    Talisker 10 was the scotch that made me love scotch. Really thorough review and matches my tasting notes pretty spot on. The only thing about comparing this to HP 12 is the heavy sherry and the lighter peat on the HP. I'd compare it to Laphroaig or Ardbeg. Cheers, Bill 🥃

    This is a beauty, and one I always have in my cabinet. I think the iodine/bandaid thing is pretty subtle in Talisker compared to, say, Call Ila where it dominates. But you've caught the vibe of this perfectly. Campfire embers on a beach in a fresh breeze. To introduce someone gently to peated scotch my go-to is HP12. Try Talisker when you're ready to take the training wheels off.

    Great review- It's a lovely bridge across the fruity floraly world into peatville - oats, orange, lemon, honeycomb, iodine, smokey, oily, salty flapjack.

    Maybe compare Talisker 10 with Lagavulin 16?

    Great comparison is Kilkerran 12 or Springbank 10, as they are similar peat levels & share a lot of notes. Plus all 3 (Talisker 10 included), carry a very specific note, that is often referred to as “funk”. Talisker 18, which I had last night, has more of a fresh oyster note on the palate, at least that’s how it comes across to me, where as the 10 is almost like standing on a rocky sea shore & tasting the sea spray coming from the waves crashing on the rocks.

    Always a pleasure to watch your videos. Talisker and Oban where my introduction to premium whiskies. It would be fun to see them going head to head against Ardberg and Laphroaig. In similar price range, you can add Ledaig, BenRiach Curiousitas, Port Askaig 8, Kilchoman, The Classic Ladie. Old Pulteney is smoky/maritime but due to 40% ABV i think it will fall short on the others.
    On and Port Charlotte 10 (which most probably will annihilate them all..).

    Nice video as always. In terms of comparisons, I think you're right in thinking Highland Park 12 as a good comparison whisky. Oban would also be a good call with its pronounced coastal notes.
    I definitely wouldn't go for Bunnahabhain 12, the bunna is a much richer, sherried affair. Think marzipan and dried fruits. In terms of one you haven't said, I'd be tempted by a Glen Scotia from Campbeltown, which will have some of those same salty and warming spice notes. The 15 is a top choice there.

    I just had a glass for the first time at a restaurant, and I don't think its nearly as salty/oceany, but it came across to me was as having very balanced, but present peat flavor that could also be a good peat-intro dram for a newbie. Plus its an Islay Whiskey as well.

    Really great review of the Talisker 10! Totally agree this is one of those bottles that every scotch drinker should in their whisky cabinet. Also enjoyed the fact that you mentioned the worm tubs. No one ever talks about those!
    Would love to see Ledaig 10 added to the mix for a side by side comparison with Talisker 10. They're both peated island scotches, have a similar ABV but the Ledaig is a bit more peated as well as being non-chill filtered.
    If I could offer a substitution I'd replace the HP 12 with the HP 10 just because it has a more pronounced peated profile than the 12, though it's still on the lighter end of the spectrum.

    I've been drinking scotch for a while. I don't shy away from the more aggressive flavors, there are 3 different Laphroigs and 2 Ardbegs in the cabinet right now....... But I recently bought my first bottle of Talisker 10. It's undrinkably bad. Tastes like bad medicine and smells like bandaides. I know the reputation of Talisker and can't belive this is a good representation. Another whisky friend who regularly drinks Talisker tasted it and said it wasn't right. Of all the Talisker expessions, even those of greater age, the 10 is the one by which they are all judged. It presents all the Talisker DNA and it's the best value top whisky out there in the U.K. I can get it for £30 a bottle and it's a whisky that gets a 90/100 from Serge Valentin. I love the coastal sea spray and rock pool signature. The 18 is great as well but the 10 is the base. Usual dilemma because you can buy two of these for the same price as the 18. It's a classic go to whisky. Talisker 10 vs Ardbeg 10 is a big beast fight but Talisker 10 slays everything for value.

    I think Talisker 10 is unique in the way it balances peat, brine and citrus. Highland park would be sweeter and laphroaig would be punchier. My vote would be to compare Talisker 10 to Bowmore 12.

    • @groberti
      @groberti 2 года назад

      Not a fair comparison for Bowmore 12. Ledaig 10 could be interesting

  • @cnkirch1215

    Interesting... my palate must not be particularly refined. I really enjoy Talisker but don’t find it nearly as peat-forward as you. I get a *lot* of fruit notes, specifically apples. Actually I’d say it’s more like an apple juice... comes through strong for me

    • @cnkirch1215
      @cnkirch1215 3 года назад

      @@TheWhiskeyDictionary it’s definitely there but not in the same ballpark as some of the Islays (to me). Course the main peated whisky in my rotation are Ardbeg and Lagavulin so perhaps everything else just seems pretty tame in comparison

  • @carlossandiego7925
    @carlossandiego7925 3 года назад

    I think comparing Talisker with Ardbeg or Laphraoig would be too drastic a comparison. Highland Park 12 seems like a more level playing field in terms of intensity. Bunna 12 would be interesting because it’s such a different expression of seaside whiskey compared to Talisker.

    band-aids, iodine, smoke, that does not sound like something you should ingest...but i do plan to try this one sometime. The only Scotch I've had is Glenmorangie 14 and Monkey Shoulder. Both good, but obviously nothing like this one.

      I would suggest Laphroaigh 10 if you want a similar taste note like Talisker 10.

      @@darrencheong138 Oh yeah, I know they're very different. I just couldn't get excited by descriptions like the one that was with this video. On vacation this Summer, I had the chance to try Laphroaig 10. Now my shelf includes a Talisker 10, Laphroaig Select, Compass Box Peat Monster and a Laguvalin 8. So even though the descriptions don't sound appetizing to me, I do love the actual taste!

    Talisker 10 vs Highland Park 12 vs Longrow

  • @stuffforwork
    @stuffforwork 3 года назад

    Talisker 10 and HP12 is a fine comparison, though the lower ABV and sherry on HP stand out. Because of the peat level and the richness from the worm tub, I think that the campbeltown whiskys are a good comparison (Glen Scotia 15 in particular lines up well with Talisker). Craigellachie 13 does have a very similar flavor profile but is unpeated (or nearly so) so the only smoke that comes through I identify as barrel char. I don't personally think the Talisker to Islay whisky comparison is very interesting as the peat profiles (and spirit profiles) are very different but your viewers might enjoy it, and for people new to peat, it will be enlightening to hear how very different they are.
