео.html Break a leg!!

    • @loki884
      @loki884 5 лет назад +27

      Never sing with headphones 😂 it’s the worst cuz with headphones on you can’t really hear your voice, the song you’re listening to the singers voice overshadows your voice which make you think you’re singing the right tone and singing flawless, you’re not singing differently at karaoke, you’re singing just the same but it’s what you hear, at karaoke with instrumental only you can hear your voice well

  • @wendygoerl9162
    @wendygoerl9162 5 лет назад +1

    I was always too busy being an instrumentalist (band, jazz band, and orchestra--different instruments in each) to bother developing my voice in school, so while I can hit my pitches more often than not, I don't even know how to talk about what I do and don't like about my voice. But a lot of people think I can "sing good," so I've been playing with my new mic (which I bought with the intention of narrating audiobooks, of course) and some karaoke downloads. With everyone emphasizing breath and diaphragm breathing, I guess I was trying to sing in chest voice and ended up bobbling back and forth between chest and head voice. After going through this video (and the "How to sing really high" video, which didn't seem to work for me) and actually being conscious of and staying in head voice, my recordings sounded a lot better. Guess it helps to hum a lot and make up societies where people scream through their noses.

    March 10, 2017: Last night I sang Billy Joel's; Leave a Tender Moment Alone at karaoke for the first time. [away over my head] On a good day I can reach an F. This song requires A# quite often. He was 25 at the time. I am 76. The A# was so so so weak and dull as compared to the rest of the song. You duplicated the same disappearing sound balance on this video. That got my attention. THAT IS WHY I AM HERE TODAY. Projecting forward is the goal now so the song, eventually, has no silent notes.

      Head voice causes your sinus cavities to resonate. Itchy eyes, ears and noses are a common side effect.

    I actually keep my mouth shut and though i sound like im talking its just noises i make sound like words, it does the same thing as this plus it helps if youve got a sore tooth, but not many understand the "words" 😂😂

    This was so helpful! I always hear people say "Raise your soft palate" but no one seems to explain how to do that. Now you have and I understand how to activate my head voice a lot better. It is otherwise something I've been avoiding just like you said

    I’m not a good singer at all I mostly sing along and try to copy techniques of some of my favorite songs and I recently started to try to improve my own voice and I realized after watching a few videos I’m more comfortable in the “head” voice and mostly sing in my head voice and I’m barely starting to learn to sing with a chest voice which is hard for me to control also lower notes are hard for me too so it’s kind of confusing for me lol

    Hello Madeleine, i've just subscribed. Thanks for your precious lesson, one "stage artist remark": all sound and visual chosen (were they?) elements (intro, colours, dress, background, yout tone voice) really help, they were perfectly set in order make this class really efficient. One more time, thank you
